So long story short: Finally got CWM installed on the MS769 from Metro by using some chinese root program to get root, installed busybox, then used the L9 Recovery installer from artas to get CWM on there. So then I try to install bobzhome's P769 CM ROM and met with undesirable results.
Here is CWM installed by the L9 Recovery Installer v1.5:

The rom I'm trying to install:
The "This package is for "p769,p760,u2" devices; this is a "p940" error
This most certainly not a p940! So I suspect CWM is a bit outdated. But how can I get the most up to date CWM when I've already used the most up-to-date L9 Recovery Installer? I've tried other flashing programs like flashr and CWM's official rom manager on Google Play but I get met with the dead android picture when trying to boot into the new recovery I flashed.
I also tried opening up the CM ROM and finding the script that does this check and disabled it. But then shortly I get this error regarding setting recursive metadata. I googled "setting recursive metadata" error and folks just say to update CWM. So I guess I gotta really get CWM updated.
Is this a dead end for me? Should I just toss this phone in a pit of lava?
Have you unlocked the bootloader? If not, you can't install CM.
The CWM you've installed is a 2nd-init recovery. You need to unlock the bootloader to install a) a proper recovery, and b) to install ROMs that aren't based on stock

Thanks for the response. Alas, I feared the worst. I had that feeling since there were several people saying there's absolutely no way to unlock the bootloader, and that there was even a petition to unlock it.
It can be unlocked, using a 910k cable and plenty of patience.
Until then, you can only run stock ROMs, or modified stock ROMs such as Kumakan or UltraROM. Try them out, they may suit your needs if you don't want to go through the BL unlock process.

Ok so this may have been posted before but I've been searching and can't find anything.
So I got my note 2 when they released and I did the first "root" method available which I think was odin. Not really root with a custom recovery however I don't think. See the following screenshot to see what I'm currently running. Its been fine until now so I never re flashed anything or install twrp or anything.

Lately its been running slow so I want to fully root and install something along the lines of the latest Clean Rom. I had cleanrom on my Rezound and I love his roms.
Only reason I'm making this thread is because I'm not sure where to start because I don't think I'm stock yet I'm not "really" rooted.
Dont want to mess up my device.
Thanks!!

Sounds like you are rooted, but your bootloader is still locked. In order to flash ROMs on Verizon you will need to unlock the bootloader (unless you did that via Odin the first time around). From those screenshots you won't be able to tell if you have unlocked the bootloader...as far as I know the only want to check is to boot into recovery. If you see TWRP or CWM you are set...if you get the stock recovery you need to follow Adam Outler's original unlock method as you are on baseband VRALJB. To access recovery power off the device and then press volume up + power button + home button simultaneously. Whatever boots up will tell you what you need to know.
stary by reading the stickies.
Yea I believe I'm still on the stock recovery.

Hi guys. First post to the forum, been lurking for years, just registered.
I recently updated my phone with the update that Samsung kept bothering me about every 2 hours or so. And It has messed my phone up, it's slow, it drags. It doesn't even show the clock on my lock screen without thinking about it for about 10 seconds. Train wreck.
I've rooted, installed custom recovery, and loaded custom roms on my Galaxy S i9000 and on my grouper Nexus 7. I kinda get how all this works, I'm not a total newb, but with this phone I am at a dead end and i've tried everything I know, and a bunch more tricks I learned here and nothing is working.
My Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3: Canadian (Bell) version SGH-I747M, supposedly the same as the S3 AT&T,

I had to use zadig to replace my drivers for Heimdall
Heimdall will sucessfully flash clockwork recovery, but it refuses to install my CM rom. I haven't tried any other roms, but from what I've read in the forum here, it doesn't seem to matter what rom you use, it just wont do it.
I get Assert, bootloader errors when trying to install from zip in Clockwork Recovery. tried the fix here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41503727
and it does not work. Odin just says "FAILED" right away.
I thought maybe if I just rooted the phone first, I could at least flash a custom recovery and not have it over written everytime I boot.
I tried CF-AutoRoot, Odin says success, but nothing changes on my phone.
I tried OneClickRoot which worked wonders on my GS i9000 back in the day. No success.
I have tried CM Installer to do it automated, It says success, but no change.
People have reported that Knox may be the problem, but as far as I can tell I don't have it on my phone.
I've been working on this for a day and a half and all I've managed to do is factory reset my phone about 12 times. I need help.. I don't know what to do. Has anybody managed to root their phone or install a custom recovery or rom with a GS3 running 4.4?

