I'm very new to the whole flashing rom thing. I've tried an unknown amount of times to access clockwork recovery however continued to come to either stock recovery or black screen. I am becoming very frustrated with this whole process. Someone please help me with this.
The Streak overwrites custom recovery files, and that is why you're not seeing the custom recovery you installed. There is a way to stop this which involves renaming etc\install-recovery.sh to etc\install-recovery.sh.bak. I used SuperManager from the Market to do the job, since it can write to the system.
I can provide a more detailed how-to later, but in short, I installed streakmod recovery, rebooted, installed and ran SuperManager to change the file mentioned above, then installed streakmod recovery a second time in case I wanted to flash custom updates to files.
downloaded supermanager however still not entirely sure as what to do. if you are able further help me it would be greatly appreciated. this has become a significantly long process. thank you

completed the task listed above. thank you for the required steps. however... using clockwork brings me to a black screen. you mentioned using streakmod? that will require fastboot right? I don't know how to use fastboot, like I can get to fastboot just not sure what to do from there. and on top of that no driver will properly install on my computer from the device for some reason, including android 1.0 and dell streak driver. what should I do now? thanks again for everything.
Flashing Streakmod will require getting into fastboot, yes. However you do not install drivers from the Streak. They areinstalled from the computer.
1a. Download ADB Tethering Drivers from here.
1b. Download Superuser and copy it to the root of the MicroSD card.
2. Download multirecovery flasher from here and extract the files to a directory, C:\Streak for example.
3. Run multirecovery flasher after reading up on how to use it, and select Streakmod Recovery.
4. Enter Fastboot mode on the Streak by holding down the camera button while turning the Streak on.
5. On the white screen that shows up following step 4, tap "Fastboot".
7. Wait for the response screen, which should say "Wait for USB FastBoot detect...".
8. Plug the data cable into the Streak, and watch the screen change to "FASTBOOT_MODE" in response.
9. The recovery image will very quickly load.
10. Hold down the volume up and down buttons then unplug the data cable. Continue holding down the buttons until you successfully get into Streakmod Recovery. From there you should be able to root the phone by installing Superuser from the "Install Update.zip" option in Streakmod Recovery.
11. Reboot.
12. If you want Streakmod Recovery to stick around, you'll need to follow the how to I provided earlier in the thread, then repeat steps 3-9 in this how to so Streakmod Recovery is reinstalled, since it was overwritten when you rebooted in step 11.
Now, you may encounter a problem at step 8, where the Streak does not show "FASTBOOT_MODE" but is stuck at "Wait for USB FastBoot detect...". This is where the ADB Tethering Driver I provided a link to comes into play.
1. Unzip the ADB Tethering Drivers into a directory.
2a. If running Windows XP, select "Run" and in the dialog box that pops up type "devmgmt.msc".
2b. If running windows Vista or Windows 7, in the search bar at the bottom of the Start Menu, type "device manager" and hit enter.
3. In the device manager should be an item labeled "Android 1.0".
4. Right click "Android 1.0" and select "Update Driver Software".
5. Select "Browse my computer for driver software".
6. Click on "Browse" and navigate to the directory where the ADB Tethering Driver is located.
7. Click "Next" to install the driver.
8. If a prompt comes up saying the driver is not digitally signed, ignore the prompt and install the driver anyway.
9. Re-run the how-to above.
Hopefully this helps, because this is exactly how I had to do it myself, including installing the driver.
Followed to a T and still have the same results. Black screen when I try to get into Streakmod. You get into SR by doing double volume and then selecting update.pkg right?
EDIT: fixed. I was trying to flash from 1.6 O2 recovery. Needed to update to 2.1 O2 to make it work. Thanks
Since this thread is here I hope someone can solve my similar problem. I am trying to install a zip file.
I want to run Clockwork mod recovery mode but when I try it just reboots as normal. I have tried following the instructions by renaming the recovery-install file. But nothing has happened. I am on o2 stock 2.2 is there another option available to me or will I have to go down the Fastboot method?( Which I don't fancy trying to get my head round!)
You need to go into fastboot in order to flash the recovery from your computer. Did you do that?
Turn phone off, hold camera button, turn phone off, wait 20 seconds, connect phone, run multi recovery flasher to install streakmod, reboot. Hold volume buttons when phone restarts, then press power on the blank screen to bring up streakmod.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding something?

