samsung s5 G900A 4.4.2 (kitkat) root help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so i have looked for almost 2 whole days for answers before finally making an account here (and stop being a lurker for some time). I have a samsung galaxy s5 with 4.4.2 (kitkat) OS, model G900A (that means from ATT) and the kernel was made in jul 22, 13:58, 2014. which means i cant use towelroot for whatever reason. my sim card is metroPCS though and i have no warranty so all i care about is not bricking my phone without a way to get it back, cus i dont have another 400 to drop on a phone. i have rooted a phone before so i know alittle about this stuff but im not an expert. through reading it seems i have to flash my kernel with an old version and root it, then bring it back to normal. the closest i ever got to actually doing this was with the help of this site " w0lfdroid(dot)com/2014/09/TowelRoot-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-S5-and-Note3-Android-4.4.2-NF-or-Later.html ". problem is the file that is for the ROOT link for the G900A does not work so i need either a new link or a new way to root. i figured this would be the fastest way to get that.
even though i do have a bit of knowledge i see that others dont so if someone dose decide to help me i would like a good step by step process explaining things that a normal person just walking into this wouldnt get. because not everyone looks up their stuff and thats not their fault its alot of research just to take of bloat ware potentially.
thank you in advace

1st Root 8 months ago,Now having issues, need suggestions with updating.

Back around April or May thanks to you folks here, i was able to root both mine and my fiance's Lg thrives (at&t) but with ST sim cards.Used the Gingerbreak on it and did the whole guide etc etc..Very greatful
After that i didnt keep up with it,and both myself and my fiance have ignored all the updates in fear that ST would find out or something which i now know wont happen.
I never flashed any custom roms or anything..We just wanted to be able to have the phone with the basics.
The phones are really acting up now.Dropping calls (my fiance's calls drop everytime)
Over at HF they suggested coming back here and do some reading..
My issue is that there are so many options i dont know where to start.
I am hoping for a suggestion,on a custom rom thats easy and basic.
I honestly dont remember if i have to re-root, or what.I totally forget the concept here.I dont need rooting instructions,or how to actually do any of it..
I moreso just could use someone to tell me the process.Like first root it with this etc, then put this rom on etc etc.
I would be so very appreciative. You guys rock here!

trouble rooting

Hey I read some place that I could root my 1717 running 4.1.2 without a computer.using my sd card. I have already tried all the one click apks. I know it said something about a app I could get in play store to use from my phone by chain fire. Could someone fill me in on the correct steps so I don't brick my phone. Sorry I'm new at all this and have no access to a P.C , Thanks in advance for any help its means a great deal to those of us that are just learning!

Ya that's what I'm beginning to fear, after a little more investigation I found out chain fires mobile odin is the app I was talking about but is able to flash from your phone but not root.must already be rooted to use.
yes I have already tried it, and tried make it rain. And have tried every other one click method that is out there I have been searching everything for like a week now my phone was rooted using the application before but then I done the update from 4.0 4 to 4. 1. 2 and unrooted it and now it will not let any application root it again without a computer I guess unfortunately I do not have access to a computer so I guess it's time to pinch pennies and buy a laptopbut. thanks for your reply.

I mean I've been known to be wrong plenty of times in my life so I could be wrong about this also. But I really don't look for them to push the 5.0 update to us because our phones were brought out in 2012 so there almost 3 years old and they look at that like its a old device that is becoming obsolete. So I think the last update may be our last one but like I said don't hold me to that because I've been known to be wrong before. But if it happens it will be a surprise to me.
you know the last reply I got to my post about asking if I thought they would push the 5.0 update to us got me thinking if I have to spend a bunch of money on a new computer just to be able to root this phone then I may as well go ahead and update and buy me a new phone seeing how this phone is now approximately 3 years old. So has anyone have any opinion or a word of advice on a nice smartphone that is easily to root without a PC and rivals that of the new Samsung models if Samsung is going to start putting lock strap loaders and other fixes and technology in the phones to keep us from rooting them then I don't think I will buy Samsung devices anymore. And switch to something else so does anybody have a idea on what one of the top phones would be to switch to that is easily to root?

Any means of getting HyperDrive?

