hi folks,
i am waiting for my mx4 and i have some questions
from what i ve read, as long as fs is rw we can apt-get install
but something puzzle me, can t find any example of ppl using aircrack or similar on ubuntu touch, isn t it possible?
thx for your time
Yes, you can install packages using apt-get when your system image is in writable mode. However, being in rw mode also means that you shouldn't install any system updates as they might break your installation. Therefore, you always have to roll back to read-only mode when a new image is available and reinstall all debian packages. You might understand that this can get quite annoying after some time.

thx @nikwen wonder in how long we ll have distro like kali getting ported to ubuntu touch, would be great!
so if i have understoud, what ever i install in rw, once i roll back to r only and update i loose it all correct? but on other hand if i am happy with my phone why upgrade
@nocomp Yes, you'll loose everything you have installed. However, since updates are comming only once per months, you could try writing a simple script which backs up your application data and another one which installs all software again and restores your data. That way it would be easy to upgrade your phone.

After a long time it's a moment to realease HTC HD2 ToolBox app with HBL. Small app that will allow you to boot linux inside android, and display everything on screen or through VNC connection. ToolBox app is also redesigned and added some new functions.
In pack is barebone debian distro with xfce4 interface.
There is also posibility that this app and HBL will work on other phones like leo (desire, nexus one ...)
Everything else you need to know is in Readme file.
Bug reports or suggestions on this thread, i'll answer when i'll get some time.
Enjoy !!!
EDIT: I added Readme file to this post so lazy people can read everything before downloading pack, or asking silly questions!
EDIT 2: I'm currently working on support for sdcard roms and other non-working builds. Also i would like to mention that is possible to run ANY linux distro with HBL (with some modifications) or even to run another android rom!
So consider this early versions only as "technology preview", more support and bug-fixes in next few days...
P.S Thank you all for your support !
Download Link
wow awesome
Does it work within Android like vns versions?
I've been waiting for (something similar, but this should do the work) such an app.
Thank you.
@hd# ..
Read the "Read-me" file ?
been waiting for this too.
But my broadband is down and I've already exceeded my monthly data allowance using wifi tether (500mb !!!)
... might have to do it anyway
Edit; still downloading... I assume there is no sound enabled on this
hi
can i boot ubuntu with it?
hi first big thanks for your hard work.
now i need some help to get linux running from HBL.
i´m using kingdom sense3 rom from dungphp.
i installed hd2 toolbox and copied linux folder to root of sd card.
i installed HBL (Busybos is installed in version 1.19.x.x) i took rootexplorer and give /system/bin/ write permissions for owner/groups/others.
But i need initd support: what i have to do to get this?? or is it on my rom?
please help cause at the moment i´ve bootloops everytime i want to boot linux.
Thank's a lot for this! I've been waiting for this for for a while!!!
So if I understand this right.... which I don't think I did at first..... this is basically the same thing as booting ubuntu and connecting to it with vnc, the ubuntu that is in another thread.... i ask because what I am looking for is usb host support.... which I don't believe is possible with the other ubuntu that boots in android.... and I think if I undestand this right... is not possible with this one either......i do appreciate the work done on this app a lot.... but to me, it's useless unless usbhost is supported because of tiny menus and buttons not being easily clickable with fingers..... so I want to use my wireless mouse that has a usb receiever......
edit: download finally finished, I tried it out.... I really like it, couple questions.... is it normal for shutdown not to work? I chose to boot and show on local screen instead of vnc..... when I did that, it started fine, I messed around a little, then tried to shutdown... it said shutdown command failed or something similar.... then rebooted android..... and when you choose to boot on local screen, is this kicking android out so it's only linux, kind of like haret and booting android from winmo off sd? And last, is it possible for usbhost?
Edit2: I could barely see the text at the bottom of the hotboot screen that says to use log out feature to return to android... I did that instead of shutdown, there were no errors and it went to my android boot animation, then booted back to android just fine.....
Its working well. Thanks .I have the same question as Diesburg does. One more how to make right click.

