NFC Location? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to work out exactly where the NFC chip is in the S6 Edge as it seems hit & miss when I try & pay for something using contactless in shops.
I don't know whether to hold the top part of the phone near the NFC-enabled Simcard to the contactless reader, or some other place?

Looking at tear down photos, it appears to be located next to the camera module, opposite of the flash. It is a gold square.

I just had a play around with an NFC tag and the most reliable place for it to be detected is in the middle somewhere between the samsung logo and the centre of the phone.

Thank you very much for your efforts in finding the location of the NFC chip.
So I just need to make sure I touch the NFC reader at roughly just above halfway in the centre?

No NFC at launch ? (I9100)

Here in Sweden there is rumour that SGS2 I9100 will not have NFC at launch.
NFC will come later and the SGS2 without NFC cant upgrade to NFC.
For me it sounds like a totally stupid idea.
What do you think ?
Have you read anything about it in any other country ?

Well I don't know about Sweden but in Ireland, support for NFC is pretty scarce (read inexistent) so no harm really...
Same here...Just a few project and i think i have SGS3 before NFC is big here..
But i still hope NFC is in SGS2
I want the best heh

Here in Finland we hardly have color TV's, so the lack of NFC is not a problem.
Doesn't bother me much if they have NFC. In India there is no support what so ever and I think it will be years until it does.
Although I would still appreciate the technology within the phone. I travel a lot, and it would make it easier to conduct fast transactions.
Clove have confirmed (in the comments) that the UK version will have NFC:
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2011/04/14/...-confirmed-exynos-chip-quad-band-3g/#comments
No NFC would be a big deal for me -- sure, it's not popular yet, but getting phones with NFC on board will be key to making it popular in the future. Google are also pushing NFC heavily:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/google-expands-nfc-check-ins-clutters-more-restaurant-windows/
It doesn't really matter if you really need NFC you can buy one of these SD-cards http://www.nearfieldcommunicationsworld.com/2009/01/12/3485/tyfone-puts-nfc-into-microsd-cards/ they have built-in NFC
i find NFC totally useless at this point
i've had the Nexus S for aprox 6 mth already, and i still have not found a SINGLE place that will offer NFC anything,
i'll be happy to see an add via NFC, but not even so.
i'll say we'll need at least 2 more years before the public sector, and market includes more NFC stuff.
i'll be interested to use my phone to pay for items via NFC
but NONE store supports that yet.
again... NFC is too green, there is no market at all for it yet.
in 2 years time we'll probably be at SGS 3 or SGS 4 already
Agree, especially in locations that NFC requires data transfers, most stores wont be able to offer it in India. I could see some retailers doing it but it cannot be expected that EVERYONE will go crazy over NFC and buy a $700 device to utilize it.
In sweden Samsung has confirmed on facebook that SGS2 launch without NFC.
And that they will launch one version with NFC later.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I cant wait.
Lucky me that i live in north of sweden.
It will take years before NFC is here

As I said in the swedish swedroid forum I want NFC. Why pay same price as an device without... I totally agree with scorp1on1899
It might be that for certain carriers branded S2 will be delivered w/o NFC since the carriers THEMSELVES integrate NFC on their SIM-Card.
So speaking about NFC or not NFC: this is a tiny chip with a value of 1-2 .- € !

What? NFC on the SIM-Card?
Never!

NFC can be implemented via SIM card if the carrier wants to and also via SD card. Where the chip is located within the device is mostly meaningless.

Hä? Really?
And how can the device read NFC-Information like buying traintickets, etc.?
With the Sim-Card or SD-Card???

The phone can read the sim/sd-card, thus the NFC chip on the card. As long as the phone is prepared (in terms of hardware) to read NFC chips from sim/sd-cards, I don't see any problems.
I'm not an expert but I think that technically it should be possible to put NFC chips in cards like sd or simcards.

I don't think so .. you would need a new interface for the cardreader .. maybe something like mhl for the usb-port (standart-micro-usb isnt able to put out video as hdmi does) and i don't think this will be integrated ..
NFC will be integrated into the phone .. or not
but for sure not in the sd/sim card
Edit: Ok maybe it could work, according to some pages i found on google .. but still appears weird to me

[Q] NFC possible in all devices?

Appologies in advance if this is complete rubbish. From what I understand, NFC works by holding devices/cards that are NFC enabled close to a suitable paypoint. Some bank cards, eg Barclaycard already offer this service. From this, am I wrong in assuming that its not the hardware thats important, but moreso the acual chip on the card. If thats the case - is it down to the network operator to issue the modified chips/sims to slot into the phone to make it NFC enabled - OR do you actually need modified hardware on the phone? If you do need modified hardware, whats stopping anyone from opening a bank account that issues NFC credit/debit cards and simply cutting out the chip from the cards and putting that chip under the back cover of your phone (the chips from the cards would be pretty small and should easily fit under the cover in the battery region)? That way, you could still tap and pay with the back of the phone. Is that completely ridiculous?
NFC posts here show on sim .

I think the idea is that u can reprogram the chip if its hardwired into the phone or something..maybe look it up on Wikipedia or something.

thanks for replies. So, JJEgan, the nfc enabled phones are physically the same as 'non enabled' oness? Its just the SIM thats modified?
They are not the same.
The NFC chip in the the Nexus S can read, write, and emulate an NFC tag. It allows developers to use it for their apps.
I suspect that the NFC enabled sim cards only have an embedded NFC tag, which I don't think developers can access. It simply acts as a single purpose tag for payments for example, just like in some credit cards. It would not allow for read/writes, or for multi use emulation.

