Hey guys,
I know there has been a couple of posts like this that I have found through searching but none have actually found a solution, so instead of resurrecting a old thread I thought I would start a new one.
Basically I am having some issues with my new pebble blue (yey) S3 . I have found that sometimes when the phone is sleeping when I press the power button to bring it out of sleep the lock screen begins to hang. This is followed by a number of different things, the screen either glitches for a bit and then begins to work or it stays locked and needs a battery pull. As well as this I've found that randomly either when charging or not and the phone is sleeping it simply becomes unresponsive, staying on a black screen and needing a battery pull to fix (this has only occured a few times, the hanging lock screen occurs quite often).
I have done some searching and found little in the way of a solution or what the problem is, however I have found that when the lock screen hangs -if it begins to work again after glitching out the 'WIFI connected to ****' appears at the bottom of the screen. Anyway if anyone has any ideas or also recieves this problem I would really appreciate some help as it's driving me crazy and I'm unsure if it is a common S3 bug or a faulty handset, in which case I have limited time to RMA.
Cheers in advance
Hmm, sounds like a faulty phone to me. Try taking it back to get it exchanged for onother one. S3 was built to fly not crawl.
You'll want to go through a process of elimination to figure out when might be causing it.
Something you can try and test with (one at a time)
-turn on airplane mode
-turn off live wallpaper
-shut down all running tasks
-change your lock screen security method
-limit the number of widgets running on all the screens
-reduce the number of active screens
Probably other things you can try to pull out of the equation, but thats a good start
After looking up dial-a-phones returns policy it would seem that I have 28 days to return if the handset is faulty, so this atleast gives me some breathing room to try out any suggestions for fixes. I will begin to eliminate each of the suggested items above however as the lock screen problem is intermittent it make take a day so actually see if it has had an effect, which is annoying at the least.
On another note a numberupted of people are stating high battery life on their devices however mine doesn't seem to be as good and I do have power saving on as well as nfc etc. turned off. This makes me believe my handset could have a fault, but tbf I haven't allowed for a discharge to 5% and the recharging to 100% which I heare allows for optimisation of the battery.
EDIT**** I have changed the lock screen previously and found it had no effect on the problem and I do not have a live wallpaper in use.
Phone Freezing after reboot and auto wifi signal found on.
Same here, been happening the last few days after I installed Avast. Also, turning off and on the auto on wifi seemed to replicate the problem.
The phone will boot to the lock screen and freeze a bit, and sometimes the news ticker freezes, and then after unlocked, I try to turn off wifi signal has been found on the notification dropdown and then tries to auto connect to wifi, the phone will freeze up if I dont turn it off in time.
Once the auto wifi connect is off and reboots, then the phone will keep glitching up until it catches up processing alot of processes it was trying to do for about 1/2 hr. Also, if phone freezes up for too long, like after trying too many time of unlocking the screen while freezing up, the phone gets stuck at the lock screen and the phone almost overheated, in an area right below the battery. I had to pull the battery out to cool it off.
It seems to be a glitch in the auto wifi, especially if alot of resources are being used. Once Avast was on my phone about 1.5GB RAM is being used sometimes and since has really slowed the phone down. Going uninstall alot of apps.

Same problem.
No problem if Wifi is switched off prior to sleep.
No problem if Wifi connection is still available.
Problem to lockscreen if Wifi connection is broken (move away from connected router).
Any suggestion?

Exactly the same here. Driving me crazy. I did root the phone using the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit. I don't know if the problem also exists on non rooted devices.
S3 black screen after unlocking
Has there anyone experience S3's screen went on black? I have pebble blue S3 - GT-I9300. Cases when unlocking, answering an incoming call or attempting to turn off an
alarm? Mine happens when after unlocking the screen then it goes black and screen becomes unresponsive. It happens intermittently and even after 3 times of
reprogramming. I am now going to have it replaced. I am having a lot of troubles -- it exits on its own when im reading or composing an SMS; files were deleted after
restarting the unit, and an app opens up even not touching the scree. This is expensive and I am paying a lot just to experience this king of inconvenience.

