Repair options please - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dropped my Tablet Z while it was plugged in (USB) and pulled the cord. The connector was tweaked and it no longer charges. I had to bend the black tongue inside the USB to even get the cable in, but it did something internally.
I see the part for sale on thEbay but am concerned about removing the back glass. Is it hard, and how about getting it back on?
Sony wants like $135 plus parts, is it with it? The tablet is 2 years old and otherwise perfect, it works fine.
I realize I could go to a charge dock but I prefer the USB.
Thanks for any help.

For peace of mind, I would go with Sony repairing the tablet. Sony has the proper tools, materials, and knowledge to make a successful repair and I believe Sony will warranty the repair. $135 is not a lot of money considering what has to be done and the parts cost for the USB port should be low; e.g., Parts4Repair.com lists the USB port at $2.50 and its flex cable at $5.90.

i would repair it in sony... Yes Tablet z is old, but tablet z2 is 300-400€ , so that 135 isnt so bad....
Charge dock is expensive.. I bought SGPDS5 and it cost in ebay 95€ (new) . Im glad that i bought it, like it very much,
but i pay tablet (pollux windy) (used) 200€ + dock 95€ so its all most tablet z2 price.. but.. tablet z2 dont have this dock
and i like more tablet z ... one thing is missing, i would like 3G-LTE in this tab.....

I would watch disassemble videos first, and if you feel you can do it, replace the connector yourself. If not, then apple to service center.

Thread for hardware mods
POSTING INTERNAL tf101 pictures
like 3g dongle ? internal sd cards? ssd?
removing the battery for 2 HDD 500go?
finding sd cards hubs? usb to sata cables?
? there is a place in the tablet for a 3g dongle?
there are 2 screws under the upper rubbers and the dock open easy
there is a lot of spaces avaible
My MIFI might actually fit in there, all I would need to do is supply it power somehow.
I'm no hardware engineer though, but if thats possible it would save you from the driver issues with a 3g dongle.
I wonder if it would be possible to check which pins from the adapter connect to USB - so we can make DIY USB adapter for those without a dock.
hmm adding an hdd would be very interesting, sata won't be very hard, powersupply will be.

This is what I was looking for, looking to do some mods to the dock.
Thanks Markolino72.
Internally mount and wire a 32gb memory stick to the USB port so you get a 32gb hard drive added whenever you dock It might even have enough room for a portable USB hub so you don't lose use of the external usb port?
does anybody think it will be easy to make a DIY dock fix for those with battery draining issues like me?
It seems like it would be relatively easy - just make a switch to either connect or disconnect the cords coming from the docking point.
Or even better, maybe if you put the correct microcontroller in there you can have it switch the pins to floating, if it senses that there is no tablet connected (not sure about the details though)...

Have you seen the post in the General forum (2nd page now I think)? Posted by Asus_USA themselves, if you prove the 6 steps that your dock has the issue you can get a new one! I really do hope that I can get mine exchanged, waiting on a reply from my local service center..
Regards.
In regards to the hardware mods, that really looks amazing. Would love to put in my mifi there as well, attach it via USB to charge = your own 3g model Maybe a little modding you could get the mifi to power on only when the dock is connected (remove the battery of the mifi?) so that when it powers on it'll power on the mifi as well. Only a few thoughts.

it's a good thought but the mifi I have (novatel 2200) wont work without the battery, for some reason if the battery is bad or removed you cannot run usb, it must be the way they have the power run through the battery or charging. Not sure if all are like this or not.

I talked to the Asus service rep about it. They currently won't give you a new one since they have a hardware upgrade to fix it. If you wanted a new one you needed to do before they solved the problem. I'm waiting on the upgrade part to be delivered for for mine. Should in a few days.
A switch should theoretically work. The guy at the service center said the replace something that goes into the hinge of the dock. Looking at the teardown pics, you can see a wire goes into each side of the hinge, so I think they replace the wires and maybe make a new connection somewhere on the dock.
Surprising how much wasted space there seems to be in the dock -- it's nowhere near as tightly packaged as the tablet itself. Looks like Asus can optimize the size or fit some more features in future versions, if they want...
Let me see if I am thinking correctly...Your saying using something like mifi installed via USB wires (will it be always on?) then connect via WiFi on your transformer? So basically your putting the mifi in a case that can never be opened without a screwdriver? I guess one would always have access for your other devices as well as long as the TF is in the vicinity.
P.S. I think I think this is a good idea, not decided though. I like to think of it in a real world application.
there is another post with a guy putting in an SSD, but it bulges at the keyboard. A 32g SD card would be nice.

