First of all, I'd like to thank everyone in this forum for creating and supporting development of the G2. LG may not support this phone anymore, but this forum holds strong. That said I am investigating potential upgrades for the G2. I would like suggestions. The following phones will not work:
- Phones that don't support Verizon
- Phones without strong developer communities
- Phones released more than a year ago
Thanks everyone!

Your biggest issue will be the Developer support on a Verizon device. Verizon devices tend to see ALOT less development then GSM based devices. If you liked the G2 then why not get the G3 or G4?

With the state of hardware right now any device released within the past 3 years is still a good device. They will handle anything a new device will. Could look at the moto droid, Not really sure what else verizon has to offer really as there is no Verizon in the State I live in.
Even if LG had dropped support before releasing lollipop, the G2 could still handle 99.7% of everything you throw at it smoothly.
Compare the G2 to new devices. You have 1080P which looks great and doesnt drain the battery. 3000mAh battery, more or same as latest devices. Compare snapdragon 800 to 808/810 and you will only see a good difference in benchmarks. 5.2" screen thats neither too big nor small.
LG did great on the G2, if not too great since upgrades to this day still dont appeal.
Enjoy your G2 and buy something else

OEM updates are not reliable. The OEM could push an update to the carrier but the carrier never release the update to users. This happens more then people know. Verizon and att are well known for doing this.

My only other thought for something fast and not all that big would be the Droid Turbo. Not sure how locked up it is however. When I use to have the old razr we would use safestrap, but never had a true unlocked bootloader....

I don't know if you are paying attention to the development forum but they have clockwork tethered n on the device and they are actively working on an unlock n r very close.
Development is not everything !
NEVER buy a phone for what it 'might' do in the future. Buy it for what it can do now.
If custom roms are important to you, don't get this phone right now. Get an S3 or One X.
If a really good oem experience is OK for you, and root is good enough, then look no further! I think this is an awesome phone.
But until proven otherwise, assume that the bootloader will never be unlocked. It might be, but if that is critical to you, then you should be buying a phone that can do that today.
Each to their own.

Why buy those when the N4 is for sale as I type this note. You will not only get the custom ROM's but the quickest update to the latest releases of Andriod.

If only N4 had LTE, then I would jump right on that. In the meantime I'm looking forward to getting my OG, and keeping my fingers crossed for the devs to work their magic. Anyone else feel the same?

Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium
This phone is an animal. And even now, the test units for the N4 have been updated with the build that will be on the shipped units and in benchmarks and real world testing it doesn't hold a candle to this phone. That of course poses a couple of questions like why is vanilla android not as fast or faster than the build on the optimus g if the hardware is so similar? And why buy the n4 for faster access to updates if those updates don't bring it up to the same performance level as the Optimus G?
Wireless charging is the only feature I wish we had and hey, I can live without that. So IMO this phone is superior and will be even more so if/when the developers here work there magic and get passes the locked bootloader. So I would suggest sticking around.

While I agree that LTE and expandable storage are important, if lack of sufficient progress towards boot loader unlock, in 5 days, would drive you to return the device, for one that will get customer ROMs, getting an S3 which from what I read is about to lose it's dev support due to Samsung policies (devs are tired of doing inefficient, cumbersome work arounds that shouldn't be necessary) isn't a good option, even if you got LTE everywhere you went and could expand storage to 2 TB. The One x has it's drawbacks too.
Even stock unrooted, this thing is a monster in terms of what I'm seeing it do. I may still trade it in for the One X+ at the end of this week, but if I don't I certainly can't find fault with it yet. If I can survive a Droid Bionic with utter lack of Dev support (for good reasons, obviously), the LG OG will be a snap!

I'm thinking about return the OG also, and possibly getting the One X+ (if it's battery life is decent) or the Nexus 4 (and giving up LTE, not sure though).

I really wish the HTC One X+ had 2GB of RAM, mainly because of the uncertainty of needing 2GB for the next version of Android OS.

The other thing you aren't understanding is the Tegra 3 only supports single channel memory, so that one gig is much slower than our 2gb of dual channel memory.

Galaxy S4 is close to my ideal phone, but I refuse to back a monopolist, judge me.
HTC One has fantastic build quality, when you get one that doesn't have monumental flaws and have to return it multiple times.
LG Optimus G Pro has no roms and the bootloader is locked tight for now it seems.
The HTC Max looks really square shaped.
Sony unveils products tomorrow, but who knows when they will release.
Is there a high end motorola phone coming? Is the Optimus G2 set to release soon? I need input and I have nothing to go off of.
Looking at your list, i would suggest you go for htc one. It is way better than s4 and g2..
I have personally used s4 and one for quite some time now. The difference is clearly visible using some tools. Anyway, the decision is all yours good luck with your new purchase.

