As some of you may have seen, I've found a root method that seems to work and be stable. I just unrooted, tried it again and failed once, tried it immediately after and it was successful. I think I may have found out the glitch why it's not working for some of you. During the root process, you absolutely can NOT let the screen go blank, timeout, or change. Mine has failed every time doing that, when I keep it on and uninterrupted, I've had success with it in about a minute.
Secondly, I know a lot of you want to make custom roms and complain about the bootloader being locked. That's true, but mine is unlocked, even though I did trip the Knox warranty counter. From the testing I've done so far, I've made a backup from the Online Nandroid backup app. I have learned that it is impossible to restart the phone in recovery in any way, shape or form without triggering the *Unauthorized software found, return to AT&T* error message. However, what I've been doing there to get my phone back is going into download mode, using Odin 3.07 and flashing the bootloader from the stock NE7 firmware. That can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/9...711751_REV01_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 None of my stuff is lost, phone will reboot normally, everything looks good.
Now, as far as custom roms are concerned, since I have no idea about how to do that, I do have a custom recovery image saved through the other thing, but I don't know how to restore it through Odin. I do get kernel fail message if I try to enter recovery mode still, generally, all I have to do is power off and restart, it should work fine. If not, I load the bootloader image.
Having said that, it has me thinking. Since I'm basically using a custom rom already, I uninstalled the bundled bloatware and I *think* that's why I'm getting the error when I try, it may be possible to build around all of that and simply reflash the bootloader. I admit at this point, I'm in totally uncharted territory for myself and I'm not really even sure what trying to do a factory restore might do, but I do know I can recover using the stock firmware and then hopefully getting root access back to reload everything from Titanium Backup.
Until I get some sleep and enough nerve plus free time to try the factory restore to see if that is causing the issue, it's all theoretical. The point I'm getting at, and wanting to ask since I don't really know how it works, is if I can take the total stock rom as it is, root it without removing anything, and get it to boot into recovery from the phone or even through Odin, would that help the developers out there be able to come up with a workaround solution for this? I know I'm onto something, but I don't have the experience to proceed.
Since this phone has been dead and most of you have relegated it to a drawer or something, if you still have it, I'm guessing the Knox warranty 0x1 won't really mean a whole lot, so testing can be done. I'm trying my best with the total lack of knowledge I have and looking through different forums, but as I said, its beyond my experience level. I've cracked open the door folks, I can tell you absolutely, even if it does go into a bootloop or AT&T error, that bootloader will work without any loss except for the time it takes to get it done. I'm a bit brain fried right now, so if anyone has any suggestions, ideas, or whatever please comment. I believe this can be done, it was only a short time ago everyone said Root would never be on here, and now here it is. I also read in the Note 4 threads that once root access is gained, custom roms and things aren't going to be far behind.
Maybe there is a way to integrate that stock bootloader into a custom image without having to go around like I'm doing. I don't know programming very well. I'm sure that some of you folks with more experience and better minds than mine can come up with something based on my initial findings.
just used this on my i527 running i527UCUBNJ1.
ran root check and all good..tested romtool box, backed up some app s,all good..over clocked cpu no problem..awsome wrk.
now for kernels and roms..

Nice detailed post. Thank you.
I wish I had I527 to help out. (I have 527M and R960). I do care about Knox on my 527M but I don't care much about R960 as it's already Knoxed-out. So I might be able to help, but I ask all members who have I527 to chip in.
I have opened 527M and hardware-wise it's same as 527 (it even says 527 on my 527M board), so theoretically it should be same. But as I said in thee other thread, even KingRoot.apk fails to root it!!! ???
I didn't do anything to it. I unrooted last night and had it fail, but it worked again after.

If anyone is interested, I successfully completed root process again with the kingo root app which allowed me to install and update SuperSU. Not sure if it will work for everyone, but it will work if you've already gained root access and want to change super user programs and had trouble previously.

Does anyone know how KingRoot achieves rooting? I want to know the actual mechanism of it.
Yes, kingroot. No idea how it works.

Good News and Bad News
I just tried to a factory reset without deleting my SDcard data. The bad news is, it went to the unauthorized error screen again. Good news is, the bootloader flash worked and I still haven't lost anything. Even if/when I unroot, it still says custom. Perhaps if I enable Knox before unrooting, I can restore the official version.