I also rooted my S3 a few days ago (with the S3 toolkit), and have had lots of problems with unresponsive lockscreens (I use PIN, because of exchange connection). It takes a few seconds or maybe up to as long a minute before I'm able to punch in the PIN-numbers. Before this the screen lights up but does not respond to input.
But the WiFi-connection issue might be what is the triggering factor, because after a boot it wotks just fine for several hours, if I'm not moving out of my current WiFi zone. First I thought it was either Secure Settings or Tasker that made my device lock up in this matter, but now as they are both uninstalled, the problem still occurs.
Are you running some kind of custom rom, or just the latest stock ROM, but rooted?

Just the latest stock ROM but rooted. I've found out that turning off the wifi power safe mode fixes the problem for me. To do this:
- In the dailer enter *#0011#
- Press the menu key
- Select wifi
- Press the on/off button.
The wifi power safe mode will however be turned on during boot. So rebooting will set it back on.
*#0011# seems does the trick. But is annoying had to do this every time after power off (change battery, change Sim, flying).... Anyway to keep the setting?
I am also on stock Rom and rooted. Interested to know any non-rooted phone got this problem?
BTW. I found a quick (at least quicker than pull the battery) way to get out of the forzen lock screen (sometimes forgot to do the 0011 trick): press the power button (screen will Dim instead of OFF), then hold the home button for few seconds, as soon as you see the "menu" and "back" button lit up, the lock is un-freeze...
A permanent solution is appreciated for such an advance phone....

Not that I know of.
Problem solved. For me anyway. Hope works for all of you having the same trouble.
My trouble begin with recent upgrade to LH3. My S3 was rooted by S3 toolkit v2.0. CWM installed was v4 something.
I un-rooted the phone. Uninstalled S3 toolkit v2.0. Re-installed the S3 Toolkit v5.0. Rooted the phone again (CWM become v6....).
I do not know it was CWM version caused the trouble or not. But my S3 is ok now.
I got it on my non-rooted phone, any additional solutions/suggestions? or service?
I found solution for problem . And my phone is working well. I downloaded rom file android 4.1.2 and flash my phone
JB 4.1.1 caused these WiFi issues on my phone

Exact opposite for me...never had the problem then since loading stock JB 4.1.1 with root I get lockups or freezes whenever WiFi is turned off or I leave my router's range. As soon as I disconnect from WiFi the whole phone freezes.
The *#0010# also locks up the phone when I turn off the WiFi power saving feature.
None of this happened before JB...and I replaced my phone with week via warranty due to this and the new phone does the exact same thing as soon as I upgraded to JB with root.
Any ideas?
Black screen / random reboot solution
Hi All,
I've had the black screen / random reboot issue for a few days. The only way to restore functionality on black screen lockup was to remove the battery.
I tried changing to Chrome browser and stopping the stock browser as suggested in some threads but it kept crashing.
I searched everywhere and most threads suggest a dodgy motherboard.
For me the issue was related to either a single PDF download via the stock browser or the fact I had quite alot of saved PDF files on my phone (S3 Stock firmware I9300XXELLA)
After deleting all the files listed in Internet downloads (look for Downloads with a green arrow Icon in apps) my trusty S3 has returned to normal. No black screen lockups, no hanging, runs like a dream!
I appreciate this may not solve everyones black sceeen issues but I haven't found any other thread with this solution. Hope it works for you.
Thanks,
Giz.

Was this happening on JB for you? You mention stock firmware (not familiar with I9300)...so I am guessing it was ICS.
For me the issues are with JB and I had no files at all in the Downloads folder after a certain point when I wiped / formatted the SDCard...so I do not think my lockups were related to PDFs. But I did (and still do) have a ton of music and a lot of movies on the External MicroSD Card....and quite a few custom notification and ringtone MP3s on the Internal SDCard. Next time I load JB I will run it a few days with none of this media loaded....

This is on JB 4.1.2, Phone had been updated to 4.1.2 for about a month. The issues started after a pdf download. Once all pdf's were deleted the handset works perfectly.

