[Q] [5.x] Cameras can't save on external sdcard - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Sony Xperia Z3 compact with CyanogenMod 12.1.
I tried some camera apps, but it seems they can't save photos on the external sd card. Only internal memory works.
On some other Sony device this worked some time ago:
chown -R 2800 /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1
But here it says for every file that I don't have the permission.
I wanted to see if my file browser (solid browser) can write to the sdcard. I tried to delete a file and I got the message that I have to grant it the right first. So is it something the developers of the camera apps have to implement first to work on Lollipop?
Is there some app that does this already? The stock CM camera app isn't working, with Google camera the location can't be set and lastly I tried Open Camera that fails to save to the sdcard as well.

No support here?

linking external storage as a folderr within internal SD

How do I link the external micro SD as a folder on the internal SD as before with the S2?
MyPhoneExplorer is unable to see the external SD. Previously it navigates via a folder/link within the internal SD.
I see that there will be other problem with other apps soon as I start to use eit more.
I'd be interested in this as well. I tried symlinks but - according to Root Explorer - the internal memory does not support symlinks.
If you're rooted, try out CifsManager.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.plattner.cifsmanager
You can pretty much mount any folder (local or network).
Haven't rooted yet, so I don't know if it works on the S3.

i tried to change the vold.fstab file in /system/etc
amending
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/extSdCard auto /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc1/
to
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard/externalSD auto /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc1/
i had some force closes after a reboot so i changed it back. maybe someone wants to give it a try?
I'm using this init.d script to do that. (needs rooted kernel with init.d support)
First you have to make a folder (called "external_SdCard" in this script) on the internal sdcard where the external card gets bound to. ("/sdcard/external_SdCard") Then flash this zip (copies the script to /etc/init.d/99bind-sdcard) or make a init.d script with the following code:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
sleep 20
mount -o bind /mnt/extSdCard /sdcard/external_SdCard
NOTICE: It needs a few seconds till the internal sdcard is mounted and only after this the external can be bound to the folder on it.
If it doesn't work:
folder name doesn't match script
no init.d support
sleep value too little (try 30 or 40)
PS: Taken/inspired from this site since mine hasn't worked. (I haven't thought of the "sleep" command till the internal...)
EDIT: Problem are the duplicated entries in music player, gallery,...
Directory Bind actually did the trick for me.

That worked for me aswell, but after a reboot I got the same problem as with my solution. (duplicated stuff in gallery etc.)
I simply excluded the external sd card folder in Quickpic. No duplicates since (at least not in QuickPic

I use "DirectoryBind" app for that. It works perfectly.
Now I can to bind any folders between internal and external sdcards.
To work in SGS3 you should check the options:
- Alternate dbase mgmt
- Persistent service
- Bypass path verification

I have a huge collection of music and pics on my external sd and they all are shown twice in gallery and music player - no matter what I try and also with your mentioned options in DirectoryBind - and you don't have this problem?
Burst shot broken after mounting extSdCard DCIM folder in sdcard
I'm accomplishing the same thing as DirectoryBind by using SManager with a little script I put together that looks like this:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
mount -o bind /mnt/extSdCard/Android /mnt/sdcard/Android
mount -o bind /mnt/extSdCard/DCIM /mnt/sdcard/DCIM
mount -o bind /mnt/extSdCard/Download /mnt/sdcard/Download
mount -o bind /mnt/extSdCard/Movies /mnt/sdcard/Movies
mount -o bind /mnt/extSdCard/Music /mnt/sdcard/Music
Anyway, after doing this I had the same problem with the duplicate gallery entries so I created a .nomedia file in /mnt/extSdCard then cleared the app data for Gallery and MediaStorage, rebooted and no more duplicate entries.
Now, the only problem I have left is that Burst Mode doesn't work on the camera. I setup the camera to save to the external SD card and the camera app shows an SD icon on the top-right corner in all shooting modes except Burst, there it changes to an internal memory icon. I can't find any way around this, and trying to shoot in burst mode doesn't work - it sounds like it's shooting pics but the counter doesn't go up and no pics are saved. I assume Burst mode has some special way of accessing the internal DCIM folder that isn't working with the DCIM mount I setup. All other shooting modes work, though, so it's not a deal breaker. I'm just OCD about little nagging problems :cyclops:
Has anybody else run into this or found a workaround?
The camera is probably storing the data in the real internal storage (/data/media) folder instead the virtual storage location /mnt/sdcard
You could fix it by bind-mounting /data/media/DCIM to /mnt/extSdcard/DCIM
However there is a reason for burst-mode not working with the SD-card: they usually are far too slow for sustained writing at that speed.
Some high-class cards may have sufficient write-speed capacity but Samsung prefers blocking to guessing.

