Suggest a ROM for my dad... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My dad has GSII (I9100, the "original" S2) and it feels kinda sluggish compared to my One S C2(pretty much HTC Sensation) and it also lacks app space(I have moved all of them to SD card but still cant install new apps). Since I'm going to reinstall it I might aswell install some other ROM. It needs to be almost fully stable with all the features working and it would be nice if it had touchwiz(my dad isnt a power user and doesnt like to adopt to new things). I don't know how much faster non-touchwiz ROMs are so you can suggest some of those too. Also I don't really know yet how to install custom ROMs on GSII except for the stock one but I'm sure I'll find info on how to do that. Oh, performance and battery life should be balanced although my dad has 4 batteries
Thank you for your help!
EDIT: after some searching I have realized that 95% of roms are without touchwiz... So just suggest any ROM that is stable and smooth

Hey!
To root your phone, head here: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/galaxys2-i9100-root-android412-jellybean-install-clockworkmod-445008
1. Neat ROM: is perhaps based on Touchwiz. Also, it has had a huge support. So, it should fit your Dad's expectations.
2. SlimSaber 4.4.4: I guess pretty much the best non-touchwiz ROM for the S2. And stable as well!
3. Go ahead and try out Lollipop ROMs as well, although they are still under work and can have some bugs: CM12.1, Resurrection Remix , BlissPOP, SlimLP and many more.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Big thanks for your help man! I think I'll try both of the ROMs you suggested, but not going to try lollipop because my classmate has GSII with it and its just too buggy. Gonna report back on how it went.

Try http://www.cyanogenmod.org/, that's how i started with custom ROM's, they have "idiot friendly" way of installing their ROM, you just install app form google store and follow setup proces, really easy. Very stable ROM also. I still use Cyanogenmod, bus some unnoficial lolipop version. I recomend it!

Slimsaber 4.4.4 by fusionjack. Would recommend it to anyone on XDA and to friends and family.

[Q] Installing Vanilla Android on SGS2

Hi,
Is it possible to install Vanilla Android 2.3.X on Galaxy S2 ? i am not impressed by the bloat that is currently installed by Samsung (or lite'ning rom for that matter). I would like to start fresh with vanilla and start customizing (i am looking for something that a Nexus S customer would see on their phones...pure google experience or whatever they call it...)
I have looked at Development thread/googled but to no avail.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction ?
Thanks !!!
Hey, I wanted to know if there is any progress here, I'm looking for something quite the same, a minimal original android software.
Yes, from what I've searched because i love Aosp android myself. Basically you have two options, one is to flash Cyanogen mod 7, its based off stock android and has all the stock apps, has stock everything. The other option is another rom thats just stock android no CM and is built by a guy named adamG.
Cm7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112916
Stock Aosp by adam G http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183063
Thanks for the quick reply!
So, I think the CM7 is a better choice, only because it's better known than the other rom and has more support.
I heard that soon Samsung will release a 2.3.4 rom. Will it be stock android (vanilla)?

Nope! Haha the chance of samsung releasing a stock android version is second to none. Touchwiz is their baby, they market the whole GS2 experience based off touchwiz, they will never ever release a stock android version. Your only option is either cm7 or other roms and yes, cm is quite nice i just flashed it today, first rom flash on this thing for me. I really like the no frills android experience.
Though!!! Keep in mind that since CM7 is still in the testing phase, expect some functionality from the stock samsung rom to be lost, id give the thread a good read before deciding to flash or not. One major example is that 1080P recording will not work on cm7.
just a word of warning, CM7 or the devNULL, both are still at their infancy with some limitations. If the limitations bother you, wait a few days, at least for the CM7 release version.
I see. Well, basically I'm looking for the minimalist rom (in order to save battery life).
If the CM7 it is, than it only make things easier.
If you are looking for "minimalist" indeed, check this one out too, based on CM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170249
I am dying to check this out, the only thing keeping me off is the effort t re-install and re-customize another rom within a few hours
Wow, it looks great! minimal look is the best.
But I see that all those rom are still in beta..
So, the only way to disable Touchwiz completely and get the "stock interface" is to install another rom?

you can install another launcher, i.e. launcher pro. but that is only a home screen/launcher replacement the touchwiz apps/menus will still be there.
But it will kill my battery.
OK, so those 3 roms are my best shot.. thanks!