Hey guys,
I'm hoping somebody here might have an idea for where I can start to look for this problem, I have had the SGS3 for around a year now, I put CM10 on it initially (from memory), upgraded to CM10.1 when that was released via the nightly releases and I have been running those since.
Recently I updated from a Feb / early March release (cant recall specifically which one) to the next latest (mid to late March I believe) to move from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I believe a little after that ( if not that day) I began to very occasionally have small lock up problems with the phone. It would lag out for a short amount of time, or would just completely lock up on the screen its on for a while (if I leave it, it can be between 30 minutes to an hour before it becomes responsive again)
Often I would need to use it so I just end up having to hold the power button in to force a reboot to clear it.
Initially I thought "ok just a bug in a nightly, that's cool, it'll be patched out soon enough", a few days later a nightly came down that fixed a notification bar drop down loop problem I was getting but this other thing has stuck around, depending on how my phone feels its occurring a lot or a little each day, generally seconds / a minute after I start to use it.
I have since jumped around on a few more CM10.1 roms and I have even reverted to the 4.2.1 roms I was using ( I still have them on the phone so I know they are the right ones) to test if its that, but now they are encountering this problem as well.
The phone is completely clear now of user data, I have done a full data clear via CWM and even the original Google "welcome" setup section has locked up more than once in my attempts to set the initial configuration of the phone....
Any thoughts? CWM etc has never had a problem so while it seems to lean toward hardware i'm still thinking its software, maybe a CM10.1 release has updated something else in the phone that's now causing problems, something more firmware related etc?
EDIT: to give some examples, just before I readded my exchange details and started to sync contacts etc, I went into contacts, opened the menu and selected "Settings" to change the first name last name sorting and it just stopped on the settings button, settings was still lit up etc but it was not responsive.
Just now (about 30 minutes later) I have pressed to turn the screen on and its on the lockscreen. Great its back I think, i'll grab the baseband / kernel etc to put in here, I slide it to the unlock and bam, frozen on that now.
more info
I had a play this morning and activated the CPU overlay etc as well as strict mode.
The phone has just done it again in the play store, however the CPU overlay shows nothing out of the ordinary and there was no screen flash to indicate a long run causing a problem.
Interestingly the cursor in the search bar for google play is still blinking, so the phone is still "alive" however i cant control it via the touchscreen or the hardware buttons.
I am trying to dump the log via ADB now however its gotten as far as finding the phone and seems to have stopped (though maybe its still going, i'll see soon hopefully)
Anybody got any ideas? This is driving me crazy and i'm not sure where to go with it now, i guess back to stock is the next option then maybe a warranty claim if thats still possible....
Log collected
Either it was still collecting or it collected after the last event in the log but i've uploaded the log to pastebin here:
http://pastebin.com/Cc20CYZH
The main thing seems to be this:
Code:
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): Requests in progress:
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): execute started 646409ms ago - running, sql="COMMIT;"
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): The connection pool for database '/data/data/com.android.email/databases/EmailProvider.db' has been unable to grant a connection to thread 237 (AsyncTask #2) with flags 0x1 for 646.44104 seconds.
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): Connections: 1 active, 0 idle, 0 available.
And also this:
Code:
W/InputEventReceiver( 3327): Attempted to finish an input event but the input event receiver has already been disposed.
FYI - that bit at the bottom of the paste about the screen turning off with timeout, the screen has now turned off but i still cant turn it back on etc, soon enough it'll probably reboot (which seems to be what it ends up doing) then it'll be ok again until a problem occurs again.
I'm currently trying a new baseband as recommended here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133401
Will post the results after a few days, fingers crossed.
Did you had the same problem on any other aosp or aokp based roms?
Or just try flashing the stock rom

