... and the generally known Distros on the raspberrypi.org mainpage (for sure)
Windows IoT
recommendations and suggestions are welcome.
this list is partly based on this one (you can find several more detailed descriptions there) but most time I need to search the web for hours while I'm trying to get the most complete list for us . This is the largest list out there !!

useful additions/tools:
SD Card Formatter; to correctly format the sdcard including all partitions that windows doesn't recognize
Win32DiskImager; to write all the images you can download from the links above to your sdcard using windows (also works on 64bit)
BerryBoot; Multi-OS solution ( XDA Discussion Thread )
PuTTY; connect to your pi from windows via SSH
Moonlight; game streaming with Moonlight and GeForce Experience ( XDA Thread )
... tbc

some things to look forward to:
FirefoxOS; you can try this
Chromium OS
CentOS
Mesa and DRM driver for Broadcom VC4 hardware; used in the Raspberry Pi hardware (including Raspberry Pi 2)
... tbc
Stop! don't leave yet
you may contribute to this thread by leaving a feedback about linked distros or tools you've tried
something about usage (ease of use, performance etc.), stability, special features and so on...
try to be (a bit) specific. not like: "...... is the best" or "...... rocks"
useful ones will be linked in op
don't discuss single distributions or ask about them in here. for questions use this. and for discussions open a new thread if it isn't done yet
but you can discuss about the single feedbacks or the list itself. and give me suggestions if there's something i missed for sure
or simply push thanks , thanks

[ISO] xPerfect virtual appliance - Android SDK r10 / NDK r5b - dev

xPerfect provides a full Android development environment in the form of a virtual machine and is free for anyone to download and use as required for building and developing Android sources, kernels, drivers, diff patches or anything else.
Built using Virtual Box and Ubuntu 10.10 x64. Latest sources and builds for Froyo and beyond require this 64bit environment and as a result I've made available this as a virtual machine for the xda community or anyone interested in Android development to use as they wish
This is a work in progress and is in initial release 0.1. I'm uploading this as a public torrent due to the size being 8.6GB - TAR.GZ - I'd like to invite everyone (with adequate bandwidth) to share your thoughts, idea's and suggestions for inclusion or addition and in any way to improve or perhaps remove!
HOT FIX UPDATE 0.01

Added myUbuntu as it is a sensational utility developed by Joseph Maillardet. myUbuntu can easily assist with tuning your installation, adding codecs, themes, fonts, and instantly providing a crisp interface better suited to programming and developers needs
INTERFACE UPDATE: http://www.perso.iut-nimes.fr/jmaillardet/myUbuntu/
About myUbuntu:
"myUbuntu is a script of post-installation with who you can record text files that describe all the modification you want to apply to a Ubuntu distribution freshly installed. After the text files written, execute the script on all target system and select between the options you have created the interesting elements for each one. Since the 10.04 release, myUbuntu have been totally re-written in ruby."

BACKGROUND:
Too much time spent messing with environments, rebuilding this and that, time and again..
It became clear a virtual machine for compiling Android sources and building applications
might be useful for anyone with the same motivations and interests. Unable to find a live-cd
or 'kitchen' for cooking roms, I decided to build my own and release it to share with other
developers and hope to find comments and suggestions for future improvments and to serve as
a way to find the perfect development environment, ready to work with and save time that is
better used creating methods, cutting code and flaming in forums (joke Mr Clown.. chill!
INSTRUCTIONS:
Download and install Virtual Box, extract the package to a folder and import as desired.
Due to the size of the disc image this is the essential files and environment only. Many of
the 'add-ons' such as AVD devices, samples and other files have been excluded to maintain as
small download size as possible. Easily add the required files back in by directly downloading
or using the aptitude package manager: apt-get
1: Start Virtualbox
2: Inside the Virtualbox Menu click: File > Import Appliance (Ctrl+I)
3: Click the “Choose” button.
4: Locate and select the OVF file from where you extracted the files.
5: Click Open.
6: Verify your xPerfect settings are correct.
7: Make any changes to the device such as memory etc..
8: Verify the disk size.
9: Click Import
Disc space has been restricted to minimum for downloading. To increase disc size you can use
the following command within Linux after importing the virtual appliance.
cd ~/.VirtualBox/HardDisks
VBoxManage clonehd xPerfect.vdi yourName.vdi
For Windows users running Virtual Box the same syntax would be done with the MS-DOS command
Start > Run > type CMD (enter)
cd c:\program files\
In the format or application syntax of;
<application> <command> <source> <target>
Sun VirtualBox Command Line Management Interface
(C) 2005-2010 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
All rights reserved.
Usage:
VBoxManage clonehd <uuid>|<filename> <outputfile>
[--format VDI|VMDK|VHD|RAW|<other>]
[--variant Standard,Fixed,Split2G,Stream,ESX]
[--type normal|writethrough|immutable]
[--remember] [--existing]
This command duplicates the appliance and creates a new UUID for the appliance, removing a
issue with id duplication and virtual drives sharing the same properties, already registered in Virtual Box.
When creating the new Virtual machine / appliance, allocate any desired disc space such as
40GB - 60GB or any number you feel comfortable with, just ensure you have enough disc space!
VBox 4.0+ supports resizing of VDIs.
This appliance was made with Virtual Box 3.1.6
VMWARE:
Anyone running VMware should download the VMware Open Virtualization Format (OVF) Tool.
http://www.vmware.com/downloads/download.do?downloadGroup=OVF-TOOL-1-0
WHY VIRTUAL BOX?
VirtualBox is a powerful x86 / AMD64 / Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise and