Best TW ROM & kernal for Fascinate?

I need the best, most working, stable ROM & kernal combo available for my fassy, I prefer TW though? I use the phone as a daily driver, mainly I use almost every option that stock offers on a day-to-day basis so it must all be functional... And customization is always a great thing, please comment with any helpful info on this. Any helpful info on this is much appreciated, I dropped my EvO in the lake a week or so ago and had to go buy my Fassy. I am not new to rooting or ROMing phones, but I have found it is most helpful to get others insight on these types of things before trying EVERY ROM for a day or so lol? I am running Baked JB right now, but as I said I'm a little partial to the TW OS, and battery life isnt as fantastic.
Thanks in advance,
Ben :silly:
Try GeeWiz 2.8.1 with its own kernel. It's still Gingerbread though. There aren't any TouchWiz ICS or JB roms out there. You could also try AOKP M6 and install a TouchWiz theme from the play store.

kernel (though I can't recall exactly why . Something about the behavior of the backlights?
I'm now running cm10 and loving it. Everything works.

Like scarfman said, geewiz 2.8 is the best TW rom for stability...Superclean 3 was also good , just had to deal with a random reboot.

I'm currently running (pa_fascinate-4.0-BETA-20140103.zip) it's a KitKat 4.4.2 ROM. GAPPS are (pa_gapps-modular-full-4.4.2-20140318-signed.zip). It runs great with no Lag. To install you need to use Team Win Recovery.

[Q] Fastest/Most Stable i717 4.1.1+ Rom?

Hi Forum
Just curious for your opinions on what the fastest 4.1.1+ ROM is. Also another one I'm curious about is the most stable.
All opinions are welcome!
Thanks in advance!
Xda is a development site and doesn't want to be an opinion site. Your encouraged to try all the roms yourself and see what works best for you. No two devices are alike so what works best for you on your device won't necessarily work for others.

This is a forum.. a Q/A forum in fact.. opinions are welcome! I have the same question.. I've tried several roms and so far they all have been pretty stable yet all have been bigtime sluggish/laggy. All that I've tried were 4.4 roms. Are the 4.1/2 roms any better? If I use the overclocking at min 1000 max 1500 I get pretty decent performance but stock is just terrible. I'm gonna try a 4.1 rom now but if anyone has any daily drivers that are peppy and stable from 4.1 and up I'd appreciate opinions.. as the op would I'd assume.
Ok.. so I ended up giving a 4.1 rom a try.. Liquid-jb-v.20-rc7 to be exact and a HUGE difference in speed.. everything is peppy and smooth at stock speeds in fact not a huge difference from my LG G2 in cruising the system and the internet via Boat browser. I tested Cameras/GPS/Bluetooth everything is perfect working order.. and after a few hours of use no fc's or reboots. Battery life .. only time will tell but my battery is old and has always been terrible. Only other thing is terrible charging speed.. even with the fast charge option in the settings. If anyone has any experience with this let me know. So overall this rom i give :good::good:

In my humble opinion so far trying a bunch I've come down to Liquid smooth for 4.42 Kit Kat.
If that is where you want to go. That is the latest version only. With Polluti0n's wonderful patches.
Mine using "Uber". Fairly smooth fairly fast. Not to great on battery, but still "tweaking" away.
I've tried so many Roms and versions of those Roms I thought I would save you some frustration.
I've had a lot.
I moved my service to TMobile and am now using Flapjaxx's ROM with wifi calling and couldn't be happier. This is the stock ROM with all the S-Pen apps and wifi calling and is smooth as butter and fast with no tweaking needed. I actually like Samsung'g skin.
A very good and stable ROM is bigfau's blackstar ROM and if it had wifi calling, it'd be my daily driver.
A gave all the KK ROMS as spin and hats off to the devs working on giving it to us but they all require too many patches and some still get FCs, etc.
i'm in the same boat as you guys, looking for a stable rom for my sisters Gnote, tried cm10.1 and aokp non OC. CM keeps restarting, and aokp is pretty sluggish. i will give liquid JB a try, you guys think that i should maybe try an ICS rom mayeb it will be a bit faster?
I have been running Unofficial AOKP 4.4.2 Rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609761. It is the most stable 4.4.2 rom I have used. Other roms always crash during youtube and video playback causing a full reboot. I like Unofficial CM 11. But the gallery crashes if there is an mp4 file in it. If you don't care for AOKP. AOCP is by far the best Jelly Bean ROM. (4.3).
Well for me i flashed the canadian rooted base version (its crazy how the att rom is overbloated ) with the phaze kernel and the multiwindow mod . That the best experience i ever had no random reboot like the aosp roms and no lag ( I use the seeder app that reduce most stock jb lags )

