i recently just re used this with success http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2798321
Been using a year or so now too- Had to re-install factory rom again because i flashed a philz recovery i found that prevented my sd card being used to restore back-up of factory rom after bricking another rom bk up i was on,the main thing is the cwm is working correctly for bk-ups and the battery is better than stock
or you could just use tims auto root with stock kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2797146
and then flash cwm from first link up

[Q] Flashed SpeedMod, no root?

Hi Guys, first time flashing and just successfully done so with SpeedMod kernel. Checked the kernel version and yup it's there.
One problem though, I tried installing Titanium Back up but it says my phone is not properly rooted. So I downloaded Root Checker and it says that my phone is indeed not properly rooted. What happened? I thought SpeedMod automatically installs root?
Hope (and Im sure) you guys can help me. Thanks in advance!

Installing speedmod kernal won't give you root access.. 1st you have to root your phone.. Search for it.. I will tell one method.. Flash an insecure kernel.. Then use 's2 root ' to root your phone.. There are many other methods..
Thank me if I helped

I see. I thought it was gonna give me root straight away. I posted a topic here about that and the one who replied told me to just flash SpeedMod straight away.
So what I have to do is flash an insecure kernel, then flash SpeedMod again?

perhaps you need to update superuser or download SU Update Fixer
What are you guys on about, speedomod and most if not all custom kernels do indeed root you phone. Try to flash it again and plz use odin, not recovery as some assume.

Speedmod automatically roots your phone....
I expect superuser wasn't updated to the latest version,
Did titanium give an option such as 'yes, do it'?
If so, it's because your superuser app was not updated to latest version, check it on the android market.
I've flashed SpeedMod hundreds of times, it's never once failed to root.

I flashed it using Odin. Titanium didn;t give me that option either. I guess Ill just check the market for the latest Superuser then. Ill get back to you guys once I get back home, still here at work.
Thanks for the replies!
Ok so I downloaded the latest SU. Tried updating from within the app. So i got to the black screen with the green fonts, it says i run the legacy version. Then when it gets to the gaining root access.... Part, it always says fail. I tried dling the Su updater but all its says is ok.
Any help anyone?

My suggestion as you are going around in baffling circles .
....................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Start over with your custom rom root whatever .
Thanks for the tip Jjegan but I can't afford to lose all my apps in the process as I still can't use Titanium Backup. I've already updated to Superuser v3.0.7 but Root Checker still says I do not have proper root access.
I was browsing the OneClick Root thread and I saw someone there with the same problem (Superuser installed but can't use apps that require root access) but was not answered (I went from page 1-39). Spekaing of OneClick Root, would it work? It says it installs Superuser, su and Busybox.
I hope someone can help me with this.
**Also, would reflashing the stock kernel then flashing SpeedMod again solve the problem?
Might sound obvious but anyway: go into su, scroll over to the log and check that su hasn't been inadvertently blocked.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
No use. My log is empty plus I set the automatic response to Allow. Still nothing.
Should I just reflash the original kernel, clear all data then reflash Speedmod?
I'm running stock firmware btw.
I ran S2 Root and it says my device already has PERM ROOT. I'm getting confused...
Try fixing permissions, if that doesn't work try flashing a CF kernel or the original one. If all else fails you might have to bite the bullet and follow the advice above and start with a clean slate.

Ok I got it. XXKL1 can't get root access (I bought the phone from someone so I didn't know this before). I went ahead and flashed CheckRom v6 and everything worked! Superuser, root, etc.. everything! Good thing I kept on reading. Anyways, thanks for the replies guys!
Speedmod will make you lose root. Root again and flash a kernel like redpill or siyah.

well i did root succesfully my S3, but now i get the famous notice:
"Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
i even did use Triangle away 2.10 but now unfortunately it seems it isn't able to reset counter in JB 4.1.1 as it did succeed before with ICS 4.0.4
What the heck to do now?
Same here regarding the software updates after rooting JB with CF 6.4. Any ideas on this issue?

after reading in several threads in my newbie mind it did occur the following"
- maybe only apparently cf root 6.4 does the job- cause these lil issues weren't coming up in ICS 4.0.4
-maybe this glicth should be looked into and then maybe we get a new ".tar" like cf root 6.5 or so....
PS please don't blame me for the above

The root is there...my Titanium Backup is reporting that it can acquire root. The only problem is with the broken OTA functionality.
Did you stop and think you have the latest OTA, what's the point of downloading and flashing the same update every time you check...
Beside, you use ODIN to flash the latest update, whats the point of using the OTA function if every time it flashes an OTA you need to go and reflash cf-root...
Personally I use mobile ODIN after flashing and rooting so I don't need to keep re-installing root...

