Radio Bands, What can/can't be changed? (LG G3 F400L) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA! Longtime lurker, first post.
I've got a Korean LG G3 and T-mobile service, which means LTE and 2G bands are off limits in the United States. I'm running CM12 as of a few days ago - when installing the new OS, I flashed a new radio baseband as well. It included an HSDPA band that I'd not seen before.
As a n00b, I'm confused as to where hardware becomes firmware becomes software. I've read many a post on the forum, but confusion remains. From threads by Blacksoulxxx and olokos, it sounds as though with some patience and method, modifying my phone's firmware to include additional bands is possible but putsy.
In the case of the G3, there is a variant for each major US carrier. The T-mobile variant is the D851.
The question: can I flash the baseband radio/modem of a D851 onto my F400L and gain access to T-mobile's entire frequency set?

Absolutely can not flash the modem from the Tmo G3. Best case scenario, it fails. Worst case scenario, you mess up the baseband and lose your IMEI causing no service whatsoever. There have been some phones that you can open additional bands on, but a quick search didn't bring up anything specific to your model.

[Q] "unlocking" base bands on a LG optimus 3D phone or physically impossible?
Hi guys.
I've search for this all night and cannot find a proper answer:
I have a rogers LG-P925G (LG Optimus 3D) that I have unlocked but that doesn't support the 1700/2100 AWS base bands. Rogers won't support those bands but I am wondering if this is a criple at the baseband firmware level, or of the actual radio chips won't support it.
I've seen UI screenshots of optimus 3D in other forums that had the frequencies listed on the box and showed support for UMTS networks, but it was on a unbranded optimus 3D.
I can't find an app that will list the radio chipsets nor a straight answer on this. Anyone KNOWLEDGABLE can share some answers on this?
If the route is to use another firmware to gain access to the frequencies, I'm more than ready to hack it.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Anyone? Just bought a sim locked rogers phone, need to use on the fido network. Cannot seem to unlock at all, tried flashing roms etc.
I also bought a sim locked rogers phone and am now using it on Fido. Many stores and websites offer unlocking services. stores ask for about $20 whereas websites do it for approx. $7. google some sites.
boboche, try flashing v21a or v21b on your phone. I read that for some people it actually activates the disabled 1700 band (not present in thrill (P925). It didnt work for me so I am still searching on how to enable the 1700 band but I think its worth a shot plus your phone get updated to 2.3.5(gingerbread). you can flash your phone using Adixtra's thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287236

[Q] How to unlock Verizon LG G3 to use in international carrier

Hi, this question may have been asked but how do I unlock a Verizon LG G3 to be able to use it on any carrier internationally?
I have heard of sites such as unlocklocks.com or similar, but can those sites be trusted, and if so is there a preferred site to use?
Once the phone is unlocked, do I just purchase a SIM card at the country I am visiting an purchase a temporary voice/data plan?
In my case I would like to know if the Verizon LG G3 smartphone would work with a voice and data plan in Colombia - how could I find out if this will work?
A quick search I did for network technology landed me to these pages:
gsmarena.com/network-bands.php3?sCountry=COLOMBIA
phonearena.com/phones/LG-G3_id8347
Thanks in advance!
Its not locked.
Just buy a sim and install it with APN settings and so forth. It may not support 4g in Columbia, but not because it is locked, because it isn't vendor locked at all.
Saw this and figured I post in here instead of starting a new thread. Will I have any problems being rooted or should I return back to stock?

No, but if you want to use LTE in Columbia you might need to revert to an earlier radio version than the v23c radio that Verizon built for Lollipop 5.0.1. Also, in Columbia the carriers there might use band3 for LTE as is common outside the USA.
For more information, check threads like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2968059

From what I saw they use 1700mhz band 4. Might just revert to a basic stock rooted.

AT&T Radio bands info

Does the AT&T M8 have the same radio bands/frequencies as the developer edition?
As far as the specs listed, and as far as I know, yes.
Although some folks have found that the versions sometimes contain band support for bands not listed in a particular versions specs. So the longer answer, is that there may be some small hidden differences (additional support bands on one versus the other).
It might be more useful for you to describe your intent, what you are trying to accomplish etc.
For instance, if you have the necessary bands for your carrier on the Dev Edition, changing to AT&T won't change that.
But the band support is either identical or at the most, minor differences.
I have a gold AT&T M8... It's unlocked s-off, etc... (bought it off Swappa loaded with Dev edition, s-off/unlocked, etc)
My carrier is T-Mobile... currently I have it flashed with the Dev edition of Marshmallow... I THINK my radio's the MM edition... (H-boot shows the radio is listed as 1.29.214500021.24_2G/OS as 6.12.1540.4)
Just trying to make sure I'm running something that won't leave me hanging on radio's... I've dabbled with GPE and T-Mo roms... but wasn't sure if the Dev radio would try and support bands that the hardware won't actually support...
Is there a real way to verify the bands the hardware will support?