HBL actually shuts down all android processes (except init and some critical ones) and then switches to linux. It's normal for shutdown not to work right now, in future it will work but for now use log out to exit from linux. USB Host support for now is not possible without modified kernel, but i'm working on custom kernel with usb-host/normal mode switching.
I must admit i didn't have much time to work on this project so many things can be improved, and i hope in fallowing days/weeks i will have much needed time to work on it. So everything is still a "prototype"!
@alltome
99.99% of custom roms have init.d support, just check if you have init.d directory in /etc.
Hi managed to install HBL but when I try to start linux using local screen the screen just hangs on "loading linux..." for ages. Tried vnc but doesn't work either. it doesn't seem to start shutting down android because if I press hardkey back button the phone is normal.
tried changing "writtable" statuses on the mount screen, but no joy. Is this what you mean by " writable /system/bin folder", or must I use rootexplorer?
Many thanks
u rock
hey dan1j3l HBL works flawlessly
keep on rockin'

The same problem for me, stuck at "HTC HD2 ToolBox loading linux.." screen
I'm using MIUI Offician 1.5.20
All those with problems starting HBL can you send me output of these few commands so i can get more info (use adb shell)
busybox ps | grep hbl
busybox mount
busybox ls -la /system/bin/hbl
busybox ls -la /etc/init.d
busybox df -h
Hello dan1j3l First of all I'd like to Thank you for your hard work and this cool app which has great potential...
now that being said, I'm also having some troubles like stated above from other users i managed to install HBL (i think, cause i got the success message when clicking install HBL) but when I try to start linux using local screen, the screen just hangs on "loading/booting linux..."
Below i attached the output from commands on adb shell
Have the info you wanted.
Thanks dan1j3l

Hmm... I see you are using sdcard rom, never tested HBL with sdcard roms. It seems i need to make a different installer for sdcard builds... I will try to test it this weekend, then i will know more.
when i try to start hbl my phone vibrates two times and restarts. but it starts already with the bootanimation. then it boots back to android.
i'm using ndt miui. busybox is installed and linux image is in the root of the sdcard in linux folder.
So I saw a post but it was from a year ago and no one replied....so kill me.
saw a post on Unlockr.com about the Android kitchen...http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/26/how-to-create-your-own-custom-rom-for-android-part-1-setting-up-the-kitchen/
Got all the way to downloading the java6 bin and jre and cant get them downloaded and installed....
I know the thread is from a while ago, maybe the versions have changed and someone can give me a new link? Dunno, but I cant get it up and running and i would love to try my hand at cooking up a lil sumpn sumpn....feel me?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated....
BTW...I am running a Win 7 64 bit OS if that helps.
I think what you mean is that you want to use Ubuntu to compile a ROM.
[*] Download VirtualBox from the Oracle website
[*] Download a Ubuntu ISO
[*] Create a new virtual machine with a 50gb virtual hard drive
[*] Mount the ISO
[*] Install Ubuntu in VirtualBox
[*] Put all of the ROM kitchen files in the virtual machine
[*] Et Voila!
Of course, it's easier to get a PC and install Ubuntu as a proper OS, but if you don't want to format your hard drive, it's the next best thing.
Remember to press the thanks button!

OK i stand corrected, i wish to compile a ROM using ubuntu....my bad. But the fact is that I cannot get past installing the Ubuntu in the virtual box...I have that part completed and it runs fine..but the next step is what is getting me one of the links are bad and the other, well the other leads to a room full of mirrors and maybe I just cant get the proper file downloaded, but it keeps giving me errors when i try to install.
Hi! I have been using touch for some weeks on my nexus 4 now and it is working all-right for me. Unfortunately i cannot update install / remove apps any more. When i try to update the apps via the system settings nothing happens. When i try to download an apps via app store it says cannot download. Removing "seems" to work but when done - the app is still there - even after reboot. Can anyone help me? Would be great!
Ah another thing - adb shell was working fine but stopped working as well - i get "device not found" now...
I think the File-System might be read only?
You need to re-add your Ubuntu One account and installing apps will work again.
To use adb you need to enable the developer mode in System Settings > About phone > Developer Mode.

I too am having problems updating my apps. From system settings, I have 18 updates that will not work when I tell it to. I have them on auto-update as well.
sudo apt-get update
does not work either
@Xinthose Have you tried readding your Ubuntu One account as well? That was needed due to some code changes introduced a while ago.

That worked, thank you. Why doesn't sudo apt-get update work?
@Xinthose Due to the way system updates are done, "apt-get" doesn't work for now. Since they, however, plan to use the same update method for the desktop in the future, they will at some point have to add apt-get support. They already talked about how that would be done on the ubuntu-phone mailing list some time ago.

Just forgot something: You can actually make apt-get work (and everyone working on the core system components actually has to do that to test their changes) but that breaks system updates.
To do so you need to make the image writable (look for the how-to on the Ubuntu for phones installation page). You can flash back to a non-writable image later but that always comes with the risk of data loss. So it's definitely not recommended for anyone who is not a developer!

OK, thank you. To make the phone work exactly like Ubuntu would be nice. What is the password for sudo / su ?
@Xinthose Just enter your device passcode/passwort.