Thanks for the reply. This is more a workarround than a fix to the initial problem. I would like to use OTA even with a rooted phone.
Root fix?
Any further ideas on how to root the S3 on the ROM: I9300XXDLIH?
I have tried CF Root 6.4 using Odin 3.04 and 1.85, still no problems.
I'm not sure about the unchecking auto reboot when flashing the CF-Root 6.4 and then booting into recovery to prompt an install? I've booted into recovery but not sure about how to prompt it into an install?
I like the new 4.1.1 ROM, but disappointed my apps aren't running correctly because the phone's not rooted?
You have tobhave auto reboot so it flashes the files for root

well that's somehow half true in our case
..and why i say that
when i had ICS 4.0.4 following the advices from xda i did succeed properly the following:
1. Achieve fast & safe root
2. Preserving the capacity of my device to get OTA updates
(3. TriangleAway did work as a charm- did reset flawless the counter)
as a summary of the above said all was superb
now - with stock 4.1.1 with root performed ( in the same manner) i get a superb msg: "device modified"
and TriangleAway doesn't reset at all the counter anymore
i must say i did follow the others advice and did - using ODIN Mobile- revert to stock ICS 4.0.4 and then flashed Stock rom vodafone 4.1.1 to try to avoid loosing root and to be able to get some OTA updates
it seems that at this point i did fail somewhere when i used TitaniumBackup in restoring some apps:
1. this one asked me if to revert to the old Mac Address- and i accepted in order that google apps keep recognizing the device - did this wreck up the clean status of my just flashed phone?
2. or did i wreck up the phone's status by restoring from a backup ( i think i did a restore from a backup that included system backup too) - in this case before flashing- i should do backup only for the apps- without any system backup?

PS: Sorry for my English is not very good
Look at the PhilZ-CWM6 custom kernel. It can be flashed in stock recovery and includes SuperSU, root, ClockworkMod Recovery and Busybox.
It is pure stock based, and doesn't have MMC brickbug.
Thanks for responding! But there would be some way that only makes you root, without installing a modified kernel and without CWM? is that I want nothing more root access

You're wrong pal, using the first method will only root your phone, no cwm nor custom kernel. its a single file u flash through stock recovery that gives you root and busybox, nothing else.

There is ALWAYS a risk when doing anything to your device. The level of risk is down to what you are doing and what state the battery is in etc.
As long at the rooted kernel you are flashing is compatible with the current firmware then all SHOULD be fine.

Hi,
So, this is what happened
I have a galaxy SII gt-i9100, About 5 months ago I rooted it and installed the galaxy nexus update to android 4.0.4. and everything was ok except it wasn't showing me the option to transfer via blue tooth (but that didn't bother me much). These were the things I used
1. GT-I9100_ClockworkMod-Recovery_4.0.1.4
2. Odin3 v1.83
3. GT-I9100_XWKI8_insecure
4. GT-I9100_XWKI8_original
Now, yesterday I a friend had galaxy S II i9100P and he updated the firmware using kies and it had working blue tooth. I thought ok let's change it to that and my blue tooth might work also. I was at work and I (in a hurry) tried rooting it with only Odin. No backup, No Clockwork  nothing. ( and "Now it's stuck at the startup screen. I can go to download mode and recovery mode but it has samusg recovery not clockwork. I don't know what to do and in need of help. I'd really appreciate a quick response. (hoping to get atleast the mass data back )
These were the only 2 things used.
1. Odin3 v1.83

ok, the galaxy nexus update? you mean Jelly Bean or Supernexus / chamaleon?
I think that you've installed a stock ROM over a custom ROM and that's why you are stucked at the logo.
read a little bit about flashing because you are up for it.
Learn about SD card data when flashing and follow a tutorial to flash stock ICS 4.0.3 via odin thru Download mode.
Also make sure to flash a safe kernel so you wont get the brick bug (see warning post sticked in the general section).
I don't know what to put here...any ideas?