[Q] Most stable stock ROM 4.4.2?

My choose would be Blekotas S5 Rom
Instead i suggest Imperium KitKat
The best thing? Try them both and choose yourself
base on archiport you can try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-ultimarom-v16-0-typhoon-t1911572
i use qs kk since couple of weeks, never have a reboot or problems, just wps isnt actually working, i think is the most stable stock porting,
I recommend qs rom with boeffla kernel 6.1 beta 3. I'm using for a few days and no fc or reboots. Also very stable and fast
My opinion Omni rom 4.4.4 Rom is one of the fastest rom i've ever seen, and i've never noticed even one unstability issue(only in an update that it has now been fixed).
This is a good choice if you like pure android and pure speed
Also give a try to enable art runtime at developer settings,it makes phone uses less memory and less battery (and battery life is extremely well)
For stock samsung TW rom, all of the roms are currently unstable builds

This is a very open ended question. What maybe stable for one will not be for another. All you will archive is a topic full of people saying "x" one is better. (Which is already happening).
Best thing to do is read up on all roms you are interested and try them out for yourself and your setup. With titanium backup its not hard these days.
As an example I use temasek unofficial cm11. I have never had an issue with it and its always worked perfectly but if you were to search the forums about cm issues you would find 100's of topics about camera issues etc.

Take a picture / record a video with cm11 and with stock sammy camera.
Try to focus video on cm, manually, and try to get good, non-grainy pictures on cm, you can not do that as good as on stock sammy camera.
I tested many many roms based on cm, and none of them got a good (for me) image.
P.S. i'm a heavy snapper, for other who take few pictures it'll do good.
Please can someone get me the quaraqumus QS-i9300-KK-v2.6 resumable link
Don't try Archiport, it works slow. i prefer QS port, so try every rom based on QS . I use clean with some addons from Bloatware.

[Q] Advice a ROM please

My friend's got SGS2 and he's low on money to buy a new phone at the time.
I myself owned sgs2, but several years ago, i.e. not tracking sgs2 threads now.
He's on stock now, but it's barely working, memory is over9000 full, ram's eaten by everything that can eat it.
I know I could just clear the stock, but it's kinda boring, I saw there are already Lollipop ROMs for sgs2 that seems to be working just fine (like Resurrection), but I'd like someone else's opinion.
Question is to those who still own and use sgs2 as a daily driver, what ROM should I install for him?
He's retarded in terms of everything related to technology, so he needs something that would work rock steady and stable, without bugs and errors, i.e. no beta\alpha builds.
I need to flash him some stable ROM, configure it and forget about it.
Advice needed, will be much appreciated, very thanks, wow!

OK, there are heaps of options out there.....
If he uses a lot of apps I would steer clear of lollipop roms for now as the os uses a lot of memory at present and they haven't quite got to the "rock steady, no bugs" stage just yet. You could try a minimalist rom like neatrom or slimsaber on kitkat, they are very good for performance and battery life. Ressurection remix 5.1.5 kitkat is also very good, a slightly older version of kitkat but based on cyanogenmod, so has themes and other stuff. Even older jellybean roms such as cm10 or vanilla rootbox are also highly recommended.
I'm currently using slimsaber by @fusionjack with dorimanx 10.44v008 kernel by @cybernetus as my daily driver at the moment and it would definately tick all your boxes