I actually never ended up changing back, i flashed the new baseband as above, ran the dumm file generator app a few times (letting it lock up as it went), flashed a new rom a few times as well and after all of that it seems to have worked out all the bad sectors.
Definitely seemed like I was a victim of the beginning of the SDS problem, all due to the fact i had flashed this almost immediately after receiving it and had never updated the baseband.
For those with lock up problems, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133401 and follow that for installing the baseband, then do the dummy file generator etc, i'm back to a phone that works properly
PS - It took a few weeks after for it to find and remove all the problems, remember your actual ROM install could be written to bad sectors so i would definitely recommend after you run the dummy file generator a few times to update your ROM at least once, it was after 2-3 updates mine had completely settled down.
PPS - If the dummy file gen fills up your storage then crashes, just go to app info (drag from launcher is the easiest way to get here) and clear the data, that'll delete all the dummy data
PPPS - The dummy file gen can make your phone run terribly as it gets close to full, be patient, its not necessarily the lock up problem but even if it is you need to let it sort it out itself, restarting will make it worse not better.
Got my Zu a few weeks back. When in stock, this problem occurred randomly and extremely infrequently. Now, the phone is unlocked and rooted and currently in 757 (4.4.2). Now the frequency of the problem has increased many fold. Whats the problem? ... The device just switches off without any notification or alert!! Even when fully charged. I need to switch it back on (with the power button) when I realize it has switched off.
This switch off randomly happens at-least 3-4 times a day. I used the "catlog" app to see if any errors or failures are logged (which may cause the shutdown), but the log entries are so many and so many are generated that they just fly past for me to figure out anything. Is there any specific error that I may have to search for? Any ideas on how to approach the problem and maybe solve it? If it turns out to be a h/w issue, I can send it for service. But I need to ensure that it’s a h/w issue Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@malybru suggested to repost here as well, any ideas are welcome:
Hello,
I have Hisense Sero 7 pro tablet for almost 2 years, and it has served me well until I recently gave it to my 2y daughter, and now it has started freezing I have tried reinstalling different ROMs versions (DOPA 4.4.4, 5.0, etc.) but it seems that stock ROM 4.3 is most stable one. I have also noticed that using the stock rom my Sero Pro freezes when I go to Wifi settings screen, or enter wifi password (for non-stock ROM I have not noticed any particular pattern/reason for freezing). Then the screen goes blank (sometimes light is working, sometimes not), and I need to hold power button for a few seconds for a complete shutdown and then I can turn it on.
Now I have watched a few movies from SD card using standard video player and it was working fine, so I believe this issue is isolated to wifi related activities only. Maybe someone had a similar problem (as I believe this is not limited to those particular tablets). Is there a way to fix it? Thanks!
== WARNING - PIE 9 is not compatible with a known Android OS 8.0 security vulnerability that can be used to achieve ROOT. DO NOT UPDATE to 9.0 if you use this method. See post below for links and info. ==
== Warning: Pie 9.0 screws with the audio through the headphones and speakers! The equalization is different and output volume is quieter than 7/8!! If you bought the G6 for the sound profile, you'll lose it in Pie. Even equalizing manually doesn't bring it in line with 7/8. Other users of other makes have also noticed this Pie problem on Samsungs, etc. ==
You could start with something like this equalization in the music player to try and restore the original profile of the G6.
https://ibb.co/r3YWgbZ
I bought a H873 cheap, $120, off eBay on the last 7.0.
For whatever reason, OTA and LG Bridge couldn't connect to the network to update to 8.0 even though there wasn't any issue with my Win10 laptop on latest updates. I did this to upgrade to 8.0 releases several times, and today, to 9.0.
Finally found a working, easy solution to update the firmware anytime to the latest available when ota and lg bridge don't work that works for 9.0/Pie as well.
Note!
9.0/PIE has the problem where if you turn on COMFORT DISPLAY AND ALWAYS ON DISPLAY, THEN REBOOT THE PHONE WITH BOTH ON, no Always on Display shows up.
To fix this, TURN OFF Comfort Display and Always on Display.
Next, sleep and wake the phone (press the power button).
Turn on AOD, then sleep the phone.
You should now see the aod.
Wake the phone. Turn on comfort display.
Sleep the phone to test aod. Should be ok now.
