[Q] Help Needed - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon (SCH-I545) with stock lollipop (5.0.1). I tried to root my device. I was unsuccessful, then I heard about Kingroot. I rooted with Kingroot and verified root with the Root Checker app. Next I tried to install a custom recovery. I downloaded Clockwork Mods as this is what I used in the past. I flashed a custom recovery from the Clockwork mod app and I assumed the custom recovery was installed.
[Problem] Whenever I try to boot into the custom recovery I get an error stating "NO COMMAND", then I get sent to the Android recovery screen. Any suggestions?

You can't have a custom recovery unless you have an MDK bootloader.

Thank you for the info. I will get on that straight away. I appreciate the assistance.

You cannot unlock the bootloader, or downgrade. You are stuck with OC1, with only root. No ROMs will be available.
No way to get back to MDK. You have root w/ kingroot with 0C1

Just a few days ago people were saying you will not be able to root OTA 5.01. So I wouldn't give up hope that the Dev's may find a way to use Safestrap or some other method to install a custom ROM. I personally do not care either way. My S4 is almost a year and a half old and I never installed a custom ROM on it. I only root my phone to use certain root required apps. The S4 is somewhat aging as these devices go. There are already 2 newer models so lets hope for those who are still looking for recoveries and ROMs that the Dev's will not abandon it just yet.

[Q] Installing TWRP on jfltevzw 4.4.2 (NC5)

I was one of the idiots that accidentally upgraded to the newest firmware when it first came out. My device is totally rooted, but I've been reading that I'm required to use things such as SafeStrap or Loki to install custom roms. I'm not sure if this is still the case as its been months since this was discovered. I've been trying to search the forums extensively for a fix, but I've been unable to find one. One thing I came across: here seems to be a very simple way to install TWRP on the Galaxy S4, however, I don't wan to run the risk of bricking my phone and being SOL because I have ****ty firmware and no way to custom recover my phone.
Point blank, would I be able to install TWRP manager via GooManager given that I've updated to NC5? Or even if not, what are my options for custom recovery/roms? End game, I want to walk away with 5.0.1 GPE or Cyanogenmod 12. Hopefully.
I'd really appreciate any and all help. Attached is a screenshot of my phone information.

Once you updated to anything past MDK there's no going back . Safestrap is the only option to install Touchwiz ROMS.

Damn! That's what I figured. I followed [this guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLHZfPwLkPM) and installed the SafeStrap APK, but stopped at the "install recovery" step. I've been reading that this can soft brick your phone. Do you have any input? Is it safe to do? If it does brick my phone will I be able to factory reset with Odin?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm a bit of a noob.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
Well, I decided to go ahead with it. It worked fine. I rebooted to SafeStrap and went right to do a backup. It failed. I tried to reboot into my stock rom, and it was 0MB. I really might blow up Verizon HQ.

I never used SafeStrap so I doubt I will be much help. But once you rebooted your stock ROM is no longer there? Might have to just flash a stock image via ODIN and try again. Verizon isn't going to help you either with modding your phone, XDA is the place to be.
Has there been anything new since this thread was posted or is it impossible still?

Sorry buddy you're SOL

If you are rooted use a terminal editor app and type:
getprop ro.bootloader
If it says anything other than I545VRUAMDK your only choice is SafeStrap.
That means if you bought an S4 and it came with MK1, NC5, NK1, or anything other than MDK you cannot flash a custom recovery. The same applies if you took an OTA from VZW. This has been stated 1000's of times here.
Hint:
Look on the box that your S4 came in and read the last three characters where it says what build the phone has.

Keep checking up on SS they are working on the ability to also use custom kernels on top which would make it essentially as efficient as a custom recovery, with some storage loss.

***Make sure you are using the correct version of safestrap for your current baseband
another good app from the google play store to download is samsung info
I have used safestrap in the past as I was in the same scenario as you. I currently now have a MDK phone

How come they haven't been able to unlock the bootloader when only the build version is changing......
There should have been an exploit awhile ago....and why haven't they made an odin option for MDK yet?

The exploit was weeded out after MDK
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
The bootloader was never "unlocked" on MDK, there was just an exploit available that allowed the installation of a custom recovery. That exploit was closed in the first update from MDK and a new one has not been discovered. The bootloader itself has some pretty strong encryption so it may never be unlocked.

Assistance needed with install Custom Recovery

I am trying to install CWM so I can run Cyanogen like I used to before lollipop came out and locked me out. I am using a rooted sch-i545 via kingroot, and CWM claims to have installed. However, I cannot get cyanogen to install (Signature authentication failed) or something along those lines. Any idea how I can get past this and get Cyanogen to install?

