How to disable Samsung Text-to-Speech and delete language files - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I use Google's TTS engine, so I thought I could disable Samsung's and get rid of the language files it has downloaded.
Sadly, I can't seem to find the application on the list of installed applications under Application Manager. In fact, I don't know what it's called.
Also, I don't know the location of the language files.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Samsung TTS is called "Samsung text-to-speech engine" under the "All" category for me. I would also like to know how to delete unused language files.

Yeah, it's supposed to be called that way, but I haven't got it under All.
I'm running 5.1.1 (G925IDVU2COGA).

Found it. The name is different because my system language is Spanish. Anyway, it can't be disabled. Maybe if you were rooted you could.
You can "erase data", but in my case the data is 40KB, so I don't think that will get rid of the language files, which are 100MB in size.
Also, even if we knew where the language files are located, we probably couldn't erase them, unless we are rooted. Anyway, if anyone knows the location, at least I'd like to try.

Hello,
I'm practicably legally blind and reading emails/SMSs and text in games is damn near impossible for me.
I've got the Samsung Ace and I've found an app to switch the answer slider with a big-ass button, I'm using WP_Clock (Which was mentioned here, thanks!) to see the time and date.
I've rooted and tried a few font resizers but none worked and the ones that did only worked on the English font (most of my phone is in Hebrew).
Does anyone have any idea how can I deal with this, other than getting Android eyes
Oh, one more thing:
I've used Total Recall and CallRecorder to record my calls, both record me fine but the other side through the mic, any idea if there are other apps that can record both sides at the same quality?
May all who read this post be touched by his noodly appendage,
Sam.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, My doctors told me it'll be easier to read white text on a black background, so I downloaded a few of those modified apps (Gmail and DropBox). If you know of any others, I'd appreciate a mention.
Noob to android!!
On my Samsung GT 5570, there is an accessibility option under "options", with text to speech features. But looks like the phone has to download several components. Have not tried them, will try them out if you are interested.
Running Gingerbread 2.3.3 (but it was there in froyo 2.2.1 Africa version too).
Saw that option on my run-through of the device (saw isn't exactly the word...)
Not that comfortable using an actual magnifying glass on your cellphone.
Can't stand that thing, that's why I'm posting, looking for something a bit more comfortable like resized fonts and such.
Thanks for trying though, appreciate your assistance!
Using accessibility features in Android
Ok. I have a Samsung GT S5570, "mini".
I have upgraded from 2.2.1 Froyo to 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
To enable accessibility features, more specifically, text to speech, you need to go into two options,
1, Settings > Voice input and output
2. settings > accessibility
I cannot remember which one I opened first, but the phone asked me to enable data downloads / background sync as I entered both menus. ("Always on GPRS" - if you are new to android - especially were using Nokia phones so far).
Once the data is downloaded, go to #1. First entry is "Listen to an example". You can change the language and speed of text to speech engine in other menu options below. At the bottom, I have and entry, which says "engine" and underneath, "PicoTTS". This means required data and text speech engine are installed on the phone.
I guess the available languages are dependent on the ROM you use - you probably need to have the African ROM. (Hope somebody will correct me here).
Here is how to actually enable the phone to read the screen,
Settings > Accessibility > Talkback.
Just enable Talkback. That is it.
Again, I appreciate your help but as I've said, I'm not too comfortable with the TTS and prefer, as long as I have other options, not to use it.
If anyone has any other apps in mind, I'd love to know.
Otherwise, The built in TTS has been checked and discarded, thank you.

