S2 boots once, then stalls - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I successfully followed the advice on this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/to-mod-s2-t3189884) and I have installed CM12.1 's nightly from 29/8.
I boot in once, no problem. But on the second boot the phone bricks. The only way I can get into the system again is to load Philz kernel again and reinstall. But after the second boot the phone bricks again.
Any ideas? It may be the nightly, but even updating to the latest (31/8) didn't fix this.
I can get the CM10.1 stable to work fine, but that drain my battery faster than I can charge it.
I'd like to use 12.1, though: am I just doing something wrong that causes the bricking?
thanks,

When you say I should flash the rom, do you mean I should unzip the stock and push it with Heimdall/Odin?

I mean before flashing any custom rom flash stock rom then flash that rom which u want.
1.download stock firmware flash it with odin
2.then flash philz kernel
3.Reboot to recovery
4.Wipe Cache Partition and Dalvik/ART Cache
5.Now click on Clean to Install New ROM
6.Install the rom
7.Reboot system

Excellent, thank you!
A few tips to anyone looking this up:
First, I used Heimdall - but apparently Odin is quite similar.
I had to unpack the stock rom and then individually flash the factoryfs and zimage files.
I then unpacked the Phils mod and flashed the zimage again.
That was all in download mode
After that I flashed CM12 in recovery mode.

CyanogenMod 7 Flashing Issue

About a month ago I wanted to try out CM7 and see what it's worth.
I went to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176411
I was using a stock GB ROM and rooted with CF-root kernel.
I downloaded the stable build and followed these instructions:
Install via ClockworkMod (do not use ROMManager for initial install):
1.Make sure you're running a rooted device.
2.Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693)
3.Do a Nandroid backup!
4.WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
5.Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery.
6.Do not reboot! We mean it - do nothing except choose zip and continue next step (if you come back to us with permission issues in install, we will know you did not read the directions and will call you an idiot). If it just plain hangs, reboot directly back into ClockworkMod recovery and continue at the next step.
7.Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery, again (due to a bug in the install).
8.Reboot
9.Install the Google Addon through ROMManager which is easiest, but you can
download the gapps.zip and install via ClockworkMod recovery instead.

When My phone booted it got into a bootloop.
I could not boot into recovery, I could only boot into download mode.
I searched the web and on one forum website I saw that someone encountered the same problem and after he encountered the bootloop he booted into download mode and flashed Siyah Kernel via Odin and his phone booted successfully.
I followed what he did and my phone booted into CM7.
After that I went on to other ROMs.
Two days ago I was running CM9 and I wanted to flash to CM7, so I downloaded CM7 nightly build #115 and did the following:
1) My phone was rooted with CWM. (CM9)
2) Wiped data, cache and dalvik.
3) Flashed the ROM twice.
4) Flashed GAPPS.
5) Rebooted.
6) "Samsung Galaxy S II with !" Screen.
7) "Kernel Panic" screen.
8) Took battery out.
*Tried booting into CWM with no success.
9) Booted.
10) Stages 6, 7 & 8.
11) Booted into download mode.
12) Flashed siyah kernel via odin.
13) CM7 working!
So there is my story!
I have also seen other people with the same problem, so it is not just me.
And here are my questions:
1) Why did these problems happen (kernel panic or bootloop)?
2) Why does Siyah Kernel fix these problems?
3) How can I prevent the bootloop/kernel panic from happening in the future (without flashing Siyah)?
Seconding the question as well as noting that it also occurs with Arif-Ali's nightly compiles.
did you wipe cache and dalvik cache after flashing cm7?

I did. I tried "messing" with CWM any which way and even flashed a stock rom in odin (and appropriate CF root). Nothing short of flashing Siyah (and probably any other kernel that supports CM7 except the one in the update zip) lets CM7 boot.

I fixed it.
This is how:
1. Make a CWM Backup.
2. Use Odin to flash I9100XXKI3, including the PIT (re-partition)
3. Flash this kernel (PDA section) and the old Bootloader (Bootloader section) with Odin.
4. Boot into CWM recovery and flash cm7+gapps.
5. Use Advance Restore in CWM to restore your /data partition if you want to.
I'm 90% certain that the problem was ICS's partition layout (PIT file).