Hmm...I didn't want to hear that but I guess I'll have to give it a go.
I was hoping that I could just do it from running Recovery Mode from Rom Manager without the fuss of messing with Fastboot mode. I've read too many scary stories of things going wrong. If everything goes to plan then I may as well consider trying to install 2.2.2.
Thanks mate.Have a +1 on me!
this was very simple to do once figured it out. streakdroid is running very well. I would like to thank everyone here for the help.
I need some serious help... I think I bricked my Nextbook Premium 7. I compiled a custom ROM and forgot to included a launcher. Didn't realize it until after I flashed it. My tablet is stuck in a bootloop and only way to shut it down is with the reset [pin hole] button. Power button does nothing except start it up. I have already tried to put the stock update.img on an external SD hoping it would boot from there, but it did not. I am not sure what to do next, I have looked all over google and xda. Please help!
Thank you in advance!
Do you have a custom recovery installed? Did you try installing it threw fastboot files and cmd prompt on computer?
Please hit the thank you button if i helped!

There ins't a custom recovery installed, this device flashes by detecting an update.img and askes to install it. It doesn't get past what would be considered the kernel screen. This tablet doesn't work like a standard android phone. There are no hard buttons except the power button, so attempting to get into any recovery is not possible. It also doen't boot enough to add any files to it.
Sounds like your screwed. Sorry.....
Please hit the thank you button if i helped!

Ok, just bricked my Nextbook 7
Here is how I flashed a firmware without access to recovery:
If you are in a bootloop, Connect USB and Power.
Press and hold pin on back until you hear windows try to detect a device but the screen is off.
Download this: http://arctablet.com/assets/tools/Fi..._Tool_v1.4.zip
Install the driver from the drivers folder.
3. Installing the drivers on the computer
Following the tablet entering in recovery mode, the computer should now show it has found a new USB device and prompt for a device driver. Select the appropriate driver in the driver directory from the Rockchip Flash Tool 1.4 package.
It will then install the driver for RK29 Device
4. Sending the firmware to the tablet
The flashing tool should display a green square around the number 1 in the lower left area of the Windows application.
Select the firmware file to flash using the button in the top right area of the application. Select the update.img file from here:
http://www.multiupload.com/NQHSNZJSO2
Then push the Upgrade button to transfer the selected firmware to the tablet.
The firmware will be copied to the tablet, a progression counter will go from 0% to 100% on this step, followed by a verification.
You are done, let the tablet reboot and update itself. It should take a few minutes for the flash process to finish.
This procedure has been successfully tested on Windows XP 32 bits for flashing a bricked NextBook 7 Premium YF1011 (but should work on others)
Help !!
Please help, got the tablet yesterday NEXT7P12 YF091211085 by flashing the official site was a brick, the tablet will not turn on, the computer does not see it.
screen moved after installing rom
Hi, i don't know if I'm on the right place but if anyone can help me, please I haw the Nextbook 7 premium and have instaled costum rom on it, but after rebooting my screen position has moved from right to left 2 cm and from up to down 1 cm , so my screen is moved I don't know why I have try to install 3 other rom and factory firmware but the screen is still moved or should I say cut. Any ideas? please I have try to google it but no luck...
I no longer have my np7 but I did try just about every ROM for it. Never have I had or seen an issue like this, and in truth I can't think of what the issue may be.
There are different np7 variants and some don't play nice with custom ROMs (built sept 2012 and older lose WiFi) so you might have a model that can only use one software due to hardware/firmware change.
There never was much development for the np7 here, I think finlessbob and others are still working on it at freaktab.com maybe see if they can help

I've heard this works for other people. With my phone it doesn't. When I plug it in, it doesn't show an unknown device. I've already downloaded and installed MT65xx Preloader and tried out a VCom, but still nothing. I've been going at it for a week, so if anyone's got an answer, advice would be great. Thanks!