The hardware is identical between the T-Mob, AT&T, Dev Ed and most other M8 versions. Band support is determined by the radio baseband firmware.
That being said, you do indeed have the MM radio, and most likely the Dev Ed radio (can't seem to find that radio number, at the moment), which is designed to work on AT&T's network. That means on T-Mob, you will have 2G (voice and EDGE data), 3G 1900 MHz (Band 2) and LTE (AWS); but you will not have 3G (HSPA) where T-Mob is using the HSPA AWS band (3G Band 4). This may or may not be an issue depending on your location. From what I'm reading, T-Mob is in the process of shutting down 3G service on the AWS band anyway, and migrating all 3G service to 1900 MHz (HSPA Band 2), one market region at a time. So you may not need the 3G AWS band, anyway.
However, if you find you need 3G AWS band at your location, you may want to go the the MM T-Mob radio once that update rolls out. Another option (if you really need the 3G AWS band now) might be to roll back to T-Mob Lollipop firmware, but that may cause its own complications.

The last time I ran a T-Mo radio on my M8 HSPA wouldn't work at all because even though they'd refarmed my area, it would try and run on frequencies my phone didn't have... (it was LTE or no data)
And I either was able to get a stable Bluetooth connection, or a stable cellular data connection... but I couldn't get both to be happy at the same time... (I found switching from WiFi to Cellular was problematic under some of the 4.x stock OS's... and then bluetooth was spotty under most of the stock 5.x rom's... and cellular switching wasn't consistent under ASOP...)
I don't know... I think at this point, I'm going to see what happens after the rest of the Sense MM releases come out... if I can't get something consistent, I'll probably work on selling this one and move to a new phone... it's nearly time anyway.

I don't know what you mean that "it would try and run on frequencies my phone didn't have" as that really doesn't make sense (or I'm not properly understanding what you mean).
T-Mob radio is designed to run on their network, so 3G should work whether its refarmed (1900 Band 2) or not (AWS Band 4).

Hard to speculate what the issue there was, as I don't know the specifics of what ROM(s) you were on (version, stock, custom) as well as what firmware number. But what I normally would have recommended, is to baseline to full stock T-Mob using RUU, and go from there; to eliminate mismatches between ROM, firmware, etc.
But it sounds like you are past that point, and not necessarily looking for fixes for things that happened in the past.

I've read elsewhere that if your baseband/radio includes frequencies your phone actually doesn't have hardware to support, that you can get stuck where your device will try and utilize that frequency and not realize that it's failing to communicate... I don't know if this was the situation, but it was significantly impacting my cellular data experience...

When I originally moved to 4.4.x on T-Mobile, I RUU'd the phone... I want to say that I've had to do this once or twice when I soft bricked my phone in the past as well... I've made too many changes to speculate on one baseband/rom or another... I've flopped back and forth between being fully GPE and a combo of Sense Firmware and GPE rom...
At this point, I'm running the MM Dev firmware and rooted Dev Rom from This thread.
Btw, normally, the bluetooth issues I've experienced are pauses in music playback... with my current configuration sometimes I'll see bluetooth disconnect once after it initially connects.... Pandora controls work well. and everything else works as expected.

The only such instance I am aware of on the M8 that is similar to what you describe, is if you try to flash a "GSM" radio (basically any non-CDMA version) to one of the CDMA variants (Sprint, Verizon) which results in a radio brick. Meaning the phone doesn't work, but it breaks the radio. But this is an issue unique to Sprint, Verizon M8.
All other M8 versions (with the odd exceptions of the dual SIM, and M8 Eye - which are really different devices) are identical in hardware and the radios are interchangeable.
Even with the CDMA M8, from what I understand, the hardware is the same as the GSM versions. Its just the partitioning that is different that causes the radio brick.

Actually the reason I got a att m8 off swappa was because of the increased amount of bands over the tmobile version

I am only guessing, but based on what I know about the Moto x, and all moto phones seem to follow the same rules now days, but the bands were what they advertised only. There was no way to add any other ones.
I get that... I think the same radio is in the "Verizon" version as the "Retail Unlocked" version...
Just a matter of Firmware activating the additional bands..

Radio's don't unlock bands as far as I know. The phone usually has the bands or it doesn't. Some phones may have some bands that aren't active, and can be "unlocked", but I'm not sure Moto does this.
But radios, that can be flashed, don't affect which bands are available. Neither does which carriers firmware you flash. If you even can without having severe issues. (again, talking moto here. Other manufacturers can be different) Afaik

Upgrading after root - how easy?