There's very little chance they'll give anybody the part, and nothing in the previous person's post suggested they're doing so for him.

Well I ended up calling them. I would have to ship the dock to "someone" in the US, have them ship it to the repair center, fix it, ship it back and then ask that "someone" to ship it back to me... sooo, I'm basically screwed... I ended up with a nice 150US paperweight (not even considering the horrible light bleed on the transformer).

Yeah, actually, I hadn't realized that but it does say it clearly on the product warranty page:
"Brazil and South American countries don’t support global service"
http://support.asus.com/warranty.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=20&s=16&m=Eee Pad Transformer TF101
took mine apart also and there is quite a bit of room.
i plan on putting a 128gb usb flash drive inside the dock and soldering onto the usb connections once i get all the bits in.
Any bigger pictures? Are the screws under the rubber feet?
just two screws under the rubber feet near the hinge then it just pulls apart from the top
had to take mine apart as the spring/clip mechanism for the sd card wouldnt lock the card in.
now the card is stuck in with no nails haha a simple fix.
This is good news. I hacked a Crystal HD decoder card (pcie), USB wifi dongle, a logitech nano receiver, and a 4 port micro usb hub (from a touch screen setup) into a Dell mini 9 and there was absolutely no room compared to this.
They even have covers for the USB ports, so if you remove a header and solder wires up you just have to hot glue / epoxy that cover from the back and you are money. Looks clean and stock.
I have an old 64 GB thumbdrive that might find a new home. Maybe a 1.8" usb HDD would fit in there with the battery, without the battery who knows.

Few question about dock

Im new user of Z Ultra and think about buying dock for it.
However I would like to know how it looks. I mean enywhere I see picters of it its only dock and usb cable, but is there real charger (i mean part which is connected to socket)? Or its needed to use one got with zu?
And what about not sony docks? Mostly i dont like unoriginal items, but its even1/3 of original price and it looks the same.
Sent using C6833 - Carbon KitKat
The dock cable is permanently connected to the dock (unless you open it up and remove it yourself). It's a USB connector, so you plug it into your wallcharger and stick it in a socket. There's a small magnet that snaps your Ultra in place when you get near the connectors. It's worth the money. Don't buy fake.
Thanks. Thats what i need to hear. However i thought that for this price (in my country its not small) they would give additional wallcharger
Sent using C6833 - Carbon KitKat
I got mine included with the phone, so that's probably why i only got one, and i don't know if you'll get a wallcharger with the dock.

Benefit of magnetic charger?

I have pre-ordered the Xperia Z2 here in the UK and it does not come with the magnetic charger. So before I buy one, I wanted to know what the actual benefit or pro's of having a magnetic charger?

The only benefit is that the phone can be charged without open the flap cover on the top left of your phone. The magnetic charger also avoids damaging the USB port in the long run.

I would also add its probably much quicker to dock it than open the flap and pop in the cable
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
+1 for not having to open flaps. I also like the idea of the phone not flying off a table when someone or a pet trips on the cable, and that the magnetic one should just detach easily.

i have the magnetic lead, and altho it does detach easily if cord gets pulled it will still move the phone a bit, so dont leave it near the edge of table lol
I personally think these chargers are a complete waste of money and pretty much rubbish. Cheaply made, horrible fit. I use them on several Xperia phones and one's phone never gets fully charged at a hundred percent with them. If not opening the flap is the only reason you buy these charger , Sony is laughing at you.

i'm not sure how did u come to that conclusion.
I have been on magnetic cable since day1.
And Sony's original magnetic cable may i add. It is solid and well built and excellent fit on the strong magnet.
It charges to 100% as it should in the same amount of time as any usb cables.
and the reason why i have this cable both at home and office is so I dont have to open the flaps.
I used to have a Z and opening and closing the flaps is really a hassle.
not to mention that the rubber seals at the flaps get worn out over time
If any recommendation is needed, go get yourself the original Sony magnetic cables, and not third parties.
Saw many horrible reviews on third parties cables, as with shook187 input above, poorly made, took long time to charge etc

Do you know where to get original Sony cables? From what I can tell, Sony doesn't sell them separately, only as a part of their docks. It's unknown if the cables you get from other sources are official.

