[Q] Verizon Phones - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am just wondering why none of the current Verizon Pre-Paid phones are on here? Can you not get CM12 on any of these phones? What is the reason?
HTC Desire 612 (Doesn't even show up on XDA Forum as a valid phone????)
LG Transpyre (Doesn't even show up on XDA Forum as a valid phone????)
Motorola RAZR M (I know this is an old phone and Motorola pached it making it un-hackable)
What gives? Has development just come to a halt?

For a device to receive its own forum on XDA, it has to have significant development, or at least the likelihood/potential for it. Verizon is undoubtedly the worst company when it comes to freedom for development. Unrootable devices, locked bootloaders, and the fact that only devices sold by Verizon will work on their network. AT&T is pretty bad too when it comes to this sort of thing, but at least they allow unlocked devices on their network. A custom ROM requires an unlocked bootloader. Or root, with Safestrap (including Safestrap developed for the phone). Verizon does their best to disallow both.
If you want freedom, go with T-Mobile or AT&T. T-Moible is definitely the "freest" of the carriers, but AT&T has the more expansive network. Or go with one of their MVNOs/subsidiaries like Cricket, MetroPCS, StraightTalk, etc,

Feel free to request a device forum in the thread below, if you haven't already done so.

So Verizon is the worst because they lock down there devices the best... That stinks because where I live, they have the BEST network .... I ended up with the LG Transpyre and was able to unlock the bootloader without any problems... However there are no ROMs for this phone... I got CM12 to work on it using LG Optimus F60 with only miner issues (camera doesn't work, and WiFi turns off without a problem, but takes FOREVER to turn back on)..... SO, I guess me being able to do this with ease... I am shocked know one else has done this!

Which us cellular android phone?

Hello xda, I was Judy wondering if any of you could help me out with a problem I'm having. I might be getting an android phone, the only problem is that I'm on us cellular and there doesn't appear to be top many options. My phone options are the htc hero s, Motorola electrify, Samsung repp, htc wildfire s, htc merge and huaweii ascend ii ( sorry if I spelled that wrong).
IM looking for a phone with some support of development community behind it, whether it be on xda or some other forum/ website.
Thank you and IM sorry if this its in the wrong forum.

They are CDMA so if may be possible to activate an unlocked Verizon or maybe Sprint phone but you wouldn't get carrier subsidized pricing so it would be more expensive and may be harder to activate.
Motorola doesn't want to unlock bootloaders while HTC has recently made it possible to unlock bootloaders on recent models. Unfortunately the US Cellular versions of any android phone are going to have less dev support because US Cell is a smaller carrier meaning less device owners.

I didn't know that, (sorry I'm a noob at phones). I remember when my dad broke his phone (some cheap thing), my brother's old phone was the same model, os he went into the store and they made it his phone without a problem. Do you think they would be willing to do that if I brought in an unlocked verizon phone?
Thanks for replying.
I'm not for sure if a Verizon phone will work, technology wise it has the hardware to communicate with US Cellular since its CDMA, but it may require some software changes to work on their network. Also it depends if they will activate non carrier devices.

Yeah they probably wouldn't allow it.
Hopefully at least one of these phones has some rom development somewhere on the internet, or I can get the wildfire and just remove sense from it without a problem.

[Q] Flash L9 Metro PCS to Tmobile?

A friend of mine has tasked me to help him as I have some experience with rooting, unlocking etc from other Android phones. Someone sold him a Metro PCS version of the LG Optimus L9 and he has a family plan on T-Mobile. He wants to give this phone to his daughter. Anyways, Since the phone runs on the T-Mobile network, is it possible to flash the phone so that he can put it on his T-Mobile plan? I have looked through the forums and have not found anything of this nature but I do apologize if I have missed it. It is not necessary to go into great detail for this, I jsut want to know if it is possible and a good place to start if it is possible. Thanks for your time!

The only thing I can assume would work is tp buy an unlock code on ebay or amazon and unlock it. t-mobile blows where I am so I unlocked my phone and am now on att
Sent from a Crackhead Donkey
im sure it would work. i have a rooted tmobile branded L9 using a slightly modified metro rom with a tmo sim. it actually shows metro under about phone/network. it is rooted. so if u havent already tried a puting a tmo sim in it and seeing if it worked then rooting might be your answer.

Wanting to Unlock Metro MS769 to work on TMobile or Simple Mobile Network

Hey guys,
I have the Metro PCS version of the LG L9, & I want to unlock it to work on TMobile or Simple Mobiles network for my mother..... Could someone point me into the right direction? I'm sure I have to root, & unlock the bootloader, is there a custom rom that would solve this that I could use? Or is it more complicated.
I'm used to the rooting the LG G2, & got my Sprint version G2 to work on Metro, Tmobile, & Simple Mobile, so this phone is something new to me. Thanx for the help.

Sounds like a carrier lock. You have two options... 1) Purchase unlock code online or 2) Call MetroPCS and ask them for carrier unlock code.
I'm sure there's a way around that..... I've successfully unlocked my Sprint version of the G2, without having to have Sprint give me an unlock code.
That phone was pretty complicated to unlock, but it was done. So I'm sure this phone should have a work around also.
From what I'm seeing so far, the P769 is basically just about the same as the Metro PCS version. I just want to make sure I can do it, without having to call Metro PCS. I don't even have an account with them anymore. It's been a couple years. So I doubt they would give me the code anyways.

