HTC Desire 626s - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I go about trying to achieve root for this device? I have unlocked my bootloader succesfully using the htc dev website.
Do I need to go about trying to port a custom recovery? With this being such a new phone I cannot even find the stock firmware

I picked up this phone for my bride last night. I'd love to root and debloat.
As for the bootloader, I've watched a YouTube video for the htc one, is it fairly easy?
Did you try kingo or kinguser?

I have unlocked the bootloader which was extremely easy via HTC's site. :good:
But, I haven't been able to root the phone via Kingo or Kinguser.... From what I understand if we are able to get the stock recovery.img from the 626s then we can build a CWM recovery zip to flash. Once CWM is the recovery then we can flash SuperSU which will give us root access?
I am fairly newb but I believe the above process would be correct?

Which phone guide did you use for the bootloader unlock? My recovery doesn't have a fastboot option so the Desire * tutorial and the "other supported devices" wouldn't work.

In the guide that says to use the fastboot option is incorrect for this device. I believe I was able to perform the commands while in the download mode. Let me know if that works for you :good:

I need help unlocking the bootloader for the 626s HTC from the metropcs network.
i have download and tried the steps from the htc dev website and seem to not have any luck only errors.
i do have the htc sync manager installed. and the current drivers needed for the fastboot and adb files included.
should i be doing something wrong or how about a step by step tutorial specified for the HTC 626s .
THANKS .

I was stuck too, then I found a nice little guide on youtube. Look up "How to unlock the bootloader on the HTC Desire 510 (or any htc phone)" (sorry, I can't post links yet). The guy's a bit more specific than the dev site is. The only difference between the phone used in that guide and the 626s is that you don't need to go into fastboot and can stay in download mode.
Also, make sure to enable OEM unlocking in the developer options. I didn't know I had to do this and it slipped me up at first. Follow the steps and you should be fine :good:

Anyone have any luck rooting yet? Kingo, Towelroot, and Kingroot all failed for me, which is strange because the towelroot site says "should support all phones < jun 3 2014." Guess it's wrong

I haven't had any luck either. Tried ALL day long yesterday .

If it wasn't for that tip of yours I would've still been stuck on 'download mode' trying to find the fastboot button. With all the info I was able to compile I was able to put together a guide which I plan on making as a post sometime soon

To be quite honest... Im not a HTC fan... I stay with LGs (im on stylo) but I got it for my daughter (Desire626s)... So far she loves it... No complaints @ all so far... Slick, lite,a good phone ... And she's a teen.. You knw what i mean... Now no root yet... Stock.. She haven't asked me for tether yet....So.. Still waiting for a good clean and safe root...

The 626s is a great phone - especially for the price. Paid $80 for it (after rebate) from MetroPCS.
Also - you can use it as a hotspot as-is - no root needed - functionality is included for free - at least with MetroPCS (I have the $40/month plan - unlimited everything - first 2GB of data at full 4G LTE speeds).
Really impressed with this phone. Like mentioned, no root yet, but I honestly haven't missed it - with it's implementation of Android 5.1, it already does everything most people would need to do. Root would be nice to remove some of the bloatware though.

The option to boot to fastboot is missing from my Metro PCS 626s. When I hold volume down and power, the phone boots to download mode. The only options are
system info
show barcode
reboot to bootloader
reboot to download mode
reboot
power down
Allow OEM unlocking is checked in developer options also. The Fastboot option is also missing when I boot to bootloader.

How do I root it? Can someone link a program that is easy to use, and I want to install that buttsmooth rom that's on the development section the jellybean one. But is talks about s on and I'm confused, please im new to all this.
You must first unlock the boot loader. There is a complete guide in dev section. Do a quick search its on first or second page. I just unlocked boot loader, rooted and s-off plus sim unlocked mine. Its easy if you READ the steps carefully .

You need to get hasoon's AIO tool, not the S-OFF one, but the other one. That tool will guide you into unlocking your bootloader.
Rooting steps: Unlock bootloader, install recovery, then flash superuser.
Keep in mind that unlocking bootloader will wipe everything, so backup anything you want to keep.
Also, what is this 'butt smooth' rom you speak of?

You can only really backup your apps via titanium back up or similar app from the play store, and move anything on the phone memory to your sd card.

Project Butter. Not buttery smooth
Now back to the OP's question, if you want to backup sms, i recommend SMS Backup & Restore, it's an excellent app.
Also, to install that rom, you need to unlock the bootloader first, install a custom recovery, 4EXT is recommended, and then root the device. After doing that, ROM installation is a bit different if you are running GB rom currently, or ICS rom. We need that info before you try to flash that ROM
im running the ics update i just exported my contacts to the sd card thats all i really care about haha, so im about to go into dev and find that program yall are talking about can yall be here for me after every step please

You don't need the sdk, hasoon's tool has all the required files for what you need to get done, simply choose the unlock bootloader option and follow all steps to get it done, hasoon's tool can get the token and unlock the bootloader for you though.
so all i do is register? and when i click get token id do i need to be in debug mode?

