Rooting means you have root access to your phone. You can modify/change by attaining root access.
It does not upgrade your firmware.
You can flash the firmware / rom on your phone only after getting root access.
Search on xda for any custom firmwares for your device.

I recently acquired the same tablet and I would really appreciate if you could share how you did the root at least.
I've tried with frameroot and towelroot but it didn't work. Previously I used different methods on my phones, but after one bricked device I'm a little afraid to hook it up to the PC without being sure if it's gonna work ok.
Android version: 4.4.2
Kernel version: 3.4.67

I couldn't wait (as usual) and at the end I found Kingo Android Root Method quite useful. It took a lot of rebooting but in 10-15mins my tablet was rooted.
Off topic: Reason to root this time - KitKat SD Card lack of permissions. Root > SDFix (from PlayStore) > Fixed!
