Google introduced a new version of Google Play Music with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), but restricted its availability to Android 4 (ICS). Users of android 2.2 and 2.3 were left out of the update. The restriction was made deliberately by Google by putting the target sdk version as 14 which is ICS, though the minimum was 8.
A developer at XDA decompiled the app, spotted the sign and then, added 8 as the sdk version. The app was then recompiled and then, he uploaded it for everyone to download and install the app (cheers!). The installation is simple, just install it like a normal apk file.
Screenshots are from my Device:Its fully working.

Hi,
I am looking for information on how to get the Gmail apk freely available without using Android market.
I have two custom android devices with no access to market - one running Android 2.1 and another running Android 4.1.
I would like to get 2 versions of the Gmail.apk -
1. Older one which is compatible with Android 2.1
2. Latest one
I am using my own build made from the AOSP code on these devices - android market is disabled in the build.
Also what is the procedure/licencing for packaging the Gmail.apk as part of your own build from the Android AOSP code ?
Thanks.
Hi,
I am developing a hybrid app and would like some of the features of the newer version of webview. I check on the phone (Settings/Apps/All -> Android System WebView) and the stock version is version 39. I also note that the 'FORCE STOP' and 'DISABLE' buttons are inactive.
I installed the new version manually from the Google Play Store, and that is version 58.
If I list the packages using adb, I see that the old webview is com.android.webview while the newer one is com.google.android.webview.
So, now I have both versions installed, but I see from WebSettings.getUserAgentString() that my app is still using version 39.
Is there a way I can get my app to use the new webview?
Regards,
Max.
BTW, phone is vkworld f1 and not rooted.
I have Acer A500 with Android 4.0.3
I'm trying to install apk Youtube 11.01.70
Youtube won't run without Google Pay services
Google Play services is not present
I try to install apk Google Play services 14.3.69. When I try to install it, it tells me there is a problem parsing the package
Any more ideas?
Because you're using an outdated version of Android.
So it's not possible at all? I thought for an old version of Android I just had to find the right old version of the apps (apk) and installed them.

Even if you did that, it'll ask you to update your apps.
And you can't manually just add all the apps you need? (like Google Play Services in my case)
I find it surprising that this old Android cannot go back to the state it was 10 years ago, if I can get the same software (apk)
In general, the problem parsing the package means that your system software is too old to install that apk file.
Can't you upgrade your Acer A500 system software via OTA at first?
On the other hand, does your mobile phone system really have no built-in Google service framework?

Thanks for the idea. I have never done something like that. Where can I find a OTA image for A500? If you have any instructions for installation it would be also appreciated
Thanks for all the answers. To clarify:
I had Google Services Framework 4.0.4-278776
I just installed Google Play Services 8.1.04 (2215451-036) (036) (successfully, as per indications in this post)
I had install Youtube 11.01.70
When I try to run Youtube tells me that there is a newer version and doesn't go further.
This tablet won't run anything past android 4.0.3, at least without some hacks. With hacks this will run with android 5.1, thus allowing the installation of YouTube.