I'm looking to replace my aging HTC One M8 and it looks like the LG V30+ is the right phone for me, since it's got all the features I want (and no notch!) at a price I'm happy to pay.
One thing I definitely want though is Android Pie. I know LG hasn't released it yet for these phones but that it should be out in Q1 or Q2 of this year.
I also want to root my phone. I've skimmed over the instructions and it seems that if you do the rooting process it'll erase all of your private data off your phone, so it seems like I should do this more or less after I get the phone, rather than using it and wiping my stuff later.
But I've read that once the phone is rooted, OTA updates won't apply is that correct? I don't want to use any custom ROMs or anything, just the standard LG firmware. Do I need to flash to some other firmware and then manually install updates? What's the deal? How difficult / fiddly is it?
It doesn't matter if you're rooted or not. You will still be able to update as usual using KDZ. You can even update stock LG ROMs via TWRP with flashable ZIP. Keep in mind that unlocking bootloader needs stock 20a or 20b so if you update to the versions above that, you must downgrade later. So I think it will be nice to unlock your bootloader first after you get your phone, then you can decide whether to root or not after that.

I'm on stock rooted firmware myself.
OTA updates won't apply because you'll have TWRP custom recovery. But full image updates (KDZ) are always better than partial image OTA.
If you have TWRP, you merely install the latest TWRP-flashable zip file of the KDZ. It's like flashing a ROM, but it's stock firmware "ROM". Reflash Magisk then reboot. You "dirty flash" so you keep all your data. Takes 5 minutes?
If you read the WTF instructions, upgrading to newer firmware is mentioned towards the end -- Section 9, specifically. Read those Instructions in a web browser, not XDA app, or stuff will be missing. I also suggest printing them out to reference.
Ok, that's great, thanks!
What these KDZ files? I haven't looked around these forums much yet. Are they officially provided by LG, or do people rip them off their phones and upload here, or is it a mixture?

LG publicly releases the full image updates a few days after the partial image OTA update. The format extension is .KDZ. We post copies here in the forum, down on the dev section. A group of devs have graciously offered to convert the KDZ images to TWRP-FLASHABLE zip file, whenever updates are released.
For people who are rooted, just flash them in TWRP just like dirty flashing a ROM. Keeps all your data. Reflash Magisk, reboot. Done.
As an example, here are the KDZ and TWRP flashable zip files for the Verizon VS996:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/vs996-lg-v30-verizon-vs996-t3865398
The top one was released very recently. You can see there's a link straight to official LG Bridge update server as well as TWRP-flashable zip format, rendered by a Dev to "ROM".
It is possible to update to newer KDZ manually, without using TWRP. A little more complicated. But we don't need to discuss that right now since we do have TWRP flashable zip files.
Thanks very much for your help.

Where do you live, what V30 variant were you considering? If you live inthe U.S., what carrier do you use?
With V30, you can buy other variants and convert them to what you need -- especially North America. (There's one exception, which I'll explain after you answer.). But that's why a lot of people buy "mint" (like new) Sprint LS998 V30+ (128GB), even though they are not Sprint customer. It's often less expensive and has more internal memory than just the 64GB V30. They then unlock bootloader, root it, then convert to what they really want.
I converted two personally from LS998 V30+ to US998 V30+. You can even flash Verizon or AT&T firmware over them.
Or you can find already-converted "mint" US998 V30+ for very good price on eBay. Most US998 V30+ on eBay right now are probably former LS998 V30+ -- but that's OK most of the time.
Sorry, don't mean to confuse you.
I'm in New Zealand. The company I have bought from brings in the phones from Hong Kong. It's a 128GB model, although the website doesn't state which specific variant, but from what is available through other sites here I expect it to be a V30+ H930DS.
I'm aware of the root restriction with the T-mobile variant, which doesn't matter to me.
Is there a benefit to be gained by swapping the variant firmware? Is it just radio bands unlocked depending on carrier?

For H930DS, the other compatible firmware is the H930. Unlike the North American "Frankenstein", flashing H930 over H939DS does not change bands or anything. Hong Kong H930DS just got a new update with DTS stereo framework (needs root to fully enable), so you should stick to your firmware.
Whereas North America Frankenstein fully converts one variant to another, including all bands.

