When will we see Qi Wireless charging functionality built into Sony Xperia smartphones? Now that Nokia has it built in to their new Windows 8 phones I hope we will see it soon from Sony hopefully beginning with their phones announced at CES 2013. When do you think it will happen? Xperia 2013? 2014?
P.S. Sony is a member of the Qi Wireless power consortium standard body:

Info about new Nokia's with Qi built in:

Our XS has NFC, by what i learn energy could be transfer through NFC! Why won't we get Wireless Charging too!

I wouldn't trust too much of what Nokia or Microsoft tell you about the new Lumias. They are so desperate, they have to fake camera footage to sell phones...

They are certainly not lying about the inclusion of the Qi technology in their Lumias.
And this is certainly nothing new or novel, even the first PalmPre from 2009 had a wireless "Touchstone Charger". Electric toothbrushes are using it for many years now.
This is just one of many useful and already well known things manufacturers choose to completely ignore.
I don't know, maybe it is just "let us save that for later upgrades" thing. Or they are just waiting until apple "invents" it.

Dude, get a life or get real.
I don't really see the point in wireless charging. If you pick up your phone it'll stop charging. If I'd want my phone charging in a fixed position I'd get a dock.

Agree, plus;
I don't want to buy another "wireless dock" to charge my phone at work, in the car, at my friends [who's phone uses micro-usb] How can I dock AND transfer files and charge? My electric beard trimmer uses Micro-USB, so I can share the cable, it makes sense to have most things backwards-compatible.

Bringing this thread back to life, any one game enough to do this to their Xperia phone?
Adding Qi support to Samsung Galaxy III
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxgHbBhybYY
Just so others can find this topic too, we're talking about conductive charging / wireless charging for our Xperia 2012 devices.
The manufacturer UWay sell 'charging clips' which is basically a plastic pad which the phone can sit in and be connected via USB micro, the problem is the USB microconnector is fixed in the top/bottom center position where our USB port is positioned on the right-side.
http://www.uway-qi.com/Productsshow.asp?ID=26
UWay also sell the 'raw guts' coil with board solution from which you'd then cover and solder into the USB micro voltage port; not forgetting to ground it.
http://www.uway-qi.com/Productsshow.asp?ID=26
I'm going to buy a thin plastic sleeve case for my Sola and one of the raw gut items and see if I can get the two to play. Have e-mailed UWay, waiting a response, will update as I go.
U-Way are sending their charging clip as well as receiver board solution, also got a cheap thin case and right angled USB micro cable for this proof of concept. Will update in 2 weeks when parts arrive.

You do realise you dont have to use the wireless charging if you dont want to, its a cool feature to have, wires can be messy, this is a lot neater.
actually, having the Palm wireless charging dock or the Sony Ericsson LiveDock is the samething... the only difference is that the Palm one doesnt connect direct to the phone, but the sony one does connect to the microusb port. except that, the amount of cables is pretty much the same, the situation where u can use your phone without stop charging is the same, blablablablabla
I just copy this comment from youtube:
Y0UTU8E2012:
Not really wireless if you have to put it on top of that block. I would rather use the wire to charge so I could still use the phone in my hand while it was charging. If it would charge within a 5ft radius, that would be wireless.

Both the Palm wireless charging dock and the Sony Ericsson LiveDock charge a single device. The Sony Ericsson LiveDock is an expensive powered USB port with a unique identifier for LiveWare integration.

I'd do the same as you if I wanted to keep my phone charging, this is a WIP, I'm a shaky hand at the best of times so won't be soldering onto the USB port until I'm 99% sure it's going to work. Seeing the Xperia Arc and Galaxy Note II on the frontpage today is boosting my confidence. Proof of concept is an external case connected via the micro USB port, once that's working then I'll toss up doing the internal mod.

I know I don't have to. I just stated that this feature is absolutely unnecessary because docks are identical, just not 'as cool'.