Thanks for clarifying, I knew it had to be accessing it another way! Good call on the SD card performance. I wouldn't even attempt it on my old microsd card but I just got a new sandisk microsdxc class 10 UHS-1 card and I've been really impressed with the performance so far, so I may give it a try :fingers-crossed:

try a .nomedia file in the internal SD. but you will not be able to see other media stuff stored on internal SD, only those on external SD, which is where my pictures music etc is stored.

[Q] SGS III - ext. SDCard suddenly ReadOnly

Today I found - after trying to make a foto - that my SDCard doesn't seem to be not accessibl anymore - at least the cam app says this. After some ivestigation I found out that the SD is still accessible but all files and folders are in read-only mode. I checked the perms with ESFileExplorer and found no hint why (775 was set correctly) however the properties dialog of differnt file managers always says read-only. I tried to access, remove and create files/folders via pc o that card (format FAT32) w/o any problems. So I made a backup and format the card within the phone and what shall I say - it seems to work again.
Does anybody have an idea what this may have caused?
SGS III + JB 4.1.2 I9300XXELL5_I9300VFGELL1_VD2 + XXELL5_JKay_Deluxe_Stock_v14_5_4 + rooted with SGS Toolkit
Thanks a lot!!!
BTW: I used the search function already but I did not find an explainantion which matches fully to my problem
Possibly found a reason
Hm, may have found 2 possible reasons for that behaviour:
- SolidExplorer (strange behviour as after start of it a lot of files partly w/o filname (only . or @ or y) are displayed, partly not visible in other file managers and after some time I can't delete/change no file on that card anymore)
- Too high value vor SDBooster (used 1024 now reduced to 512) - but for my understanding this should not be the reason as it was working for a long time w/o problems.
Will investigate later and will inform about the outcome...
Help on this thread please.
Same problem here.. My torrents, my camera, sms backup and restore, titanium backup, everything else specially those i set as daily scheduled activities always end up having unsuccessful results..
The problem can be worked around by unmounting->re-mounting sd-card..... every 5 minutes or so...
HELP!!
format it
Why didn't I think of that in the first place? Geez..
So anyone here who really understands the problem?
Note(2)worthy response using Tapatalk HD.
I have exactly the same issue as you, at the very beginning, i notice this problem when i was taking photo and said my sdcard is not accessible, it then changes to use internal storage.
Let me list out my symptom and solution:
Symptom:
1. The sdcard looks fine, no special error thrown during android startup.
2. Just after startup, i am able to write file /copy file to the external sdcard
3. After a while, the external sdcard becomes read only. I can view/copy files from sd card, but not write/copy file to the external sdcard.
4. No apps can modify the files in external sdcard
5. By using ADB shell, type mount, and you will notice the /extSdCard is mounted as "ro", which means read only.
Description:
If you have the above symptom, your external sdcard probably have some problems...
When I was checking the mount details on step 5, i noticed that the default options is onerrors=remount-ro , it looks like the external sdcared is remounted as read-only because it has problem on external sdcard....
Solution:
I put the external sdcard to a Windows PC, and run scan disk (right click the drive >"properties" > "tools" > Check Now).
It really find problem on the FAT of the external sd card!!! It fix automatically and my external sd card is working fine now.
In my case, it doesn't need to root or format the sdcard.
Good luck!