Do you already solve your problem? because I have now the same problem as this.
I have pressed the wireless update then it restarted and it says an Error status 7.
I don't know what to do and how to deal with this problem.
can you help me?
My nextbook tablet rk3026 has a partition named metadata that holds the recovery boot commands. You could possibly try to wipe it and do a factory reset. I don't think it actually gets mounted so you would need to find a file the same size as the partition and dd to it. Or back up your system with rockchip flash tool then using a hex editor replace all data in metadata image with zeros. Obviously be careful. Here is a tool download with included guide credits to finless at freaktab(not sure if he is here at xda) for posting it.
http://freaktab.com/forum/developme...p-your-rk-device-rom-with-the-new-rk-2-1-tool
as always BACKUP and know if you don't do it correctly you may get a brick.
thank you for the response Destructos. but that solution won't help for my freakin weird tab 33gt HD+.
I get frustrated now
Problem solved
first thing to do is make sure that you have already installed the rkchip_usb driver in your computer.
What are the requirements?
1st of course your Tablet and Cable Connector
2nd Finless ROM Flash Tool v1.37
3rd Rokchip BatchTool v1.7
4th the update image/firmware for your Bluewave 8 HD+ that is downloadable from their official website
Steps:
1. off your tablet and connect it to the computer
2. open the Finless Rom Flash, uncheck all the boxes
3. turn ON your Tablet (be attentive) and while the blue screen is starting you may NOTICE that the ROM FLASH TOOL detected your device, it says "RKAndroid Mass Storage USB". when you have read that, press immediately the "Reboot Flash mode" and your device will in black screen. but ROM Flash tool still detected your device as "RKAndroid Mass Storage USB "
4. Open the Batch Tool, (you must know how to use it) find your image, then you will notice that the CONNECTED DEVICES below have color green, in that case you may now Click UPGRADE. wait for a minute and booooom, you device is functionable again.
have a feedback if it is helpful.
P.S.
before I go to that steps, when I am stuck in RECOVERY MODE of my device, I Click the Recover from BACKUP then my tablet restarts and it turns to BOOTLOOP and repeatedly saying NO COMMAND.

