Hello all. I just recently picked up a Verizon Galaxy S4 to upgrade from my S3. Seems I fell into the bootstrap pit again. Now that I have this thing rooted (changed the kernel via an odin flash, rooted it, moved back to the regular kernel)-where do I go from here? I take it I would have to load safestrap and run touchwiz, Jelly Bean roms? Would I be able to use this flashfire I've been reading about and take it up to a lollipop rom?
Not any good

That's a good question . I found out that the partitions are write protected any way so you can't flash roms . what good is it to root? Oh I changed my startup animation . WOW

Well safestrap works around that. Y ou can load roms that are designed to work with safestrap but I've read a few things about flashfire so I was wondering if anybody could provide some comments on that.

Tried rooting my galaxy note I717 at&t. Something went wrong and it was bricked. Used Stock Odin ROMs for all carriers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1506330
Now the phone boots up and internet works but phone doesn't call out or in. I want to upgrade to ICS like it used to be.
Now when I go into Kies to upgrade it to ICS it says "SGH i717 does not support initializing"
How can I get ICS back on it and everything to work again?

See the thread for all the ICS and tools required...[Road & Ref Map]: Galaxy Note Super Everything Thread (I717)
I would slap CWM or TWRP for your custom installs and if you are looking for STock ICS or any other ROM see thread above.

This is my first attempt at modding my phone so my questions may not make sense ...... so here goes a few questions:
Do I need to root my phone now to do these things? (at the moment I have the stock Odin ROM for all carriers.
Should I put CWM on now or put a ROM on first?
How do you put ROM's on? is it by using the Odin program? What is the best ROM to put on in your opinion?
thanks
No offense but you really need to read more, otherwise you're going to keep running into issues. The link provided for you has all of the info you need.
Beyond that, what you need to do is pick a ROM you want to try, put it on your internal SD card, flash either cwm or twrp, then use that to flash the ROM you put on your internal storage. No need to root. Read up on everything I've mentioned and just take your time. These things are best not rushed. It won't take much to learn what you need to.
And there is no "best ROM"...its a matter of personal preference. Try a few out to see what you like.

I just purchased a Note 2 on Swappa. The phone was rooted when I got it but running a stock ROM. I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus running CM10.1 and I got to say, I do miss a lot from that ROM but I want to give this stock ROM a shot for a while mainly because I want to see if all the Samsung S-Pen apps are something that I will use. From what I understand, these will not be available to me on a custom ROM.
My question is if I load CM10.1, what will my S-Pen functionality be? Are there alternative apps like the Samsung ones for S-Pens? Will the S-Pen even work on CM10.1?
Thanks all!
There are TW ROMs and aosp ROMs. The TW ROMs leave the s-pen functions intact, the aosp ROMs don't have most of the s-pen functions, though I've read there are apps to get some of them back.
Papyrus is 1.
Basically all the spen is is a stylus on aosp but like what has been said papyrus is great for note maybe better than snote, gmd spen control lets you do all the gestures and ANY other gesture you like ive been running aosp for months and prolly wont ever go back to tw....although i really miss multi window, its sick but id rather have my aosp but to each there own make a backup abd try them all out and see what you like...at first i though all the tw goodies were awsome which they are but i rarely ever used them

i will say it again...flash beans stock rooted vramc3 from twrp recovery.
.zip roms do not replace recovery, only stock odin images do that. also you can do this as a secondary option.

I updated from ME7 to MJ7 with success than I flashed philz recovery with the root tools app and got the message
Secure fail: kernel
" system software not authorized by verizon wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest verizon wireless store for help."
After I managed to boot back into my stock rooted phone and flashed CWM from rom manager and with no luck got the same message.
What do you think I should do? I really don't want to have to Odin back to stock and root with root de la Vegas again.
Discard when upgrading is very dangerous. You may have to Odin back to stock and root de la Vegas again
is your phone originally mdk base and you are loki'd? if not, the ONLY recovery available is safestrap. You will have to ODIN your phone and do some reading

if you took the update, you are screwed with custom recovery except for safestrap
So if I have safestrap I have to have a backup of the stock rom right? Or can I just install a custom rom and get rid of the stock rom?

Read the Safestrap threads. The answers to your questions are complicated, particularly the "get rid of the stock rom" since that's possible but risky.
YOU will need to judge whether or not you will take that risk based on understanding how Safestrap works.

Always back up the stock rom.
Like he said read up.
It gets complicated. I'm running Hyperdrive on my stock slot but there are risks.

to me the risks of losing the stock rom isn't worth it...especially if all this is new to you. You can always go back in the future and do i

You're definitely right there. I had to play the Odin game myself and I think for the time being HD11 is going to serve as my stock and I'm going to use Rom slots from now on.

Hi..
I just lost a phone and Asurian Insurance company just sent me a new Note 2 for Verizon (I605) with stock rom 4.3.
My question is is there a way to unlock this phone and load the custom rom ?
If there is could anyone send me a link and detail instructions how to do it?
I have heard if someone is on 4.3 they are stuck and there is no way out until someone comes up with a way.
Please let me know if there is a way to unlock and load custom on rom 4.3.
Thank you

Only way would be to send the phone to mobiletechvideos which cost.
There is also the option of safestrap which can be found under the development section. This doesn't unlock the bootloader, but let's you load some of the 4.3 based touchwiz roms. You have to root first before you can do that, and I have heard that saferoot works well. You also need to be on 4.3 mj9. There are 2 versions of 4.3 for this phone. If you are on the other version you can use Odin to flash the mj9 version.

I just ran saferoot and it worked really well and very easy way to root the phone. (Thx BluGuy)
Now what custome rom should I install? and I just use the Odin to load the custom rom just like before?
What about the Custom recovery?
Do I need to install safestrap as well?
I need help...
Thanks
First stay away from flashing roms in odin while on 4.3 mj9 you will brick your phone. Second you can flash any 4.3 rom over the stock rom with safestrap but!!! Make sure its a rom that can be flashed with safestrap no room for error here be sure, remember this boot loader is locked so no flashing roms in the other rom slots they still need debugging

Hey guys. I just got my hands on a Verizon Note 2 this weekend and have managed to screw it up already. I am coming from the world of unlocked bootloaders with some background in Samsungs shenanigans. Anyway, I think I was on 4.4.2 which is ND7 (I honestly can't remember at this point). I I was able to root and install safestrap eventually. Then comes my stupidity, I forgot that I had to flash a touchwiz rom and flashed another rom and to add injury to insult, I flashed it in the stock slot and not the rom slot. Then I tried to restore my backup and it failed. Now what happens is I can occasionally get into the safestrap recovery and I try to flash Alliance rom and it still doesn't work. I try to boot the stock slot and it gets stuck on the verizon screen. Any help would be appreciated.
Any help? Please?
Can you bring in back to stock with Odin?
I never tried to install a new rom on any Note 2 that was over 4.1.2
