Hi,
I've got the Sony xperia M4 Aqua for a week now - so far so good .. but ..
the LED notification is not soo well adjusted (I think), because:
flashing for a blink of an eye (around 200 Millisecs) and then off for over 5000 Millisecs - its hard to see and u have to wait quite long for the next flash
so I would like to change this to, e.g. 2000 Millisecs on an 2000 Millisecs off .. I guess its not possible without an extra app, so I tried LED Blinker Pro (is it ok to mention apps? Which I used on my old phone)
the settings for the different colors on different notifications works, but the settings for the flash intervall doesnt do anything to the LED
anybody else experience this or has an other app which does the job?
secondly - missed calls:
At the moment I dont get a single sign that I missed a call. I dont get a message on the lockscreen or the notification bar!
Where can I put the notification on?
Thanks
Nobody else annoyed about that short blinking behavior?
Yeah I was searching for an answer for a long time but I gave up, no app could change the flashing frequency and default settings make the led light useless to me. Someone has any ideas?

did u just search for an app or did u try some apps? and if u tried, which have u tried?
there are apps that are supposed to be able to change the flashing frequency, like the mentioned LED Blinker, but on our M4 aqua it doesnt seem to work
I tried led blinker, light flow and light manager, eveything worked beside this freaking flashing. I really lost hope but I cant give up cause this drives me crazy, maybe root will help?

these 3 apps I tried too. no change in flashing behaviour contacted LED Blinker Support, but no tipp worked for the M4 and it seems too less people complain about it, so the developer doesnt do a research by now
hoping new firmware or root will do the trick
...
over two months later, but still nothing changed
maybe if more people complain / react e.g. in this thread, the developer of the apps will see that there is need to do sth
this thread has over 1.300 views, so it seems to border more then just two or three people ...
i'd like to start a voting, but unfortanetly afterwards a thread is open, its not possible to add a voting, or is it?
Well, sometimes I don´t like the short flashes, too. But overally, would you like your LED to flash like a police car? You can catch that blink if you look at your phone for less than 5 sec, what more do you want?
Therefore, I like its behaviour and I do not think it would be changeable without root, or maybe with it. Who knows.

Now that we have root access, someone tried methods involving rooting? This led notification needs change.
to be accurate its off for 6 seconds and flashes so shortly, that it is hard to recognize the color ..
of course I dont want a "stroboscope flashing" :silly: ! But a shorter off-time and a longer on-time, e.g. 2 secs on - 2 secs off, would be very helpfull ..
which timing anybody prefers its up to him (4 secs on - 1 sec off, or 10 secs on - 3 secs off - thats not the point) .. the point is, that it is not changeable .. and with other phones its possible and I think the apps don't even require root on other phones to work, correct me if i'm wrong.
Hi,
I got a rooted M4 Aqua and I tried about 10 different apps to get this changed, but no luck.
I think that the notification led is a very helpful tool. Now 6 seconds (even 5) to check, it's not ideal or practical at all (when you're driving, walking). Plus it blinks for 200ms or so which makes it very . This makes the users forget about the notification led and just switch the screen on. I see there's a lot of views on this but nothing changes.
I'm going to try a custom ROM because this Sony firmware is getting on my nerves. Such a good phone and the software is really making it have bad reputation.

Anything new? I didn't even find solution from xposed modules.
Hey, this issue is a real problem for me. Any progress been made on this? I'm within my 14 day return period for my M4, and I'm almost considering switching it for something else just because of this.
I agree with this. Had a Xperia SP before and it was like a christmas tree but usefull.
Not really concerned about the frequency of the led light. Mine doesnt even flash at all. It would turn on when charging or when the bettery is low. But thats about it. installing 3rd party apps might consume my battery faster so i leave it as it is.
As of today the light no longer even blinks. It is only functional as a charging indicator. The notification LED option is still enabled in Settings > Sound & Notification. I'm probably going to switch the M4 for a C4. I'm definitely not to the point of losing faith in Sony yet though, despite the additional heat issues which are another story.

