I'm trying to update my Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the latest firmware (PDA:KME) that includes TouchWiz (I got mine recently right after they halted distributing that firmware and it just became available again). I've tried OTA and through Kies, neither of which is working.
My device was rooted. I'm running the stock ROM with a custom kernel, and ClockworkMod Recovery.
When I try to update via Kies, the firmware is downloaded at which point the device seems to reboot into ODIN3 Download Mode. There is a green Android guy and it says "Downloading . . . Do not turn off target". In the Odin log it says "Connected! Press the Start of Odin3. I press Start in ODIN but nothing happens nor do I expect anything to happen since there is nothing selected in ODIN to upload to the phone. So I have to hold the power button and reboot without any changes.
If I try to update via OTA, I can initiate a Download. I then can click Install. After a few seconds I click OK to reboot the device. The update goes to 13% and then stops. The device reboots and I'm back with the old firmware still. I eventually get a message that the firmware failed to be updated.
What should I do?
Part of Kies update process is to boot the tablet into download mode and Kies, not ODIN, will push down the firmware bits automatically. You are not supposed to launch ODIN at all. Keep the Kies running and it will finish all the process for you.
You only use ODIN if you want to flash a firmware you already downloaded manually.
Kies and OTA updates will probably be similar. So, if your phone is rooted and can't update OTA, you will likely get the same issue via Kies.
Hmmm. Not sure what to do then. I'm not launching ODIN myself on the Tab. When the Tab reboots after downloading the update via Kies, it goes into ODIN download mode by itself. Using OTA, it reboots correctly but just doesn't finish the update process.
I tried reflashing the stock recovery but that didn't change the failed result.

That is correct. And Kies should supposedly begin sending down the firmware after it sees the tab is in download mode, not before. Here is what Kies does in order:
1. Detect your tab's current model # and firmware version and check to see if there is an update.
2. Download the update from internet to the PC.
3. Reboot the tab into download mode.
4. Detect your tab is in download mode and start to send the firmware down to the tab.
5. Upon receive all the firmware bits, tab will start the update process by itself.
It is called download mode, not ODIN download mode. ODIN is an unofficial tool to flash firmware (there are other tools that can do exactly what ODIN does), not related to download mode although it requires download mode to push down the firmware.
There are instructions for finishing up the OTA update when you have CWM installed. You need to boot the tab into recovery mode and clear all the cache data.
Thanks for trying to help me through this. Still not getting it to work.
I didn't see any specific instructions for updating via OTA with CWM installed. What i did was boot into recovery, wipe the cache, wipe the dalvik cache, reboot and download the update again. Clicked install, OK to reboot. It went through 13% of the install process and then stopped, rebooted, and indicated the update failed.
Perhaps I should just run a custom ROM instead. That's what I've done on my original Droid but I haven't had a chance to look through the ROMs for the Tab to find a suitable one.
Quite frustrating.
Well, if you ever installed custom bits (kernels and CWM), you should not expect OTA update be successful at all. You have to stick with custom ROMs.
Personally, I see no value to install CWM on the table if you're not flashing custom ROMs since it has been proven not working well with OTA updates.
I'm running a custom kernel, just not a ROM yet. But I think I'll just try to find one I like and do that instead.
Ok so i had ICS passion installed then one day the rom gave me an error telling me encryption unsuccessful. So i followed the instructions to fix it, by putting the partition on the micro sd card (8gb). I then decided to flash back to stock gingerbread with odin. I thought that if I put a galaxy s international rom on the US vibrant it would work, but i was wrong so dont try that. I was stuck on a bootloop and was able to get to download mode. Then i used Odin to flash JFD for vibrant it said i passed but when i booted it did the same. Now im on KB5 and it gave me android system recovery <3e> but i have an error dev/block/mmcblk0p1.
I cannot go to menu, i can access download mode and android system recovery, i also tried to install update zip but it gave me the signature fail.