Froyo+ requires a 64bit environment for build. 32bit is not supported when building Android sources past 2.1 so although it is possible, it's not directly supported or possible without modifying lot's of lib's etc.. so it will be 64bit only as per the requirements for building AOSP Sources beyond Éclair.
If anyone has created or worked on fixing make to work with 32bit PM me and we can include this if you wish!

easy solution, if your cpu supports 64bit (which is hard to imagine that anyone would still be running a machine that does not support 64bit), set up a dual boot. normal 32bit OS on one end, this on the other.

99.9% of the CPU's of today have 64bit support, but lets not forget,to use 64bit you need at least 1.5Gb of RAM (Recommended 2+ or even 3+),
And maybe 45% of today's computers have 1.5+ Gb of RAM.
Most of us here have 4Gb+ thats for sure but there are people who dont so,thats gonna be a bit complicated.

if i remember correctly VirtualBox/VMware support 64bit OS even if host OS is 32bit.. just that the processor should have 64bit support...
yup virtualbox supports it: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Changelog
for those who are not sure if they have 32-bit or 64-bit processor... atleast for windows there is a great tool: CPU-Z... just check for EM64T under supported 'Instructions'
i`m sure this is my fault but...WTF ist that for?!

This is an appliance and requires a Virtualization provider. If you already have VMware installed to a 64bit edition of Linux then, no you don't need this but you can have it if you like all the same.
Open a Linux terminal and issue this command to see if your kernel is 64bit first;
Code:
uname -a
This will return either i386 or i686. The 386 flag is 32bit, next check the CPU.
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
Here you are looking for the 'ln' flags which support 64bit. That taken care of in *nix the next step is to install VirtualBox - latest 4.04 version or upgrade.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.0

Thanks for the pickup Doom - good thing about VirtualBox is even if your host O/S is 32bit - you can run 64bit appliances like this..
PLEASE SEED! Nobody is going to get anything with 20 people just hit and run and leave 1 peers.
Not threatening or anything but guy's if you can't seed at least 100% of what you download, I'm pulling the torrent as I have other things to do with my hardware and network than share it with snatch and grab bandits.

Introduction and Warning:
Asteroid OS is a Free Open Source alternative operating system for smartwatches. It utilizes libhybris to ensure maximum compatibility with the watch. The OS team is currently looking for active contributors to make it grow (more info at the project's webpage: http://asteroidos.org/). The OS is NOT based on Android wear and is currently in an Alpha Phase, has limited functions, applications and customizability so flash at your own risk. The current build is mostly meant for developers rather than end-users, so these images in no way reflect the finished Asteroid OS. I take no responsibility for what happens by the use of this software. By using the method bellow you don't flash Asteroid but rather run it side by side with Android wear. Essentially you place the OS file inside the watch and fastboot into it. This way Android Wear stays installed and you can test Asteroid. Asteroid at its current phase is not meant as a daily OS as it has bugs and issues, one of them being that the bluetooth doesn't work (so you can't pair it with your phone). I simply made a build of the OS, credit goes to the creator and the contributors, I can only provide you with builds, installation instructions and answers on a few questions, nothing more.

Outdated Personal Build of mine (lacks newer build features):
Asteroid Image
Boot Image
Instructions:
1. Make sure you have an ADB installation (Minimal adb and fastboot should do) and your watches' bootloader is unlocked and debugging is enabled from the settings.
2. Download the two files in the download section and place them in the same folder and connect the watch to the computer
3. Open up the command prompt (cmd) and navigate to that folder
4. Issue these commands:
adb push asteroid-image-dory.ext2 /sdcard/linux/rootfs.ext2
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot zImage-dtb-dory.fastboot
5. The watch will reboot into Asteroid OS. Every time you want to boot into asteroid you have to issue the last two commands or else you will boot into android wear normally.
Removal Instructions:
Just open up cmd, connect the watch to the computer and issue this command: adb shell rm "/sdcard/linux/rootfs.ext2"