I think I have figured out a setup for tasker to make the notification light blink longer than 5 minutes. The setup that is currently working for me is to use tasker with the Locale Execute Plug-in. I followed DomSim's guide to get Locale Execute to handle LED blinking. You can setup solid/blinking lights using that guide. I just chose a generic green blinking light for all notifications. I also chose to shut off led notifications under settings-display, though I don't know if it would conflict in any way.
In tasker,
1) Create new profile
2) First context - choose Event, UI, Notification, Done
3) Task Selection - choose New Task, click +, Plugin, Execute, Edit, type lines from DomSim's thread ie
Code:
For green led blink,
@! echo 1 > sys/devices/platform/leds-pm8058/leds/green/blink
4)Click Done and test until it gets root permission (took several times until it happened)
4) click +, Tasker, Wait 5 minutes, Done
5) click +, Tasker, Goto Action, 1, add an if then statement so it only repeats if the notification is not cleared. Done
6) click Done and Apply
So far it's worked to keep my led flashing on notifications for longer than 5 minutes. I'm sure it'll affect battery life some, but I don't know how much. You could make it more complex and have different color (red or green) and solid/flash for different events like missed call, sms, etc. using tasker and replacing Notification in step 2 with whatever you want. Also, Locale Execute Plug-in may not be needed as tasker has the ability to flash the LED as well, but I could not get it to work in the past...but that was before I thought of using an infinite loop. It will save some typing if you don't need Locale Execute Plug-in .
original post
So now that we have root and s-off, is there something that can be changed to make it so the notification light will keep flashing until the notification is dismissed? It shuts off after about 5 minutes as it is now, which defeats its purpose IMO. I've tried using many of the LED controller programs, and none of them work reliably for notifications even with root. I've also tried setting up profiles in tasker to blink the led, but it still shuts off after 5 minutes.
Is this 'feature' in the kernel or some other part of HTC's software? I'd love for a mod/program to make it blink until the notification is dismissed or the battery is dead .

With tasker are you able to use different colors?
As for notification, someone would have to modify the framework-res I believe.

Nobody has any other ideas? If someone has it working with tasker or any other program, go ahead and post how you did it.
I guess I should title the thread "Get a Photon!" so I could get pages and pages of replies .
I've been using Light Flow, it's the best app I've found so far but I haven't tried a whole lot to be honest. It works pretty decent, though like you said not 100% reliable. You can also adjust the vibrate rate/pattern which I love.
I've come from a Blackberry, the notification LED on those are very big, very bright and multiple color selections, where the EVO 3D has 3, green, red and a deep orange. I've missed many a different notifications on my EVO 3D, specially text messages. I'll walk out of the room, come back and see no blinking light, then check my phone like 30 minutes later and notice I had a text message sitting for 30+ minutes without even knowing.
Not only is shutting the light off after 5 minutes a terrible idea, like you said pretty much defeats the purpose but the notifications not showing while charging due to the light staying constantly red is a terrible design decision if you ask me.
Updated the OP with some tasker settings that seem to be working (so far).
A total noob with Tasker here, what exactly do I put for the IF statement in step 5?
Thanks

I actually never could get tasker to work right. I got it to keep the LED on until dismissed, but the loop caused the phone to never go to sleep and ate through battery faster. If your interested, I've implemented a fix at the kernel level (thanks to joe85) for 2.3.4 Sense ROMs. You can find the thread here. It's been the only reliable fix for me.