Please help me back to stock firmware or any stable version. Thank You
Please help me save my phone, if still possible. These are the things I had done with my phone before the scenario I am having right now:
1. I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S II GT - i9100 running ICS 4.0.3 DXLP9 using update.zip in CWM.
2. I then ported resurrection remix v3.0.9 and went along just fine.
3. My SIM card's data network mode doesn't work so I restored the stock ROM using the backup file of what I was previously using.
4. Steps 2 and 3 went on for about 8 times then I finally stopped on the stock ROM.
5. I decided to update it again but this time using official 4.0.4 xxwlpx firmware.
6. I downloaded mobile ODIN and then flashed the update there.
7. The flash was successful but while using the phone I get "com.android..... is not responding".
8. I decided to do a factory wipe, and then when the phone is rebooting, it got stuck on the samsung galaxy logo.
9. I proceeded to go to recovery mode and install RR again but still got stock on boot.
10. I gave up and handed the phone over to my friend and tried flashing through ODIN, still he can't perform data wipe.
11. I got the phone back and then looked for the problem. I found a method of using a modified PIT file and then proceeded to do just that.
12. Now I am back using my phone with 4.0.4 xxwlpx. But then I found out it has a brick bug so I decided to reinstall RR again using CWM.
13. Now I cannot use the phone again. Everytime I put my phone into recovery it says "failed to mount..system"
14. I then proceeded to flash PIT files for about 5 times but to no avail. I get stuck at flashing in "factoryfs.img".
15. Now I flashed one last PIT file hoping it would work. Now I am stuck at "Firmware update encountered an issue.....Kies & try again".
16. I brought the phone to a local jtag service but they weren't able to do anything with it. I only have a budget of 1500php (37USD). They said that changing the motherboard would cost 4500-5000php(107-120USD). They said it was the emmc. Changing the motherboard at the local samsung center costs 10500PHP(250SUSD). I'm still a student and don't have that much money.
17. I then flashed i9100_u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4-patched-standard PIT file. flashing went successfully.
18. I tried to flash stock 4.0.3 dxlp9 but got stuck at boot.bin.
And that led me to what I am dealing with now. "Firmware update encountered". If anyone here in XDA knows how to fix this, please help me. What did I do wrong? Do I still have a chance to get this fixed?
I am so sorry for being a noob.:crying:
I have a Galaxy Note that was on Telus in Canada. I attempted to follow these instructions to install Cyanogenmod: wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_quincyatt. Had alot of problems working with Windoz 8 - but eventually **seemed** to get the CWM installed. However, when I did the reboot to recovery mode, I got 'Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.' I can't seem to do anything to get past this. I'm pretty much a beginner with modding my phone, so before I do anything else stupid, I'm asking for help. What can I do to either a) get back to my original install or b) try again with Cyanogenmod?
Thanks!

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago. Picked the wrong package to flash and got the same error message. I had to boot into download mode and then load the stock ROM via Odin, then root.
That fixed it for me and now I'm flashing custom ROMS again (and carefully reading the name of the ROM I'm flashing before hand lol).
First, to install CWR on a Canadian phone you have to pull the battery from the phone and disconnect the usb cable the instant Odin says flash was successful, otherwise the phone reboots and overwrites the custom recovery with the stock recovery. Then put the battery back in the phone and boot into recovery. Then format, wipe, and flash the rom.
Hi guys, as topic says i cant boot after flashing firmware with odin. everything installs perfectly in odin it says pass! ad below in details it says success1/fail0. But when odin reboots system its stuck at booting recovery.... And never go further into system. I have downloaded 5.0 from sammobile and http://www.galaxys5update.com/galaxy-s5-stock-firmware/ but samething. I flashed it 2 times, 1 time from each source. Also after flashing i cannot enter into recovery. So i flashed the good old kitkat for now... can anyone explain why i cant boot after flashing rom with odin, does it has something to do with bootloaer. also i did not update through software update thingy/kies caue it says you cant downgrade but i see many article in internet also on xda that you can with odin. whats the truth.