Any screenshots or demo videos? Can't find any on Google or the official project site.
Sent from my SM-G900P using XDA Free mobile app
Screenshots, video etc can be found in the Twitter account ( @ asteroidos).
Images?
According to twitter, don't bother trying these images as it takes over three minutes to boot and there are no apps.
I uploaded a video showing Asteroid booting up for anyone interested.
Why would I destroy my perfectly fine watch with absolutely pointless OS, which does nothing, doesn't allow me to get notifications and has no apps?
Why such negativity over something that is pre-alpha? The OP even said, this is more for developers than for end users.
Once a few iterations are out, say when the BT stack is up, and some apps available I'd be keen on checking it out and dual-booting into it. For now, I'll be keeping a watch on it.
Keep fighting the hard fight @CedArctic!
This is definitely great to see. A fully capable linux OS on the watch. Btw OP, does it use Wayland or Mir for the display server since it's built on QT (going off what I know of Ubuntu Touch which uses QT/Mir)?
I downloaded the image but haven't messed with it just yet, the rootfs is on my watch waiting for me to boot it with fastboot. I'm excited to see how this turns out. Any idea on how it will communicate with the mobile device through Bluetooth yet, or is that still in the planning stages as you work on the UI?

Thanks but it's more of kido's fight. He is the original developer of Asteroid OS. I will continue to provide up to date builds until a stable release is out. It is great to see the community interested in such a project

I believe it uses the Mir server. As far as I know the watch will connect via bluetooth. Though I am not the developer of this operating system, that's kido. So don't really know much . For now I just make builds of it.

Ah thanks for the information. I'm really looking forward to seeing this grow, I love watching alternative operating systems for my devices ^_^
Once it has more work done on it, I could see it becoming a pretty neat project.

This isn't a version of Android. It is a Linux based operating system that can run on the G Watch as a (in the future) replacement OS for android. So no, playstore does not work.

I've been on Genymotion since 6 years ago and completely disagree. It is a terrible service that CHARGES you to have to do everything you can do for free if you build your own emulator or even use nox or bluestacks and ROOT them and debug THEIR LAUNCHER to CLEAN Them.
I created scripts when GENYMOTION first came out to help get the play store installed and remove bad apps, etc.
They are Greedy as are Most these Emulator Makers

Perhaps they changed it, it was originally free, then they started incorporating stupid pay walls, like charging you to change the IMEI, and eventually getting rid of their "free" personal use option after folks like me showed how to do this for free.
I guess the free option is back but the company as a whole left a sour taste in my mouth, when you can make anything they can with knowledge on gapps and android firmware, or different operating systems to use our apps entirely, like Lineage and Ubuntu-Touch
So what took me several days to figure out on windows, took me an hour to figure out on linux... And behold, Anbox is installed, in a virtual machine running Lubuntu... tee hee! Lemme do some testings... things.. yeah

Google Drive links have been added for all machines. The Mega Mirrors are uploading now. . .

For future reference if you haven't already figured it out yet, your processor and your hypervisor both need to support Nested VT-x (Nested Virtualization) for WSA to execute in a VM. This is because both Windows Subsystem for Linux and Windows Subsystem for Android use the Hyper-V hypervisor to accomplish booting their respective Linux kernels and userspace up. They no longer use the syscall translation driver, which would've worked under a VM.
Btw, what did you find the most troublesome about the installation of WSA? I found it was remarkably straightforward to install even from APPX (or in my case since I'm using a modified WSA with Google Services, an unpacked APPX).

Oooohhhh Thank You~! I will research this further within the VM.
Honestly I didn't find anything difficult, other than finding out from start to finish how to do everything I wanted to do. So it's just amazing to have the Internet, Forums, Nerds that Make Websites, stuff like that to help make, idk, a guide or instructions? to make things easier.
Also really grateful for the software engineers that continue to implement such innovations, even though I jest by calling it "suboptimal" I'm sorry but ""WSA""~~~ wINDoehz.. ya set yourselves up for that one ;-)

I tried building a box based off what I remembered in the 90's that was capable of playing all the games we weren't supposed to be playing at school.. haha.. I just now remembered that we actually used Old Macs at school, Not Windows, (i had a windows machine at home) so I am trying to build an old mac box.. cause I want to play that dang wolfenstein game we would always get busted trying to install off the mario cd xD
If anyone else OLD has any Idea... There is an old windows game from the 90s my siblings and I would play, that was basically like a "story maker" or a video recording game, that came with many assets, like meowing cats, and you could use your microphone and just make the most obnoxious stories ever...
I cannot for the life of me find this game or remember the name, if anyone has any ideas...
I had thought it was a sierra game but I cannot find it in their listings online.