Marshmallow writing to external sd card

I know Android M has a new way to connect external sd cards, you can convert the external memory into internal memory but this is not what I need. The alternative is that only some directories are write-enabled on the sdcard but this in turn is not enough.
Starting with Kitkat (also working on Lollipop) there was a hack allowing you to use an external sd as read/write storage.
This hack no longer seems to work with marshmallow, if you go searching for sdcard fix you'll find that this fix does not work on Marshmallow.
Are there already apps fixing this problem ( no problem if root access is required since my phone is rooted).
Android 6.0 isn't yet available for my Xperia Z3 Compact but when it becomes available I'd like to have a way to go around this problem.
If it doesn't yet exist do you know names of developers working an such a fix?
+1.
However, for me the problem is immediate: I have a rooted HTC One M8 with a 64GB external SD card that I've recently upgraded to Marshmallow. Like many of you, thanks to rooting I was able to work around Google's SD card handling changes introduced in 4.4 KitKat, and the same fix worked in 5.0.
But I'm having serious deja vu with 6.0, because it seems the behavior is back to being much like KitKat again: Apps can only write to their own private folder under /data on the SD card. But unlike KitKat, I've found no simple workaround like editing a system XML file.
Some apps like ES File Explorer have a special 'root mode' option that enables them to write to any folder of both internal and external storage. For other non-root apps, there is a convoluted workaround the first time the user tries to use the SD card where the user must authorize writing to any folder by selecting the root folder of the SD card from a folder tree. The permission seems to 'stick' after that, but I don't know if it survives a reboot?
So I'm also wondering if any bright devs are working on a more general root workaround like we had for KitKat, perhaps as an Xposed module? And in the meantime, does anyone know what's happening behind the scenes when an app uses the "choose the SD card root folder" solution? Where is that new permission being defined/stored?
Assuming the additional SD card write permission is indeed persistent (or could somehow be saved and restored after a reboot), could we manually add similar permission for other apps that don't include the solution? For example, the QuickPic gallery app does have it, so I can now move and rename images from any SD card folder. But the Dolphin browser doesn't, so when I try to download a file to the SD card, I can only choose the single Dolphin-owned folder. (This wasn't a problem in Lollipop - but Dolphin now gives me a helpful explanation blaming Google for the restrictions added in KitKat, even though I'm two major releases past KK...). Until/if Dolphin adds code similar to QuickPic, it would sure be great if I could manually add a similar permission. I've spent hours searching, but haven't discovered anything. So any ideas would be very welcome!
No response in months. Is this xposed module what you guys needed? Or have you found other workarounds?

Oreo right to SD card

Hey, I recently upgraded to Oreo and since then the camera app has not been able to right to the SD card. Unfortunately I didn't realise this for a while and there lost a lot of photos!
The settings in the app are set to write to "disk" and the camera permissions are set correctly.
I read somewhere about having to format the card but there doesn't even seem to be an option to do this any where in the settings!
Any help would be great because the camera on my phone is currently useless!
Thanks
Chris

I had the same problem with my 128GB Sandisk card. I tried to format but that failed.
In the end I switched the card out for my old 32GB card (yeah I had to remove a lot of audiobooks ) and that one works fine.
The weird thing is that other apps didn't have any issues writing to SD card, just the bloody camera app.
Having the same problem on a Swift 2X after upgrading to Oreo. Before the upgrade, I used OpenCamera instead of the built-in camera app. But there seems to be a general Oreo related SDcard bug at work here. OpenCamera has issues writing to the SD card.
Moreover; _any_ non-builtin application seems to have write issues on Oreo. If I try to copy data on to my SD card from a network source (Gdrive, network share, FTP server) using Total Commander, ES File explorer or FX file manager, this results in 0-byte files which cannot be accessed. ...Until you use the builtin file explorer app, you'll see that they're not actually 0 bytes in size and you _can_ open them. The alternative is to reboot your phone after copying; this will make the files available in alternative file explorers like ES, FX en TC.
From what I understand, this a generic Oreo related issue that's been going on for a while now and it's not by definition Wileyfox related. If you Google the issue; Nokia, Motorola an Samsung users alike on different Oreo upgraded phones suffer from the same bug.
For me, removing storage permissions and reenabling them for the builtin camera app resolved the problem _for the camera related problem_. However, generic file operations still fail.

Can't write to SD Card (EMUI 10)

I can copy/move files from internal storage to SD Card if I use the built-in file manager. However, if I use any 3rd party file manager, the operation will fail. It is as though the SD Card is read-only. I can copy from the SD Card to internal storage just fine.
I've tried ES File Explorer, File Manager Pro, Solid Explorer and they all failed. I've given grants to write to the root of SD-Card. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Try with a real file manager like

Mixplorer works great. Root Explorer also works.
Thank you for your recommendation!
I really don't get it. At first, nothing works. Then when I install Root Explorer and grant storage access to the root of the SD-card, it immediately works.
Then I tried MiXplorer and it also works. Now when I return to Solid Explorer and it is working now.
What's going on? Does Root Explorer unlock something which makes it "click"? I don't get it at all. I only hope it is reliable in the long run and not switching "on" and "off" randomly.