what he is trying to say is that you should flash the kernel AFTER you flash your ROM
the ROM you chose is [CM10][Jellybro] i9100 Nightly Kangs, yes?
anyway..
here is what you should do
1. flash your rom
2. flash gapps for cm10
3. flash a kernel [an example of which is Dorimanx Kernel]
if you are still confused on some terms, please refer here
I hope this helps
EDIT:
you should root your phone first
You know, after flashing a new rom booting may take some more time, at least a few minutes. Have you been waiting enough time?
First, check md5sum of ROM [what Saywhatt wrote a few posts back]
a. If you are no longer in recovery modes then you can get a kernel [tar file] Flashing with Odin.
If your phone then starts normally, then flash the ROM you want through CWM.
*** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
b. If you can get into recovery mode, not flash with Odin, but do these same steps;
**** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
PS. If it fails in step a first flash stock ROM with Odin
sorry for my bad english

[Q] Can't solve stock recovery bootloop after installing deodexed I9100XWLSW

Good morning, I am so sorry to disturb the lovely and professional XDA community, but I can't solve this problem.
Sorry in advance for my bad english and for my very low competence in android and flashing roms.
I have an i9100 and I am trying to install deodexed I9100XWLSW rom from your thread
"[ROM][JB.4.1.2][18/10][XW-MS1/LSZ/LSW- Added] Deodexed Stock Samsung Roms" to gain battery life.
No matter if I start in recovery from totally stock XWLSW with stock recovery (boot in recovery then use philz-touch_3.00_i9100-signed.zip and install I9100XWLSW .zip rom package) or from any other Rom (CyanogenMod 10.1.3 or BeanStalk or anything else with their specific recoveries) I finish after install in a boot loop of stock 3e recovery. I have tried also with philz_touch_6.12.8-i9100.tar.md5 flashed with odin but no solution to get aut of boot loop and acces deodexed I9100XWLSW rom. Only way to get phone back is then to flash stock with odin o use again philz-touch_3.00_i9100-signed.zip to restore nandroid backups of other roms.
I have searched everywhere in you forum and in google for a solution and only thing I have found is a user in the "[ROM][JB.4.1.2][18/10][XW-MS1/LSZ/LSW- Added] Deodexed Stock Samsung Roms" thread at page 33 that says he has solved using philz recovery but I have tried and it appears to not work for me. What recovery did he exactly use? I can't post to that thread because I am a new user on xda.
Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong? Hope I have explained my situation,
Many regards
Flash the latest philz kernel in stock recovery. Then reboot into recovery and flash deodexed rom.
Thank you but I still can't get it to work

Thank you so much for the answer, but I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded from xda thread "
[PhilZ-cwm6][i9100/P] Stock Kernel+CWM6+Root+exFAT+NTFS-MS3" at link goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/i9100 the philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.zip and put it on sd. Then with phone still in boot recovery loop I tried from 3e recovery to install philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.zip and it fails saying ""this papackage is for 'galaxys2,i9100,GT-i9100,GT-i9100M,GT-i9100P,Gt-i9100T,SG-02C' devices; this is a ' ' . E: error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (Status 7)".
I then downloaded from web also philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.zip.md5
If I go in download mode and try with odin 3.09 to flash philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.zip.md5. It says "md5 error! Binary is invalid". I tested however md5sum of philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.zip.md5 and it corresponds to the one indicated on website of download.
I then downloaded from the same site philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.tar.md5 and odin says this time "failed" "complete write operation failed".
Ok. So I flashed back with odin original stock I9100XWLSW_I9100ITVLS2_ITV and tried again the sequence. First attempt philz_touch_6.43.4-i9100.zip failed so I stopped trying.
What is wrong? Should I use "signed" versions? I don't understand however what philz to download with stock rom I9100XWLSW_I9100ITVLS2_ITV
UPDATE
Got perhaps the correct Philz for latest ITA stock rom I9100XWLSW_I9100ITVLS2_ITV : PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSW-XEU-5.08.5-signed.zip
Installed it through stock recovery. Installed from new recovery after reboot and complete wipe the deoxeded rom I9100XWLSW. Again boot recovery 3e loop. Installed again PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSW-XEU-5.08.5-signed.zip via stock.
Now getting philz recovery loop. I am a bit low in solutions.....

Thats strange, did you flash anything else with the ROM ? Any mods etc ?
Are you sure your data, cache & system partitions are in ext4 filesystems ?
earlier i flashed blu spark kernel and converted data and cache to f2fs.
but now i installed stock recovery and flashed only stock rom nothing else.

Thats the problem LoL, convert /data & /cache to ext4 again, then do a full wipe again, then flash the ROM, then when it completes, wipe cache & dalvik & reboot.

Can you post screenshots of your data, system & cache being ext4 ?
Also, when you're flashing this ROM, dont flash anything else, Nothing at all, only this 800MB zip package.
Edit - Use TWRP for all this.