like running WSA-with-magisk-GApps-pico_2204.40000.20.0_x64_Release-Nightly on my PC. Android 12.1 on WSA on Win11. I included images of games & stuff

LineageOS 19.1 for SM-T580 (gtaxlwifi) is running only on my tablet, sorry for the confusion , the below software is also based on Android 12.1. I edited my heading since I wrote I like the Samsung rom about my tablet , which is not related to what I found below, I don't know what if any kernel it using, the message I got back maybe confusion the XDA staff that moved it to the windows subform which I didn't know at the time existed here. Again the above info about my tablet and the below topic is more about how I found Android 12 now can be run on windows 11.Magisk on WSA (with Google Apps) on windows 11, I been able to play with and make an X64 for my computer, not sure I don't think we can use the arm64 port under windows 11, but in any case the X64 for the most part is able besides running offically kindle appstore and kindle app under windows 11 now, and offically microsoft has release it as that, this below is unoffical since its not supported, also it can run google playstore and play books but its not completely stable for me, it can run it fine then the next minute its crashing its windows on my gigabyte desktop, I haven't tried them on my laptop yet, it maybe more stable on my nvidia laptop or my intel based laptop, not sure since they do crash on my desktop at times they run fine, but again its really new, microsoft just put Kindle playstore, with Windows Subsystem for android in microsoft store, the kindle playstore from microsoft store also crashes just like the unoffical version, I don't think its out of beta software state, yet, but wanted to share it here, if in any case , anyway one who releases stuff like LineageOS for my tablet , wants to take a look at this project below, I just forked it at my github, the offical links to there project are below too, I am just sharing it here, in hopes that the more people know about it the better the project will get, also its better than running an android emulator on windows 11, or at least it would be if it didn't crash on my gigabyte desktop, with my nvidia rtx 2080 3D card. under windows subsystem you can select which 3D card it runs on, I haven't tried playing much games on the project below but I beat while its running stable the 3D games will play better, I have also tried blue stacks on windows before, but I do prefer the projects idea below more. under my builds below I included the keep Kindle Appstore, but if anyone wants that can be removed too, same for Magisk you can build it without that too in it if you want. on the github website. since microsoft removed the ebooks feature, I think the idea of using either play books under windows 11 or other ebook android based e readers is a great idea, but at times I do miss the build of edge that was able to open epub files. you can also set the windows subsystem for android when using the play books app on windows 11 to use the text to speech from android you can play aloud the ebooks with androids voices like in english US or english UK if you prefer, that's another nice thing that works with the below project.Website for its project below,

github.com
maximalEbooks/MagiskOnWSA
Integrate Magisk root and Google Apps (OpenGApps) into WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android) - maximalEbooks/MagiskOnWSA
github.com
so when I log out of my github.com account, then the files are not downloadable, I don't know if it was that way before or if something at that site changed, in any case, you can fork the project on your own github account and create the files if you don't have access to them. I was able to download the x64 build and use it just fine, but there maybe sharing rules at github that I am not aware if since I am a new user using it.

Below is a message I got when posting here, just reply back to that's questions here too if anyone else was wondering.
I have a few questions for you.
First, is this Windows software, such as for a virtual machine?
Second, where is your kernel source?
Your timely response is appreciated.
XDA Staff
They ask me these questions , I as A college student try to answer it as best I found, windows based software, it's like a virtuàl machine , I think it's sort of more native app but I am not sure runs on windows 11 and works to bring Android 12.1 to windows 11 in Microsoft store you can only run Kindle app and Kindle app store but as above project is for allows more real Android software to work, that's the point of it, since it runs on top of windows , I don't know if there's any kernel source . I don't think it has a kernel but I could be wrong, anyway I wanted to post a direct reply here to if any other home users had questions, I hope I explain it better, I am running it for ebook reads Android based for my own personal desktop and for the Android games that can be played on windows, but I also use custom stuff from here on my Samsung Galaxy tab but I just wanted to share what I found with others if they didn't know about that project which I think is really cool that someone created that for windows 11. From my understanding of the windows subsystem for Android is I read somewhere online that it using an Android 12.1 version , the above project says something to that from what I remember seeing somewhere about it.
some shared screen captures of stuff you can do on windows 11 with android. one shows two games I install, and a few ebook readers, was able to install marvels android app, not the login has a bug, otherwise you can get other comic views on android in play store, that will work just as well, I don't know if the marvel app works correctly on a real android tablet or not, not sure which app I was using for viewing them before, but on windows I was unable to get that to log in. maybe has to do with the software still beta to run android since it has sometimes crash on my desktop, otherwise all these apps seem to work more or less. comic & manga by Comixology is the working app, that other one listed as marvel doesn't log in but the one in the first image here does. and the comics download and are viewer it seems. so you can either view them on your tablet or your pc
