Hey everyone, I’m posting this to both XDA and the CyanogenMod forums for simplicity’s sake
I recently inherited a Note 3 from my sister who just got the Note 5, so of course I promptly rooted it and flashed CM 12.1
However, I’ve had some problems that I can’t seem to find a fix for, and I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
1) GPS
GPS cannot get a lock. Sometimes it will kinda work sporadically for a second or two, but it’s definitely not the fast, solid Lock that it’s supposed to be. Google Maps Navigation gets close, and I can see my route, but it doesn’t give me the solid Lock that it’s supposed to. I’ve downloaded GPS Status and re-downloaded AGPS data and done the available calibrations but that doesn’t really seem to do anything.
I found this thread regarding the GPS issue, but there seems to be a debate as to whether or not the fix suggested actually works. Haven’t tried it for myself yet but I plan to soon as I can get backups made:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/105538-have-they-fixed-gps-on-note-3-hltespr-sprint-yet/
I also found this possible solution over in the Galaxy S4 forums, but I couldn’t figure out how to edit my gps.conf file. I tried with both Astro File Manager and Terminal Emulator but I couldn’t edit the file due to permissions I’m pretty sure. I have some basic Linux knowledge but I’m not sure what the problem is. The usual “just sudo it” method doesn’t seem to work:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/108806-gps-not-fixing-with-latest-cm121/
2) Startup/Shutdown Sound
Apparently the Note 3 has a Startup and Shutdown sound. I’ve previously had an S3 and S4 and neither of them had it.
So now CyanogenMod plays my Default Notification Sounds whenever it starts up or shuts down. Which is fine, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to change the sound aside from changing my Default Notification Sound. I like to keep all my sounds different so I don’t like to have the same sound for two different functions. Does anyone know if there’s any possible way to change the Startup and Shutdown sounds?
Thanks in advance for any help!

So I finally took the plunge and rooted; I installed CM7, as well as an updated kernel (I think it was from "imoysen", or something like that?), though I'm still kinda shaky on these concepts. So I have a few questions.
First of all, on CM7, it appears that I don't have a voicemail app anymore. Previously, after installing CM7, I was missing the Android Market app (as well as other Google apps), and someone instructed me to flash GAPPS, which got these back for me. Am I going to have to do the same for voicemail?
Secondly, back when I was on stock, I like using Fancy Widgets and/ or Beautiful Widgets to get Sense-lock clocks (but with more themes). I'm noticing now, on CM7, though, that none of them are able to pick up my location for weather. Why is that, and how do I fix it?
Lastly, and this is one that I'm VERY curious about, now that I'm rooted, is there any way to make headphones with controls originally made for iPhones (the ones with volume +/-, and a middle button) work with the Thunderbolt? I know they don't work on stock because it's an Apple proprietary thing, or whatever, but is there a way to get them working on a rooted device?
Thanks much to anyone that can answer any of my questions.

No idea on Voicemail; I've only used Sense-based ROMs. I would assume that there are multiple voicemail apps available (but you could just use Google Voice, and avoid ever having to listen to voicemails! text message transcriptions of voicemails are much better)
Weather Location: In Settings -> Location, make sure you have location services enabled. Also make sure you have syncing enabled in Accounts&Sync.
As for the headphones, check out https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kober.headsetbutton&hl=en
You'll notice, however, in the description:
Headset Button Controller cannot support the separate volume control buttons on the iPhone headset - this is a limitation of the Android framework.

So you'll only get 1 button worth of control.
Hm. Well, in CM7, I don't see any kind of setting for "Location", nor is there anything for it in Accounts & Sync. I know when I was first trying to get it to work, I stumbled upon some settings for location, but even when I had everything enabled, it still wasn't picking up my location.
Bummer about the headphones... I have a really nice set that I like a lot, I just wish the three buttons worked with Android.
Flash this in your recovery. This is the latest network location apk. Should fix you location.

