I find the best way is either letting it go for a swim or run over it with a large vehicle. But seriously, what do you mean by that? It's like asking how to remove Windows from your PC. There wouldn't be anything on it to actually use the device.
Wipe partitions
I want to wipe all my partitions (including the kernel) in order to reinstall my firmware. I have rooted my phone and messed up with some kernel settings. I want to erase everything so I can start over. I may be a little stupid to ask for this but sorry. I am a noob. Is there any way?

For most devices, this is not necessary - to wipe everything. Rarely would you ever need to wipe the boot partition (where the kernel is stored), as just flashing another kernel, rom, or reloading the stock firmware with the appropriate tool would take care of this. Why don't we backup a bit and start with which device do you have, what update was it on before you started, and what have you done to it (which rom, kernel, etc) as any or all of those things can affect which steps you should take to resolve your issue.
Fixed it!
Nevermind.. I fixed my issue. There was a problem with com.android.systemui. And about partition wipping.... I managed to do that with SP Flash Tool from MediaTek
Thank you for your support!

Hello everybody,
I use the Cyanogenmod Nightlys on my SGS3. Because I wanted to do a reset, I formatted Cache, System, data, and preload. I deleted all the files from the Internal SD. I thought I could restart my phone and have my Cyanogenmod. But nothing work.
I hope you can help me...

This.
You cannot format everything and delete everything and expect there to still be something..
Thank you for the very fast help. I asked because I didn't want to do anything that fully brick my S3. Sorry for my bad enlish.
My advice is to stay out of rooting and falshing custom roms if your knowledge of the device is in such a poor level you don't know to use odin to go stock..

I wouldn't know that either and I've flashed tons of custom ROMs successfully. This website is surely for people to learn as well as for developers to discuss things with each other; no need to tell somebody to quit rooting just because they made a mistake.
That is a kinda strange statement.
Odin/Heimdall is the only way to root the S3. You expect him to gain knowledge of the rooting/flashing procedure without actually doing it?

It's really hard to hard-brick your phone so that it won't even go to download mode anymore. Flashing custom Roms -and especially CM9- won't cause this.
However you WILL need an efs backup, since that part of your phone could easily get lost and is not possible/very hard to recover.
If I install a kernel, do I have to reinstall everything? Like.. Does it work as an update on the phone, or does it work like a reinstallation?
I tried to search, but I couldn't find anything that answered it.
Btw the kernel is EternityProject
Thanks in advance!

If you are just flashing a kernel, it will not touch the rom, so you shouldn't lose your data. Just make sure that the kernel is compatible with the device and the rom in question. If you flash a ROM, or a ROM/KERNEL combo, you will likely lose everything and start from scratch.
Best practice is to make a nandroid backup of your device before you flash *anything*, just in case, and as an extra precaution, copy the nandroid backup to your computer for safe keeping. It's also not always required, but I recommend wiping your cache and dalvik cache when flashing a kernel, just in case, but this will cause your first boot to take longer, in some cases (and on some older devices specifically) this can take several minutes, but usually doesn't take that long.
If you need anything else, feel free to send me a PM, I'll see if I can help.
New here. (also apologies for probable duplicate topic)
I've rooted a phone in the past with no problem. This time round was with an S2, and I flashed an insecure kernel on it, got a green pass on Odin however it's now stuck on the boot screen with the yellow triangle.
I can access recovery mode and download mode but it will never boot properly, always stuck on the yellow triangle. What's the best course of action from here?
Need a lot of help with this guys as I'd rather not have a bricked phone ><

Seriously dude? Use some common sense please and give relevant information on what you have. What model/variant do you have, rom are you on, what kernel have you flashed?
How do you expect anybody to be able to help you if you dont give such basic info???
Are you sure the kernel supports the rom/version you have installed?

Maybe because you wiped all data....so...there's no ROM to boot up to.
Try flashing one via Odin

Wiping data doesnt wipe rom , It just wipes appdata, ie settings etc. All that happens is a factory reset so when you next boot its back to default. For example you would need to re-enter google account and re-install apss either manually or from a backup.
You can only wipe rom by formatting system partition.

Thought you had me in ignore.
So there's no way you can wipe your OS via recovery? Good to know that, it's like ROM over ROM then. The new one clears the old one.

I did have you on ignore but I still see little boxes saying this comment has been ignored etc which was actually more annoying so I removed ignore.
Yes you can wipe OS via recovery but only by formatting system/deleting partition etc. All the "wipe" options do is remove files that have been created by rom like app settings/cache etc.
Your confusion was probably also the reason why you made a big thing in a previous topic about you trying to avoid wiping data, because you thought it wiped rom? :silly:
Wiping data/factory reset in cwm is one of the best ways to get rid of system issues, Its basically like doing a clean install of Windows on a PC. After you have wiped you can simply restore your needed apps from a backup using Titanium Backup. Other things like sms/mms etc can be also backed up easily and contacts will be synced via Google account.

hum...okay.
I actually know what Factory Reset does, I mean..."factory"..."reset", kinda......gives it away.
And yes, it made sense to me that you could wipe the ROM you are on before installing a new one, just like the format c:/s days in win98.
You learn something every day, speaking of which, how come no one recommends noobs to root their device with exynos abuse? It's because they're noobs and wouldn't be able to handle/understand the exploit?
I still don't do factory resets because I don't need to, and I avoid needing to perform it.

