I figured since the Max is not getting Lollipop, I might as well finally get around to rooting it so I can tweak it a bit, and maybe put a 5.1 rom on it later. I know the devices bootloader cannot be unlocked using the HTC tool. I tried unlocking and rooting the phone using Rumrunner, but that also failed. I got an odd error stating that the device was not rooted and was running an unsecure kernel. I have tried Googling the question and just came up with Rumrunner. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

You can use sunshine to unlock boot loader, s-off and root. Cost $25 though. Only way.

Last night i had to pony up 25 bucks for sunshine to root my insurance replacement.. The ads were driving me crazy

I'm also looking to do the same thing (upgrade my OS for security reasons mostly). It seems CM is the most supported ROM for the MAX, what's the steps? Sunshine to unlock bootloader, s-OFF, and root? Then install safestrap or whatever ROM manager is needed? Then flash CM to a open slot?
Thanks everybody. I actually installed an app called Weaksauce2 that I read about on this forum. It apparently roots the device at each boot up. Afterwards, I then had the idea to run Rumrunner again. It actually finished without an error, but I am not sure if it did what it was supposed to do! Before I ran Rumrunner again, the device would hang up and restart when I went into the Play Store. It seems to be working now, but you cannot update the Supersu binary.

You gotta boot into recovery. You can usually do that by telling it to restart and holding volume down. Then you can see if you have s-OFF and unlocked and all that jazz. You need it to be unlocked to install ROMs

Thanks! Will take a look when I get home.
It is still locked and s-on. :crying: I guess I will leave it as it is. It is not worth it to me to spend any money on it right now, so I will skip Sunshine.

No. That is for the Sprint version of the phone. Mine is Verizon and that unlock utility does not work. I have it rooted using Weaksauce2 and it is doing OK! Not bad for a temp root solution!
The only way I found to perma root was to use Sunshine. Yeah I know it costs $25, but it works and you can unlock bootloader and S-off the phone too.
If anyone is around York, pa I have a java card which will s-off any version of this phone. Well any htc phone for that matter.

My phone was rooted w/ s-off, I had to take it to the Verizon store today for a warranty replacement so I unrooted and got it back to s-on before I went. They gave me a new phone and when I got home I noticed they had applied the OTA already before I left the store, must have been when they were activating the phone and new SIM.
So I have 2.11.605.9 and I try to run Revolutionary to get s-off and root and it stops saying it could not get root.
Am I stuck waiting for the Revolutionary tool to be updated or is there something else I can do?

So when you say you can't get "root" do you mean it won't flash their custom bootloader?
Have you tried using the manual method?
Has anyone else tried this to confirm if the exploit has been patched?
I guess I could be a guinea pig and try it out for myself. Of course, if I can't root that will really put a damper on my ROM update

Ok, took the plunge and tried the htcdev.com method but the Thunderbolt is not supported. It returns a "token" that is necessary to complete the unlock process that says "invalid token - device not supported". I guess I have to wait for the folks at Revolutionary to get root back.
If you don't mind having to wipe your phone... You can rooted and on 2.11.605.9... see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20434629&postcount=36

You are correct. The problem I, and a few others, were having was we were unrooted and s-on. The OTA was applied to an already locked bootloader and thus couldn't run Revolutionary to get our phones rooted or s-off. No way I was going to chance taking my phone to the Verizon store with s-off for a warranty issue.

Hey everyone,
Noob here. I've checked out a bunch of stuff on the forums and it seems like the only solution to the OTA 2.11.605.9 blocking of revolutionary is to downgrade to .5
However, I've had my tb for a while and don't want to wipe my contacts and data. Is there a workaround for this? If not, would it be reasonable to expect some kind of fix for the revolutionary method in the near future?
Thanks

So like most users, I was very excited to hear about the ICS leak by Football since I've been waiting MONTHS for some sort of development on that.
Getting impatient on waiting for CM9 and Evervolv builds for the Amaze, I really wanted to try this new leak for T-Mobile. So I figured that in order to do that, I must get S-Off.
It seemed like a tedious process so I've been holding it off for a while. Now that I've got a copper wire and everything, I wanted to do the deed once and for all.
So I accidentally flashed a stock rom (which I thought was a good thing since the instructions said I needed a stock rom), but I seem to have lost root access. Superuser runs, but battery calibration says I need to have root first and Titanium Backup doesn't work. However, my phone still says unlocked and I can still run ClockworkMod Recovery. The S-Off program tells me that there's an error. Is there anyone that can help?