Cool, thanks, that did the trick!
I originally posted this in the E4GT forum, but didn't get any takers. As this is something that is extremely perplexing to me, I decided to take the impatient route and post this here as well.
Searching failed pretty badly, both here and a general Google search.
However, I am perfectly willing to admit the possibility that I wasn't searching for the correct terms.
I can pretty consistently flash new boot animations with CWM. The context of the zip was pretty easy to get a handle on. That being said, I've run into a problem with certain specific sounds being used as the boot sound.
I've renamed them with the appropriate PowerOn.wav name, but some work and some do not.
The ones that don't work show an odd behavior. The boot animation plays fine, the sound that I've selected plays normally, but then the looping part of the boot animation just loops indefinitely.
The phone itself has actually finished booting, since I can unlock it, and can navigate blindly, hearing the appropriate noises. I can power it off by guessing where the buttons are onscreen, but I can't see anything aside from the boot animation.
Changing the power on sound file fixes the problem, but doesn't give me the sound I would like to have for my boot.
The length of the file doesn't seem to matter, some shorter ones work, some longer ones work.
I'm wondering if possibly the encoding of the files may matter, but I can't seem to figure out a difference between what works and what doesn't...
I can post some examples if anyone would deem it helpful.
Thoughts?
I really don't have uber high demands for my phones, I just expect them to work and fill my what I believe to be simple needs. I'm hoping that I can list some of my issues and possibly get some positive feedback to help weed through issues, not only for me but for other users. I know this phone has a lot of passionate followers, I can definitely say, I'm not one of them.
I don't mind rooting at all, but cannot lose 4g capabilities. I know I've seen some locked OSs, any suggestions would be appreciated. I also bought this phone based on my ideals behind Tegra and the SIM slot as I'll be doing some world travel within the next few months. Now to some issues I've had...
Default Music player - efing sucks. If there isn't a good 30secs of lag loading media from the external SD card, the damn thing crashes after 3-4 songs. I fully understand that rooting will get through this issue with a different (hopefully android default) media player. But I'm struggling to find why this is an issue outside of poor development. Have about 8GB worth of music on either a 16gb or 32gb SD card. Wipe Dvcache and NO PROBLEMS with same memory card.
Camera - Can't shut off shutter sound? What the hell were Motorola software techs thinking? Yes the camera is very good, but what the fizzle? I ironically heavily considered this phone over the GS2 because of the dedicated camera button. Only to be frustrated thanks to the inability to take ninja photos.
Multi-Touch - I had issues with multi point touching. Multidev gave some direction here, which if I root my phone later today, I'll definitely go in this direction.
BT Media Stream - Specifically with the Sync in Ford vehicles. I've used it in both a 2011 Focus (sync 3.0) and my 2011 Mustang (sync 2.0) and repeated the same issue detailed in this thread. Completely drives me up the wall, as I have not had this issue with any of the roms I ran previously on my Evo4g. Everything else works well with Sync, including making and receiving calls and text/email notification.
I'm sure there's been a few more issues that I've had slip my mind. But, I guess I'm really just hoping that I can use the benefits of this phone without continuing to 'deal with' the shortcomings of owning a handset that isn't going to sell 500k units and get the kind of manufacturer and homebrew software support of a phone that has sold 500k units.
Thanks
i use google music app, not the moto one and i love it.. ive had NO issues with it what so ever.. and it is THE default android player
camera is annoying but you are required to be rooted to remove it.. dunno if anyone has or not tho. any third party app should still work with the button etc etc
as for bluetooth.. no idea again may be solved by removing the current music app and putting googlemusic on there (use titanium backup to remove the moto music player )
Thanks for the response Shabby.
So either way, I'd be better off rooting and removing the music player and camera apps?
I guess the only other thing I'm looking for in a rom is just general speed. The phone flys when it comes to opening programs and program performance, but the general speed of menu access and transitioning from one base mode to the next leaves a lot to be desired. Just getting in and out of text messages takes just too damn long.
First of all, the Photon is a great phone, when it works properly.
I have had wayyy more issues than you with it, and trust me, sometime I just completely hate the F&@^(*$ Mother [email protected]%[email protected] This phone can be a dumb @$$ son of a B!^@%. When it works it is awesome.
I have been through about 5 replacement Photon's and need to replace it again after the holidays, (Motorola has finally fixed the problem with it officially, YAY!) Now, you shouldn't be complaining compared to what I have been through.
But, I understand where you are comming from.
I have not had a stable music player, other than Rhapsody, that didn't crash or force close on me, including, Music, Google Music, Honeycomb Music, & Player Pro.
I personally hate the Rhapsody interface and I am forced to deal with it.
Camera Shutter Issue,
Root Required - Download Root Explorer via Market or find other means of getting it. PM me if you want to know how you can get it in other ways.
Go to
System/media/audio/ui in Root Explorer.
First copy and save to it to sd first incase you want it back cause delete is permanent.
Set system to rw then delete
Delete camera sound ogg.
Then you are all set. Or don't root and use the following application: https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/443424#443424
(Sorry, the Motorola forums are currently down, they hope to get back up by the end of this week.) But, check later on this or next week. (NOW YOU CAN TAKE NINJA PHOTOS) But remember, there is not current way to disable the auto focus double beep, if someone finds a way, please comment below, and I may edit this post.
Bluetooth car issue, you should experiment with different Music Player applications.
Hope I've helped! Be sure to click the "Thanks" button if I did, it lets other users know that I am helpful.
MultiTouch - follow the directions that you posted