You know, everyone seems to care about device support but I don't. Not even a little. I keep my devices for 9-12 months. When I had an iPhone I would absolutely dread updates. They would mean that my phone would get slower and, although updated, I wouldn't have any access to the awesome new features.

Thinking about it, to replace my Galaxy Nexus. But since Ive never touched an LG smartphone Im not sure what (if?) the status of "third party" development would be like. Ive also never seen their overlays over Android so Im not sure what Ill be in for.
But, Snapdragon 800 makes up for some of that

Will be my first LG since the Dare - if that counts. I usually sport a Samsung or Apple but am currently running a Lumia 928. WP8 has a long ways to go! Looking forward to the G2!
I've had every HTC Android that Sprint carried, but switched to the Nexus 4 in February, so the G2 won't be my first LG device, but it will be my first LG device with LG software on it. I'm looking forward to this phone.
Just pre-ordered it, I have had my HTC Amaze 4G for a bit now and the LG G2 will be a huge leap, in terms of specs! lol This will be my first LG experience! Hope for the best!
I've used the Charge, GNex, Rezound, Maxx, DNA, S3, Note 2, Maxx HD, and the S4. This will be my first LG. I'm not too worried about the bootloader being locked down. The navigation keys are movable and most of the other things I'll want to change can be done just by being rooted,

Really lucky you bro.. I didn't realize they were shipping them right away. Good news.
Could you please share your experience about
Knock knock
Music player sound quality
Camera
Screen quality
If possible open a new thread for AT&T phones(just a suggestion). Just so all AT&T experiences fall in one place. Developers can figure out the missing features too.
I am going to switch from my note 2. I really love my note 2 but the size after a year is starting to get to me a bit. 5 inch screens look funny to me because of them being narrow and tall and I love the bigger screen in the small form factor. Great specs and great size. I will miss my note, but the lag, crappy gps, terrible amoled screen, and the slightly too big size are starting to turn me off.

Should be happy that the e970 is pretty much identical to the Nexus 4. We already have kitkat... so it does not really matter. Hell, we were one of the first devices to get 4.4
Even though that's the case LG is dropping support for a phone that is less than a year old.

While this may be true, it is still speculation.
The proper question should have been if the OG will be getting 4.2, 4.3, or any update. They just said no to 4.4, which is like 3 version above their last update. I do not know of many (if any) devices that have skipped 3 updates to the latest and greatest.
I'm just stoked that this device has got updated at all. Was not cool spending a truck load of $$$ on 3 of the 1st dual core phones, Motorola Atrix 4g..... that device received ZERO updates.
I learned the hard way to never again buy a phone with the hopes of getting OTA updates. Will either buy a Nexus device, or like I did with the OG... research phones that have the same hardware as a Nexus device.
But you still loose lte.. Its a HUGE step from 3g

For me, it's not even about wanting 4.4 since the major ROMs will all have it within the next few months. It's more about the fact that LG completely ****ed OG users with their godawful updates. I mean, we basically JUST got 4.1 after waiting how long? And then they go ahead and stop development after that? That just pisses me off. While I can easily flash a 4.4 ROM, it's more about principal for me.
LG can make a good device. They were calling the LGOG the "new and improved LG" and trying to restore LG's name with this device. Then they do this for their "flagship" device? That is seriously messed up. I am never going to get another LG-supported device again.
It was released with outdated software so it wouldn't take the spotlight away from N4. Secondly, if LG were to supply an update AT&T would file it in the trash.

I would love a stock version of the latest greatest OS and I'm not disagreeing with any of you on that, but we all have to be realistic about it. It is a pretty well known fact that many and most major corporation are only concerned about profit. The mobile phone business is a extremely competitive business. Releasing the newest OS every time it rolls out costs money for development as they need more developers to maintain every device. Also that would increase the amount of time a person will hold onto a phone, which leads to less phones being sold. They also know that a huge percentage of buyers are going to buy a new damn phone every 6 months just so they can have the latest and greatest. So you will have better odds of winning the lottery, then these companies changing their update policies anytime soon.
It does not matter which company you get a phone from, LG, Motorola, Samsung.... they will all screw you with updates. Samsung may be slightly better with updates, but you still get screwed on updates. My friend has the S4, he has it bone stock and is still on 4.2. It was just confirmed for that device that they will not be getting 4.4 anytime soon. The S4 will get 4.3 soon.... but it will be months before they get 4.4 and it could even be longer then that.
It is what it is. Us consumers are going to get screwed regardless. BUT.... we have the power to be smart consumers. Which is why we are all here at this forum. We are taking the power into our own hands and increasing the life expectancy for our devices on our own.
So there really is nothing to be unhappy about. If you are smart about which phone to buy, you have nothing to worry about. We are all here to help and learn from each other to make our device better then these corporations hand them out to us. The power of this community puts a smile on my face every time. We have control over our (phones) destiny, not them. I would rather rely on the power of the people then rely on the power of some corporation that does not give a **** about you.
lol /end rant :highfive:
All you have to say it were trapped by corporations and were stuck here probably forever because they don't care about the consumers they care about the money they get if the consumers give it to them they already got what they wanted now they're like **** it we have our money