Yes, all you need to do is register, choose unlock bootloader, accept all the requirements, scroll all the way to the bottom to where it says token id, hit the get token id in hasoon's took, mark and copy it, paste it in the box on the website and submit.
Yes, enable debugging and leave it on, you're gonna need it on to do everything you need to do.
okay i enabled usb debug mode already registered now about to click the token thing

[Q] How to Reroot after OTA update to HTC EVO 4g let

Hi Everyone,
I accidentally hit the OTA update (software ver. 1.22.651.3 710RD) for my rooted HTC EVO 4G LTE phone (whoops!). I have SuperSU Pro with Survival Mode activated but that didn't work. I never installed special ROMs and primarily used ROOT for Tethering.
At any rate, my root is now gone and I can't find any discussions about how to re-root after an OTA update. I don't want to screw up my phone any further since it seems to be working ok otherwise.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

You'll have to do the HTCDev unlock method (easiest way is through RegawMod). That's the only way right now.

actually the best way is htc dev using the adb tools mini sdk, regawmod has not been fixed and there are a lot of users complaining that they get stuck. To me it only takes a little common sense to solve 90% of the issues using regawmod but some people need their hands held and that thread is slowly boiling down to the worlds most repetitive support desk.
HTC Dev Unlock
Requirements
HTC Drivers
ADB Tools Mini SDK
Setup
Install HTC Drivers if necessary
Extract ADB Tools anywhere, doesnt matter
Open ADB Tools and hold shift+right click, select open command window here
In phone settings, enable usb debugging and disable fasboot
Connect the phone to pc
Steps
In the command window type adb start-server
Next type adb reboot bootloader
Select fastboot
Type fastboot devices to make sure you are connected
Type fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Right click and select mark, click and drag from the top arrows to the bottom arrows and make sure not to highlight any empty spaces as this will confuse the website, right click and it will be saved to clipboard
Now go to HTC Dev and if you don't already have an account, sign up for it
Go to unlock bootloader and select other supported models and accept the agreements
Skip the steps until you get the to token submit window and paste the token you copied earlier and submit.
Go to your email and download the unlock_bin code
Put the code in the ADB Tools folder
Type fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
When the phone prompt comes up to unlock bootloader hit yes, now you are unlocked, re-enable usb debugging and disable fastboot
Type adb reboot bootloader
Type fastboot devices to make sure phone connected
Type fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-jewel.img
Type erase cache
Reboot phone and you will have unlock and recovery, all thats missing is to restart phone in bootloader and select recovery to flash a rom. Wipe Dalvik, cache, Factory reset, system and then install the rom. If it doesn't boot, extract the boot.img from the rom and put it in the adb folder and in fastboot type fastboot flash boot boot.img and reboot

Well, after getting the phone going and attempting to use programs with root privileges, it seems that the rooting process didnt work. All the steps went just fine until I got to the last one and it said to "wipe cashe" when I typed that in it didnt work, so I just skipped that step and rebooted the phone.
Is that what caused the root to not take to the phone?

Also tried this last night. I plug my phone in, hit the ROOT button and nothing happens. I actually get a "not responding" on the software. My phone does not reboot into recovery. Does the HBOOT version matter with this? I am v1.19
Sorry, I am still learning all these terms. Not exactly sure what effects what.
I rooted and put Cyanogenmod on my OG EVO and never had this much trouble.
FYI: I was rooted before doing the latest OTA update. So I still have a Super user icon but if I click it it cant update the binary (because I am no longer rooted)...I read somewhere that people said to do a factory reset then try this rooting method again, because of old junk files left behind on the phone. This true?
Does this work on hboot 1.19?

If I want to completely update my phone (Android 4.0.3, Soft ver 1.22.651, baseband 1.02 because I pretty much got the phone the phone in December and immediately rooted it), will this method work? I'd really like to get Mean Rom but obviously, I'm in need of a few updates and I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to get there. It seems like doing all the official updates and then re-rooting and then installing MR would be the simplest way to do it buuuuut better to ask and be wrong and pointed in the right direction than screw everything up.

Did you guys rename the image file you downloaded to "recovery.img"?
Also, you're not trying to flash it with the phone turned on, are you? USB debugging has no bearing on fastboot mode... Make sure you're in fastboot mode and not bootloader mode also.
i double checked everything. I am in usb fastboot mode , cable connected to phone etc. it just doesnt work.. giving me the error message as before.

I have an ATT phone but currently living in Jamaica...I've had this phone for close to 2weeks now but im getting frustrated with all the att bloatware pre-installed..i would also like to tether using the phone but instead have to b using pdanet. i have already unlocked bootloader on htcdev following ur guidelines and i have all the correct htc drivers installed. upon looking through ur threads about the desire 610 i came across 1 person who has the same ATT phone and followed ur rooting guide but now has posted pics of their screen with icons to the left and the borders bigger...are u working on a new root or better yet, is there a way to enable tethering or uninstall the att bloatware without rooting the phone bcuz thats all i really want to do in the first place...and before i forget, i dont see an option to update the phone without using ATT, does this mean that i cant update to newer versions of kit kat knowing that im in jamaica... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...
I'm not certain yet. Wait until I get a one click solution for you, and we'll see if it's something that's easily fixed. The root method is about as good as it's going to get. There's no exploit needed, so it's unlikely one will ever be created that will work.
try adding ( .img ) at the end so recovery.img.img it looks like, change to recovery.img then add another .img at the end.. worked for me isk why.. or use kingroot to root after bootloader unlocked. Sorry to add to old thread.