Remove words from dictionary

I have a large number of incorrect words in my HD2's dictionary. How do I go about deleting them, without hard resetting my phone?
Thanks,
David
http://samsamuel.co.uk/news.php?id=7
could be useful?
Thanks, but that seems to be a list of words added by HTC to the dictionary. I've added a bunch of words spelt incorrectly, like yoy for you etc. Where are those words stored? Any ideas?
have you tried et9mywords.exe? its been a while since i used winmo but im pretty sure you can use it to remove words as well as add them. (thats why i posted that link, to point you to et9mywords and HTCMDB.txt because theyre the two things i know of related to custom words.)
Unfortunately I don't seem to have that program on my HD2. Could be the ROM I'm running. Could I download it maybe?
it should be in the windows folder, and its possibly hidden, so you would need to 'show all files' (i think)
As for download, not sure if it needs any reg enttries, but heres the exe
I copied the file to the \windows directory, and it did run ok, but it didn't pick up any of my added words. I think you may be right, in that it is missing a registry entry. Any ideas?
nah sorry, not without a running rom to examine. Have a look in that txt file i mentioned, could be they get written to there, its all a bit of a hazy memory.

Chrome browser - custom search engine possible?

At the moment when I do a search in Chrome, because I am based in Qatar, it defaults to the Google Qatar site even though I am an english speaker. Is it possible to edit the search engine configuration anywhere to have it default to google.co.uk or google.com?
It may be possible by modifying the something in the settings files. I was poking around in there the other day looking to see if I could change the user agent and I think I saw something about default county/search but I'm not for sure.
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
Any chance you can tell me where to find the setting file? Is it in the apk or somewhere else?
Bump. Anyone else help me with finding the settings file?
Found it myself!
In case any one is wondering you can, force Chrome to always use a certain Google site (rather than the one for the region you are currently residing in) by editing the /data/data/com.android.chrome/app_chrome/Local State file
You need to change the "last known google URL" and "last prompted google URL" to whichever one you prefer.
Obviously you're going to need root access to be able to do this.

Sure thing. In Chrome, when you do a search from the address bar (on both desktop and mobile) it defaults to using the country specific google site for whichever country you're accessing the net from. In my case I live in Qatar, but as an english speaker I don't want to use google.com.qa (in arabic). You can change this behaviour by editing a file called "Local State" (on both desktop and mobile). The process for doing this on your mobile is:
1 - Root your phone
2 - Using a file explorer browse to the directory "/data/data/com.android.chrome/app_chrome/"
3 - Using a text editor, edit the file "Local State" in this directory by changing the strings "last known google URL" and "last prompted google URL". In my case I edited them ass follows:
from:
{ "last known google url": "http://www.google.com.qa/"
"last prompted google url": "http://www.google.com.qa" }
to:
{ "last known google url": "http://www.google.co.uk/"
"last prompted google url": "http://www.google.co.uk" }
4 - Restart Chrome and now when you do a search from the address bar, it will use the Google site you specified.
Hope that helps.
Noob way
There is a Noob way too.
Translate your preferred language on Google Translate to the language defaulted in Chrome due to your location so you can match it later on. In my case I have translated English into Traditional Chinese which is "英文".
Start Chrome Android
Login with your Google account (should give you the option first time)
Search for "test" or something else. You get your default location language (in my case Traditional Chinese) and search results for "test".
On the page with search results for "test" scroll all the way down to the bottom. You will see your google user name in black.
Just below there are 3 links in blue. Click on the most left, this is "settings".
In settings you will see radio buttons and the foreign language text.
Scroll down until there is no more radio buttons but drop down scroll lists. These are for "language" settings.
The first drop down list is for "Language in Google Products". Scroll down till you find your translation, in my case "英文".
Do the same for the second scroll down list.
Scroll to the complete bottom and click the blue button, this is "Save". You are all set. Google should now show everything in your preferred language, without rooting your phone.
Good luck!

.... if this quick'n'easy method doesn't work
does not change site
The non-rooted settings approach changes the display language, it does not change the site.
Great thread, I also would like to be able to do this, but still haven't found a way that works. As mentioned above, changing "settings" on the search page only changes the language of the results, not the actual search website.
I have root access and also tried editing the local state file as described above. The first time I launched Chrome after the change, it defaulted to google.com as planned, with a popup at the bottom that asked me if I wanted to continue using google.com, or use google.com.hk instead. I chose "google.com", yet when i launched the browser a second time, it defaulted to google.com.hk.
Phone out of battery now but i'll try editing the local state file with "google.com/ncr" when I get home. Any other suggestions? Forcing it to use google.com every time would be very useful!
Chrome version is 18.0.1025123, and Android version is 4.1
I have the same question. How come google locked default search engines, without any possibility to manage them?!
I've tried editing preferences file using root explorer (changing one of the strings there from google.fi to google.com, but it does not actually save it. If I open it again seconds later it still shows google.fi inside of the file. Even though root explorer is given root permissions, as notification states.
Has someone found a way to solve this?
Thanks.
Anyone have any luck with this? I'm tired of googling in Arabic...