I'm thinking more AT&T than Samsung. There are so many of their apps embedded in the OS as well. Not sure which direction to take, I've frozen a few of them too.
You guys in the south should stop buying phones from AT&T. I'm sure you know they have been fined for millions of dollars to FCA for misleading advertisement (read = cheating).
Good News and Bad News
It is possible to go back to the stock image of NE7. I did it, I'm waiting on the update to NJ1 now. I was unable to do a straight factory reset from the phone, I got the same error, I even tried it again through Odin and it left everything as I had it. I unrooted, did everything I could then used all the firmware from the stock image to reload. I haven't been able to test the backups I made, they keep crashing in Odin. When I get updated and hopefully regain root access, I'll try to use the images I made to restore. If not, I still have everything backed up from Titanium. I don't know if this will work yet. I also don't know why Knox has been tripped on others devices. I didn't have a problem with restarting or anything until I tried a custom recovery. I guess that's just the nature of the beast. I'm planning on trying to make a totally stock image with root backup once I get this finished, if possible.
NE7 is Android 4.4.2 and NJ1 is ???
It's the latest update of 4.4.2.

I have root, the first time it froze and didn't sent a test correctly. So I tried it again using Super one. Now I have superuser. Tried both apps on the market and neither one seem to have worked thus yet.
When I try Herolz Galaxy s unlock It is unable to copy EFS, All it says is Done, Error, Not saved. And yes there is an SD card present.
The GS2 unlocker also available on the market will fart around for over 5 minutes and say unlock code not found.

Than ks in advance
you know you'll only get Edge on Tmo bands.
KH7 is stock, but you stated you have root. Did you do it? if not then check the android Development forums on how to get back to stock. and start the root proccess again.
I got the root through superoneclick. It seemed it did ok as the secong time I went through it said it was already rooted. as for the crappy internet it won't really matter here as we don't even have 3g here in this town for t-mobile anyhow.
if I un-root and re flash back to stock just using the button press combo work? Any why does it only get edge on tmobile?

Unroot and back to stock would require Odin/Heimdall.
Only gets Edge on Tmo because its an at&t phone. different bands for 3g.
I have used Super One Click in the past, but its just easier to flash a rooted kernal in Odin/Heimdall, then flash a custom ROM via CWM.
Back to stock is mainly because SuperOneClick is an old tool. and then starting fresh with the latest.
But I had no need to unlock my phone, but from what I've heard its very simple, and most dont have any issues. using the app from the market
I am not afraid of ODIN. I have done that in the past but I did have a huge problem with the GS1 installing an older kernel. I just about bricked the phone. I had to use the HEimdall or what ever it was to get back in it.
On these phone with a custom kernal and rom will it automatically unlock the phone? I am just afraid of using the wrong one and in this particualr section I am sure as to where to go. It doesn't give a whole lot of detail and with the cryogen mod thing it is getting places where I am not sure if I want to really try that. I would but the information is spaced out so much I am afraid of missing something and buggering everything up. What should I have to worry about when doing this?
Also it is the software unlocking I am having problems with.

Custom kernal will not unlock the phone to be used on a network other than at&t.
Software unlock? assuming you mean using s/w to unlock the device, yes thats the way i understood this thread. I cant really tell ya much about that, but i have heard that its easy and works fine, which is why you should go back to stock first, to get rid of anything messy leftover from using an old rooting method.

Hey guys. Sorry if this has been answered before. I've looked and didn't see it in here so I figured I'd ask. I really don't want to set my phone into "custom" status in case I drop it or break it somehow Anyway, my question is will installing TWRP recovery from GooManager get me a "custom" status? Also, if I install a custom ROM, is there anyway to "trick" it into saying "Official" when I have ROMs and TWRP installed? I really wanted to install ROMs, but I'm too afraid of dropping it or something while the ROM is installed. Thanks!
I believe the "Custom" shows up periodically if you have a custom ROM installed. But really, it shouldn't bother people so much. It's pretty easy to tell if a custom ROM is installed without rebooting the phone. If Verizon cared that much, they could find out. FWIW, I didn't see "Custom" with the open padlock at boot when running stock rooted (aside from during the root process using the pre-release kernel.) It was only after installing a custom ROM that I see it periodically now.