The biggest benefit would be you never have to open the flaps when charging the device. That'll prevent the waterproofing from wearing out as easily, though Sony claims the flaps should last throughout the life time of the device.
Anyway I've been using the magnetic cable since day 1 and have had no problems at all. I'm using the official cable which is strong enough for you to pickup and use the phone while charging. It'll still detach or "rock" about if you move it but it's no big deal.

There's no such thing as a "Original" or "Genuine" magnetic charging cable from Sony, they're all 3rd party, the boxes are fake.
If the accessory is not listed on sonymobile.com then it's not genuine.

Magnetic charging adapters

Right guys I'm so ticked off right now. I bought two adapters. One a couple months ago. I lost it. Another one (the deff one from clove) a few weeks ago. I also lost that. Because they were both £10+ each its pissed me off a bit more.
My question is has anyone bought one which is good and has a strong magnet? I was considering these Sony cables that are on eBay, obviously fakes for the price they are but I'm not sure. What's your guys opinions?

i haven't used one myself yet. but a friend bought magnector x cable. and it seems to work pretty fine. magnet is strong charges quick. but not as fast as official dock or usb. but it seems pretty nice as most of the cases are not dock compatible.
http://www.amazon.com/Magnector-Per...qid=1411902689&sr=8-1&keywords=magnector+x+z2
I agree the magnector x is pretty good and the magnet is not all that bad, one thing to mention is that the magnector x is not compatible with all cases as the sides may disconnect the magnet.
My first one was the magnector-x but I found with that when I picked up the phone it would just fall off. Same with the deff. The problem I had with that is the fact that the charger wire seemed to be in opposite direction to the connector and therefore ended up not sitting correctly

MotoXoom bought a charger cable that does not have the cut off feature or detects that the charge has been connected the wrong way. So he basically shorted out hsi phone because it did not cut out. This was NOT a magnector-x adapter
The cable i brought doesn’t have a cut off feature? The phone has it, if you put a positive on a positive the phone shuts off.
As far as I know there is no protection whatsoever except for the mechanical small asymmetry (look at the phone connector and compare the "lower" with "upper" plastic tabs).
Certainly there is no electronic protection in the phone. Some phones survived "reverse connection", some not.
I don't think it can be any electronic protection in the cable or charger; they are designed to give out 0.5-1-2A and certainly that are most likely enough to fry the phone. MAYBE some wimpy chargers aren't capable of that but it's better to assume all are dangerous.
Has anyone ever tried one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161404030047?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magnetic-...lePhonesCasesPouches&var=&hash=item4d2641788c

Can you tell us the "week" of the device? You can go under the right flap, there's some plastic tray (similar to the sim tray on the left) there should be the IMEI and some other info, including something like 14W15 (meaning for example 2014 week 15). I've heard the ones after 18 shouldn't have the "unglued magnetic port" problem.
But yes, I really had to get the device for the 2 feature missing on most other phone (waterproof with external no-flap-removal charging and lanyard attachment point) but the S5 would've been better in every other way. Including the fact that 5>2 and it seems it counts. Probably Z5 would be perfect, if we ever get to that.
I have a pain in the bum case on atm and it will some work removing it. I just had another look at the magnetic port and yes it can be completely removed by just the magnet. From looking at the port there appears to be two pins and what appears to be some glue in the middle.
Could I not just super glue the port back into the phone?
If I look closely enough I can see that pressing down on the magnetic port opens up a smallish gap which I would assume would let water in.
My magnetic port moves too if a push it (even a little). And it was supposed to be from the new fixed batches.
WTF Sony? Metal and glass phone, parts held together by spit.

Docking Charger? Which one?

Hi people..
I am a proud owner of a Xperia Z Ultra. Now however I am worried the charging port's cover tab might break some day. This has led me to think I need a Docking charger. I want to know which one is MADE FOR the Z Ultra.
I mean a charger where I can dock and the phone charges too.
Thanks.

I bought a dock charger off eBay that is meant for general Xperia phones. I would not recommend it as trying to dock and match the magnetic charger on the phone to that of the dock is always a struggle.... Like Sandy Bullock trying to dock anything to the International Space Station in the movie Gravity.
Have you looked on eBay or Amazon? And yes, the DK-30 is the dock I'm currently using, one I purchased from Amazon, since the one from eBay stopped working.
