Nandroid - TWRP/CWM How to install? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Think I have confused myself from reading to much.
I have done the rooting now looking at doing Nandroid backup before going any further, which requires TWRP or CWM from what I have gathered I need to flash install with ODIN due to being a Samsung.
Will flashing TWRP or CWM erase my data? Looking at change the partition which requires flashing and states to do a backup as everything will be erased, so no sure if it will
Thanks for any help.

Installing a custom TWRP/CWM recovery doesn't wipe any data. However, to be on a safer side, you should take a backup.

Re-Partition of an Android-System?

Re-Partition of an Android-System?
Hello
I bricked my Acer A200
What I did:
root and unlock with SimpleTool V2
installed CWM
Started in recovery, did full wipe
after this getting the information, that /data can not be found
restart => rien ne va plus....
after this trying with fastboot, ADB, tools like TWRP, CWM etc to get something work again
manuelly cleared and also removed files and folders with ADB
at last using Weapon ROM Installer and get flashed a ROM BUT
now my internal Card ist not fully useable - the storage information says 66MB
I can not install any apps and
the system always get aback to zero, when I do a restart
I think, I bricked the internal partition of the whole system..../data is still not usable....etc...
If you have any ideas what to do - I'll be very happy and grateful for help!
Best regards,
teacherhh
Did you make a nandroid backup of your ROM before you did the full wipe??
If so, restore that and see if things are back to normal.
If not, you'll have to wait until someone with more brains walks you through reinstalling the Stock ROM image.
DISCLAIMER: I have no knowledge of your device. I'm just giving the standard advice.

Hi Haraldr,

[Q] Recovery VS Boot Partition questions, not a "bricked" issue.

Having read so many "Im bricked' threads and realizing that most people wind up in this state because they don't read directions I wanted to ask a few questions.
I have TWRP installed as my recovery partition. I have performed a backup with it having checked all partitions and options including MD5 generation.
I note that one thing I am backing up is the "Boot" partition. I assume this is the boot-loader, which is of course NOT the same thing as the TWRP recovery partition.
So to my questions:
[Q]In what way could I possibly screw up with TWRP to "brick" my device while flashing and hose the recovery partition?
From what I have read this is primarily by flashing a ROM with a recovery partition that isn't compatible with my device or bootloader?
[Q]Is there something I can do from within TWRP that would screw up recovery besides flash?
Backups don't seem to include recovery so I don't see screwing it up with a restore. However there is the WIPE menu that I havent even entered. Is it possible to wipe TWRP from the device?
Thanks, I realize these may seem like NOOB questions to some but I wanted to make sure my understanding is complete so I don't brick my device.

[Q] restore/backup rom

if i backup my current rom using CWM and i flash new rom and i dont like it or i get bootloop, if i go into cwm recovery and restore my backup rom will i have the exact rom as in all apps installed/ updated and all configurations the same as when i made the backup rom?

Yes, i do think that is the whole point.
I recommend doing a alternative backup aswell, such as titanium or helium. And when restoring to your backed up rom, do a factory reset + wipe system.
Good luck!
You really need to read the guides/tutorials stickied in the General section based on that question.

[Q] Major problem while trying to root Galaxy S3!!

I have an International Samsung galaxy S3 (GT0I9300) which is about 2 years old.
I tried rooting it using chainfire's odin installation method. The link I used is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33305784&postcount=2.
I followed all the steps correctly. All went fine until the red android came up on my phone. Then after all the process was completed, odin also showed done! But, my phone did not bootup. It is looping in the Samsung logo bootup screen.
I tried all possible methods to turn on the phone, but it still stays in the boot screen itself.
Also my phone is not going to recovery mode when i press <VolUp>+<Home>+<Power button> so that i can wipe cache data, instead it just displays the android recovery logo for a second and reboots again and loops in Samsung logo screen.
I have very valuable data stored in the phone which is not backed up!!
This phone is my daily driver, so I would require some urgent help regarding this...
Please, give me a solution to make my phone work normally as before and also help to root it if possible without any hassle!!
Thank you!

