Hi everyone,
I'm pretty confused of the difference between a nandroid backup and Titanium backup.
My understanding is:
nandroid = kind of a restore point for the phone with all system, apps and user data.
Titanium backup = same thing, but with options to choose what to back up.
So why do you need 2 of the same thing if they both perform exactly the same thing? Eventually, we'll probably be using the backup to restore those datas in case we want to flash new ROMs.
Am I missing something here?
Thank you for the info!

You don't need two of the same thing. I haven't used titanium but nandroid is a, if you will, what-you-see-is-what-you-get backup....what I mean by this is it will back up your phone in the exact state it is...you can't choose to exclude this or that, etc. I prefer mybackup pro because the one time I used titanium I couldn't figure out what to do cuz the GUI was so scrub. That's just me tho.

I think the main difference is that nandroid will restore everything back the way it was through recovery. With Titanium Backup, you can backup your apps+data and restore them if you flash a new ROM. So like if you upgrade to the latest version of CM6 or Liberated, you can carry your apps over. If you restore the nandroid, it will restore the old ROM too.
Thanks for the response guys.
@blindfusion: I think you just pointed out the main difference there. I didn't think of it that way, the old ROM would also be flashed!
@zervic: Now I think I'll need to get my hands on a backup app. Will check out backup Pro!
Thanks again!
under nandroid/advanced restore, there's an option to restore data. not sure how it differs from titanium. i think titanium let's you pick the apps to back up. nandroid just backs up everything.
So does nandroid also give us the option to restore data (ie. Saved apps, datas, etc) under advanced without flashing the old ROM back in?
For example if i were to flash a newer ROM (FR007 for instance), then i'd be able to have access and restore ALL the backed up data in nandroid? And have a newer version of the OS?
Am i missing something here? I guess i just want to keep my aria light and avoid installing apps i absoloutely do not need. To keep it zippy and maintain precious internal memory.
Thanks again everyone!

that's how i've restored apps/data after updating rom.
Thanks for the confirmation Darren!
Just to confirm that means that if I use titanium backup, it can backup the exact same things as Nandroid backup but you can use it for your new ROM?
No titanium backs up app and their data only.nandroid is a full system image.

Always make both before flashing a new ROM. If everything goes according to plan, run Titanium to restore all your apps into the new ROM. If something goes wrong, you can use Nandroid to restore your phone to pre-flash state.
Also, you should copy the Nandroid file to your computer. If your phone is ever lost or stolen and you get a new one, you can restore it to your old phone's image.
NANDroid backup is a complete image of your phone: the OS, apps, data, everything. So if you screw up your phone, like making it unbootable, or accidentally wiping it clean, you can restore the image and everything will be back to the way it was when you did the backup.
Titanium Backup is an app in your OS that backs up other apps, their data, and some system data / user settings. It's usually used, for example, for restoring apps and their data after a clean install, where you've wiped everything clean.
The two options are fundamentally different, but do have some overlap.
I've never got nandroid backup to work for me personally. Always comes up, "backup not found".

glad i read this thread. it clear up a lot of questions i have.
the only other question i want to ask is what is difference between ClockWorkMod and Nandroid backup?
I heard CWM is an Nandroid backup so does this mean Nandroid backup is a general term for system back up ? or is it an actual program?

You heard wrong about ClockworkMod. ClockworkMod is a recovery. Nandroid backup is not an actual program, but a backup of your entire system which can be done through ClockworkMod (it's an option).
thanks. that answer all of my backup questions.

Sorry still unclear for me, so if i have CWM i will go to recovery and there i can performe the backup right?
that copies the nandroid to my Sd card? and that image is flasheable image? is that correct? sorry if any of those is a stupid question :S
Edit: Nevermind, i found a guide here that is good for newbies like me, but thanks anyway
Sorry for necro'ing this thread, but at least it's better than making a new one!
From what I've read in this thread, I understand a bit better about the difference.
I've also read that it's important to save nandroid back up on PC in case you lose your phone.
Therein lies my next 2 questions.
1. If I want to use a nandroid backup on the replacement, it should be exactly the same phone, otherwise there might be a problem with the compatibility of the ROM stored in the nandroid and the phone. Right?
2. If I want to use a titanium backup on the replacement, I can use it on any phone, except I should not restore the SYSTEM apps. Right?
If (2) is correct, then we should also keep a titanium backup on the PC?
Part of my reason is also, I plan to switch from Desire HD to SGS3 and I hope to keep both pretty similar with slightly different interface. I plan to root my SGS3 and use titanium to restore some things from my DHD to SGS3. Using a nandroid on the new SGS3 will be a FATAL mistake right?
I know this is not a DHD forum, but the technicalities are the same, so I hope it's no offense asking these questions here!

Oops forgot to add!
I'm using 4ext instead of CWM. In a brief reading, I've found that 4ext has it's own backup which is not nandroid. But backing up from 4ext is the same as doing a nandroid backup? In which case, every "nandroid" in the earlier post can just be replaced with "4ext backup" accordingly.
If this is a stupid question, just scold me, I'm still learning and asking as I'm reading. Just trying not to create new threads.