You asked. I answered. Best of luck FYI, that P769 is nothing like LG G2. I'm assuming you're aware of that already as you mentioned the bootloader was already unlocked. P769 is one of the most problematic devices LG has put out to date. I gave up on mine L9 P769 and moved to the LG L90.
Thanx.
Yea, I'm definitely aware that the 2 phones differ. I love my G2! It's an awesome phone. Complicated as far as carrier unlock, because Sprint has a tight grip on their phones, but it definitely can be hacked whether they like it or not! Lol.
I'm just trying to find out the easiest way to get this phone working on a different carrier besides Metro PCS. I'm pretty sure someone out there has tried it. It would be nice if there was someone who successfully did it.
Hello there do u have still that phone?

Galaxy S6 Edge- Will I Lose Data Flashing My Phone To AT&T?

Android newb... will I lose anything flashing my unlocked international phone on AT&T
Hi everyone, and thanks for all the great info here. Let's assume I have my "how to root" links bookmarked and ready to go, but like a good boyscout I want to understand the gotchas/subtleties before I cliff jump. I'm also within my 15 days to exchange my s6edge AT&T for an unlocked one at Best Buy, which I plan to do today... :highfive:
(I'm technically savy, but a real newb in the world of android versions, manufacturer changes, and carrier versions and conflicts...) :crying:
1) How do I do a full ROM-level backup before beginning my adventures in rooting? Titanium Backup is no good since I need root to use it. I'd like an iPhone-style backup that I can just restore should I brick my phone.
2) After I exchange my phone I'm going to immediately airplane-mode it to prevent autoupdates (my current phone already autoupdated to unrootable OF4)... once I root how do I effectively get-latest? I'd obviously like the latest security updates, and 5.1 if I can manage it, and to maintain root.
3) AT&T doesn't have 5.1.... but if I go unlocked then can I run 5.1 on AT&T? (I've been iPhone forever -- carriers messing with you is really foreign to me). On a related note, can AT&T send some update/profile-change OTA to my phone that will conflict with updates I'm doing locally? If so any tips to avoid this?
4) An unlocked phone will perform just as well on AT&T as an AT&t phone, right? (looks like the 925F has all the AT&T bands and more, whereas the 925I is missing 1 AT&T LTE band)
Thanks for any info, help, and/or pointing me to resources where I can find the info, in advance. I'm technically savy, but a real newb when it comes to the gotcha-ridden ground of android and carriers.
Thanks again.
- Jason
So can I upgrade a 925F to 5.1 and use it on AT&T? I'm trying to work out if AT&T has _all_ edges locked down or just the official AT&T versions.

At&t does not have the power to lock down all variants; only the variant with its branding. Just make sure 925F is compatible with the network of you want to use that variant.

Thanks so much. Is there a reason I can't to seem to find any people running 5.1 or rooted phones on AT&T? Just that not many people are buying unlocked phones?

The at&t variant is the only variant not to receive 5.1 yet. It has nothing to do with root and everything to do with at&t's corporate policies. Most people who use a smartphone in the USA buy it through their carrier. So those users on at&t likely bought there phone from them. This is why no 5.1 for them.

Will Straighttalk SIM work on unlocked H901?

Hello
I'm with ATT, but I want to switch to StraightTalk, since here in Miami, they use ATT anyways.
I also want to upgrade to the LG V10, but I want to get the T-Mobile variant (H901) since that one can be rooted.
So. Can I buy an H901 from ebay, wherever that is unlocked, and use the StraightTalk SIM on it? I will be able to root it, and get a sim card from StraightTalk that will work with ATT. Right?
Thanks
There should be no issue I have unlocked att phones I have use with t-mobile before might check to see what bands of lte att uses most In your area and check what bands the h901 uses
Buy an already unlocked Tmo phone if you can. If not, still OK, just get it unlocked. I would suggest buying from Amazon over eBay, better quality overall, less like to get ripped off, better sellers. As long as the device itself is fully paid they should unlock it. I've gone through major hassles getting my H901 unlocked, but it's done, as of today.
As far as Straight Talk, it should work. Tmo and ATT are mostly compatible with each other as far as networks are concerned. But check first. They both use SIM cards, so does ST. You should be able to switch pretty easily.
At work, we are affiliated with mywit.com, where we can buy refurbished phones in very good condition.
If I buy a T-Mobile phone that is locked to T-Mobile (as it says in the description), how would I use it on ATT until I decide to switch to StraightTalk?
The switch to Straight Talk involves our 3 phones, so it's something that I have to plan out; one of the phones lives in another city. So, I have to remain with ATT for now. How do I get this H901 to work with ATT? Can I do that somehow?
@nabril15: The answer is simple:
You cant use the phones with ATT or ST until they are unlocked from T-Mo's network. You can use T-Mo's Device Unlock app to get a temp unlock, but that only lasts 30 days. On the other hand, you should theoretically have no issues getting unlocks for all devices involved, if they are paid in full.

And I can get this done by calling TMobile to unlock it even though I am NOT a customer of theirs?

No, t mobile won't unlock it for you if you're not a customer, feel free to try but i doubt they will
Check Swappa, usually on of the best prices and sellers will say if unlocked - also i believe i saw them on eBay for like 250$ unlocked and refurbished
I recently purchased the H901 unlocked from the guys at Mytecell on Swappa. I'm on att. Had to do some research on entering a new APN to get data and MMS to work, but overall satisfied.
Does anyone know if root or which roms will allow wifi calling on att networks?
To my knowledge you can only use WiFi calling on a Tmo-issued phone if you are on Tmo's network. Doesnt matter if you're rooted or what ROM you use, there is probably a server side check. And you generally can only use Tmo wifi-calling on stock based ROMs, no AOSP/CM.