0. Try LG Bridge first.
This is the Official way where you connect phone to PC, then officially update the firmware using LG consumer software.
https://www.lg.com/us/support/product-help/CT10000025-1438110404543-lg-backup-lg-switch
This also ensures you can see your phone when connected to the PC.
You'll want to click the pop-up notification on the LG G6 to switch the usb mode to file transfer mode instead of just charging.
0. BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!!! BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!
While this should be an easy in-place upgrade from 7/8 to 9, don't expect anything to go 100% perfectly. Backup just in case.
1. Now, if that and OTA didn't work, you'll install Uppercut (a launcher for LG Up to enable compatibility with the G6 and other phones) + LG Up (their firmware flashing program not for consumers).
DOWNLOAD UPPERCUT And LGUP from this thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/uppercut-lgup-loader-g5-variants-t3511295
If LG Bridge is already installed and it sees your phone when connected, you don't need the LG USB drivers download. Otherwise, download this, uppercut and lg up (3 total).
2. Install lg drivers (if needed), then lg up.
DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS!
Microsoft AV thinks Uppercut is a trojan - you definitely do not want important upgrade programs and files to be quarantined during a flash upgrade!
Unzip uppercut anywhere, run it and it'll start lg up.
Connect phone (make sure usb mode is in file transfer mode) and it should show up in lg up.
Now disconnect the phone - you've confirmed it'll show up, but will switch to download mode later.
3. Download the kdz (firmware) file of your choice.
https://lg-firmwares.com
There's a ton of places online for this, and I used this one. Just type in your model number, eg "h873", to look for one.
Now, you know the model number of the firmware MUST match (in general) your phone, so check (settings, general, about phone, hardware version). (Yes, there are other ways to cross flash, etc. See other threads).
For the H873, doesn't matter which carrier - rogers, etc - all identical. Otherwise, you'll generally want the same as your current one (e.g. T-Mobile firmware for T-Mobile phone).
I used the Rogers KDZ file named H87330b_00_OPEN_CA_OP_0917.kdz for Pie (Android 9 Pie 3.03 GiB 2019-10-24).
DOWNLOAD THE MATCHING FIRMWARE FOR YOUR LG G6 MODEL!!! Eg. Look for the H873 firmware if you have a H873. Don't use the wrong one.
4. Switch phone to download mode
Plug a USB cable into your computer (not into the LG G6 yet)
Power down the LG G6.
Press and hold the Volume Up button.
Connect the USB cable to the LG G6.
Continue holding the Volume Up button until it boots into Download Mode.
This should only take less than 5 seconds after you have plugged the phone into the PC while the volume up button is held down.
You'll see a black screen, DOWNLOAD mode, box at the bottom for status.
5. Load the kdz in lg up by RUNNING UPPERCUT to start LG UP!
With phone connected, in file manager mode, and lg up running by starting Uppercut, you'll see the phone listed at top (it'll list the current firmware version on the phone - e.g. H87320h).
In the middle, select UPGRADE from the 4 Process options. This will upgrade your phone firmware like an ota, keeping everything.
SELECT THE UPGRADE option, SELECT THE UPGRADE option (not refurbish, no FOTA Upgrade).
In the bottom, click on the BIN FILE line once, then click the ... Icon that appears at the end of this line to open a file selection window.
Select the kdz file you downloaded in step 3. (The latest PIE firmware you downloaded from LG-Firmwares.com.)
6. Make sure your computer is connected to AC and won't go to sleep (keep moving your mouse every minute, or adjust power settings).
MAKE SURE YOUR PC WON'T GO TO SLEEP!!!!
The Phone should still be in download mode.
Click Start in LG Up and you'll see it sending files. The G6 will show progress as well.
3-4 minutes to load the KDZ file into the phone over a USB 3.0 port (USB 2.0 will be slower).
A few minutes and the new firmware will be loaded, then the phone will auto reboot to update.
Doesn't matter if you disconnect now, but you can keep in plugged in to charge.
When you see the LG G6 logo on the reboot, you can close Uppercut, and restart your Antivirus.
Reboot took 4 minutes on my LG G6 H873.
Finishing system update after getting to the home screen took another minute.
About 2-3 minutes more to feel not so sluggish as it finished up background updating.
...
The downloading and installing of uppercut etc takes a few minutes, kdz depends on server speed, and update just a few minutes, so not hard at all.
Really nothing major to worry about (BACKUP before any firmware update if needed to microsd card), and my H873 is running fine on the latest Pie firmware noted above.
---
(If needed, disconnect the phone from USB, press power button a few times quickly to get into Firmware Download mode - waiting. Then, volume down+power until the phone reboots into normal operation/mode.)