Root Explorer has been the ultimate for me. I bought the paid version when it first came out years ago. It always acomplishes whatever task I need it to do.

But when the card is on the phone I can only use Heawei file manager!!!
I have enable the option allow apps to write to external card.
I've just update on EMUI 10 build 10.0.0186
I can't beleive I tried a lot file manager and also some alternative app like quickpic and no one works good!!!!
Fix the problem...
After enable the option allow apps to write to external card, I tried to disable developer settings.
Also tried to active some app I've disable before... 2 app, default browser and HiCare!
That's all and now I have no problem writing Nano SD card with all of my app!!!

I enabled the default browser and the HiCare app (actually they were not disabled, so I just opened them to complete their setup) but this did not help either.
I even formatted the memory card (using my phone "format card" option) and then reset my phone to factory defaults and set it up again from the beginning without restoring backups.
I still have not found a solution to thus issue, though.
Any ideas anyone?

I have similar problems relating to this thread on my mate 20 pro after updating to Android 10 (EMUI 10). I've tried all the methods mentioned here and it worked briefly before restarting the phone. After restarting the phone, it went back to being unable to copy files to External Storage.
I noticed that i was able to delete and rename files on the external storage but i just can't seem to copy anything into it.
I can copy files from the external card to internal storage but not the other way around.
Tried using MiXplorer, the only way i can copy files into the external card is by this method:
i copied the file and it shows error, but there's an image of the file created on the external card with 0 kb. Then i overwrite the file and replacing the '0 kb' file and it worked. And another method to just to use the built-in file manager which is a pain to use and the UI are crappy.
It was a lengthy method and therefore I decided to downgrade to Android 9 for now.
I also noticed i can't change the download directory of my Ttorrent app to any folder of my choice in external storage.
anyone can suggest a better method to overwrite this external drive issue? Thanks in advanced.

This this the "official" reply at the Huawei forums:
https://consumer.huawei.com/en/comm...-disabled-for-3rd-party-apps-!/topicId_90489/
Now, what I've come to notice is the following:
- All Huawei and Google apps I have tried, do have access to the memory card (e.g. Google Maps is allowed to save its offline maps on the SD card, the same for Google News and the articles it downloads)
- Some 3rd party apps do have access. E.g. Here We Go maps can save its maps on the external card. ASR Voice Recorder can save its recordings to a specific memory card folder, the one that is automatically created -on the card- by the app when it is installed on the phone. Maybe there are other app that we will find they can, too.
- So it seems that the rule is not general, as Huawei implies at that thread I have posted above.
My biggest concern was that MixPlorer has now limited use, and this is kind of sad as it was my favorite explorer.
Huawei Files manager is not bad, it's actually quite OK, but it bothers me that you cannot add 3rd party clouds on it. If it had that option I would be happy with it. I like it that it has that "favorites" option. For now I have created a folder "My Archives" on the internal memory and I initially save almost everything there (e.g. my Nova Launcher backups). Then I use Huawei Files manager to move them to the external memory card on the folders I want.

Then I use Huawei Files manager to move them to the external memory card on the folders I want.

Hey that's a good idea of creating a temp folder on your internal drive before using Huawei file manager to transfer everything out to your external card. However it requires additional steps to get it done but it's a good idea nonetheless. Thanks for that suggestion. For me i'm so used to be using solid explorer to do all my file operations as it has google drive integration which makes it easy n fast to transfer between drives. So i guess my best bet is to downgrade to android 9, it's just much more comfortable to work with and in my opinion, android 10 is not that big of a deal and not much substantial changes anyway. Hehe.
Every reboot I always have this facing problem!
Sometime I must reboot because my smartphone switch off for low battery....
When I reboot try to disable and re-enable the special option in developer menù, also try to uninstall and after install again the memory card (from setup/memory menù).
After that try to copy some file to memory card with default file manager an default Gallery...
Sometimes it is enough sometimes I have to try more and more... But after several time it works!
Xplore
Try xplore by lonely cat games. It's working on my mate 20 pro and survived reboots.