Yeah, my M8 is still a decent phone although I'm just on Marshmallow. The battery is the main problem, it doesn't last super long (although recently I seem to be able to use it for longer? not sure what that's about). I've twice had it now where the battery is so low that when the phone has had less than 15% remaining it just shuts off, seemingly in the middle of some important process, corrupting some important system files and to recover it I essentially had to wipe all of my profile out of it - once this happened on holiday (in a city were I could get wifi, thankfully) and it took me several hours to get it working again, damn annoying.
Have also had it crash when trying to take photos with the flash on. Basically exactly the same problem that Apple got completely lambasted for - the battery is old and can no longer always cope with large spikes of energy draw, which can cause system instability.

Digicel LTE bands are 2/12/17
H930/LS99U/H933 support these bands but wasn't getting any good condition LS99U so went with the 933.
I live in Dominica in the Caribbean.
Also as a side note im stuck on one LTE band (17 cause it has most coverage) .
Tried the adb commands posted in another thread but kept getting the error "error (Cannot erase this partition in unlocked state). "

US998 also has those bands...
http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-US998-Unlocked-v30
US998
CDMA: 800 MHz CDMA
2G GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS (HSPA):850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE Bands: 1/2/3/4/5/7/12(17)/13/20/25/66
I'm on AT&T which uses band 17. But in the U.S. now it's band 12/17. LTE band 17 is a subset of LTE band 12, so about three years ago, AT&T decided to just say their phones have LTE band 12 -- since they support ALL of LTE band 12 (which T-mobile has) as well as the carved out piece of LTE band 12 that is called LTE band 17. Even though AT&T uses LTE band 17, none of their phone specs now actually list LTE band 17 -- it lists LTE band 12 (which includes LTE band 17).
Band 12 contains the 700 MHz lower A+B+C blocks.
Band 17 contains only B+C.
The analogy I use is Miami = LTE band 17.
Florida = LTE band 12.
Miami is in Florida, so there's no need to say I have "Miami" and I have "Florida".
I got into an argument with someone about this a couple of years ago when AT&T changed their designation from Band 17 to Band 12. He was looking for a carrier unlocked phone that had LTE band 17 -- so he could use it on AT&T, and suddenly couldn't find any. I told him just what I told you (LTE band 12 = LTE band 17 on U.S. phones), and he didn't believe me. So, I sent him the link to the online AT&T store where all the AT&T-branded phones are with specs. NO AT&T phones show band 17 any more -- even though AT&T STILL uses LTE band 17! They're just calling it band 12 now... I challenged him to show me any post-2016 AT&T phones with the LTE band 17 -- which he and I both knows AT&T uses. Since 2016, AT&T no longer lists LTE band 17 on their phones specs, but older AT&T phones will STILL show LTE band 17 in the SAME location. Newer phones show LTE band "12" on AT&T in those locations.

US998 also has those bands...

US998
CDMA: 800 MHz CDMA
2G GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS (HSPA):850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE Bands: 1/2/3/4/5/7/12(17)/13/20/25/66
I'm on AT&T which uses band 17. But in the U.S. now it's band 12/band 17. LTE band 17 is a subset of LTE band 12, so a couple of years ago, AT&T decided to just say their phones have LTE band 12 -- since they support ALL of LTE band 12 (which T-mobile has) as well as the carved out piece of LTE band 12 that is called LTE band 17. Even though AT&T uses LTE band 17, none of their phone specs list LTE band 17 -- it lists LTE band 12 (but that has LTE band 17).
Band 12 contains the 700 MHz lower A+B+C blocks. Band 17 contains only B+C.
The analogy I use is Miami = LTE band 17. Florida = LTE band 12. Miami is in Florida, so there's no need to say I have "Miami" and I have "Florida".

It's me being ignorant of that fact that caused me to leave down the 998 and get a 933.
gsmarena was my go to source for bands on the diff models and as you explained the 998 does not show band 17.
i even asked my provider and their response wasn't so helpful.
just went with what seemed safer to me.
might sell the 933 and get a v30+ for the extra storage

It is possible to update to newer KDZ manually, without using TWRP. A little more complicated. But we don't need to discuss that right now since we do have TWRP flashable zip files.

Right, so I've had a look at the available TWRP ROMs and there's only a handful for the H930DS and none for my region (TWN).
So how do I go about flashing a stock KDZ, and will that erase any of my data?
You use LGUP to flash the KDZs. Yes, it will erase all your data, as this is effectively reinstalling the OS as if the device was new from LG.
The KDZ thread should provide instructions. ChazzMatt's thread here is specific to the 930 series: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/h930-lg-v30-european-market-h930-t3779076 - near the bottom he details how to flash KDZ with the appropriate LGUP files as well.
I'm wondering if I can use one of the TWRP ROMs for the H930dS even if they aren't for the TWN region, or would that cause problems? Am I correct thinking the *only* difference is the cell bands enabled? Or do all H930DS support the same bands (except India)? Is there any site that lists the different bands for each region?