...
Because the main functionality of the phone is typically updated through downloaded apps like Twitter, updating the OS itself only really gets you compatibility with apps that have dropped support for 7 or 8, a few interface gui tweaks, and newer security updates.
Otherwise, like many will discover, 9 is just the usual gui / icon tweak with little else of benefit. No real reason to update unless you need the updated OS for app compatibility. I could run my LG G6 on 7, 8, or 9 and not notice any difference in day-to-day use.
Pie any good?
5/5/20 - Running 9 for a few months. Stable.
4.5~ hrs on my battery, decent knowing that it's an old battery in the phone and runtime isn't far off from 8.0. The SCREEN BRIGHTNESS is the biggest factor - go above 40%~ and the lg quickly burns through the battery much faster, go below and it can run an hour longer or so. The second is the wireless connection. 4G signal isn't so strong and it'll use more battery life.
3C battery monitor app does a good job tracking the charge/use cycles and graphs.
Quickcharge 3.0 is a few minutes slower than pd charging, but about 1:40 hours to a full charge. QC toots it helps lengthen battery life, and since the moto qc charger runs cooler than my Samsung pd charger, I've switched to the qc charging.
Settled into the audio levels difference. Just have to apply EQ + on all frequencies to get the volume up in noisy environments using the speaker. Otherwise, it's fine driving headphones at the normal eq.
Everything's generally stable. No ui issues of note. Settle in and the phone just works.
Very rare issue where the ui gets to the point where it pops up a wait/stop app prompt, but a reboot gets past that. Could be from visiting all those "dangerous" websites since regular browsing doesn't do it. Maybe twice I recall in many months on 9.
So only outstanding point would be if you want the root from the 8.0 vulnerability noted in the other thread, you'll be stuck without root on 9.0.
Otherwise, stable and good enough to run 9.0 daily.
Old post follows.....
No improvements in functionality that I can find. Basically the same experience as oreo.
For those that really need two Facebook accounts at the same time, pie does let you install two Facebook, skype, line, etc apps independent of each other. Can't think of any good reason or use.
Only big exception is no way to force location top use ONLY gps, no a-gps. This means it locks faster, but can waste power in low cell connection areas trying to connect to towers for a-gps info. Plus, security risk as it gives the government one more way to constantly track you.
Initial surfing showed it to be eating more battery, but now, a few days later with the system settled in, looking better than 8.0. Maybe 4-5 hours on 8.0, 5-6 hours on 9.0. Need to try it out longer to see of this holds up.
I've got everything possible turned off - unused apps disabled, sync off, gps, bt, wifi, nfc off - only auto brightness and cellular on and always on display on except 8 hours at night. Standby at night is as good as oreo as configured - practically 0% change in battery life as I've experienced with Oreo , too.
Another annoyance is the headphone volume especially when turned to the lowest sounds quieter than in Oreo. In Oreo, I simply used a custom equalizer setting to go even quieter, but now, I have to use a higher volume at night. Hope this doesn't mean I have to use a custom volume setting to go louder art the high end outdoors.
A gui annoyance is the home touch button bar at the bottom has lost its white on black theme. Only light gray on white and very light shades of a few colors. Plus, the bar color sometimes changes to the theme of the app (like red with opera browser) making it far more annoying than it should be. This should stay the same color regardless of app, but broken in Pie.
The square button in the bottom toolbar (non-gesture gui) used to switch between the current and prior used app quickly, but in 9.0 it's not reliable and often returns to the same app. Bad.
Rotation stutters. If you rotate the phone past 45 degrees than back quickly before it switches to landscape mode, especially with the keyboard visible, you can see the gui lag and stutter as it tries to cancel the rotation.
They fixed the translucency on the clock widget, adjustable, so you can read it when placed over photo backgrounds - e.g. Pure white or black solid color rather than translucent. But, they don't let you adjust it for the weather widget!??
To get the qslide calculator, you still need to install it on your own. https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/help/qslide-calculator-t3596931/amp/
When selecting text and adjusting the selection range, a tiny magnifier box appears so you can see what letters you are selecting. But, it doesn't show the selection point with a cursor like Oreo, only highlights the selected text - slower.