Well you are on T-mobile so you have two choices here. you can S-off if you want to have total freedom or you can revert your phone to stock and relock your bootloader and flash it and then re-unlock again. but remember flashign this without s-off may prevent you from getting s-off later on.

Pretty sure you just use fastboot to lock, open a command prompt with your phone attached in debugging mode, type in fastboot oem lock, then install the stock rom listed in the development section. (If I am wrong on this, someone please feel free to correct me.)
Just my luck that Verizon puts this new OTA out the day before I was going to root this thing! It looks to me like we have no option now to root these updated devices. Anyone have any ideas?

I tried to wipe/factory reset then install stock 2.17.605.2 RUU last night from .exe file. Wouldn't let it load due to updated bootloader. I also tried flashing unlock_code.bin from previous unlock experience with Hasoon2000's toolkit without luck as well as running through mdmower's unlock script with attempt to change CID. Also HTCdev just gives me an error now when trying to get a new unlock token... ugh. I'm guessing I probably need root to modify bootloader to revert to old to unlock it... so probably just screwed until someone smarter figures out a way to unlock the new bootloader...

Hopefully you at least have data service now. Unless you can manage SuperCID, you might be out of luck for a while. I hope I'm wrong about that.
I am now curious if anyone who is s-off installed the OTA (either accidentally or intentionally) and retained s-off. In theory, if you're s-off you can recover from nearly anything. (I will admit that I have absolutely no desire to try it for myself)

join in for the unbelievable ... post2014-OTA [S-OFF] has been achieved
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2664460
Hello to all.
I have not rooted a phone in quite a while, since the original Evo. Here's the rundown of what I've been experiencing lately:
I unlocked the bootloader using the HTC dev method, it went smooth. To obtain s-off (I was on the latest OTA of 3.17.651.5), I attempted rumrunner. Everything went fine until I got an error with rumrunner. I then tried the windroid toolkit, flashed TWRP (v2.7.1.0) which was a success. When I flashed superuser from windroid, it rebooted me to recovery to flash the zip file "superuser.zip", but it did nothing. I looked on this forum and found a supersu zip file. I tried flashing a couple versions of the supersu (1.25, 2.01) but no luck. For every one I attempted to flash, I would get the message that said successful but no s-off. After confirming the flash, it would say "flashing file 1 of 1", but then switch to saying "flashing file 1 of 0". I ended up flashing a rom (CM11-20131217), which put the phone into a bootloop (I got this resolved by downgrading to TWRP 2.6.3.0, flashing the kernel for the CM11, then flashing the rom, which of course still kept me S-on.)
So basically, I have an unlocked bootloader, with TWRP 2.6.3.0 as a recovery, on CM11-20131217 build, yet I'm still S-on. Is there a certain version of supersu or superuser that I should be flashing? How can I achieve S-off?

You have to run Rumrunner again. But flash stock rooted before you do (I don't know if it'll work while on CM).
Thanks for the quick reply. I will give that a shot, hope it does work. Is there a certain version of that I should flash before running rumrunner again?

Okay, thanks!
After getting some time here and there, I attempted to flash a few stock rooted roms with no luck. I'm not sure if it's because of the rom that I am currently on. not s-off or what. A lot of the stock root roms I do find have a requirement that you must be s-off to flash. I even tried running RUU's (4.13.651.4 and 3.17.651.4) for specific roms, but they gave me errors and would not continue each time. I remember when rooting and gaining s-off was much simpler than this lol. I don't even know if it is worth continuing to keep trying.
Check the link below for a ROM that is S-on friendly. Make sure you follow the directions in the thread to get it installed. Once you've done this you can go for S-off, at which time you should be able to flash whatever ROM you'd like.

Thanks for that! It worked with meanbean. I ran rumrunner again and it gave me an error, saying something about an update on rumrunner.us. I gave firewater a shot, and after it said "the first bottle is open...chugging", the screen stays blank for a while and firewater instructs me to try again and ends the process. From what I read last night around my searches, I'm supposed to get a notification on the evo asking for superuser permission but that didn't happen. I'm guessing this is due to the wrong supersu being flashed.
Glad I got a little further, I'm just going to play around with it until something gives and I am s-off
There's a setting in the su app that will let you grant su access to all apps automatically and without a prompt. That should get rid of that problem.
I wouldn't go with those settings for any other purpose though, obviously.