Model SCH-I545/OS: 5.0.1 Lollipop/Baseband v: I545VRUGOF1/Kernel v: 3.4.0/Build #: LRX22C
I just want to know if there is any means at all to get any 4.4.X/anything that will make this compatible with SS?
I had HyperDrive on my SGS3 & loved it and, in the end, I would like to have it on this, if, at all, possible...
I was on 4.4.2 KitKat when I originally bought it, rooted it with KingRoot and, as mentioned in one of my past posts, a friend upgraded to this "Lollipop crap" and I hate it!
Is there any means at all of getting SS or whatever it may take to get Hyperdrive KK RLS21 even through Odin or flashing anothe ROM through FlashFire then proceeding from there to Odin?
I just don't care right now or am I stuck on Lollipop and having to find a FF/Lollipop based ROM?
fwiw, I also had kitkat when i bought these 2 phones for $600/ea, both kept tricking us, that little nag that keeps appearing, and occassionally looks a little different, which is also boobytrapped, you find ways of disabling it, then it disables your disable and you get scr* into taking the update. I was pretty new to android when i got the phones, but one of the 1st things i read, stick with kitkat, don't let that little b* update itself. But it's smarter than i am apparently.
My versions are very similar to yours- 1545vrug0f1, 5.01 (thanks to samsung scr* us), 3.40, lrx22c
They scr* us into taking the update, and then they scr* us into not being able to either go back to the original or something better (CM ideally). I didn't know better at the time, i should have taken the time to read more, this company doesn't deserve to be the multibillion dollar conglomerate it is, but people keep buying the new stuff without reading first (fool me once...). I'll never buy another samsung thingamajig.
Ya, I used to love Samsung's Galaxy S series phones! My first smartphone was the SGS1 way back around 2010 then, never had the S2, I had 2 S3's, now the S4 and can honestly say this crap they're pulling now is really making me think twice about whether or not they're my favorite smartphone company any more!
No way to go back to kitkat
Thx for the confirmation, I kinda figured as much but wanted to be sure.
fwiw, some people are insisting that it can be done, confirmation anyone?

Does anyone how many friggin times i have to keep answering stupid questions before posting? Is it intended to be a pain in the ass to post? The obvious answer, spam, but this is beyond stupid. I have an idea, i'll stop posting..
It has been confirmed on mine, SCH-I545 on 5.0.1 (OF1), downloaded KingRoot directly to my phone and ran it, worked like a charm, just sucks I can't go back to 4.4.2!
Tempted to try, but reading of too many phones trashed. Unreal that sprint can screw people over intentionally and get away with it. No doubt they've protected themselves (fine print etc), but that's what makes it manipulative. Thanks for confirming.

Problem rooting S5 active

I've recently upgraded phones and have decided to root my S5 active. Unfortunately, I am not running the NE4 version of the firmware, therefore, I am not able to use Towelroot. I've done quite a bit of digging trying to solve the problem to no avail. I've tried using Odin to either downgrade my firmware or install a custom/rooted firmware but Odin gives an "Auth" fail. I've done as much research as I can into why I get an auth fail and nothing I've seen suggested has helped. I've tried installing firmware through the SD card, looked into sideloading firmware but that seems to be only for updates as far as I can tell. I am well and truly at a loss and was hoping someone could help.

I hate to say it but you are in the same boat I am. There is no root for that. They patched the hole and prevent downgrading.
The only ones that might have been able to break it walked away from Samsung years ago. Sorry. Don't feel bad your not alone.
Surely to god someone SOMEWHERE has figured something out? Maybe I can take it to best buy and have them downgrade the software for me?

It won't work. The updated bootloader prevents it being downgraded. It would take a jtag machine and Samsung to do it.
No. No one has. You have to remember that the best walked away from Samsung. Anyone that tries to break it gets hit with a C&D order.
No I had no idea about that :/
Towel root has something interesting that I saw

Security concerns. Mind you that is a personal thing and many people are fine with it. Just not me.
So maybe I could find someone who knows more about them to see if they can do something about this?