If you were to physically damage it, you would likely still be able to boot to download mode and Odin back to 100% stock. In that case you'd have what you are asking for. I don't believe there is a way to spoof the phone into thinking it's fully official. Like I said, if Verizon/Asurion/etc care enough, they should be able to find out unless you flash back to pre-root stock. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry to ask a million questions, but I used to have my GS4 on the stock ROM but rooted but with TWRP recovery. The statuses everywhere read as Samsung Official. I mean even in ODIN mode too. Is that what they check for in the warranty process? Or can they detect if it was just rooted or have a custom recovery and deny a warranty claim? Thanks for your patience with me.

Happy to help...but I really don't know what Verizon or the insurance provider would check. Some individuals within those places will probably check more thoroughly than others. But I've heard several stories of people taking their phone to Verizon, the tech seeing that it's rooted/fully custom, and replacing it anyway.
If you ever need to take it in for a warranty claim (hardware issue) I'd go back to stock first, but that's my personal opinion.
Edit: Even if it's just stock w/ root, a decently savvy tech could tell just by looking into your app list and seeing "SuperSU" or "SuperUser" or any other root-required apps.

So, I have the i545, it was updated to the newest firmware when I got it. Lucky!
I first tried all the old stuff like the noob I am. Bricked it a couple times, blah blah, fixed it.
I tried the newer stuff, and was successful in getting into the recovery, but all I can do is wipe personal data and cache, its not CWM. When I do, it gets locked into download odin section and says its broken essentially.
Any bootloader bricks it, and any attempt to do the newer stuff like Loki has bricked it. I have the original Rom saved, so I just have to push it through odin each time.
I want Hyperdrive rom, I am rooted, and I can't get the common "working" ways to work. What am I doing wrong? I just tried the loki method and it locked into odin download when it restarted.
I'm not frustrated at anyone here by any means, I know the big companies are jerks, and....I need help side stepping them...
Any suggestions?

If there is a way through odin or something to push Hyperdrive, I dont need the CWM. Im just a simple custom rom user, nothing crazy. And if there is no way to go from the ME7 update, be it downgrade and then root and flash, be it odin, be in CWM or Loki method, etc., where do I go to add to the bounty?

Ugh, I could explain everything in detail and not joke around, but then I'd just be a jerk. I've rooted, installed bootloaders, roms, etc., on many phones, not just mine. I know what I'm doing so generally I don't have to research how to do it. I upgraded from a galaxy S3 with MOAR (rom) installed, also did paranoid rom right before, jumped in and hoped that the S4 would play nice. It didn't. And you won't find a post from me asking how to unbrick it. The original Rom was backed up, so nothing to fear. I understand that bricking a phone is part of the risk, and unbricking it is part of the knowledge one needs to jump in comfortably. I did it 8 times yesterday. I tried 5 methods, one I tried a couple times because I could get into the bootloader but it would freeze on removing the cache. After each different combo, it killed it. Once I felt defeated for the day I came here. Believe me, Im not the person who turns on their phone and posts for help about what to do after its on. ^_^

Thats the only way I learn. : ) Following the 50 million different articles and blogs and tutorials is the only way I ever find anything. Rarely do I get a piece of equipment that just works the first time with the common used method for it. That's never my luck. There's always something stupid that stops it. This is the same with everything in truth, cars, computers, phones, etc. Nothing has ever just worked for me. So, now I just throw things at it until something goes through. People say there's no way, well...if that's the case then all the DEV's should stop trying. lol. There is a way, we just have to find it.
Well, every phone is different and just jumping in on a new phone without knowing the issues and pitfalls because you rooted other phones being naive imo. I've rooted maybe a half dozen phones and countless roms but when i got my S4 i still waited a few days and just read. The point is no matter how many times you do something whenever you get something new/updated, be a phone or anything else, you should always take the time to read and read.
Edit:
Also because of these locked down bootloaders (like the sammy knox) i would if i were you do A LOT of reading before buying new phones in the future to make sure you CAN root and slap a custom recovery on it. The root and custom recoveries may be a thing of the past pretty soon and we'll be purchasing Developers and Google Play editions if we want custom stuff.
So I rooted my Note 2 and installed rom manager to so I could install a zip File and the phone rebooted and I got this massage:
System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone.
Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help
Volume up/home/power just boots to this message every time. So does Volume down/home/power.
It will not boot into Download mode or odin mode.
Please help.
Thank you.
Sounds like you tried to use ROM Manager to install CWM, an alternate recovery before unlocking your bootloader.
What version of software did you have - 4.1.2 or 4.3?
---------- Post added at 03:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:35 PM ----------
By the by, your phone IS recoverable, but the surefire method (Verizon Software Update) will also force you to upgrade to 4.3 and you will be locked into the new, secure bootloader. No exploit to unlock this bootloader has been found, so no custom ROMs can be installed once you have 4.3.
If you already had the official 4.3 OTA, you're locked already and it won't change anything to use Verizon's software to restore your phone.... though you undoubtedly tripped the KNOX counter trying to flash a custom recovery in that case.
I was able to get in to odin mode but it gets allmost done and it fails its saying unsupported version
I am running ota 4.3