Just a follow up, you will need a root-capable system explorer. I looked around for a good free one but didn't find one.
I bought root explorer, mounted as r/w (an option at the top when you first open) and just navigated to that data file and opened it. root explorer has a built in text editor (it doesn't show the cursor which is a bit strange). make the changes (I change from google.nl to google.com because I only just moved to Amsterdam and don't speak dutch yet, so all my searches are in english) then save and exit. it worked well.

[Q] Warning: Possible Chinese Trojan from coolapk.com

Hello,
I wanted to warn you of this website: coolapk.com. Certain apk files contain "additional" parts. In this case it was a part of VLC (Video Lan Client). After downloading an apk file and installing, all seems to be normal and the desired software is running. Under applications there are only the programs you know about. But after close look, you will find a hidden additional application under Settings/Apps/Show All at the bottom behind letter Z if showing within alphabetical order containing only chinese signs. It is already running, you can not deinstall it only force stop and deactivate is possible. The file size is shown as 4KB. After uninstalling the original app this still is keeped in your system. During the installation there was absolutely no sign of additional software attached. This device is not rooted and has OEM ROM. The machine I was using is Motorola (Enterprise Solutions) TC55 PN TC55BH-JC11ES, Android 4.1.2 Build 131013-SI-1800EN-01.45-15443J-4.1.2-user. I downloaded the apk files 24.02.2014 and the chinese software contains a following timestamp in the properties: 20131013.224458. This app has following rights granted: personal information (read all words attached to the dictionary, read contacts) and network communication (full network access). Attached is the screenshot of above mentioned hidden software (only app-info), perhaps a friendly user can help translate and tell what is it, because it's behaviour as far is not really trustworthy for me.
Contact me for additional questions (enterprise class units only).
regards + stay clean

thanks for the advice :good:
I have that software on my TC55 as well. Oandbackup identifies it as com.android.inputmethod.pinyin, in other words the Chinese input from the AOSP, and the Chinese symbols in its name match the ones of the selectable alternative Chinese input under the "Language & input" settings. I have not installed anything from coolapk.com, only from F-Droid and Amazon. Are you sure this software came with VLC and was not there before? It might just be standard with the TC55.

Seriously??

The app name in chinese means "Google's method to input chinese character by spelling". It is bad for sure to install an additional app in secret. But this input method app sounds innocent. In addition, how can you be so sure that the app sneaked in with VLC from coolapk?
On my TF101, I have a number of apks from coolapk. As far as I am concerted, It is good so far with coolapk, I have not found anything wrong yet.

[Q] AOSP Keyboard Dictionary Help

I know this topic has been covered pretty extensively, so I'm sorry to bring it up again, but I'm still having problems. I am trying to use a custom aosp keyboard stripped from a galaxy s 4.3 custom ROM, but I can't get the gesture typing to function on my rooted 4.1.2 Kyocera torque. This keyboard is functioning on my galaxy s (epic). I copied the apk file and dictionary lib file directly from the epic to my new phone. I also replaced the dictionary file with a variety of Google dictionary files and renamed them to all the varieties of "unbundled" and "Google". I bundled the dictionary into the apk and copied it directly, installed as a system and user app. While the word correction and prediction works, gesture typing causes a force crash. If I remember correctly, the gesture typing wouldn't work on my epic until I instead the correct dictionary provider app. However, I uninstalled it go check and the keyboard still works. I also changed the manifest and installed it on my torque, and it made no difference. Does somebody who knows more than I do have any idea how I could get gesture typing to work?
Thanks,
Allan
Bumping this. Someone has got to have a suggestion