[Q] cmw not working and superuser not working after rom manager backup failed

Hi,
I have recently installed android rev hd 40 on my s3 I was going to back it up using Rom Manager before trying another rom. It failed to back up data and then said something about superuser access. I tried to reboot. It got to lock screen twice and crashed back to reboot. then stuck on samsung boot screen.
I used odin to re-root(i think) and phone started ok. but when i tried to update binary? as requested it failed. I tried to install chainfire from market and it said there was not super user installed and that this was a problem! that I should come to forums for advice.
I then tried to restore from rom manager.......rom manager not working due to no super user access.....I think. It cannot see any restore files.
Not sure how I use odin for anything other than cf auto root.
can anyone help me reinstall cmw and get super user access again???
thanks
First of all- see if you got app called 'SuperUser' installed in your app drawer (which is different from chainfire's SuperSU app you tried to install).
If the answer is yes- see if in-app root access permissions are disabled. If the answer is no and you have access to CWM, i suggest flashing SuperSU with CWM from this link (It should replace your current root manager): http://download.chainfire.eu/381/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.91.zip
If the flashing failed because it says that you dont have rooted device- try to reflash CF-Auto root with odin: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
If you dont have acess to CWM or want to install a newer recovery- I recommend Philz touch: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/i9300
(It can be installed with Odin (.tar file) in the same way as CF-AutoRoot, or in CWM mode with the .zip file)
Good luck
Thanks for the help.
I have flashed the philz recovery as suggested. Worked a treat. The only issue is that I have lost all my previous back ups.
Is it still possible for me to to unroot and clear rom counter if I needed to, if there was a warranty claim fault on the phone without access to the original back up?
Thanks again.

Root for NG3?

I did but idk if I did something wrong, I soft bricked and had to odin back stock with the firmware off of samfirmware site
Kernel build date on NG3 is July 19 so the exploit has been patched. Can't root with towelroot since it needs a kernel build before Jun 3.
What I did was odin flash philz recovery, then went into the custom recovery and went to reboot, it asked me to root and so I did then was able to download su from play store and was rooted

This phone will never not be rootable. It has an unlocked bootloader, so you can just flash the recovery of your choice, root it from there, then reboot and you're done.

And why is that? Unless Samsung has restricted the bootloader permissions or set a new qfuse to block a downgrade of this firmware version, then the OP could use Odin to install a pre June 3rd build of 4.4.2 firmware, which Towel root can work with.
The previous update was revertible by installing an earlier firmware (confirmed). And NG3 is probably revertible as well (unconfirmed) i.e. it will be revertible unless Samsung took explicit steps to block a downgrade.
Provided that the OP doesn't care about the Knox flag, then the suggestion to install a custom recovery and root from there is valid too.
.

Thanks.
Yeah, I did it via download mode.
So, what I did, I flash it via Odin in Download mode, and when it auto-reboots, I instantly hold Power + Pwr Up + Home in order to get to Recovery.
If I let it boot up first, it seems that recovery is overwritten by the stock recovery.
All good now =)

Try unchecking auto-reboot.

Hi guys, no luck here, have the G900T, with the NG3, tried all with Odin, phillz recovery, bootloader+modem, downgrade to NF6 (failed too) or even the one before, nada, zero, just fail and fail resulting soft brick and only through Kies recovery I'm able to have the phone working again!

you need to revert to ne6 firmware for towel root to work. once rooted you can upgrade with mobile odin pro this will allow you to retain root and not trip knox

Hi! Thank you for your answer! I already trip Knox long ago, it's not an issue for me, I'm been trying to downgrade to ne6 and it's the same, fail on Odin!

if you just want root you can try cf autoroot http://download.chainfire.eu/407/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltetmo-kltetmo-smg900t.zip

But as I commented on my first post here, nada, nothing, I have tried the Phillz, the CF-auto-root, downgrade, with the original cable and others, with and without the sim card and/or sd card inserted (all of this with usb debug on in the developers settings) i dont really understand why, everything I try goes to fail and soft brick, only recuperable with Kies and full wipe...
Mine is the MS-G900T with the latest firmware :S is very weird, isn't the first time I root a phone (Galaxy Vibrant and Blaze, Nexus and Nexus 7) and I have flsh a lot of times and I know the for this procedure you have to follow each letter step by step!
I'm start thinking that probably is a locked bootloader... dunno...
this was easy and thank you. i downgraded with the full stock file, no data loss. grabbed mobile pro and im now at ng3 rooted. tho my e-mail will not work. might have to factory reset the device.