Thanks for the reply Figured if someone was willing to help me I'd give them the information they wanted.
Have Samsung Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) (couldn't tell you what "variant" it is). I was following this guide. It told me to get an insecure kernel from here. The guide said it didn't really matter which kernel I picked so I picked the first one (GT-I9100_BGKF5_insecure) and used Odin to flash it. Got a green pass and the phone began reboot but it's now stuck on the yellow triangle (the warning message that you've flashed an insecure kernel).
I couldn't tell whether there would be compatibility issues as the thread just seems to be one big list of kernels and nothing else. AFAIK the phone was running ICS.
Looking at the replies, I keep seeing factory reset. Is that a liable option to restore my phone back to its original state. I don't care as long the phone works again. If not can someone run through how to fix my predicament I heard if I can access download and recovery mode I should be able to fix it.

Of course, you're not bricked yet.
Before trying your back up, why don't you flash a stock ROM via odin and take a long breath?
This is JB leak.
These are ICS, look for 4.0.3 unbranded.

I know this is leading onto another thread but my phone now is having trouble connecting to my computer. Keep getting "USB not recognized" error. Installed/Uninstalled kies & drivers then installed drivers again alone and still won't recognize it
Tried another usb port? another pc/laptop? sure kies is not running in background? reinstalled kies?
Don't worry, your pc WILL see your device.

seriously!! No ONE can help??? ( i just wanna know how to repair imei number as i dont have any backup from ics and i have a null imei now)
Hi,
Downgrading in general is almost impossible. You might need to do a full wipe. Sometimes it may work without, but you may experience strange problems and will spend more time on solving them compared to a clean install.
When changing ROM editions, you should also format the system partition (TWRP -> advanced wipe, you might find something similar in other recoveries).
Perform a full backup first and keep it on a safe place. It's also recommended to keep a backup of the EFS partition (if you don't have one already).

Not true. ...
You can always downgrade.
Just do a factory reset and full wipe before.
Repair a imei nr. just search the hundreds post here on xda.

Sure, that's what I meant with "formatting the system partition". I just wanted to mention that this is not something like a "smooth" downgrade where you switch to another version and everything else can remain. The term "downgrade" may imply that you just "change" something. In fact you setup a new phone.
Sorry for confusion.

Watch out what you advise people.
"Formatting" is something else as doing a wipe.
My system is formatted to f2fs file system.
If someone tick the option to format the system in odin it good end up with a brick.
Then you need to flash a rescue system with pit file.

While I was talking about TWRP, I thought this was clear. However, I should have used the correct term. You are totally right. Will try to be more precise in future. Thanks for the hint.
The Auto Rotation worked on Miui, and then Lineage when I flashed it. But YouTube didn't work
Then I wanted to try Pixel experience, youtube still didn't work, then auto rotate didn't work
Then I tried Havoc, my favorite UI so far; youtube finally worked, but auto rotate still didn't work, and now Fire Emblem wouldn't install via APK or show up as compatible in the play store...
I want to know if there's a fix for auto rotate or a lightweight rom that will give me rotate and spare me from app issues.

Probably caused rotation bug yourself, dont remember exactly now, but you wiped partition you shouldnt have wiped. Maybe vendor partition, im not 100% sure. Just flash stock rom, get everything working again, and dont wipe what you not supposed to wipe. Do it only on cache, data, system. Also, be sure to follow guides exactly when flashing stock rom, you can easily brick the device if you relock bootloader or do other mistakes.
Edit. Remembered, its persist partition. You wiped it and lost all your sensors. There is absolutely no reason to wipe it. Just do everything as suggested in tutorials and everything will work as its supposed to.

Any wiping I did was Dalvik, Internal, Data, System, and Cache, and if you can even count it, SD and OTG. There were no options to wipe vendor. Maybe vendor got overwritten, but I never specifically went to an option where I could wipe or delete any partitions. Everything I do/did was is in the Wipe or Install menu, with the exception of language change.
But now everything is destroyed because the mi flash tool bricked my device. I now learned that what the tool is known for, but being my first Xiaomi devices, it's not exactly on the user manual or common knowledge that Xiaomi likes bricking devices. I only heard of it after I started having problems
I wasn't cautious about the actions I was making because never before had I owned a device I couldn't recover from, including bricks. So I figured anything I did, I could just reverse it and go to stock

Im not arguing my ineptitude, you're right...
But the official flashing tool shouldn't be bricking devices regardless if there is or isn't a locked bootloader option, and should probably warn the user before hand the risks.
The flashing tool is supposed to be saving people from bricks, not causing them. Until I bricked my device, I wasn't seeing the "oh man I bricked my device using this" or "don't do this you'll brick your device" comments, it wasn't until after I did, did I have to search my issue.
But I've had time to sit down and tinker, I did manage to get it up and running regardless that the bootloader was locked.
Now my biggest regret is how I had to mangle the paint job just to get the damn thing open. By far one of the most difficult covers I had to remove

It shouldnt, same as you shouldnt be flashing custom made roms by random developers. Yet we do . If you only use phone as it was supposed to be used, and flash only official firmwares you will never brick.