Nope you are not. Check out Sunshine. It will take will unlock the bootloader and get you S off. You take care of the rest. I was completely stock on the sense 6 OTA when I found out about and used Sunshine. Sunshine does cost $25 to use, but for me, it was worth it.
Sounds promising. Thanks. I'm googling now.

Thanks for the advice. I googled SunShine, paid my $25, ran the app and BOOM!!! Unlocked! S-Off! and Root. All I had to do was fastboot flash the unofficial verizon 2.8.0.0 twrp recovery (that confused me for a few hours as well, I was getting errors with the official), install supersu and update the binaries and that was it. I'm chillin on some cyanogenmod now and loving it.

Glad it went easy for you. I have not put a custom rom on mine yet. I am considering it, but doing something stupid and borking a phone is not the same as borking a tablet. The tablet can sit until I can figure out what I did wrong. I cant do that with my main line of communications.

Sunshine might work. Google it. You could flash an older rom if your unlocked.

You can't flash anything while you are S-ON, bootloader locked, and you can't unlock the bootloader or get S-OFF without Sunshine. Once you are bootloader unlocked and S-OFF, you flash a custom recovery like TWRP so you can gain root and you can (if you choose) flash a custom ROM or other modifications. For the Verizon One Max, Sunshine is the only alternative.
It sounds like you haven't yet looked at other threads here to learn the difference between booting to bootloader, booting to recovery or booting to system, or what S-ON/S-OFF means, or what adb and fastboot are for. You should know all of those things before you wade in and accidentally brick your One Max.
There aren't a lot of devs still working on the device, but there are lots of threads in this forum and elsewhere on xda that will tell you what you need to know. "Search" is your friend.

I have looked at other threads and understand s-off, boot loader on/off, and stuff. What I don't understand, is how to install the custom recovery. I've seen tutorials for how to install custom recovery on the HTC one m7 but none for the one max. I'm not sure if there's a difference. Most of the threads I've seen simply say that I need sunshine, which I have installed on my phone but I'm trying to gather all the information I need on how to install a custom Rom before pulling the trigger and forking out $25.

Hey Captain! Had to switch to AT&T for work so I'm here now. I want to root, but I'm sure there will be a bevy of updates in the near future, so I was wondering if you know if the stock AT&T M9 Recovery is available or even RUU?
I tried using those instructions, but there is no fastboot option in when I reboot using the Volume Down / Power button. Trying adb reboot fastboot just reboots the phone.

Fastboot works in Download mode. That's where you need to be.
OK I can get to download mode with
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices returns my device serial number
But when I use fastboot oem get_identifier_token I get an error:
C:\fastboot>fastboot oem get_identifier_token
...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
finished. total time: 0.004s
When booted into bootloader I get this on the screen:
Software Status Official
LOCKED
S-ON
REBOOT
REBOOT TO BOOTLOADER
BOOT TO DOWNLOAD MODE
BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE
POWER DOWN
OK I was able to get the bootloader unlocked and rooted. My problem was trying to use Windows. When my device was connected, and I tried adb devices, it would list my device 3 times. Therefore I had problems using any adb commands, so I decided to use Fedora Linux.
First time I was using the wrong mode, bootloader, instead of download. Then when I did get to download, I was getting <Waiting for Device> I figured I probably needed to use sudo. Once I did that, the unlock process worked, and was able to install root afterwards.
Now what I need to know, is there a way to easily remove that AT&T tattoo on the back of the phone?
i don't think its possible to get root on the M9 at&t until we get S-OFF

Not true, I have an AT&T M9 and was able to root using the instructions.
I'm rooted and running LeeDroid rom from the international m9 thread.

It doesn't. We need s-off to change the CID and flash other ruu's, such as the dev edition ruu. I believe we need s-off to completely return to stock(removing the tampered flag).

Does everything work? I've unlocked the bootloader but have not installed twrp out of fear over messing something up and not being able to update / receive necessary future updates.

Yes everything appears to be working fine. I haven't had any problems in the week I've had the phone. As long as you flash the newest twrp beta(I'm using 2.8.6.3) and make a backup of your stock system before flashing any mods, then you should be able to return to stock without any problems.

Thanks for the link. I read through the first two posts and have a question. Why is it so important to receive OTA update? I thought after rooting, custom recovery, and installed custom rom, you just update (manually flash) the custom rom's new updates as they come out. And the versions of the custom rom is usually based on the new official OTA release anyways no?

I think the OTA file needs to be modified so it can be flashed by a custom recovery.