Received two receivers from U-Way last week, waiting on 3-unit charging pad to arrive.
On my HD2 you can use a charging wafer in between the battery and the back-door to connect to 2-pins intended for a dedicated car charging cover, our Sola does not have this capability so connecting via the micro-USB port externally is my first point of business.
The receivers I've received include their own power management module so it 'may' be possible to connect directly to the battery. I'll test this on a replacement battery after phase I.
Here's the plan:
Phase I - Difficulty: Easy | Danger: None
Connect charging coil to micro-USB via modified male micro-USB connection (coil and charging module are attached to case, micro-USB cable is soldered to charging module, no mod to phone)
Phase II - Difficulty: Medium | Danger: Medium
Connect coil to internal micro-USB (drop the charging module and connect charging coil directly to phone, phone's hardware manages the voltage and cuts it off as if a USB cable is plugged in, requires pulling the phone apart though... *brick*)
Phase III - Difficulty: Medium | Danger: High
Connect directly to internal battery via charging module (charging module manages the voltage, requires modified back cover and/or modified case, requires pulling the phone apart... *brick*).
I'll add photos of the gear shortly.

Right guys I'm so ticked off right now. I bought two adapters. One a couple months ago. I lost it. Another one (the deff one from clove) a few weeks ago. I also lost that. Because they were both £10+ each its pissed me off a bit more.
My question is has anyone bought one which is good and has a strong magnet? I was considering these Sony cables that are on eBay, obviously fakes for the price they are but I'm not sure. What's your guys opinions?

Hi, I recevied a magnetic cable bought on ebay (10 euro). I tried it yesterday for the first time and after 6hours of charger the battery level was 52%. The magnetic connection is no strong and I think that cable doesn't work properly.
I will try to buy the adaptor suggest by @tonysunshine
i brought this one over 6 months ago works perfect only goes on one way says + / - on the plug if put on wrong way phone will turn itself off so not sure how MotoXoom fried his ?
+ goes at the top
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magnetic-...9H-Reliable-/201075389377?hash=item2ed106f3c1
i haven't used one myself yet. but a friend bought magnector x cable. and it seems to work pretty fine. magnet is strong charges quick. but not as fast as official dock or usb. but it seems pretty nice as most of the cases are not dock compatible.
http://www.amazon.com/Magnector-Per...qid=1411902689&sr=8-1&keywords=magnector+x+z2
I agree the magnector x is pretty good and the magnet is not all that bad, one thing to mention is that the magnector x is not compatible with all cases as the sides may disconnect the magnet.
My first one was the magnector-x but I found with that when I picked up the phone it would just fall off. Same with the deff. The problem I had with that is the fact that the charger wire seemed to be in opposite direction to the connector and therefore ended up not sitting correctly

MotoXoom bought a charger cable that does not have the cut off feature or detects that the charge has been connected the wrong way. So he basically shorted out hsi phone because it did not cut out. This was NOT a magnector-x adapter
The cable i brought doesn’t have a cut off feature? The phone has it, if you put a positive on a positive the phone shuts off.
As far as I know there is no protection whatsoever except for the mechanical small asymmetry (look at the phone connector and compare the "lower" with "upper" plastic tabs).
Certainly there is no electronic protection in the phone. Some phones survived "reverse connection", some not.
I don't think it can be any electronic protection in the cable or charger; they are designed to give out 0.5-1-2A and certainly that are most likely enough to fry the phone. MAYBE some wimpy chargers aren't capable of that but it's better to assume all are dangerous.
Has anyone ever tried one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161404030047?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magnetic-...lePhonesCasesPouches&var=&hash=item4d2641788c

Can you tell us the "week" of the device? You can go under the right flap, there's some plastic tray (similar to the sim tray on the left) there should be the IMEI and some other info, including something like 14W15 (meaning for example 2014 week 15). I've heard the ones after 18 shouldn't have the "unglued magnetic port" problem.
But yes, I really had to get the device for the 2 feature missing on most other phone (waterproof with external no-flap-removal charging and lanyard attachment point) but the S5 would've been better in every other way. Including the fact that 5>2 and it seems it counts. Probably Z5 would be perfect, if we ever get to that.
I have a pain in the bum case on atm and it will some work removing it. I just had another look at the magnetic port and yes it can be completely removed by just the magnet. From looking at the port there appears to be two pins and what appears to be some glue in the middle.
Could I not just super glue the port back into the phone?
If I look closely enough I can see that pressing down on the magnetic port opens up a smallish gap which I would assume would let water in.
My magnetic port moves too if a push it (even a little). And it was supposed to be from the new fixed batches.
WTF Sony? Metal and glass phone, parts held together by spit.