Couple of things you could try (1) flash a stock rom with odin this should restore your phone but you will lose your data (2) flash a custom recovery with Odin either Cwm,PhilZ, or Twrp when finished flashing you can boot into recovery and wipe cache etc.

Thank you for your reply!
Will flashing CWM or any of those custom recovery and wiping the cache help in rebooting normally as before? Because I don't want to get into another trouble. Can you kindly give me a link to it? And how to remove that custom recovery if i wont require it?

Link here please read instructions fully >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...covery-clockworkmod-touch-6-0-3-2-gt-t1719744 << Ideally you should wipe cache and data to stop a boot loop (but obviously you don't want to lose any data) so try wiping cache to see if that works. Even though you are stuck in a bootloop the cf auto root flash might have worked so you can try to backup data in recovery and see what happens.
To remove custom recovery you will have to reflash stock rom with Odin and you may have to accept the fact you may lose your data if it won't backup in recovery.

Alright!! Thank you!!
I'll try this method and reply if it is working.
@tallman, I just flashed the clockworkmod recovery and wiped the cache partition.
Then as you mentioned I also tried backing up from backup/restore option.
The cache is wiped properly.
When i tired backing up, i saw two or three lines of message log from CWM and then device just boots up and is stuck at Samsung logo boot screen itself again.
Any other solutions?

Looks like the root didn't take if I where you I would flash stock rom with Odin from Samfirmware (factory reset after flash) you will lose your data but you will have to put that down to experience.:fingers-crossed:

@tallman, Thanks for the advise!
Why didn't the root work?? I thought the root worked as CWM requires root permission right?
Is there any other way to just bootup my device without having to flash a new ROM?? What is the reason for the root access to be denied? Can it never be rooted?
PS: Because I don't wanna lose any data. I had about 250-300 apps which I have been using and had saved a lot of info in them.

Yes you can boot to cwm again and wipe data cache etc but like I said all options now involve loosing your data.Plus this is not guaranteed to work depending on what whent wrong with your cf Auto -Root flash. That is why I suggested flashing back to stock with Odin this will return your phone to how it was before it was messed up (minus your data of course).

Okay thank you for the help!!
I'll wipe the data or flash a new rom.
Will stock rom not require root access?
Is flashing a custom Rom same as flashing the stock Rom?
Anyone else have any other suggestion?

Sorry just saw your question about cwm requiring root..No Cwm or any custom recovery does not reqire root, recovery is a separate partition root is acquired through your rom. Technically you can flash a custom recovery and a custom rom without root because root is included in all custom roms. You need root to access system files that is why cwm failed to backup your data because it needs access to your system which it cannot have without root.Stock roms don't have root built in that is why you need to root them to access system files unlike custom roms which like I said have root built in to them

Oh! Alright! :good:
So I guess I'll be flashing a custom rom with kitkat as I'll be losing the data anyways.
All the data in external sd will be intact right?

Yes ext sd will be fine this is where you will need to put your custom Rom anyway to flash it.Please read all the guides in the stickies before you start to make sure you know what you are doing. Also read the stickies about backing up your efs (VERY IMPORTANT) because if you don't back it up then you may have major problems later if you run into problems.

Anyways, I'll wait a few more days and try to figure out a way to restore my existing stock rom to work.
If not there is no other choice left but to flash a new one...
Is there any way to root my phone again and try backing up the data?? Will it work?
Or is there any working recovery software so that i can create an image of the memory?

Issue with Flashing the Stock ROM

Hello, i currently have a Redmi 5 Plus (Vince). I tried flashing a ZIP file and ended up killing the system, so i decided to flash a custom ROM. I got Lineage OS, but a day after i decided to get back to the stock ROM. But, when i am trying to flash the stock ROM, even though it says it was successful i am still stuck in bootloop. I will be really thankful if anyone could help me with this.

Ever that you think to start to flash something onto your device is recommendable to backup at least some critical partitions like EFS, modem, maybe bootloader so if something goes wrong you can solve it.
Now as you need to format data and this will erase partitions like data and 0 (sdcard) in the case you have some important files (musics, pictures and others) you could need to backup them before to start the process.
Miui roms is decrypted by default so in order to can reboot you need to format data.