Hi all!
I bought the xperia u yesterday and there seems to be a problem somewhere (i wish it's not a hardware kind).
The small notification LED next to the front camera IS working but the light isn't that bright. I did the test run, the LED is working but the light is just weak
What should i do?
This is my main issue with the phone next to the small internal memory. My X10 mini pro's led is easily noticable from a distance but with this one you actually have to be at 50cm or closer to be able to see it. Makes the fact that the led bar can't be used for notifications even more annoying.
I think the code/SDK or whatever which controls the ledbar is available to developers, the app XSLights can already mess with it a bit, so we can only hope someone finds a way to allow the ledbar to be used for notifications. Maybe via a Tasker script or something like that. Flash every 30 seconds or something wouldn't be draining the battery too much I'd think.
Maybe flashing a custom rom/kernel solves that problem but I'm with the default ones at the moment.
But having the LED bar flashing for notifications would be sweet
I'll see what I can do about it probably only one value for the LED to edit
The LED from Xperia S also isn't really bright
XS led seems fine to me.
XS led is ok, but not really bright

Hi guys,
well, I'm posting here because it seems there is no solution for the above mentioned problem.
I'm currently on STE CM11 (weekly 21) and couldn't find a way to make the notification LED brighter (more visible).
Is there a specific value I must alert? Anyone knows how to make the LED more visible?
p.s. I'm not talking about the illumination bar
Just install it, setup to 5 sec awake
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schwimmer.android.smsawake
does this have notification light for SMS? like many ICS upgraders are complaining that LED doesnt blink for SMS!
Yes, it does!
It helps to wakeup phone for a few seconds, and led notification (stock/standard function) is sart working.
But why do we have to fix .
What a massive company called sony cant be ass to fix .
On there forums therr know the bugs now . The update should be out now and fix it all
It is not a fatal bug, it will be fixed in the next release
There other bugs . Aswell .i stick to gb till all is fixed

It doesn't work for me! In fact, it does nothing at all! It doesn't even wake the screen like it should when I receive an SMS!
From my own experiance with companys ICS for 2011 will never be polished from sony side cause they need to sell 2012 models and this is a good way to do it why......
They rollout buged ics thats not working and buging customers > they cant downgrade officialy > and they buy a new phone.
In the end they put a mayor marketing on the new phones and the 2011 bugs are forgoten.

You mean since the screen/ backlight is turned which is the nature of this app? As well as the ramping up of the cpu while waking up
It would be nice if there is empirical data to know how much power is lost because of this
But how low can smsawake be set to light up the screen? Can we go lower than 5 sec and will it still activate the LED?

Ive done some testing with the fix that worked/half worked posted by till-kruspe and the screen only needed to be on for a sec while the sms was received. So naturally having this app screen on for a sec instead of 5 will save battery compared to 5 sec, but the fact is the screen has to still turn on, when it shouldn't have to be. This is a real battery waster when you compare it to if the led was working correctly and the screen didn't need to come on.
Just my input,
Cheers,
Evil.
Just wanted to notify you guys on LED issue. I am using Stock WORLD ROM, and te notification LED works perfect for messages, calls, emails, facebook..blablabla
Coolbuy do you have rooted ICS or not? I'm using handcent sms and it does have exactly same option as this little tool, but led is blinking only when display is lit. When LCD goes off LED stops blinking.
This also works well with GO SMS. : (
Not for me. I'm just installing plain ICM (without any roots, CWM's etc.) and will check it works.
UPDATE: Checked it and it's not working. Returned to GB and everything is working perfectly. Have to wait until ICS will have most issues solved. At the moment GB appears better for me.
I guess will be nice if we discuss how to achieve some kind of notification on our displays without draining the battery. Smartwatch is good way to deal with it, but let's keep to the phone itself. Most wanted feature is to have recurrent notifications. I invested some time in trying some apps and these are my "5 cents":
- Always On Edge- this is the program I prefer to use so far and will explain why. It lights up the edges and could be set to be recurrent. With many settings about almost everything. Just don't forget to save the settings after changing things. It works most of the time, but it's a bit tricky- don't let the system to control it (to stop it)- you can do it from battery management. And from my experience- use the power button to turn off the screen (or just leave it to turn off). Using some additional programs (like JButton and Fluid gestures) activate more secure mode (could be wrong) and prevent the notification blinking. The good is that it's relatively battery friendly.
- LED Blinker Notifications - always working, nice customization. Shows colored circles on the screen in Awlays On Display manner. Can set different color for different app and random position (to avoid burn-in). The bad- spends a lots of power and the battery is going down fast. And is way pricier. I bought it anyway to test it, but probably will stay unused.
- Glimpse Notifications- works (almost) always. The problem is that will either light up your screen (drains battery, because wakes up the CPU) or makes a vibration or a sound. This could be annoying for everyone.
- integrated Always On Screen feature in our phones- works fine, shows icons with the notifications. Nice solution, but spends about 1% battery per hour (on my phone). This is the whole consumption of the phone of course, but I think that this is 1.5-2 times more than regular consumption. It's good solution anyway.
I use the following combination:
- Always On Display with clock + notification icons
- Always On Edge (rainbow crashes around the edges + clock + notifications)
- phone is in DND
- Xiaomi Mi Band 3 vibrates

