Ok...so I've been reading almost every post in here all day long...and I wanted to upgrade my Stock Android 4.1.2 phone to one of the cool roms on here. One rom (I can't remember which one)...said I needed MJ9 firmware...so I flashed it. Then I successfully rooted. I then tried to install a new recovery so I could flash the new shiny rom. As soon as I rebooted...got the Verizon Brick Message from hell. Ok...then I searched how to get rid of that. I found a post saying to flash back to stock MJ9 which gave me Android 4.3. Now that means I can't unlock my bootloader so I could root and install the roms...correct?
I guess my question is. Can I use ODIN to flash back to 4.1.2 and have a chance at an unlocked bootloader...or am I skrewed? I should just accept the OTA kitkat and be done with it?
I
Well if you flashed stock 4.3 you most likely locked up your boot loader and there is no known exploit to unlock that boot loader atm. I think there's still a way to root 4.3 but I'm not 100% sure how. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that.

Unfortunately, your bootloader is locked now, so trying to ODIN to 4.1.2 won't unlock it. There's not an easy way to unlock it now (search the threads and you'll see that Mobile Tech videos can downgrade for a price... and someone else reported that they used an "unbricker" method to downgrade... but others don't appear to have had as much success).
If you stay on 4.3 MJ9, you can still get root, run root apps/ Xposed, etc... And with 4.3 MJ9, you can also use Safestrap to run custom Touchwiz ROM's.
If you take the OTA to kit kat, there's not a root method currently for our Note 2's, so you'll be running pure stock.
It's totally up to you, but if you want root (at least for now), you'll want to stay with 4.3 MJ9.

Alright, I've searched high and low with no results, so here it goes. I hope I'm posting in the correct forum. My apologies if not.
I've got a rooted note 3 on pretty much stock MJ4, hardware version N900P.12. I vaguely recall when I first got this phone (about a year ago) that there was an issue with unlocking the bootloader that broke 4G. I cannot find anything on this anymore. I'd really like to try some custom ROMs. I've been holding off on the OTAs, as I don't really want to limit my options.
Questions:
1) Can I now unlock the bootloader and run custom ROMs without breaking 4g LTE?
2) If so, what is my best path for upgrading and either keeping root, or re-rooting my phone?
Thanks in advance...

If the device was sprint issued the boot loader is/was unlocked. Running custom roms will not break 4g LTE, that is part of your baseband/modem.
If you upgrade to NAB,NC5, or NH7 it won't make any difference because your device is out of warranty. I would upgrade to NC5 check out this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770729&page=3 read post #25. Enjoy !!!
I'm just your average Android enthusiast, not nearly as talented and skilled as you devs, but I know my way around my phone. I am currently rocking the Galaxy S4 SCH-I545 NC5 (Rooted with Towelroot and Safestrap 3.72 installed). I never thought highly of Samsung's user interface and have wanted to upgrade to CM forever, but as each new update comes I really, really want it, so I carelessly take the OTA. I've done this far too many times so I decided to disable the system update app so I wouldn't be bothered by the new updates that come around.
Anyway, I think it's time to upgrade to Lollipop now that it's available, but I really want to keep root access, and since you guys are the professionals, I want to know the best way to flash the new update instead of take the OTA, which, if I'm not mistaken, will let me keep root and the small possibility that I can get Cyanogen some day. Is it best for me to just go ahead and take the risk-free OTA update, or should I flash? If so, can someone guide me through the process? I'm sorry if this sounds like child's play to you but I don't want to brick my phone in any situation, so it'd be great if someone could help me with this. Thanks in advance!

Update: I followed a tutorial to update to OC1, but was not successful (Wouldn't boot). I used Odin to reflash the NC5 and now I'm back where I started. Anyone have an idea?

Edit: Tried this twice, both didn't work. I'm considering just taking the OTA and not getting root. What should I do?
if you can help add my skype maoursenpeluche ill be on there alot i need to get this fixed as fast as possible
what bootloader are you on?
Idk anything about it or how to find my boot loader
Have you gotten any help from others?
And could you describe what you were doing when you soft bricked it?
no help and i was trying to downgrade it to 4.4.2 it was on lollipop 5.0.1 i wanted to root it
If it was on stock lollipop, either it was at build OC1 or OF1, neither of which have the ability to downgrade to older OS. You should have read the forums first to check if you can downgrade before attempting to do so. If you had gotten an upgrade notification within the last month or so, or you got it secondhand, it most likely was on OF1. follow directions here after downloading firmware from here , making sure you get the OF1 software for SCH-i545. That's the limit of my knowledge. if that doesn't work, hopefully someone who knows better will come by to help.
Also, OF1 does not currently have a way to root.
The guy above me is correct. Basically you have to flash the stock image of OF1 and then your phone should be good. Lesson learned? Lol. Always follow exact instructions to avoid soft bricking

have you managed to unbrick?
Hello guys, I'm really just trying my luck on finding someone who can help me with this (or at least direct me to a thread or something..)
I've got a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 which is currently working with any network except for a couple of things I want addressed:
*I wanna downgrade back to JellyBean bexause there's an app that I need to be working (yes, it's more important to me than getting the latest android features)
*I wanna keep the phone *carrier-unlocked* (I was told that the phone is factory unlocked, and given that the phone has Sprint branding..it always goes on roaming mode just for it to work where I am (Phillipines), and I wanna fix that.)
So, with that being said, I just need help on where to start and what order should I be following to achieve these.. I'll be okay with stock Android JB but I want to use a custom rom as much as possible..
P.S. - I've tried reading the forums, and have been reading the forums.. it's just that I cannot seem to find something that would give me the result I want..
Any help would be much appreciated.. Thanks in advance for those who care to help..

Once your device was upgraded past MJ4 (jellybean) to NAB ( first kitkat based rom ) Knox was installed and as the device was upgraded past KK to OC2 lollipop Knox security follows making it impossible to go back to jellybean.

regarding this process, say I have Lollipop installed, and don't care about tripping knox. Does it still make in impossible to go back to JB?
thanks for the response

Yes it is still impossible to downgrade. When the device is upgraded to kitkat and beyond several changes are made to the bootloader/modem. If you try to downgrade the bootloader/modem to MJ4 you will brick the device.
By tripping Knox all you are really doing is breaking the knox security system ( meaning Knox containerization of data is no longer possible ). What you might be able to do is root your device with a OK2 lollipop with a custom recovery. Then make a BACKUP of your rooted OS ( click on rom flashing basics in my signature for more info). Now you could try to find a jellybean based rom/OS and see if the device will boot up. The worst that can happen is you will soft brick the device ( it boot loops on start up ). To solve this just pull the battery and replace then boot into recovery and flash your backup and then try a different one.