1. Correct. Its highly likely that there will be issues (device won't boot) on almost every occasion.
2. Yes. You may also want to exclude "app data," since it may cause a bootloop or system instability (on some occasions). You could keep a Tb backup if you wish.
It won't be a fatal mistake, but the device will just not boot up (soft-brick). You would have to boot into recovery mode a restore/flash a rom made for the device.
Yes, that's correct.
Hi there! Forgive my noobishness but I have a (seemingly) dumb question....
When a developer says "A Full Wipe is REQUIRED before flashing this rom," how do I go about doing so? I don't want to lose root but I'm not entirely sure what this means. Does it mean that I should restore the backup I made from ROM manager (when I first rooted it)?
I've tried reading up on the forums, but I think this question is so basic that nobody has asked/answered it in a foolproof manner.
Thanks, and good night!
When you click to install a ROM through ROM manager, it'll ask you if you want to do a backup and/or wipe. Practically always do a backup, and generally do a wipe between different ROMs. Usually upgrading a ROM doesn't need a wipe (unless it's from a major version ... Froyo -> Gingerbread, etc ... or if they specifically tell you to.)
To wipe through ClockworkMod Recovery, just select "wipe data/factory reset".
And I always backup before wiping. That means your phone will go to factory condition, so if I forget about my texts or an app I had or whatever, it's useful to be able to go back.
Just as a heads up: Since wiping deletes everything off of your phone, you might want to consider getting Titanium Backup and backing up the apps you want and the data they have. A good example of this is SMS texts. Some people like to keep them.
Hey all! I'm new to android and am ready to flash a rom. However, I am concerned that i will lose some gamesave/App data.. I have used titanium backup to backup all system and app data with the batch feature.. Can I just run the restore all feature to get everything back the way it was? Will i have to replace all my widgets?? It just seems to simple! Thanks!
Titanium backup will restore your apps and data.....and system data. It is very important that when you restore, if you have backed up any system data, do not restore that. The rom you flash will have its own system data, so you don't wan't to load your old data over that. Force close city. Just restore "user apps" and it will be just like you left it. As far as your widgets, yes, you will have to restore them. All your wifi access, wallpaper, etc is linked to your google account (if you have it checked under settings>privacy.)
another approach, slightly different, but can accomplish the same end goal is using nandroid provided in the custom recovery. i personally prefer nandroid as the source code is available online (i.e. everybody can view exactly what operations it is performing) where as titantium backup does not publish its source code.
before flashing a rom, i'd do a full nandroid backup. after you've flashed the rom, your data *should* still be intact as most ROM's are not scripted to wipe your personal data when you flash them. if for some odd reason your personal data is erased from a ROM flash, which it shouldnt, you can chose to nandroid restore just the /data partition, which is where all custom settings and user data are kept, other than a few which store on the /sdcard.
hope that makes sense and good luck!
Backing up entire phone with locked bootloader?
Sorry if this is a superfluous question. Yes, I'm rooted but my bootloader is locked because I've zero confidence I can get my phone repaired in my country(not US!) should anything go wrong. The tech support in my country tend to be really strict and very thorough in checking things out, so any excuses won't fly. I'm aware, btw, that the bootloader controls a set of fuses and unlocking it burns them. Trying to relock the bootloader is only superficial since there's no way a software can solder back or replace those fuses.
Thing is: how do I get about backing up my entire phone(user settings, apps, apps settings, etc.) without unlocking the bootloader? I've been reading on this and that but I'm still unsure if Titanium Pro is as capable as Nandroid. Some people said you can use Titanium Pro but others caution against using it for backing up system settings because it can apparently screw up your phone.
I even read about something called bootstrapping but it seems that any possible apks I could try, are probably long outdated and prone to crashing since they won't have any support for Gingerbread and certain features.
Any advice? Sorry for asking such a dumb question when everyone is happily unlocking their bootloaders. If this can't be done, it's okay. I'll just have to bear with the tedious issue of setting up my phone all over again.
Use titanium backup. Only thing it doesn't backup is the os. Everything else will be saved to the sdcard.

TiBu will back up your apps, app data, system apps, system data, but is nothing like a nandroid. A nandroid backup will create a full backup from which you can restore your phone to the state it was in when you created the backup.
A TiBu backup will not screw up your phone. The problems arise if you flash a different ROM, and then restore system data from your TiBu backups.
What I would do is backup everything with TiBu, but never restore system data from the backup. I routinely restore app data such as GoSMS, Enhanced Email, games, etc. without problems. I don't restore system apps unless I absolutely have to restore something which is broken, and I never restore system data.
Hope this helps.
On my stock rooted ROM, after wiping data, cache and dalvik cache, I've created a Nandroid Backup.
My question is, if someone restores this backup to there phone, which is the same as mine, will it have any of my information, or could it possibly cause any problems?
I was simply going to upload it, so that if anybody has any problems installing the latest OTA or hasn't got a working Nandroid backup, they can use it.

Em well first off, if you done the wipe data ect first then you will not have a NANDROID Backup as there is nothing there to back up,
Second i wouldn't recommend anyone but yourself use the back up but if its between friends ect from with in the phone in settings go to factory reset and that way your data will be clear for the most part and safe to share with friends you trust in-case anything is left behind but i would not release to public in any capacity and then proceed to create your NANDROID backup from within your recovery app.
If you really had to do it that way, you would want to create a NANDROID backup for yourself, reboot your phone go to settings factory reset, then boot back to recovery make another NANDROID Backup (This one for Friends clear of your data)

The whole point of me doing the wipe data etc first, was to clear any personal data from the phone.
The Nandroid backup was so that there was a working stock rooted rom.
My question should have been does it keep any data that cannot be manually deleted. e.g. Serial numbers etc....But I think I found the answer. Apparently it does and it can cause problems when restoring.
The only reason I was going to do it was because, I have seen a couple of people using the HTC One X, that are trying to get from stock rooted 1.26, to stock rooted 1.28 and this backup would get them there.
Backup
If you take the boot.img and system.img from your backup and then use dsixda's kitchen to create a flashable rom.