There's another way to disable the camera sound on the phone here: Enable sound settings in stock camera app - root required
Also, what's the problem with the phone that they're finally fixing?
I wasn't aware of the Multi touch problem, and I have ran into my touch screen locking problem yesterday while playing Mario Kart 64 yesterday.
I backed up my touch screen folder, and replaced it with the 8 multi touch files.
That is a deal breaker, but I'm glad to have the solution.
Edit: I tried Mario Kart again, but the touch screen continues to lock up after holding down "A" for a bit (to accelerate). Did Motorola lock how long you can press down on the screen?
Yes, I tried the multi touch app and they register all 8 touches.

Hello, for the past few weeks i've been using cm 7.1 on my i9100 and I'd be glad to say that the rom is perfect, if some issues didn't come up. Firstly, since the first day of use, i've realized that the sound volume (both from speaker and headset) is fairly low compared to samsung's rom (to be frank going above 50-60% in volume options doesn't make a difference). Is there any solution to this? CM 9 apart from the "known issues" got that bug too?
The second problem came up a few days ago and it's related to the android market app. Everytime you scroll through an app's details, the phone freezes and the only way to restore it, is to turn it off and on again. Currently, i'm using app brain which doesn't seem to have that problem, but i really love google's app. So, any solution to that?
Try the app in my sig to give the headset/headphone volume a boost, works really well & only distorts the volume at very high levels (>75% which you shouldn't need). There are apps on the Market which can boost the speaker volume, not sure how well these work as I haven't tried any.
So far as the Market is concerned, I use a CM based rom and have had that problem as well. The only fix I've come across/read about is to restore a much earlier version of the market (hopefully someone else reads this thread and has a fix that can help both of us ). I haven't done this myself as I've trained myself to do all my scrolling thru app details on my PC first & simply do the install/update on my phone without scrolling thru the details , but I'm sure a search on here should dig up something/the apk you need.
Ask in the right place may get an answer quicker .

I have almost everything how I want it now... However there are some things that are still niggling at me about how the Nook operates. I fell in love with CM7 and the ability to completely disable the lock screen.
I can't find a way to do this on the rooted stock rom that I am using. There are a few apps, but while they turn it off for a little while they don't keep it turned off and it randomly enables itself again.
Does anyone know a solution - note I am alright with modifying APK files somewhat if that is required, I don't know where to start though and certainly would rather have a software solution that I didn't need to modify APK files for.