Wrong forum myfriend post your question here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att <<
Hello Guys,
This evening I decided to root my phone and install Jelly Beans ROM for Samsung Verizon Galaxy S4, I began by rooting my phone using Towelroot, everything was great so far. Then I tried to install a CWm Recovery but I failed doing that, I followed a youtube video but I kept getting "loki aboot version does not match device".
I read somewhere else that I could use Safestrap as recovery, I followed all the instructions installed busybox etc...
I finally went into recovery mode and Installed Jely Beans V7. The installer ran fine and I followed all the options the installation finished and it was time to reboot, I hit reboot and the phone never came back.
All I see now is a Samsung boot screen with an unlocked padlock in the bottom, the phone keeps rebooting and I had a hard time getting into recovery, when I finally did it seems like a different recovery and only gives me the options to apply updates and to wipe data.
The android robot is dead with a red triangle.
Please help what can I do???
I take it you missed the part that you can only flash non-touchwiz roms & cwm on phones with an mdk bootloader?
Plenty of threads on here on how to fix this, I'm on my phone otherwise I'd post links

You have flash the same firmware you had before you started.
Do you know what build you were on?

Sweet thanks finally fixed it! using Full-Wipe NG6
I'm currently on CM 13.0-20160809-NIGHTLY-onyx and I've tried to flash three different Roms on my phone (Two different versions of cm14 and OOS3) with TWRP. But every time I get the error message attached in the screenshot.
Now, I've seen a few people online having similar problems, but it was mostly for cm12 and the suggested fixes are not really helpful for my situation.
I've somehow lost my stock backup so I'm kinda lost right here.

In general Error 7 usually means you're using the wrong version of TWRP. I'm still using Blu_Sparks version for the new bootloader.

You need to upgrade your bootloader and TWRP.you are using very old CM and now everything is changed so upgrade your boot loader and recovery.
I already use TWRP 3.0.2-0 which is the newest version according to TWRP Manager.
How do I upgrade my bootloader?
Edit: So I found this way to do it :Link
The thing is: it says the bootloader must be unlocked, but if I type "fastboot devices" I get nothing back. "adb devices works. I'm pretty sure that my bootloader is unlocked since I have a custom rom and my device is rooted but I'm not sure if I have activated the CM recovery option in the developer settings ever since.
I really don't wanna brick my phone so I'm not sure if I should blindly follow the steps in the link above.

"fastboot devices" doesn't work unless you are in the bootloader
I would like to install LineageOS 14.1 on my S4 but I can't get TWRP to install. I'm running the new VRSGPL1 build and have it rooted. Also tried to install TRWP on rooted OF1 but couldn't make it work. I started with a completely reset and wiped phone each time. I used Wondershare to root, unlock the bootloader, and install SuperSU. I then try to use the official TWRP app to install. It says it succeeded but after reboot, I get the message that the phone didn't start correctly and that i need to use the Verizon tool to repair. I've tried MANY different methods to make it work so i'm at the end of my rope. I'm hoping one of you Gurus out there can help. Thanks.

You can only use Flashfire (v.53 or lower with this device) with a locked bootloader. You can't install TWRP or any other custom recovery. Don't keep trying because you will brick your phone.
PS- Wondershare nor any other tool (available now at least) will unlock your bootloader on this device.

Doesn't it mean the bootloader is unlocked if i get the screen with Samsung and an unlocked lock on boot?

No that means you're rooted
Ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I installed Flashfire. I tried v .52 first and it wouldn't start up so i uninstalled and installed v .53. It starts up and lets me choose my zip files to flash. I click on flash and it starts the process giving me the screen loading files then goes blank. I've tried changing different settings but i still get the blank screen. Any ideas?