As far as I know there is only one method top root that works on 4.3 right now but it doesn't unlock the boot loader

I've accidentally done what OP did too, having been unaware of the changes to prevent custom recoveries.
I've tried using Odin to flash back to stock 4.1.1 but apparently that didn't work, and I guess the custom recovery is still triggering the error.
Is there a way to reset the recovery to stock now or at least bypass Verizon's system check?
I have had this happen as well. Is there any way to unlock this phone using any methods on here? Thanks.
Same issues, anyone have any luck on 4.4.3?

No luck on 4.4.2 -- Trouble Installing CWM/TWRP on Rooted Vz Note 2 SCH-i605 4.4.2
The title of this post summarizes my present challenge ... I have not been able to successfully install CWM or TWRP using any popular method. For example ODIN attempts fail each time, no matter what I try, e.g. swapping USB ports, reloading drivers, removing batteries, sim cards, SD card, changing cables, turning virus protection on/off, battery charge level (50 thru 100%) ... and various combinations of these approaches. ROM Mgr and other Flash apps don't get it done -- well, to be fair, they may be getting it done, but on reboot I receive an error message "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found...." blah, blah, blah. --SO, does anyone have any thoughts or approaches they might recommend? I'm really stumped. And to make it all the more vexing, I'm a novice or whatever is just before novice. I've enjoyed getting this far and have recovered from a few soft bricks along the way. The first time was worrisome, but now I don't worry so much. I've lucked out and found a lot of great guidance on forums, like this one and others. But so far, I haven't landed on the trick of getting past 'whatever roadblock(s)' are in place on this Note 2 SCH-i605 4.4.2 set-up. I'm stumped.

As far as I know if you do official OTA 4.3 and above update you bootloader is locked/secure and you cannot install a custom recovery therefore no custom roms. at least the old fashion way.
My phone does not have these issues so I haven't looked into whats out there. You may be able to still root the phone at least, and as for custom roms I would look into the safestrap options if there are any.
If one gets a note 2 like warranty replacement or for some other reason in the recent past or future check immediately when turning on if you are 4.1 or 4.3 and dont take any OTA. You may get lucky and have old software on it.
Edit: Looking around maybe this will help you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-verizon/help/finally-safestrap-recovery-v3-72-nd7-4-t2968273
I had updated to the official OTA 4.3 and the only way heard of was to send your phone into mobiletechvideos and they will downgrade your phone back to 4.1.2 I don't know the details on what they do, but it involves taking your phone apart. I sent my GN 2 in on a Wednesday and I had it back by the following Thursday. I re-rooted and I am back running cm12. I talked with Josh on the phone regarding replacing my rear housing at the same time. Nice guy, very helpful. I ordered the rear housing and sent it with the phone. They changed it out at no cost.