Considering no one has been able to be able to crack Samsung locks I wouldn't count on it. I would just accept that it is a locked down device. This is the reason developers Dont buy Samsung devices anymore.
I've shot the creator of towelroot an email asking about mod strings. Hopefully he can explain it a little and help me out. If I find something out I'll let you know but I still am hopeful someone has SOME solution for me. I'm desperate

Well to be honest. If root is something you need then you should avoid Samsung.
If you find something then cool. I'll never use it. The security issues could get me in trouble keeping with my job so it's out of the question.
The only reason I'm trying so hard is because this is my old phone and I can't really afford much of anything else. If I felt like I had another option, I'd go for it. I have no security concerns, I'm not even particularly concerned about bricking my old phone. If I can't figure out how to root it, it might as well be a brick anyway for how useful it is.

It's still a good device. Even stock. The security concerns are there you just don't understand them completely. As an example. They store your IMEI. Which can be used to clone your device. As such when the oem sees 2 IMEI the same it kills both devices. Making them both not work.
I'll be honest for that device you are gonna waste more time trying to find away around it. ( it will be blocked again with the 6.0 update that is planned for it) then you would just using it as is. Mine is completely stock and works as it should.
I'm honestly not worried about losing the device to something like that. I'm not storing anything particularly interesting on it but I need the root to do what I want. I won't be updating the firmware at all so it'll never go to 6.0

Well then good luck. You will need it. Also keep in mind with those root you will have to reroot every reboot. That's if he can find a new whole Samsung has not patched, which is becoming harder with monthly security updates.
It is well accepted around here that sooner or later only nexus devices will be rootable or have any development done for it.
If I had known that earlier, it could've saved me a lot of hassle but this is where I am right now. My new phone is the S7 edge and I really want to use the S5 active for something else.
No one knows of anyone I can even pay to look into maybe even changing the firmware? No way to load custom firmware at all?

No. Samsung locked it down. They made it so the bootloader can't be downgraded. You have to understand most of the real good developers walked away from Samsung and now refuse to work on their devices or even buy them. When it comes to developers Samsung is at the top of the list right next to Xiaomi of devices not to get. More and more teams are even dropping all support for Samsung devices. It's just the way it is really.
And since it's a phone the hardware can't be changed either?

It can be but you would have to find a device that has the old 4.4.4 rom and then swap mother boards. Not easy at all. Let alone the min it gets connected to a cell network it will update anyway.
I know it's a hard thing to do but I would get used to it mainly with the new device you just. Got.

Wanting to purchase a lg g3... Have some questions

So the only/main reason I want the phone is to be able to root, I been stuck with this galaxy s6 that cant be for over a year.. Every phone I have every had since the eris has been rooted.
I am getting extremely confused with what I am reading.
So the newer lg g3 cant be rooted or downgraded? Any sources for the older lg g3s that can be?
Was looking on ebay but every single phone has k in the model number in description...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I guess one thing that would really help my search is to figure out when the K versions were released.... Anyone know ?
Thanks

I hate to say it, but the model K can only be rooted, from what I've read, by Kingroot. And that's a temporary root. When you reboot, you'll have to root again.
Because there is no way to downgrade to anything prior to Marshmallow (due to a firmware change apparently hence the K model number), you cannot use 10b tot, etc to downgrade.
Also, since this phone is 2 years old, no one is actively looking for an exploit on this. It isn't really worth it unfortunately, but that's how it is with all phones. Eventually, people move on from them because they are old. I will say this, I've been running on stock, unrooted for about a year now and it works just fine. I do run Greenify (I have the donated version), and it definitely also helps with battery life. So, even unrooted stock is pretty good on this phone. I've uninstalled as much of the bloatware (mostly the games) as possible. And for those applications that I cannot uninstall, I've disabled them where possible which can be done in the app manager.
But model K phones do not have the ability to be downgraded. There isn't anyway around this that I know of and believe me, people have tried.

The details of the phone might just be the auto generated stuff ebay puts on there. I would ask the seller to look at the actual label under the battery. You could try swappa too, i just got a good Note 4 from a seller on there. Ebay is hard to dig through and find something good, lots of refurbished phones being sold as "new".
Thanks peeps learned some info I did not know.
I guess I am looking for root and recovery.(Mostly development stuff/being able to install roms) I am staying far away from the K version.
I been messaging people on ebay for the past 2 days.. 40 messages 5 replies :/
Ended up finding 2 without the k