Weaksauce is an exploit for Verizon phones that can't be unlocked with HTC Dev so it's pointless to try it on the EVO LTE.

Also, while you need htc sync manager to unlock your boot loader, it usually really screws with any other adb tools, so uninstall that too.

First thing is that in order to run any RUU device boot loader must be 're-locked to do this enter into fastboot plug in to pc and within your Android unlocker folder that u use to unlock your device hold shift and right click anywhere in the folder to open command window then type : fastboot oem lock . This will lock the bootloader, now you will be able to run RUU. Just keep in mind that you may only go up Android versions levels ,, running RUU will stabilize your device and fixes the sectors which u may have damaged during the moding in the RAM .. Now for obtaining S-OFF the only option for you (since u upgraded) is to use DirtyRacun witch uses Ubuntu Live CD method and it does work. ***Now, if you just want unlocked bootloader with SU permission so u can flash rooms (not firmware or radio) and don't care about S-OFF then let me know to show you the options available at this time .. I repeat *you may only go up in android versions , in case that is necessary to go down then you need to deal with the CID. By switching and modifying the CID only then you are allowed to downgrade the Android Build versions
Dirty Racun isn't the only option for S-off

Excuse my ignorance but but how did you get sprints HTC evo 4g LTE codename jewel to work on at&t. I didn't know you could do that. (hint: are you sure you have the right phone? )

Oh, I'm with Sprint, I was referring to using the wifi from my AT&T router. Sorry for the confusion lol.
ive spent several hours searching xda for methods of s-off and root. its been a while since ive been on an htc device. heres a little info on my device.
Android version - 4.4.2
htc sense version - 6.0
software number - 3.09.605.2
baseband - 1.36.60.0520
build number - 3.09.605.2 cl333209
t6wl pvt ship s-on rh
hboot - -2.49.0000
radio - 1.36.60.0520
from my understanding, i need to get s-off in order to obtain root right? ive tried several methods. all-in-one tools, firewater, temproot, adb, rumrunner, weaksauce, etc.... nothing is working for me. i noticed there was an app called "sunshine" and it seems like it may be the only way but its $25. i wanted to see if i was doing this correctly or not. am i capable of s-off and root with my software on the device? can someone guide me in the right direction please? thanks

If you tried all of the above and didn't get root then yes sunshine is required. That Will turn s off and unlock for you. Then you need to fastboot flash twrp and then flash the latest supersu.zip.
I was hoping that there was another solution besides sunshine. Are there any other devs working on a different method? Just curious though, am I incapable of obtaining s-off on my phone because I'm on 4.4.2
update: im still trying to learn more about why i cant s-off. if i am understanding correctly, since my phone is on 4.4.2, i cannot unlock the bootloader yet. thats why i cant obtain s-off. ive tried with htcdev to unlock the bootloader but thats not working on verizon one max's. is there another way to do so?

For firewater on vzw you use it to do both. You can't unlock prior.

I'll try it again tonight and I'll let you know the results. Does my firmware have anything to do with me having issues on my attempts?

Yes...iirc you can't be on anything newer than 4.4.2 and if you get a whelp message your phone is a newer hardware variant that won't work.

Yeah from what I've been reading, only sunshine can s-off and unlock the boot loader for now. I'm hoping some other dev can come up with a different solution. I don't have a problem paying the $25 to the sunshine developer but I'm a tinkerer. I enjoy tinkering because I get the most out of my phone at no cost. (typically, unless a donation is made.)
flash Viperrom for Verizon then run firewater s-off

How would I be able to flash the rom if I can't get s-off and root?

I'm not sure how different or not Verizon is to Sprint, but here is a guideline that worked for me when I rooted, s-off, unlocked, and everything else. It is by no means perfect, but you should be able to piece it together from the guideline: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2550559

you dont need s-off to root your device ... s-off is an added privledge to an unlocked bootloader .... 1. Unlock bootloader through HTC dev then you can flash any rom you want ... 2. Recommend to viperrom to get s-off 3. To flash a rom you need to replace your recovery mode from stock to a custome recovery for example clockworkmod or TWRP
