im trying to root my phone by following the above process..
i have some doubts...
1. Will I lose my OTA updates by rooting using that method?
2. Will I lose anything else or will something be broken ( if any) ..???
Rooting doesnt break anything aside OTA because it checks your system for it being correct and usualy root causes this to fail so updates via flashtool.

Following is not really a tutorial or manual to be followed without questioning. You need to know what you are doing with your phone by yourself and not follow what others say.
What is safe?
Before all, know what you are doing!!! Processes that may be safe in certain conditions may brick your phone in other circumstances. Don't just flash to get root or some custom FW like you install your market apps. Flashing can go wrong even if everything "should be safe" either because of hardware or software failures/oddities/other factors. So before you do anything with your phone study what you're about to do and what will it give as a result, has anyone had problems with similar process, if there are not safer methods, etc.
Currently one safe way to get root access is by unlocking bootloader and using recoveryNeo.img provided by Bin4ry to install RootXperia.zip. Bootloader can be safely locked after this and only this tweak.
Another safe way to get root is to unlock bootloader and flash custom kernel.
What is not safe?
Since Sony Ericsson Arc 2.3.2 update to 2.3.3 we can observe that phones do get bricked by OTA update.
OTA is very unreliable method of flashing. Via cable you can be assured that connection will not fail as easily. Also files can become corrupted via any network connection. Consider that before you decide in favor of OTA.
OTA is not meant by SE for you to keep your root access. So your using it for this purpose is an unofficial and unsupported tweak. SE may include features and settings in FW that conflict with root access.
Secondly SE seems to have made lot of changes between 2.3.2, 2.3.3 and 2.3.4. If you have unlocked your bootloader and want to root your phone there is absolutely no reason to flash 2.3.2 and then to 2.3.4. These firmwares are so different that mere OTA, which does not perform full erasing and flashing of your Nand memory, is logically not safe practice.
If you have 2.3.3 and rooted then wait till OTA becomes available in your country and then update to 2.3.4. Even this is bad suggestion, given that SE officially does not support root in any of their firmwares, so beware. If your local FW does not have OTA available then you should not get another FW that allows you. Remember, providing these updates needs to be supported by SE. If they don't provide your local FW OTA update then they don't support it in your area and are not liable to damages you may cause to your phone by misusing their services.
Consider what you need more, a working phone or root access or tweaked kernel? You can always wait and maybe later you'll have tested, working and safe methods for rooting and all else.
Good things come over time, with patience, not by rushing.
You make some really good points there.
Sent from my MT15i using XDA App
my phone notifies me about motorola sofware update. When i update it and install the package can not be extracted and a logo appears on phone`s screen like on bricked phones and i solve it by formatting data. By the way, my phone is unlocked and rooted. So the question is why i cant update my phone? Is this because of the unlock and root? If so, is there any solutions?
If you removed any stock apps from the /system/apps folder the phone wont update.
Bootloader being unlocked will botch your update. You'll have to rock the SBF in the Development forum. As for Root, I've heard people being able to update with it, but there was also some talk of it killing the ability to root (not sure how much truth there was to that) but. DO NOT try to update if you're unlocked. Just flash the SBF as I said. So you don't brick your phone.
Will flashing a different recovery in order to root risk bricking the phone if an OTA comes out? Or does doing this disable OTAs?

Flashing a recovery won't run the risk of bricking your phone providing you follow the instructions of course
If an OTA comes out and in the update it had a new recovery image it would just overwrite it. It won't disable OTAs but I would suggest delaying them and not letting them install. Normally an OTA will fail if the system image its looking for doesn't match. So I am under the impression if you remove some of the bloat any OTA would fail. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the response. I am coming from the Tbolt and in another popular Android forum there was a large warning saying never to accept an OTA while rooted because it could brick the phone. It also said it's possible for an OTA to apply itself. They said that custom ROMs disable OTAs so you don't have to worry about this.
So basically, a more simple question would be: If I follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012346 and everything works and I'm rooted on a stock ROM, do I have to worry about any harm or bricking the phone after?
So if the rooting goes successfully, I don't have to worry about anything after that?

The bigger risk with an ota was that it could flash a bootloader. The risk wasn't in the recovery itself.
As the title says, I'm currently rooted and using the original .532 firmware.
What is the simplest way of upgrading to the latest update keeping root intact?
I'm able to update via wi-fi or over the air.
I read somewhere about rootkeeper?
Please could someone advise me on how to do this without wiping data and root.
Thanks xda members.

Thanks for the link. However, is there not an alternative & quicker method?
A user claims to have updated ota without losing root only by using rootkeeper.
I donĀ“t know, but that method is quick and easy.
You must have the bootloader unlocked, do not have recovery installed, only change the build.prop with rooy explorer (you can try without changing it), keep the root with rootkeeper and update with sony update center.
You can try it with your original 532, I think.
rooted and on original software (condensed from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502185). You do not need unlocked bootloader for this.
1. OTA Rootkeeper - install and protect root
2. Perform OTA to 257
3. Enjoy
If OTA fails
1. TiBu - make full backup of your apps & necessary system apps (wifi locations, SMS, etc)
2. FlashTool - Reinstall 532 FTF
3. Root (vRoot is suspect, but go ahead if you like living dangerously, we all do)
4. OTA Rootkeeper - install and protect root
5. Perform OTA to 257
6. Restore Apps via TiBu
7. Enjoy
* Of course, if you're doing it via OTA failure method, you should make sure all your app config files are exported out and saved (Nova, LightFlow, etc)
hey dude do nothing. do not unlock bootloader or anything else. if you have root just ota thats it no need for a rootkeeper or anything else.
can it be any simple than that???

That's what I did last time but root was lost.
I may skip the update and wait for Kitkat 4.4 and root.
I noticed no difference or improvement whatsoever when I had 257.

hmmmm it worked for me tough.
It may have been put clearly somewhere else but I can't seem to locate it. Apologies if I am asking an answered question.
If I root this phone (don't intend to unlock bootloader), however:
Will OTA stop working? (because of modification)
Will doing an OTA update on rooted phone remove root?
If so, is it possible to preserve root while doing an OTA?
Will removing all traces of root be as easy as SU uninstall?
With some phones, the OTA will be broken after rooting and some it will not. This is my first Sony and I wanted to confirm if this was also the case.

Will OTA stop working? (because of modification) No, it would not stop working if you just root
Will doing an OTA update on rooted phone remove root? It may or may not. Nobody has tried it yet. But normally we dont recommend doing OTA after rooting
If so, is it possible to preserve root while doing an OTA? No way till now.
Will removing all traces of root be as easy as SU uninstall? Yes, there is an option in SU to unroot the phone.

Hello,
Thanks so much for your clear and concise responses. Previously I've never been concerned about the unrooting of a phone or access to OTA. I just got so comfortable working with Samsung that I feel a bit out of my depth at the moment with the Z2.

On my phone OTA won't work on rooted device. Firmware downloads fine but it fails verification when trying to install.

Interesting. Could it be something that varies across providers?

So, we can just click unroot in supersu, not have to flash FTF using FlashTool ? After this method of unroot can we safely do ota ?
