[Q] 'SOLVED' Problem with updating Apps - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there!
I am having problems with updating applications on my phone. I have a Sony Xperia S running on a custom ROM. Details of my phone are below. I can download or install an application from the market or from my internal storage, but afterwards I can not update. It only works sometimes on the market, but it never works when trying to update from my internal storage. I keep getting an "App not installed" error. I have 'Unknown source' checked. My phone is rooted with latest binary. I have the latest BusyBox. I have space in System, Data, Cache and Internal. I have tried multiple methods, such as Xposed' "Xinstaller" app, clearing cache and even data. I have also tried swapping android installation location just in case, because, well, you never know! I tried updating an app through multiple apps. But I had no luck there.
The thing is, I had this ROM before, and never had such problems. The ROM hasn't been updated since I last had it, so I know I am running on the same version. According to the developer, it's a stable ROM. I decided to move to Lollipop, only to find some incompatibility issues with a few apps, and eventually loosing my internal storage. So I had to reflash and all to get it even working. I have a backup of the ROM I ran with before going to 5.1.1, but that has some sort of boot problems, which I have caused. So I am sure its not the ROM itself.
I have not tried to replace an app file in my phones system-data folder manually, so I don't know if it works like that. I would like a more permanent solution, if possible. I don't want to uninstall and reinstall just to update. I would like to keep my data and not go through so much trouble. > Even if I had to I couldn't, because it wont let me. I have tried to uninstall an app and reinstall it with a newer version, but it simply won't let me, through my internal storage that is. Play has a mind of its own. Sometimes it would let me, sometimes it won't. Sometimes its just a specific app.
I have never met with such an issue ever. It's mind-blowing!
I have also tried searching this problem, but about 99% are about updating errors through Play. I have not contacted the ROM developer about this, as I think this problem is more universal.
Specs:
Manufacturer: Sony
Model: Xperia S
Android version: 4.4.4
ROM: Carbon-KK Unofficial (2014-11-03 1244)
Kernel: 3.4.0-Evolve-v1.25+ [email protected] #1
CPU: ARMv7 Processor rev 4 (v7l)
Memory: 732 MB
Build Number: carbon_nozomi-userdebug 4.4.4 KTU84Q e6e5d96b44 test-keys
SELinux Status: Enforcing
I would appreciate anyone's help and suggestions!
#Edit:
After experimenting, I came to a conclusion.
I CANNOT give you an exact solution to this problem I've been having. It could be due to a faulty Xposed install or some sort. Maybe because I wasn't on the latest Xposed version. Or maybe because of Xposed' "XInstaller".
Try experimenting with basically what you have. Maybe I was lucky because I just had to remove an app. But you might not be. You could try to re-flash your ROM just in case it might be a system error, although that may be unlikely. Try removing or disabling (freezing) your app(s) that may cause you to have a signature error or any other app that may conflict an app install IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE. (Signature check, forward-locking, backward install, etc. (Just like XInstaller from Xposed))Hopefully many who might have came across this error will be able to get out of it with the above-mentioned.

You could try removing xposed. Many apps are now checking for it and if found it won't install. Also it could be that the apps that you download have different signatures then the official and in that case it will not install on top of it. Also apps installed are installed in the data/app partition. Never in system. It could also be a rom issue. Carbon has been known to have issues mainly with their gapps

Hmm I had Xposed before when I still had this ROM. Everything went fine! But I will give that a shot later.
I have also tried reinstalling the exact same apps I had before since I kept the apps. I know I don't have some signature issue. Checked them all out. But if I even uninstall a given app, I won't be able to reinstall it, whether its the exact same version or an updated version. I have not tried a previous older version though. But still, I'll give a shot at removing Xposed and see what will happen.
I never had an issue with Carbons Gapps. Hell, it even fixed my "Insufficient space error" Play usually gives to a lot of users. So I am a bit dumbfounded at this point.
Should give my results tomorrow.
What I meant by system-data is by moving an app to either ROOT>Data>App folder or ROOT>System>App folder.
That way I can either have an app installed as a User app or as a System app.
I swear, this whole thing is so bizarre!