I've never really paid attention but the only phone I know was EOL while had it was the Motorola photon and they stopped updating it soon after... I know damn well this phone can handle any android they throw at it so what is that about??
Again thanks guys for everything.. Been here since the HTC hero lol.. Came a long way since then and man android is amazing.. Thanks for everything fellas

Don't worry about it. LG rarely updates a phone more than once or twice anyway. The devs at XDA will take care of us as long as they still use it. Like you said, it's got more than enough horsepower to last a while. Probably the only real killer will be when everyone goes to x64 operating systems.

This is indeed the phone to beat. Thank you very much for the information you have.
I read that a carrier in Canada has put an "end of life" on the g2, and they do list s4 as an alternative. It's also known that the g3 is in the works and will be out this summer. 4.4.2 may be the last official android version for the g2.
However! There is a huge development community behind the g2, so it's likely that versions will continue well into the future, the g3 ROM will likely be ported to the g2. When the g2 does stop receiving official updates, I would root and be happy with what the devs here can cook up

How can anyone think the S4 is a superior phone to this?

Why get rid of this phone? This phone is arguably a step above the Nexus line so far. We have plenty of AOSP options to choose from and now that we have official Kit Kat we will surely have plenty of new/more stable options.

Well I for one will not get rid of the g2..i really do just like this phone haha... I have managed to keep the phone stock this long and may keep it stock til the day comes they stop supporting it... Then yes i will root and keep it alive.. Even as a back up.. I just hate to see it go officially.. Can anyone else see 5.0 running fine on this phone cause I for one believe it will.. Sounds good don't it.. G2 5.0..lol hopefully one day

All this means is that LG is going to stop producing the phone in favor of a newer model. Samsung makes their phones for years beyond their relevant lifespan and you can still find ancient Galaxy phones like the S2 on the shelves. The S3 is still the absolute go-to phone for any free contract, prepaid or non-contract deals. LG is a much smaller manufacturer and doesn't have the deals and agreements like Samsung does to pimp out their phones.
The Galaxy S4 is not going anywhere, it's going to stick around just as long as any of the Galaxy S flagships if not longer. The LG G2 will just be EoL as far as the carrier is concerned. So if you're a Bell customer, I'd recommend to get familiar with modifying your phone because Bell is likely not to push you any future updates.

Not sure what you mean by deals because the G2 was free much sooner than the S3. The OG and G2 both saw rapid price drops.

When I got my G2, the S3 was being peddled by every single carrier and given out like candy. You are/were able to pick up the S3 on almost any shelf as a prepaid device and if you signed into any deal that had free phones you got a S3. Samsung is still most likely making the S3, "emerging markets"(I assume) and every prepaid company basically relies on that phone. LG has none of those deals really and you'll never find a G2 in a plastic package hanging on a shelf at Walmart. Within 6 months, you'll most likely see the S4 in those packages.
This just says that LG is going to stop production of the G2 most likely because the G3 is coming out. LG doesn't have the market or ability to continue to sell their old flagship phone for years on end. They probably didn't have a huge profit margin on it since they can't sell and pump out millions upon millions of the phone. Thus since sales are tapering off and people are going for the new M8/S5 they're focusing on moving forward.
This could also just simply mean Bell is going to stop selling it since it's not selling well for them.

It's probably only LG's fault, not the carriers. If LG stopped making the G2 and started the G3 (due to limited manufacturing capacity), the carriers can't get any more stock so they list it as End Of Life. Meanwhile, the S4 is still being manufactured (even the S3 4G is still manufactured) so that's why they list it as alternative.

Can you buy a Nexus 4 today, and Google i think has 18 month update policy, so next version might be the last for Nexus 4 too. Fact is in today's tech world, you have a new flagship every 6 months, that does not necessarily mean you have to upgrade every 6 months.
Even if 4.5 is launched by end of this year, 95% of apps will still work on 4.4 and our phone is more then capable to handle them. So sit back and enjoy mate, until you wanna get suck in number wars and not care about the experience
I wouldn't let the EOL tag scare anybody away from this beast of a phone. Thanks to the awesome XDA forums, rooting, and a new battery; I made my old Droid Eris last for 2+ years and still going strong before getting a different phone. And the Droid Eris was EOL like 3 hours after I bought it haha

Nope. The last Android for G2 will be in 2015. Look for Optimus G Pro, it is year old and it got Kitkat 2nd update in Korea. So stop FUD
