A while ago I was just merely scrolling through Chrome and my social media accounts, and I noticed that my device was starting to overheat. I didn't mind it at first, but while I was trying to change my wallpaper, it suddenly turned off. I took off my phone case and felt my device, and it was really hot. I remember checking Clean Master before my phone turned off, and it said that my phone was 44% hotter than usual. I tried turning it back on, but it wouldn't budge, no matter how many times I would long-press the power button. I ended up taking off the battery and plugging it back in and powering it up, but when the phone finally powered up, its battery dropped from 25% to 13%! I was really alarmed.
It's only happened once, though, but it really alarmed me, and I don't want to risk breaking my phone. I've only had it for a month
Anyone know the reason behind this? I don't remember doing anything extensive during that time period. My phone has also suddenly turned off once, but it wasn't overheating or anything.
My galaxy a5 heated up once. I was running virus scanning from CM security and I accidentally put my phone under my pillow and within 3-5 minutes it heated up like anything. So if you are running any anti virus scanning than it will be advisable to put the phone out of the case.
It's normal if this happens once in a while but if it happens often than it may be a battery problem.

so every once in a while, i'd say every 4 or 5 days... i'll take my phone off the charger and start my day like normal. but on these days, (sometimes i notice and do a hard reset before all this happens) the upper half of the phone will get really warm and even if i do absolutely nothing on my phone, my battery will drain from full to dead in 3-4 hours.
has anyone else noticed this? i'm thinking it may be some sort of cpu cycle leak or some sort of infinite loop some background driver might get itself into.
its pretty annoying if i dont catch it right away and an hour after i unplug my phone while i'm at work to take my phone out of my pocket and have it over half battery gone already.

I have noticed the 'staying warm after charging sometimes' phenomenon....I also sometimes leave it charging all night but it doesn't seem to charge, even though the light is on. I think this is somehow connected to the wonky power button behavior...I get a green light on full charge sometime....i've never seen it turned green while powered off.....sometimes it won't turn on while plugged in, sometimes I need to do a battery pull, sometimes the SD card too, sometimes I need to press the power button a million times or hold it extra extra long....sometimes the charging light doesn't come on and it does charge, sometimes the light comes on and it doesn't...sometimes it gets really hot after charging and doesn't cool down after sitting idle....I usually just shut it off for a minute and turn it back on...somehow.
This is definitely one of my pet peeves with this phone...I also think this is linked to some phones never turning back on again, corrupted bootloader/recovery after a 'fastboot' shut-down or hot restart...
I'm diggin' the phone, don't get me wrong, but....I can't wait for the nPrime...
yeah, but it's less so the problem of it getting warm (pre or post charging) and moreso that it will start heating up a lot and you can tell that something is running the battery down in the background, the only way to stop this is to do a battery pull restart.
has anyone had similar issues with their phone going from full battery to dead in a few hours because of a hidden bugged process or something similar?
bump 10 char
I had that happen after tuning airplane mode off then back on. But that's itt

This happened to me this morning, first time and it was very weird. I've left it charging overnight per usual and this morning when I woke up and unplugged it, it had only 10% battery left. I tried charging it in my car on my way to work and have it plugged in to my computer USB now. I disabled a bunch of stuff as shown on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141221
And it's now starting to charge.
I did however just update to showdown rom and had setcpu on 1.7 conservative. It still should have charged but I'm guessing a stuck process/bug drew all the power last night.
Well back again with new problem.
Have just had my phone back after it was repaired only a week ago by samsung; they repaired the software, replaced screen, battery and USB port. Now my unrooted phone, with only usual apps, has again failed on me. Was on the home screen, nothing else running, and it turned itself of. After a minute turned itself back on, held at the Logo, and then turned of again. Now it wont turn on what so ever. Its not got hot, its not got cold, its not been in a room with steam, its been sat in a decent zenus case, in a house with radiators etc on.
I seem rather unlucky with phones, my old Nokia 5800 went into repair 6 times, until I gave up and brought a £10 phone, that I'm having to use again now.
I have tried charging, despite the fact it was still 62% full when the phone went of. I don't do extreme sports with the thing, I barely use the phone, yet it still keeps breaking. Disappointed, because the phones pretty decent, but starting to feel like I don't do well with them.
Rant over.
Update: Just tried after 30 minutes to turn it on. It turned on for about 15 seconds, got into the unlock screen, unlocked, went to the menu screen and it turned itself of. I put the charger straight in, was charged up to 59% anyway, but thought maybe might be battery... But doesn't seem to be.
Wont turn on/Charge again. The phone is fine temp.
What you're describing could be a phone with a drained battery.
So check the battery with a voltmeter and check the charger. One (or both if you're really unlucky) of them could be busted.
Edit: You can check the charger by plugging your phone to your PC and charging it from there. If it works then it's the charger if it doesn't then check the battery.
Is all else fails return the phone to a service center.
Try this-
Take out the battery, then press and hold the ON button for 7-10 seconds (the longer the better). Reinsert the battery, then press ON button to start it. This is a soft reset, and wipes the temporary memory and empties all remaining power in the circuits. This helps on many phones and even laptops that won't start properly or show anything on screen.
If this does not work, try the next step. Again, do as above. But after inserting the battery, do not turn the phone on, but press and hold the ON button and the HOME button at the same time for 7-10 seconds. This is a hard reset, and works best if done after a soft reset. Just be sure the battery has at least some juice in it and isn't empty. If possible, try with another battery if this does not work.
I read earlier about a similar problem and it turned out to be a loose fitting battery. They put some foam or something at the bottom of the battery so that it would stay tight and retain contact.
You could probably test for this by removing the back cover and pushing the battery upwards while powering on.