See if it happens on other roms as well

Alright, I temporarily removed Xposed, and everything went fine. I updated the Xposed to 2.7.1 Experimental. Everything went fine until I updated 2 apps. Got the "App Not Installed" error again. After that I removed "XInstaller" and now everything is going fine as we speak.
I don't understand though. I had been suffering with that error BEFORE I got "XInstaller", but now I removed it, everything is going fine. I don't know if it's because I was running on Xposed 2.6, which is theoretically stable, and not on 2.7.1 Experimental, which is deemed as an experiment, or because of some other god-knows-what reason. I can now also update any app through Play as well, including the ones that I was never able to update before.
So, sit-rep:
I CANNOT give you an exact solution to this problem I've been having. It could be due to a faulty Xposed install or some sort. maybe because I wasn't on the latest Xposed version. Or maybe because of Xposed' "XInstaller". Even though those all worked for me in the past and had this trouble after re-flashing Carbon ROM before any of the just mentioned, but never mind that..
I have not tried with another ROM, because quite frankly, I simply don't have the time to experiment. Especially hair. I lost a lot during the few weeks from all this mess with my phone.
Thank you zelendel for taking your time with helping me out.
Hopefully this error wont come back again.

[Q] Market issue

I need a bit of help,
for some reason my market app won't allow me to update Kies Air(plus other apps like ROM Toolbox).
When I search for the app, and the list of apps appear it says update, I click into the app, and it comes up with "Your device isn't compatible with this item", I know it's not the LCD density thing, as i've changed that and it still came up with the error. I've cleared the market cache and data.
I'm using:
Version - 2.3.5
Baseband - I9100XXK14
Kernel - 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #K2-21
Build number - GINGERBREAD.XWKJ1
The apps appear in the market correctly, i.e. SkySports News(which is a UK only based app) is appearing there, so I don't think it's anything to do with the regional settings of the build i'm using.
Can anyone help? Confusing the life out of me.
I've used Market Enabler, to no avail...changed it from O2 UK to USA(AT&T) and also tried the sprint network.
Is it something to do with my baseband? I don't mind attempting to flash another baseband on there, just need to know which one, how, and if it can be done through CWM? I can do it on odin, just will have to do it tomorrow on my own laptop at work.
just use another app kies is crap?!?! uninstall reinstall not work?
It's not just Kies though, ROM Toolbox is doing the same thing, and I am pretty sure I will get the same issue with other apps that I come across in the future.
Simply saying use another app, isn't exactly practical.
So only those two apps won't update ?? but others will?
Simply saying use another app, isn't exactly practical. - it is if other apps do the same job better?!
Clear data + cache for market apps... if that doesn't work just wait... sometimes apps won't update for a day or two and then will start working
Quite a few apps won't update, or even allow me to install them.
I just searched for the Kindle app on the market, I still get "Your device isn't compatible with this item".
I've cleared the data and cache, still doesn't work...
I am guessing more apps will display this issue as I search/want them...
So I may have fixed this, the density of my device was 235dpi and I read somewhere that the default density is 240dpi
So I've gone in and changed it with an app, and the market works now. I'll let you know if I have any more problems.
The only thing I can think of that changed this, is I installed Siyah kernel a few days ago, to try it, went back to speedmod as I prefered the original CWM rather than the tweaked version that Siyah gives out.
Anyway, it's working for now...
good luck