I have this as well, it's the only adapter that actually charges my phone in my car. Even the stock dock doesn't work! Very good magnet as well.
Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a car dock for my Nexus 6 similar to the pro clip or this fix2car mount http://www.holdersandmounts.co.uk/f...on-mount-dash-mount-with-usb-car-charger.html[1]
Basically my criteria are that I want to be able to take the phone in and out of the mount without having to attach the USB cable after. I want the USB cable to be fixed and the phone simply slides in to it.
The pro clip would cost me 150$+ and the fix2car one I linked would run me close to 70$. I'm looking for something about half that price.
Hope you guys can help!
Thanks
0 replies on XDA and on reddit, something tells me i'm about to drop a hundred bucks on a car mount... AGAIN!
PSA to anyone thinking about it: DO NOT get the airdock 2, it's a piece of poop and the phone falls off constantly.
If you must have the fixed plug, you could hack one in place with some JB Weld. A lot of guys did just that back in the "old" days.
Or suguru, that stuff works great for something like this. BTW, my airdock works great.

If you would like to charge your phone in a car dock without having to attach USB each time why don't you get the QI charging dock? It is about $35-$40 here in US, probably about same in UK. And will work with non-bulky case.

welllllllll the reason why im trying to avoid a QI charging dock (which btw is not a make or model but the technology, can you specify which model you're referring to?) is because i bought this neato quick charge usb lighter thingy and i'd like to be able to use quick charge..... wireless QI charging is pretty slow and when having the screen on, and steaming music, and using maps for nav, it doesn't actually gain any charge!

the problem is that QI will bottleneck your charging. using a quickcharge usb lighter thing will work via a cable but not through QI!
QI will support up to 15 watts of charging in the future, it was actually announced like a couple of weeks ago or something, so future models will support quick charging
I have quick charger at work and at home. In the car I need the dock I can use with minimum effort and without connecting/disconnecting USB frequently

it can if you have it completely tightened down, but you would not be able to pull the phone in and out if it was tightened down. the way i have it now is the clamp holds on to the lip of the phone but not so tightly that I can't easily put the phone in and out of the dock. The clamp does not press on the buttons, this way.
Hi there,
I am looking for a way to charge my i9100 without using the usb port, as it is broken. I do know some phones have external charging pins hidden under the battery cover - my wife's Nexus S has those. Nonetheless I couldn't find them on my Galaxy S II. Anyone had some experience with this? I do know one can buy and replace the usb port together with the whole bottom circuit board, which would probably fix my problem. But I got the phone for free to use before buying a new one and I did not want to put any money into it

Hi namarath,
I have the same problem. The usb flex cable I bought to exchange the broken one was broken itself, which is common. As a solution I bought an external battery charger for just 5 Euro on Aliexpress. Works fine since I have two batteries. The indicator light switches from pink to blue when charged. Be warned that this light is bright like disco lights

Buying a broken replacement USB port/board assembly is NOT common......buying the WRONG version of the board IS common....There are 4 different non interchangeable versions.
See this guide that I wrote for explanations.....

It looks like it can be a real pain to remove if you want to use someone else's cable to charge. Either that or you're going to be carrying your own cable everywhere or carry the cable adapter and risk/probably lose it.
I feel like this is going to be outdated technology when apple introduces something along the lines of there own wireless charger + bluetooth syncing. Apple has 'pioneered' this in the laptops for a while. They also 'invented' the iphones. I'm sure they thought of putting the magnetic ends to it since they also love creating there unique connectors. There's a few reasons why a small magnetic connector like that wouldn't work. For one, the magnetic strength isn't going to be good. It already sucks on the current 'v2' of the mag connector.
USB-C, or 3.1, can easily support a 2amp current to a Qi Charger in addition to carrying data from a bluetooth transmitter to send data back to the host/computer device. That or the phone can sync via bluetooth directly with the computer.

Well its a good idea for people who have a tablet that doesn't support qi charging. I highly doubt crapple will incorporate wireless charging anytime soon considering how slow they were to add NFC. I backed out for my Shield Tablet and the possibility of USB 3.1 Type-C support

You could always cut the end off the cut out a little to make it fit. I already "ordered" mine from their backing website that was set up. I bought 3 USB 3.1 Type-C ones, 3 micro USB connectors, and 2 of each cable adapter along with keychains to hold them when I goto class. My micro USB ones should ship out soon so I'll have to post a review if them when they arrive. I plan to use them on my Nvidia Shield Tablet LTE and my two Nexus 6's