And yes, you can install debian packages, but that breaks OTA updates.

i change to and remounted RW
and did update and upgrade all worked fine but killed my dual boot
so if i did RW and then update
and installed say lifeograph would it install that package and be useable from the repository?

Did you upgrade using the system settings update mechanism? That won't be blocked and the update will seem to work, but things will break after some time, just like your dual boot, especially when you start installing custom packages.
Theoretically, the application should work, but you're going to have to set up XMir properly to run X applications. If you are interested in doing that, the guy who made this video is the one who can tell you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3PUYoa1c9M
This video may be helpful, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfMLzlki9XE
AND you'll have to install the devel-proposed channel as stable/rtm doesn't contain the necessary software yet.
I got root write - updated and upgraded and it killed my nexus 5 install basicaly wrote over the boot sector I think !
Can I not get a chroot for ubuntu apps I have on ubuntu and would they run? For example lithograph?
Ill take a look I've installed the sdk to test as well I'm certain these apps will get added soon scopes are great but being able to install ubuntu apps like lifeograph and other apps would be amazing.. Is this on the cards or do the developers have to release the touch apps version ?

I'm sorry for you killing your boot sector. Were you able to set up everything again?
I tried the chroot method some time ago but you still need to install the necessary packages for that using apt-get. So you need a writable system again...
You could, however, try to package the apps as a click package yourself. I've never tried that and I don't know of anyone who did, but if you ship xmir and the application in a click package, it should work.
I just had to reinstall and re-root was good really because got it set up right now.
I'm did a emulated rw and compiled lifeograph from source that it might work but it wont connect to mir using cmake there must be a use flag or ill look are cross compiling maybe.. Does it create a click package or a deb ? Ill take a poke around in apt cache to look at packages already cached from install

Great that you got it sorted out.
There's a trick to get the app working on Mir: Lifeograph is an app for the X window system. To make it run with Mir, there's a software called Xmir. Check out whether it's in the repos. If not, the source code should be online somewhere.
The app is probably going to compile as a debian package though. Either you stay with your phone in rw mode or you look into packaging it as a click package. The latter might be a little bit more difficult.
I have been trying for a few weeks to install kali linux on my lg g3. So far with no luck I have tried every guide on the internet but all have failed me can someone give me a detailed walkthrough on how to do so? my sd card is formatted and partitioned to fat32. I wish to install kali to the second 14 gig partition I made and named ext2. my phone is rooted with busy box installed it is the lg g3 S990 runing stock rom 5.0.1
anyone have any experience with this?
Here are some screen shots

I don't think that you can..... They don't offical support it and there is a lot of things you have to take into effect. For example kernel, arm version, and hardware, wifi chips, touch screen drivers and a WHOLE LOT MORE!.
What would you suggest then? I'm debating getting a nexus 7 and installing nethunter on it would that be better??? I've been able to get quite close to having it work

GOOD NEWS (maybe)
I am able to get kali running through the complete linux installer app BUT it appears to be missing all pentesting tools and has no gui because vnc viewer wont connect but it does at least behave the way the app makers say it should :/

Have you just looked into installing it onto like raspberry pi or a Chromebook or something? It seems pretty easy..... Plusnit might work better then the phone.
If I can't get to work ill be switching to a nexus seven with nethunter. I found a guide on how to run kali in limbo pc emulator and it appears to work to some extent but I get no gui nothing. I fear the iso file may be corrupted. Ill post screenshots next

OK, cool
Then I guess the nexus 7 is your best guest unless you get something like a Samsung S2 and put it in monitor mode and use aircrack-ng. Also the raspberry pi thing is pretty good if your like pretty handy you can wire up a battery, pi, and screen then just use a wireless keyboard.

You can install kali linux on linux deploy and run with android VNC
I am running with linux deploy it on my AT&T 3g.
Im pretty sure your problem is in your configuration on preferences. Generally the SD is formatted to FAT which has maximum image file size 4095 MB. So pretty much if you want kali tools then hypothetically you could reformat your SD or external to ext4. There is also a permissions problem because of the image location. Here's how I got around it for now, I just started altering this phone 2 days ago so I'll keep you updated if you want. I moved the environment location to a folder in SD and it has consistently held up to 6000MB which is plenty for the os, necessary additions and a few fun kali tools.
Here's my mini pictorial, it's only my second post so maybe this will help.
Just do the settings like mine, Wait forever while it installs then after it finishes hit reconfigure. It takes a couple of minutes to reconfigure then you press start and wait until it's finished loading, press your home button, open VNC, make sure your port is 5900 and default password is "change me"
Open up a terminal and type "sudo su" make a password, update and make sure you have fun.
When you're finished go back to linux deploy, press stop and then use the menu button to exit the app