[Q] Restoring droid to stock

I couldn't leave well enough alone. I am in Europe, using a Verizon Motorola Droid, which was working (although at each boot would say 'unknown SIM - press ok, then it worked). I rooted the phone, installed Titanium, backed everything up and then started playing. I froze a load of bloatware - everything fine. I then downloaded Greenify and hibernated apps I didn't use. It was great. I should have stopped. I didn't. I downloaded Xposed framework, and then the Gravitybox module. Whoops. My phone took on a life of its own. First, my 'phone' (dialler) and 'people' (contacts) icons said 'app isn't installed' when they were clicked. I restored my Titanium backup. No change. I unfroze all the Titantium apps. No changed. I then rebooted, and the phone and contacts icons completely disappeared, as well as my wallpapers and ringtone, to something that my phone couldn't identify. I uninstalled Gravitybox and rebooted. Now the phone no longer connects to the cell phone signal either. I'm sunk, and really need some idea of what to do. Please.......Is there any way of just getting this phone back to some kind of workable order?
Try re-flashing the gapps for your android version. I think Android 4.2.2. And always remember: Make backups. Systembackups with Safestrap for example.

Thanks. I'm on 4.1.2. I have been trying to find instructions and/or a link regarding just reflashing the whole phone to the stock version, but can't find any. Would you know of one? I am a total noob (as evidenced by my thread) - so I am wondering - if I downloaded one of the other systems, like Liquid Smooth or whatever, does that also flash the phone where all the system files are new, or does it build upon the kernel which I appear to have screwed up??
Google should find a flashable Gapps.zip file. If nothing works, look into the firmwares super thread for stock roms or install cyanogenmod.
My mystery is somewhat solved - the upshot being don't leave a rooted phone around a young fella who is just starting to play with computers, as my son has been 'uninstalling' various files on my phone - the effect of which, of course, didn't come into effect until I rebooted, having downloaded Gravity Box. I have been able to find and restore 'People' and 'Phone' through my Titanium back-up. However, my phone is still not seeing my sim - another file that has been uninstalled, I imagine. I would hope that perhaps someone knows the name of the file that allows the phone to see the sim, rather than me having to uninstall all the files. My son says he only uninstalled about 5 files, but does not remember the names. Not a developer in the making!
I also have the problem with the recovery menu, where I cannot boot into it. Would an uninstalled file cause this? I downloaded Clockworkmod recovery, only to be then told that it does not support the Motorola Razr 'Spyder'. Are there any other options? And is the XT912 considered the 'Razr Spyder or is it one of the Droid options?? Thanks for any help you can give.

[Q] Weird Problem with the Phone

Hi,
[Sorry for the long post, but please, bear with me. This issue needs a lot of explaining...]
It's been a few weeks since I have been experiencing this weird problem with my phone. It started when one day I picked up my phone and saw that process.android.gapps had stopped. So I did what everyone does and cleared the cache, wiped the data, but still nothing happened. I went over and cleared it for play services too and that reset my google account (no idea why) and everything came back to normal. Or as I thought it did. A few days later, I again had the same problem in front of me, except that it was not just gapps this time, it was a ****load of a few more apps, including process.???.acore, all giving ANRs. Plus my google account got erased somehow so play store won't login and all other unnecessary stuff.
So I got frustrated and went over to the recovery and tried to factory reset. And this is where I realized something. IT DIDN'T HELP! The phone started as normal and I saw the startup screen. But as soon as I started entering my details, all the ANRs came back simultaneously.
So I did a lot of other stuff to rectify this, all in vain. Skip to 8 hours later. This is where I realized, some of the apps in /data/data had got corrupted and hence nothing was happening. Also, formatting /data resulted in an error, which I HAVE NO IDEA WHY TILL DATE.
So I did a workaround and renamed /data to something so that the android OS could create a new /data, which IT DID on the next reboot! And all was working fine again.
FOR A FEW HOURS.
Again the same ANR, same everything, no access to /data to format it etc etc.
Again renamed and rebooted and reinstalled Blisspop and gapps and everything.
And this has been the scene ever since.
What aggravates the situation?
A REBOOT
Whenever I reboot my phone, be it soft or hard, It corrupts some or the other app in /data. If I'm lucky it's a non essential app. If not, xx.xx.xx has crashed and the phone is unusable. I usually use ES and try to rename for the non essential apps (as deletion isn't possible), but for the essential ones, a reflash with whole /data/data renaming has to be done.
So basically this is the problem. I have no idea why my /data/data corrupts randomly, or whenever I restart. Could it be because I greenify apps? I stopped using deep hiberation but still this occurs. Or could it be a failing internal memory?
Please Help! I am just frustrated. Might go over to G3 soon if this doesn't work out.