Orange demoed the SIM being used to read and write tags as well as making payments. The SIM is using technology from Gemalto to allow it. It's just a case of having the right app on the phone. I'm hoping someone with a GS2 will get ahold of one soon enough.

Yeah that is my understanding to, you can either have the phone with a built in chip. Or use an NFC enable micro sd card.
Both give you the same functionailty. The down side is the sd cards are probably small capacity in terms of gb for storage, and you would not be able to swap out the micro sd and still use nfc (if you are one of those that uses multiple sd cards for storage)
The micro sd route would be a good route for samsung to go, send a free one to all of those that purchased the launch model without nfc built in.
Not heard of the sim option. But I guess it would work in the same fashion as the sd card.

I don't think so. From what I gathered the NFC enabled SIM card can only be read by other devices, so it will be able to act as a contactless payment or transport card. BUT it won't enable your phone to read or write NFC tags, so you won't be able to tap nfc enabled ads to get information (like with QR code but without the camera), nor to create your own NFC tags with your phone.
Unless someone can point to the 13.56 mhz antenna, this phone won't be doing any read/writes.

The antenna is built into the microsd card
http://www.nearfieldcommunicationsworld.com/2009/01/12/3485/tyfone-puts-nfc-into-microsd-cards/
Reading around it does look like both the sd and sim options focus more on using nfc as a payment method, than on other uses for the tech.

True, but that antenna is just for the NFC tag in the SD card to be read by another device. There is no embedded antenna or NFC chip in the phone, nor the ability to add integrated NFC at a later date. The NFC abilities in Android can never be utilized without that.
You are correct that this limits the use to small payment or transit access. Might as well tape your Barclay credit card or Oyster card to the back of your phone, there will be no integration with apps.

I'm confused, can anyone clear this up?

Does NFC exist on UK's SGS2s as of now? I mean if I go to any shop and buy SGS2, will I be guaranteed to have a NFC in it?
no, you will not be guaranteed to have NFC. Some handsets have it some do not it, you need check out the phone before you by it.

Don't worry too much about it.

I need NFC because I'm going to tweak it to make it a smart card for transport systems in future if possible. So, I've got no choice but to have NFC enabled phone.
Wow. Australia still uses paper tickets...
I've heard there are different variations of the SGS2 that have NFC but you'd have to do specific research on the device you were purchasing.
Also NFC is probably going to be available on on phones with an sd card slot based on upcoming technology...

[Q] How to emulate NFC tag myfare on GSIII

Hello,
I am a CIO of a train company, and I have two questions regarding NFC emulation on NFC smartphones and especially Galaxy SIII.
1/ we have electronic locks on our offices, using standard NFC Myfare tags (like in hotels) is it possible to put my Galaxy SIII on "myfare mode" in order to record it in the lock and use the phone as a key?
when you put the lock in learn mode, it is only waiting for tag to be presented and record it as a valid key.
2/ we are developping a new PDA to board people in our trains. The PDA will be equiped with a IR and NFC reader. the customers will be able to write the serial number of any compatible myfare card when he buy a ticket, and then board presenting the recorded NFC card.
we will allow transportation cards, or others, but is there any easy way to say to the customers where to find the unique NFC ID of his phone?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the same problematic. We have in our company contact-less RFID company cards. With them we can access to our buildings, pay the canteen, and a lot of other stuff. Those card are Mifare tags too.
We would like to try to emulate those cards with androids phones. It's seem it's not that easy. If you have any clue about how to do it, i'm interested

Samsung Pay - Bell Canada S9 Plus

Hi All,
I just discovered that RBC have added the ability to use their debit/credit cards with Samsung Pay. I excitedly added my debit & credit card and successfully activated both of them. I can open Samsung Pay from swiping up from the home screen and select either of the payment methods. My problem is so far I have tried numerous different locations over the last few days and when I present the phone to the payment terminal it simply doesn't register. No errors at all just nothing. I tried removing the phone from the Otterbox Symetry case but it didn't make a difference. I also deleted the app and re installed it. Still no joy. My wife has an S8 Plus and her Samsung Pay works with no issues whatsoever even with a really cheap folio case.
I would love to hear from anyone that is using Samsung Pay on the S9 Plus in Canada, particularly with RBC cards. Not sure if I am doing something stupid but I'd love to get it working.
Regards
Richard
This is how it works for me in the UK
Open samsung pay, tap where it says credit/debit cards, tap on the card you want to use.
Now you have two options. If you are using fingerprint unlock then use it now and the app will display your payment card on a black background and the phone starts to vibrate and you have 30 seconds to make the payment.
If you are using pin, tap on the pin button and enter your pin number then same thing will happen.

Are you using your iris or fingerprint scanner to initiate the payment process? It's not as effortless as Android pay. It has the added redundancy.

I tried again last night with no luck,
I unlocked my phone, swiped up from the bottom of the home screen, selected my RBC debit card then used my fingerprint. This initiated the 30 second countdown. I placed the phone over the terminal exactly where the NFC receiver is both horizontally & vertically. It would not recognize the payment, no errors. I eventually had to use my actual debit card