Why is it, when I do this, my tablet can't be detected by the software? I'm stuck on recovery mode. When it's on the blue logo, still does nothing.
I can only see my device when I look for it on Device Manager under Android Phone. Why is that? It doesn't show the "Other Devices". I've installed the driver but to no avail, still fails me. Please help. Thanks!
I got the Dell Venue 8 7840 as an early Christmas gift (for myself, at Best Buy) and was saddened to learn getting root was (nearly) impossible. I followed various guides (many written this summer, before the latest batch of updates - as of December 2015) but found myself nowhere. Then, I found my answer.
Well, fellow root-wanter, I'm here to tell you it is possible, but it won't be easy.
How I Got Here
Right out of the box, I hastily updated to all the latest firmware updates from Dell. That was my biggest hurdle. So if you plan to do this and you haven't updated the device yet, DON'T UPDATE! Follow the several guides here to get root.
Too late? Already screwed the pooch? Read on.
Generally speaking, you need to do a few steps to get where you want to be. They are (roughly) as follows:
Unlock the Bootloader (developer settings change, adb commands)
Use the Intel Flash Tool to flash an earlier firmware, thus making your device able to boot a temporary ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM)
Use clockwork to wipe the system and cache, then reinstall the OS and SuperUser
Reboot and Enjoy!
Here's the long version of steps I took to make this possible:
Getting Started
As a prerequisite, please install at least the minimum adb/fastboot tools. For first timers, ADB is the Android Debug Bridge, which allows command-line access to system level tools when working with an Android device. It's the backbone of this entire process. Fastboot is a debug mode wherein you can run certain commands on the system, without the presence of an OS. As an Android user, and certainly as somebody who's found themselves on XDA, you should become familiar with fastboot and its abilities. You also can (and should) download the entire set of platform tools (part of the Software Development Kit) as a matter of course.
There are several other tools, firmware files, images, etc. that you will need. I've put all the files I used together in a single zip file, which you can download here:
Dell Venue 8 7840 Tools and Files (zip)
* (Thanks to the many contributors on this forum, like toxic_garden, enzymeyllw, mrgardiner and of course xBIGREDDx. Also Chainfire for SuperSU!)
Once you have all your files downloaded, you need to grab the Intel flash tool. My god is that tool a pain in the ballsack. It's also a necessary evil. Give Dell your firstborn, install the damn tool, and let's move on.
Seperately, you will need an SD card with the following files on it: update.zip and UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Ready to Go? Good.
First, enable Developer Options in Android. To do that, go into Settings >> About Tablet >> and tap the Build Number a bunch of times. After some vigorous tapping, a toast message (The little gray-oblong, semitransparent box near the bottom) will pop up and tell you "You're now a developer!". Congrats.
Go into Developer Options, look a few items down the list for "OEM Unlocking" and enable that sucker. If you were successful, it was the first step toward greatness.
If you have to back anything up, now's the time to do it. Because these next steps will wipe your device clean.
Install the Intel Drivers if you haven't already, and in Developer Options enable USB Debugging (it's not too far down below OEM Unlocking)
Some more drivers will install on your PC, and switch it over to Camera (PTP) mode when you see the selection option in the Notification tray. Eventually, if you played your cards right, you'll see an RSA Security request on your device, asking if you want to trust your PC and displaying a hex address. Click OK.
On your PC, find your platform-tools folder (in the Android SDK folder) or wherever you installed the minimal adb/fastboot tools.
In this folder, hold down Shift and right-click, then choose "Open Command Window Here" (alternately, go to the Start menu, type cmd and right-click "Run as Administrator" then navigate to your folder with adb.exe and fastboot.exe in it.)
Cool, take a breather. How are you feeling? Good? Good.
In the black window, type adb devices. You should see a string of numbers or numbers/letters and something like 'unauthorized' in the list. If it's blank, the ADB drivers are not installed properly. Go to your device manager, find anything with a question mark/yellow icon that looks like intel or android or moorefield, and install the drivers manually. You can search XDA if you get stuck on this step.
Back in the black window, type: adb reboot bootloader
Your device should immediately black out and, after a short while, go to the bootloader menu.
From here, go back to the black window and type: fastboot devices
You should see another set of numbers/letters and a word after. As long as you see something, you're golden. If it doesn't show up, you may need to double check those drivers. Another set of drivers will need to install for your device to be seen in this state. Just stick with it, you'll get there.
All good? Then type fastboot oem unlock
You'll get a warning, but just continue on.
Once unlocked, it's time to flash new firmware. Note: For me, this was absolutely the biggest PITA step. The tool was written with virtually no instructions. What follows is how I got it to work.
While you're still in the bootloader menu, you should see confirmation that your device is unlocked. YAY!
Use the menu to boot the device normally. Note: All your user data is gone, so your tablet will act like it's brand new again. Skip through as much BS as you can and get back to the home screen of your tab. Go to settings, and re-enable USB Debugging like last time.
While that's happening, go to your PC and fire up the Intel Phone Flash Tool. (Nice name, Intel.)
Load up the firmware folder "Dell_Venue_8_7840_Lollipop_5.0.2_qs_rd_opensource-blankphone-userdebug-1397", and specifically choose from the dropdown to flash the file: flash-DDO_BB.xml
If the tool thinks your device is not connected, that's okay. If the tool thinks your device is connected, that's OK too. Don't sweat it.
With the tool still running, as soon as its connected (allow Android Debugging, change to PTP or what have you) hit the Start to Flash button.
It will try about 100 times to find your device (you can see a little console log at the bottom of the tool) ... while it's searching, hold the power button on your device and POWER IT OFF. (Yes, off. Counter-intuitive, I know.)
As it powers off, it will enter some quasi-dream state that Intel dreamed up that will allow it to flash the firmware. Give it a bit of time, and eventually the firmware will flash successfully. HOORAY! You just paved the way for CWM.
Now go back to the folder of files and tools I told you to download, and find the folder "IntelAndroid-FBRL-05-16-2015-PTR" (alternately, search on XDA and find that tool yourself)
Load up the tool, hit accept, then choose option T4 (not T1-3, T4)
If you were successful, it will slowly begin copying over files and having its way with your tablet, and eventually some little white text will appear on your Tablet screen. Soon, ClockwordMod Recovery will start up.
From here, go to Mounts and Storage. Make sure /system is not mounted, and External SD is mounted. Wipe the /system partition, just to be sure. And again, make sure it's not mounted.
Go back to the main CWM screen, and choose "install zip from sd card", and then the option for the external sd.
Find and flash the update.zip file (this will give your cleared out tablet Android 5.1)
Now find and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Go back to the main menu, and Wipe Cache Partition.
Back at the main menu, Reboot System Now.
If all went well and I didn't totally screw up this guide, your newly rooted tablet should boot up. It may appear to be stuck on the Dell loading screen a while, but it's not. Give it time, and Lollipop will come right up.
From here, download SuperUser and BusyBox from Google Play, if either of those things aren't present on your tablet. Now take advantage of Titanium Backup to remove all that unwanted crapware, and Greenify (at least) to keep those pesky apps at bay.
Enjoy! If this worked, please let me know. As I said, this is what worked for me - but everybody's situation is different, and I'm sorry if this did not work for you. Obligatory I am not responsible if your device bricks, dies or otherwise craps the bed. Use this guide at your own risk.