I think it would be painfull to pinpoint what is screwed on your phone. If i were you,i would flash stock firmware and start from the beggining.

Yeah I guess that's what I'll do finally.
Although I'm still gonna try for a few more days to find something out If I can.
I'll post an update here if I do, in-case someone runs into the same problem as me and needs to find a solution later on.
UPDATE 1 - Okay so I reflashed everything to start over (everything same as before, no downgrading) and I think I may have found a solution. So rebooting the system corrupts /data right? Well, I tried powering off and starting instead of rebooting and that seems to work pretty well. No ANRs even after doing this more than 20 times. [NO IDEA WHY, but hey, it works, so good enough]
Although, I had greenify disabled.
Now, I'll try with it enabled and post an update soon.

Malware filled phone?

Hey guys, how are y'all doing?
Here's a little background on my problem:
A year ago bought a cheap-ass smartphone for my mom, from a big supermarket chain in my country that was selling french phones cheaply, it was only 60€ and my mom needed a phone, so there it is!
Anyway cut to the present, the phone is riddled of what I suspect is malware that installs itself as soon as I remove it such as Free Games, com.google.toolkit, MiniChrome, N62Androidpt, System Component, adservice, and a couple others.
It also keeps switching wi-fi off, and turning on that option that allows apps to be installed from unknown sources, and worst of all it keeps opening the phone in built browser with adds, and even porn sites on occasion, which is really not desirable as my very young aged nieces love stealing the phone and try to use it.
I installed malwarebytes, also did a factory reset to no avail it fixed nothing.
So I decided to flash a stock rom to see if I could get rid of it, searched around and found a repository of stock roms or firmwares or whatever it's called (I'm not too familiar with this side of smartphones), which I'd love to post, but apparently can't because I've last than 10 posts: doc-doapi.com/EM/selecline/smartphone/
It has a lot of roms for different models of my brand.
Used the UpgradeDownload - R2.9.2015 tool that was in that folder and flashed it successfully.
After I turned on the device it opened the new phone setup process, logged in to my google account, and restores my stuff like contacts, and a few trusted google apps from before the flash, but it soon started again to install those malware apps I stated up there on it's own, and it was soon in the same state as before...
Anyway here's some info about my phone that probably should've gone to the top.
It's a Selecline phone
Model S4S5in3g
Android version: 5.1
Kernel version: 3.10.65
Compilation number: S3S5in3g.V1.2_20160307
At the back it has a sticker and another model number 870712 which I used to find the folder on that repository of stock roms.
And that's all in a big nutshell, anyone has any tips?
Thanks.
lil' bump
Do you have login credentials for this Auchan website where you found the ROMs? It is asking for a login ID and password. I need ROM for Model S6S5IN3G.
Quick tip for getting rid of Malware even before they start. Go to Settings and check Data Usage. See which apps are using lots of data (downloading junk into your device). Note if there are any strange sounding apps that are downloading a lot of data, especially if it is not an app that you yourself were directly using.
Next, flash the stock ROM again. Once you flash the new ROM, you have to find a way to root the device. Try KingRoot. Then after the phone is rooted, go to Playstore and download SD Maid. Run SD Maid and give it root access. In the settings for AppControl of SD Maid, allow it to show system apps. Then run app control and freeze any strange-looking user apps (or anyone that was downloading a lot of data) and system app that are not required.
Please, let me know about the website and how to access the ROMs.
As mentioned before, install a clean room again. Copy virustotal app from the attachment of these post (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77053739&postcount=11) to SD-card and install it. Turn wifi on and let it run. Control every app and the system-apps. Post a screenshot of the findings. If there are findings, then the room is infected. The only way to deal with this, is to root it, install rootexplorer an kill the infected app. This can be dangerous, if for example, the lauchner is infected, an alternative launcher must first be installed and set as default, before you can kill the infected one (otherwise you will own a useless phone until you flash it again ;o).
Hey guys, thanks for trying to help.
I tried literally everything before, I've even somehow got a kitchen up and running and I removed everything that looked suspicious and all those bran add-ons from the rom, but even then I'd still get infected.
I didn't really try the antivirus route though and to be honest I already shelved that phone, but I'm kinda bored, so I'll try y'all suggestions, an extra working phone can always come in handy.