If you had to root via KingRoot then your bootloader is locked and have no recovery option.
Only flashfire is what you can use and currently you only have stock OC1/deodex or stang5litre OC1 rom to choose from.
That's too bad. Annoying Samsung... What do you recommend for a clean android experience?

Stang5litre rom just got on version 2 it is nice and smooth.
No problems battery life is about average for lollipop but not much can be done about that except for greenify and whatnot.
you can check out the changelogs here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/stang5litre-ediition-5-0-t3132555
Thanks for the reply. Do you ever presume we will get a full root back? I would like the ability to take this phone over sees where I can buy any such sim card and it will just work. I don't suspect I could do that with just a Odex rom could I?

The device is sim unlocked of of the box so any other sim should work no problem.

Update, reroot, etc.??

I really did not know what to title this, here goes:
I have a Verizon SGS 4 (SCH-I545), running stock 4.4.2, no custom recovery (am currently running the stock recovery B.S.), bootloader I545VRUFNK4, build ID KOT49H.I545VRUFNK4, release date 4/26/13 & have been rooted with KingRoot V. 4.8.0135 and is unlocked (haven't really any idea what that means, upon boot-up it shows an unlocked lock icon and says CUSTOM, the dealer I bought it from, just a shop where they buy & sell new/used phones, said that it is unlocked for use on any carrier I want.)
Now I don't know how important, if at all, all of that is but I want to update to the most up-to-date OS, reroot & maybe start flashing new custom roms.
The problem is I don't have access to a computer without install restrictions, meaning I can download things but I can't install them without admin name & password trying it directly from the settings (Settings/More/Software update) it keeps saying service unavailable...
I'm lost, is there any way to update via stock recovery or install a custom recovery (TWRP/CWM) via stock recovery or a root app?
I would suggest you to upgrade your phone with a custom rom, elseway if you do it with any official update your bootloader will be upgraded and there are a lot of cons with that.
We cannot have TWRP, CWM or other recovery (thanks to the bootloader), so the best you can do it's getting SafeStrap and then flash any of these custom roms:
stang5litre Ediition 5.0
Albe95 S6 FULL PORT 4.7
Albe95 ASTRA v2 Note 5 PORT
(I listed those because you want to update your phone). You can find SafeStrap and the roms in Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4 Android Development sub-forum
SafeStrap must not be compatible with my phone cause I tried to use it multiple times but it is not installing any recovery, I'm still stuck on stock recovery.

I'm in the same bootloader so you should be able to install it, you just need SuperSU as your superuser app and busybox
Busybox, ya, I have it and ran it but KingRoot installed it's own supersu thing and it won't let me switch, if there'sa way to switch to supersu from the Play store, how?
The recovery is being overwritten by a script in the system. The title of the file is..
Install.recovery.sh
Rename this file with adding ".bak" then reinstall safestrap

I searched Root Explorer but have no idea where this is found, maybe you could point me in the right direction.
Ok, my phone's settings say I545VRUFNK1 for baseband but the build number says KOT49H.I545VRUFNK4 and Samsung Smart Switch comes up with FNK4 (VZW)! It is a Verizon SCH-I545 but how can I update it without Smart Switch cause it keeps saying its up to date?
Can I use Odin and what recovery would I use with Odin?

Help with buying

I'm thinking about buying a used verizon galaxy s4 off of amazon if it comes with pl1 can it be downgraded back to of1 if not can pl1 be rooted?
I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy on PL1 and I was able to root it with KingoRoot. I rooted it with KingoRoot, then I immediately uninstalled KingoRoot and SuperUser (Which KingoRoot installs) and then installed SuperSU and successfully updated the binaries.
You can, however, downgrade to OF1 using Odin. However, I simply stuck with PL1 because I was still able to root it. So if you are satisfied with just regular root, you can do that on PL1 and easily get SuperSU installed using the method I mentioned.

However, OC1 is the rare one I believe. You cannot downgrade from PL1 to OC1. Apparently if you had OC1, there is an exploit that allow you to install a custom recovery. You cannot do that on PL1 because they locked down the bootloader even more tightly.

Yikes! That's embarrassing! Yeah, haha MDK! I even actually thought it was OF1 at first, and edited it to another incorrect baseband. I'll just remove that paragraph since it's not really even pertinent anyway.
And here is the post I wrote after testing the different basebands to see if they'd flash: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71418457&postcount=67. I went back and forth a few times.