Thank you very much MichaelAmrs. you saved my Galaxy S2
Awesome Advice
Thanks MichaelAmrs
I have had some serious trouble with my GS2 not working and the latest has been it not turning on. I stuck my battery in the freezer and then did what you suggested and it worked like a charm. Instead of getting it to boot I tried putting it in Download mode and was able to install the Stock ROM on it and hopefully now it will last. But if nothing else at least it is turning on again.
Good luck.
so heres the story:
when i lock the phone, the screen turns off as normal. but when i hit the power/home button to wake it and unlock it, nothing happens. literally, nothing happens. its as if the phone has turned itself off.
So whats happened is, I left the phone on the charger last night. it woke perfectly this morning when the alarm went off. no issues there.
I put the phone into my pocket and headed into work. i went to check my phone when i got on the bus and this was the first tme that I noticed that the phone wasnt waking. i eventually pulled the battery to get the phone to restart. i tried it again and the same thing happened.
later I made a phone call. the same thing happened again when i took the phone away from my head (the screen didnt restart, and I couldnt hit the End Call button cause there was none.)
since then, i've figured that to make sure the phone doesnt go to permanent sleep i have to do one of 2 things,
1) keep the phone music player running constantly, or
2) keep the phone connected to the usb charger.
clearly this isnt exactly practical for a mobile.
im not running any other Rom, its still the stock rom, android v 2.3.5, not rooted or anything else?
is this somethign anyone else has seen?
its called 'sleep of death' or SoD. some people has experienced this and some are able to fix it. it depends on what is causing it.
some blame it to the battery and the battery's contact point..
sometimes it fix itself after few reboots..
cheers for the info. Ill look into it and see if its worth trying to fix or just sending back.
no problem, i have this problem and cant do anything about it. i used load monitor to keep the phone awake, u/v a bit so it wont drain so much battery. but battery drainage still noticeable like 1% every 5 min..
just wondering, does it feels hot/warm near the camera lens when it happens? bcause mine does.
not particularly.
i finally got through to my provider and will be able to get it fixed/replaced soon. they just dont half drag their feet
I'm in dire need of some help. My phone is a stock unit that has had no modifications to it at all. It started shutting off randomly a week or two ago, usually when I would use GPS, bluetooth, or the internet but it does happen when everything is turned off (GPS, bluetooth, and wifi) When I turn the phone back on, the battery would be totally drained displaying to a critical level. This would cause the phone to shut back off. I can repeatedly turn the phone back on, and usually one of the times the battery will be displayed with more charge and allow me to use it, but if I did anything other than make a call the phone would shut back off. This problem does not occur if the phone is plugged in and charging (never shuts off randomly and the battery does not drain). I have already tried factory resetting the phone multiple times and that hasn't seemed to help. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried a new battery? Sounds like your battery is on its last leg. It could also be battery contacts on your phone, make sure they are clean and actually touching the battery when you insert it.

I second this, I had the same issue a couple years ago with my g1, a new battery made it run like new again.

what ROM are you using? are you overclocked? I had similar problem with some roms overclocked, my phone would shut down, restart, battery drain was horrible!! during calls would be the most annoying it would turn off and was walking have a conversation with the plastic by my ear .after some research and testing the problem was my overclocking was unstable at 1.2 + running on 1ghz after a while the problem went away
Your phone will restart or shutdowns randomly..if
1.You overclocked GPU or CPU to high performance.
2.You flashed any unwanted zip files for performance or somewhat.
3.You make the phone very heat[Main Reason].
Instructions:
1.Avoid playing high end games for long time(Like me).
2.Avoid playing high end or medium games above 20mins. while charging.
3.Don't allow your phone to heat.(Due to temperature).
4.Try Re-flashing your current Rom(if you installed custom rom).
5.Try flashing your phone.
6.Check your phone completely for viruses with a better antivirus.
7.If the problem is after installing some apps..Try uninstalling that.
Thats all i Know!
happened to me before more than once I agree that you should get a new battery but if you have to wait in the meantime, what I did was:
1. pull the battery out let the phone cool down
2. I put it back in and turned it on
3. If it turns on okay drain the battery till it shuts off by playing music
3. repeat 1 and 2 and if it turns on okay again repeat step 3
4. if not then let it stay off and charge it to maximum and it should be useable
I did this because I assumed that the phone for some reason wasn't reading the battery levels properly so I made sure that the battery was fully drained then charged it to max to fix that. It worked for me but its just to make the phone useable as I still needed a new battery. It drained very quickly and I had to be charging even 3-4 times a day on heavy use but if I only made phone calls and texts it got me through one day.
For awhile now I have been running the AOKP ICS ROM v7.3.2012 on my sgh-i777 and along with my poor battery life (which I assumed was normal after skimming through multiple forums) my phone has been freezing up (not requiring hard reboots 90% of the time) and shutting down at points in the night. Throughout the day my phone is a must and is ran like a mule. Assuming I'm fulfilling my RAM's duties, I am faced with force closes on programs frequently. Every night when I go to bed, I plug in my phone and let it idle throughout the night. The past two nights I've woken up on my own, thankfully in time for my test this morning, to find my phone off. Not just off, but completely down (requiring me to eject the power cord and battery for a few minutes and reapply the battery). When I try to turn it back on the navigation panel lights flash and seconds later the phone powers back on. This is my second sgh-i777 from AT&T after my first phone began turning itself on and off in an endless loop. The ROM build has served me well for months and all the sudden these shut-downs have been occurring. It's becoming a bother to my phone's vital importance in my everyday goings. Please help.

I would first perform a back up then perform a full wipe and reflash your rom of choice. If it continues to happen... flash back to stock to see if it still happens. If it does then you may need to warranty the phone.