Upgrading problems on Samsung P7510 tablet to Marshmallow

I'm trying to upgrade my Samsung p7510 10.1 tablet from Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 to either Marshmallow or Nougat, or better. I've installed TWRP 3.1.1 and rooted with SuperSu. I've had to assume root has worked as can't download root checker onto my tablet.
So, far I've managed to find a version of Marshmallow "ROM-STOCK_MMB29K-seed.zip" on androidfilehost.com. But when I try installing I keep getting error message "Updater process ended with signal: 4". I've wiped the Data, cleared the Cache and Dalvik Cache. Also searched the internet for info on the signal 4 problem but not found much other than to remove the "assert" line from the updater-script file in the OS zip.; that did nothing.
So, a few questions:
- Anyone know where I can get OS zips from for a Samsung P7510?
- And any ideas on resolving the signal 4 issue?
- Any other ideas?
P.S. The only reason I'm updating is I want to use it for Kindle but can only reach HTTP sites, not HTTPS. Assumed that is because it's so old that everything is out of date. And that stops me from downloading anything from just about anywhere, including Google Play.
P.P.S I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything helpful or with links that worked.
Thanks in anticipation
Might I suggest the stabelest ROM I've ever run on my P7510. I've had this installed on mine for over a year now. There are of course some minor bugs.
The signal 4 issue is most likely a Binary issue and should no longer be relevant since you should reset the device to factory and start over. Another thing is once you Root it you can't download from Google play because you now have an unverified device, it has something to do with Google Pay. You'll want to look for APKs. Although SuperSu is usable, you're going to want Majisk insted. I hear of some problems using SuperSu.
I have these files here in my PC if any of the links no longer work but you'll want to know how to flash it so you'll need the video. I'll check back soon and drop a link to my files. if you need them. I'd need to upload them to my Google Drive first.
If you have any other difficulties I'm usually here about once every week.
P.S. Your tab is better than a Kindle and I would not suggest using it as such, it runs pretty crappy that way . Amazon does have an app you can use. And I see that you have been having difficulties finding Operating Systems for your tab and yes it's because the P7510 first hit the market in March of 2011 there aren't many people doing much with it anymore. There's about 3 or 4 of us left.
Firstly, thanks for your help @Casper Young .
In particular the video was brilliant. I did have a few runs at the update, however, the process was very straightforward. The key issue was the TWRP version I was using. It was supposed to be for the P7510, but realised it was actually for the P7500, consequently the aosp files weren't loading. I think that was also the cause of the errors I was getting. And although none of the links were working I managed to get the file names from the video and sourced them from androidfilehost.com:
twrp2870-20150814-p4wifi.tar.md5
aosp-7.1-p4wifi-20170506.zip
Once I had those it was simple and the update worked smoothly.
I've also added the app from apkpure.com as Google play was a complete pain trying to get the tablet recognised. Now very pleased with the build and apps, all running very smooth.
thanks again
Glad you had no problems. There are some minor bugs. Flash doesn't work for the camera. And check your memory capacity. I use Apex Launcher for my home screen which organizes better for me.