I don't want to hear anything from the phone. Just want to be notified in a visual (AOD + AOE) and haptic (Mi Band 3) way.
I assume screen or display is both fine
Hi
I'm also looking for a solution since I miss the LED so much. I'm currently with Always On Edge, but I'm not happy with it. It drains the battery quite a lot, even when I don't get a lot of notifications.
I had days where the stats do report 90 min cpu including 50 min in background. It's quite unrealistic that it had to blink that long during the whole day.
If somebody has a better alternative (also playing together with the fingerprint unlock), please let me know.
Better to check the mAh that are consumed, than the CPU and the screen time. It's located in Power Consumption Details -> Software and is not so bad. But probably depends on how much time you spend away from your phone. You can use AOD and put the phone with screen down, it will turn off screen until you flip it and see if notifications are available.

I had tried to use ALWAYS ON EDGE (among a few other apps) but no matter what settings I tried, etc. I could not get it to work. That being said, I found another app on the Play Store called ALWAYS ON AMOLED and it works like a CHAMP.

I find it unbelievable in this day and age when manufacturers decide to remove a functional Led yet don't replace it with anything half decent for notifications.
You know when you plug in your charger, those green bubbles appear? A notification like that would have been nice.

I've tried a couple of the recommended apps. Pixel Pulse was still too subtle to be noticed from afar. I couldn't get Always on Edge to wake up my phone screen, though after a lot of trouble it DID finally blink when I had the screen on... I'm almost positive I gave it all the requested (and optional) permissions. Is there another recommended app that could produce a noticeable blinking light when I get a notification? In case it matters, I am using a Pixel 3a.

I tried it, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I don't know if it is because notifications are waking my screen, or what. But I don't get any notification light while my screen is off.
EDIT: I had seen the developer reply to a comment saying it wouldn't work after screen wake, by design, as a deliberate effort to save battery. I just turned off the "Wake Screen Upon Notification" option on my phone, and that made NotificationBuddy work. But I want something that will still work after the screen wakes.
I am pretty sure with this device your only choice is to use AOD and then these apps work. Otherwise, they can only really wake the screen. I use LED blinker with AOD on and it works every time, but can be a bit glitchy when trying to open the phone to see the notification. What I mean is, if I use my fingerprint, it does not always go to homescreen, I have to press power button to relock and try again. This is really google's fault for not adding a native option for some kind of blinking on the screen. I think no matter what it would require AOD to work though.
I've always said that something as tiny as the notification LED on Android phones made them far more useful than iPhones. I'm disappointed that Google has removed this once great advantage over Apple, just as it did with the old notification ticker from the pre-lollipop days.

Even with AOD on (which is not my preference) these apps still don't seem to work correctly. Do I also have to disable the wake screen for notifications option? I really dislike these choices.
I'm getting really frustrated that I practically have to hack my phone to get it to do things that my phone from 4 years ago could do natively.