So, a lot of work to backup, download, prep lgup and uppercut, simply to update it to 9 with no obvious changes to the camera and other lg apps.
This is because Most of the Functionality comes from the apps you download, which comes from the Google Play Store. Thus, 8 or 9, the apps work the same and you get the same updated functionality (maps. Facebook. Etc) regardless.
Seriously, from 7 to 8 to 9, it still works and looks and acts the same basically and no real incentive to keep updating unless you'd like marginally better security (old exploits patched).
BUT, lg is terrible at frequent updates, once every 4-6 months, which means your exposed to new exploits for 4-6 months even on pie. Might as well run a good antivirus like bitdefender to catch new viruses than to depend on lg for timely os updates.
The ONLY good reason to update otherwise is to run apps that have dropped support for 7 or 8. Else, I could honestly run on 7 or 8 today and not notice any benefits from upgrading to 9.

Notice that 4.4-5.1 still run 1 of 5 android devices in active use! Even Facebook and Messenger support installation on 4.4, so I wouldn't worry about being on an older OS for years to come.
Thank you for this detailed guide. My friend has tried using uppercut but it reports that we insert a Metadata key.
We are quite surprised by such an error.

NOTE - The root method using the vulnerability exposed by CVE-2019-2215 WILL NOT WORK in PIE 9.0. Those who want root and are using this method SHOULD NOT UPGRADE TO PIE!
...
Also, due to changes in Android 9+ by stupid Google, programs such as 3C Battery Monitor won't be able to access correct battery statistics without rooting + workarounds (see 3C xda thread).
Thanks for this useful summary. Pie was just released in my region (30c), but based on your observations I think I'll pass. Seems like a downgrade.
Major upgrades tend to slow down old devices anyway
Correct. No significant changes of note in 9 thus far that I've noticed worth the trouble after months of use. Just moving things around, theme and gui changes. LG really isn't updating security fast either, so 9 isn't better in this regard.
Thanks, it worked on my LG G6 (
LGH870_ORI)
I now have Pie!
Error "kdz file is invalid"
i am using lg g6 H-87320h model. and when i try to flash file as described above it shows error "kdz file is invalid".
firmware trying to flash is "H87330b_00_OPEN_CA_OP_0917".
eddited :
file was corrupted somehow. downloaded again and it went all fine
Just to make sure, this method only work for G6 phones that have the official android Pie already, right? I mean, there is many G6 H870 versions that don't have official Pie yet.
This method should work fine to update a lg g6 on official 7 or 8 to 9.
The same method works if you want to update 7 to 8, or 8 to 9, too.
....
For my H873, I saw numerous firmwares on lg-firmwares.com for various Canadian carriers like Rogers.
You'll want to double-check, but I read somewhere that as long as the model is the same (h873), doesn't matter which carrier's H873 firmware you flash. They all work.
...
From this, but double check with experienced xda folks,
Lg-firmwares.com has a long list of countries under H870. I'd assume, but double check, any of them can update a H870 to 9.0.
The differences would be language, pre-installed apps, and carrier customizations.
I'm on Android 8. I've updated my LG G6 a couple of times using the above method. Now, whenever I power off the phone and then hold the UP button and put USB cable in, it just goes to the battery animation and that's it. I've tried numerous times and even reset the phone, but can't get it to .
I'm on 8.0.0 Feb 1 , 2019 build. H87320i. Can anyone help me update to version 9? Thanks.
That's weird.
Try holding the power down 5-10 seconds until the phone powers off.
Then follow the steps.
....
Try a different usb cable and port.
Try a different computer.
Otherwise, ask around xda forums. That's a weird problem.

Hey, yah that's really weird. I think you should try changing your cable with a good one, and the USB port change too.
Because it doesn't matter what firmware version you are al LG devices boot into bootloader mode by holding up the volume up key + connecting the USB cable.
That's the standard behaviour of all thr custom roms on all devices i ever had, when charging in soft - off mode. (My G6 is still running stock).
The kernel has to be booted for charging and in these cases will keep running after unplugging.
This shouldn't happen if the phone is already in Dowmload or Fastboot Mode prior to attaching it.
On some devices(i never did it with rhe G6) it's necessary to hold a button while attaching the usb cable. Then you probably must try a different usb port or even pc. It should work best with a Usb 2.0 port at 0,5 amperes, w/o a charging mode for phones (2amps and more).
A black usb port, none of the blue(standard usb3), yellow and red ones.
(as the G6 boots really long before starting to charge in soft-off mode, i suspect that it boots the whole system instead of only the kernel, just like IOS devices, that would be rather special for Android. And it hasn't even the Project Treble architecture, where this may be common)
Hi everyone and thanks a lot for your works !
I have a lg g6 h870 V20H-EUR-XX. It is a stock rom, installed with twrp and rooted with magisk.
