As per the thread title, I have a new Rogers Sgp621 on 23.0.1.A.30 (4.4.4) As it's Rogers device, the bootloader is not unlockable.
I understand the lollipop method - flash z3 system, root, etc, as per guides here. My question is, is all that necessary or is this stock KK firmware vulnerable to towelroot or other simple methods, and if so would it be easier to root this firmware, install recovery, then flash a prescription rooted lollipop? Or should I just upgrade normally and follow the instructions for rooting the latest firmware?

I recently got a network unlocked ST18a and upgraded through the phone's Wi-Fi to build 4.0.1.A.0.283 (Gingerbread 2.3.4 branded by Canada's Telus Mobility). It's now on the highest build available via OTA upgrade (I didn't want to install Sony's software on my laptop). I successfully unlocked the bootloader using SE Bootloader Unlocking v1.6. However, upon reading the instructions for installing CWM, they mention different starting build version as a requirement for installation, so now I'm uncertain what to do and don't want to guess, knowing the possibility of bricking.
Should I:
1. Proceed to install CWM without concern of the difference in my current build?
2. Relock the bootloader, upgrade to 4.0.4 ICS using Sony's software on my laptop (I'm assuming that's an option) and then proceed?
2B. If I go this route, what is the proper method to relock the bootloader? I've seen instructions to flash with the .ftf file in Xperia_Relock_Bootloader.zip but I'd like some reassurance here since I've read posts where people have bricked their phones attempting a bootloader relock.
Do not need to Relock the bootloader if you just hava to flash the .tft

hi! almost every kernel has cwm/twrp recovery installed so you just have to flash kernel that is compatible with your rom and you will have it
This thread was moved from the development section to this one, please remember, all the questions belongs to they own section and not development.
Thanks
Gabo
You just have to install any custom kernel for gingerbread, I guess all kernels in dev forum have cwm preinstalled

hello everyone
i bought an unlocked ls990 g3 phone, it seems that it was originally locked
however the software version installed is ZV4 stock
the phone is unrooted but did not received any firmware updates through OTA
my questions are:
1- why i did not receive the official firmware update ?
2- if i update the firmware to zv6 then zv8 manually, will it lock the phone again?
3- if yes, which custom firmware is the best in terms of similarities as the stock firmware ?
i will appreciate if someone could help me
thanks a lot
When I upgraded from a rooted 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 i followed this recipe: forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155
Now I'm at 4.4.4 (23.0.1.A.0.167) and rooted and I want to update to 5.0.2. Is it possible to follow the proceedure I followed last time in the link above, or do I have to downgrade to 4.4.2 somehow and then upgrade to 5.0.2?
Any helpful answers appreaciated

Hi, sorry for my bad english, I'm from Mexico
Yes, you can do it (I made myself with the 23.1.A.0.726 Lollipop, the HK and US) and is working really fine
Just 2 thing in mind:
1.- You need root and working recovery (in your last rom, for example 4.4.4)
2.- The correct files to make the preroot: the supersu, the ftf and the dual recovery(this works with lollipop http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606)
Hi,
I have a rooted SGP521 (4G) purchased in Australia. It is unlocked and rooted 4.4.2 (17.1.1.A.0.402).
1. Do I need to flash dual boot recovery BEFORE upgrading?
2. To upgrade to LP do I need to flash 690 first and then 726?
3. If need to flash 690 first, which pre-rooted file is most suited?

Thanks a bunch!
1. yes
2. no (you flash the whole firmware over the currently existing one)
3. I'm not familiar with SGP521
I have an s5 that came with 5.1.1 completely stock, unrooted with baseband: G900TUVU1FOF6. I have never downgraded an s5 before. I've only done it to nexus devices. Does anyone have any instructions on how I should downgrade it? I was thinking of using the 5.1.1 rooting procedure that involves flashing a kernel with kies then maybe it would be possible to flash a custom 5.0 rom with recovery. I'm not sure that is a good idea though because I wasn't sure if the bootloader, CSC, or PDA firmware would still be stuck at the 5.1.1 version.
Edit:
I found this video which seems to say you don't need to root. I'll try the video's method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nek0lowlMmM