Im new to all this and ive also never used the site before so bear with me
I got my Galaxy for christmas 2013... With that being said, when I opened it I updated it with all the latest updates like it required. A few days later I remembered how much fun my last rooted phone was and decided to root it. I ended up rooting my galaxy s4 using a method I found which you download some chinese application to your pc, Plug in the phone, it reboots and does everything by itself. I checked and it was a successful root. Yay...Until I realized I wasnt done yet. Now my problem is that I DONT HAVE A CUSTOM RECOVERY. I CANT GET ONE BECAUSE OF THE ANDROID SOFTWARE VERSION, LATEST BUILD NUMBER AND SO ON. My root is completely useless! Im left frustrated because I cant get any great roms, and do cool root stuff simply because i need to install a custom recovery to flash any of these things.
I tried downloading one using a method i found from Galaxys4root.com or something like that for Clockworkmod recovery.. The guy said in the video to copy the two files for the custom recovery, and paste them in a folder (He navigates through es file explorer finds Data>Local>tmp at least I think... and then pastes it) my Galaxy had none of these folders nor would it let me create them! The only folder I could open was the "Data" folder. After that, there was nothing else... meaning no "Local" folder and obviously no "tmp" folder inside of the non-existing "local" folder. Therefor the terminal emulator cant find them or use them while theyre in the "download" folder of my phone. (unless you just type something different into the terminal emulater to allow it to run them but im still new to this so i dont know how to do that either. Other methods i found for installing a custom Recovery this were either the exact same thing, or for an older version that was before all the updates That I installed. keep in mind i got this phone for christmas 2013 so its running "Android 4.3" My model number is "SCH-I545" with buildnumber ending in "MK2".... ITS ALREADY ROOTED.
It seems like nobody has any other methods out with those versions and id REALLY REALLY like to take advantage of my root... If anybody knows how to help me install a custom recovery please let me know PS I HAVE VERIZON... (idk if that matters) THANKS!!!

you need to research what the heck you are doing before you jump into this game. Countless threads in these forums describing what and what can't be done to S4 concerning rooting, recoveries and roms.
1. the vroot method in NOT a recommended method, a much better one has been out there for several weeks where you dont have to deal with chinese software/malware
2. Your phone is a MK2 base and you CAN NOT LOAD any custom recoveries like CWM or TWRP The bootloader is locked down tight and the prospects of this ever being hacked is pretty slim to none becasue of the security features in place both hardware and software sides.
3. The only avenue for a custom ROM is thru safestrap and the only 4.3 base ROM compatible is Hyperdrive 12.0
so sit back and spend some time and educate yourself. At least your phone isn't a paperweight yet.
Well the last time I rooted my droid, it already had a recovery. I did a bunch of research I just should have waited.. is that rom any good? And is it possible for me to get?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Yes hyper drive is an excellent rom, however as mentioned above, since the first phones initial release there have been lock downs on the phones bootloader so be very careful on trying to apply any type of root or recovery

Awesome! Well what would you personally recommend for someone in my situation? Should I wait until someone can break through MK2 then get a recovery when it is "safer" I guess, or unroot and do it all over again later (which would stuck because I don't wanna lose all my contacts and stuff).. Ive seen other people in my position and the are probably people trying to crack at it too.. The way I see it I already have the root.. I just need a safe way to get a recovery. I cant be COMPLETELY screwed lol. Thanks for all the input by the way. It's greatly appreciated!

safestrap has a recovery built in but as mentioned, you just can't load any rom you want...if you mean wait until they find a way to unlock the bootloader so custom recoveries like CWM or TWRP could run any ROMs...I hate to tell you, it is appearing to be highly unlikely to ever happen.
I looked up Hyperdrive and I liked it. Looked like a great rom and had everything I needed! Thanks alot. Would you by chance have any links for safestrap and hyperdrive 12.0? Because I didn't however find anyone using it on MK2 nor 4.3 so it kind of worries me.. Or if you know if a video, tutorial, or any kind of material with somebody using 4.3 and MK2 flashing hyperdrive through safestrap.

Hyper drive can be found under the Verizon Android development thread... Safe strap I believe is under the themes and apps and also under the original development threads, please read carefully when installing your recovey method, other than that you should be good to go

Well I got safe strap. But while I was flashing the rom, the process stopped on a screen with a black background and whit text and I fell asleep waiting for it to finish... I woke up the next morning and my galaxy s4 has SCREEN BURN.... there's lines and text all over the screen no matter what I do with it.. So now I'm going to return it to best buy and get another one. This Sucks haha. But now i NEED to unroot it by tomorrow and i need to know how to do it since I'm still running MK2 and android 4.3... i never finished flashing the rom last night. I just pulled the battery while it was frozen and rebooted It back into stock. I appreciate everyone's help so far.

You can use SuperSu from the play store to do a full un-root. Then you should be good by the sounds of it.