A side note: a few of those unbricking guides tried to have me use the adb shell to send the system image to the device, but I didn't find that necessary. Just flashing update.zip with CWM got me far enough along to get the tablet running. I'm not sure if that will come back to bite me in the ass, but hopefully not.

This is fantastic. Can you verify build and firmware versions?
I haven't tried to go back to Stagefright yet. Right now:

Force of habit with the XDA premium mobile app.
There is a specific version number for firmware that will indicate if the post-Stagefright firmware is installed. Go in to the My Dell app, and from the top right-hand corner, select Device Info from the list of options.
See the attached screenshot for reference.
Hi John,
thank you for your work. I unlocked my device, but it won't let me get past step 23. What do you mean by turning off? Holding the off button for ten seconds? Holding it shortly, then select shut down? One more thing: It asks me whether I like to proceed with the image on my 7840.

The boot state he's talking about usually has your device appearing in Device Manager as "Intel Mooresfield Device". It's a maintenance mode for firmware flashing, etc.
A little trivia: the Dell Venue 8 7840 was Intel's initial foray into Android-on-Intel with its newer x86 boards. The Venue (along with the Lenovo Yoga 2 series) are fortunate enough to have this mode. That's why they're "unbrickable" to a large extent. The Venue was a joint venture with Intel's teams and is still their promoted flagship device for devs hopping on to the platform.
So how do I make it work? I didn't find a "Intel Mooresfield Device" in the device manager, but other entries for the tablet.
Settings: Tablet: OEM Unlocking on, USB debugging on
Computer: running Phone Flash Tool Lite. NOT running any other phone related stuff (e.g. ADB) after 2nd try.
A little more trivia: I actually won my tablet at an Intel fair stand, it had a developer sticker on it's back

CONGRATS ON THAT WIN! Which OS are you using do this?
Thanks! Best win since winning a sleigh as a child!
I'm using Windows 10 64, all updates installed .
Is there any other way to get that info? I went a little nuts when I got root and wiped out a lot of the dell software including my dell.
I'm still stuck at step 23, does anyone know how to get past it?
I'm stuck at 23/24 as well... my device goes black and the flash tool starts trying to do something then starts erroring out with connection failed messages before it finally gives up. Does this tool not work with Windows 10 64bit?

I have switched OEM Unlock on in the Dev Options...... I have another Venue 8 that it worked fine on. I have no idea what the issue is..
I found my issue. I was on the old firmware which did not support the unlock.
On that note why can we not just perm flash a recovery now that we have an unlocked bootloader?

Works great. I was able to follow directions as noted. Worked on Windows 10 X64, and turned off the power button by menu after 2 seconds running the Intel update, and when tablet was fully updated with latest Dell Firmware.

I got an update for the Dell firmware. Is it something to install or avoid due to bootlooping and stuffs?

I'd avoid updating for now.
Not sure where to ask this... how can I install permanent CWM (or TWRP) recovery on my 7840? I saw the other thread about CWM 6.0.x but saw no mention of which models of Venue it actually worked on and don't want to brick my device trying it...
