Hello everyone!
I'll get this out of the way now, I'm a noob and I'm finally bursting the cherry of posting on here even though I've referenced this site for several years now for different phones, roms and rooting. In other words, please be patient with me if this post is somewhere else and I missed it.
Anyways, as the post topic asks, did anyone order the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 developer edition? If so, did you guys get it? What do you all think of it?
I thankfully ordered mine at 6:30 pm the day it came out before it went on back order, so either samsung wasn't planning on so many ordering and didn't make many or its a really popular phone. I'm waiting on the UPS guy to show up here with my phone today and I'm getting antsy.
Ordering from samsung and checking on its status yesterday was a nightmare because so many departments couldn't find my order number and I almost told them to cancel the order. Glad I didn't.
Does anyone know if you can take it to the store and get insurance on it or where to get mobile insurance on it? This is the first time I ever bought off of contract and do not want to waste my $715.49 investment should something happen to it. (Mom of a 9 month old, anything can and will happen.)
Thanks for the help and happy experiences with the new phones!
I don't think the Google Edition S4 will work on Verizon. Like other Google phones, it's GSM unlocked but I don't believe it has the proper bands to function on Verizon. You may want to research and/or possibly cancel your oder if you plan to use it on a CDMA network.
That said, anyone get a dump of the rom yet? I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone ports it for our phones (assuming partitions are the same - they should be).

Huh? I didn't buy a google edition S4, I bought the developer version. It will work fo verizon.
My mistake. The GE S4 and One became available on the Play Store yesterday. I thought you were talking about that. Which another thread in this forum raises some interest that the GE may work on Verizon.
Sorry for the thread de-rail.

Would have bought if 32gb.
I ordered one yesterday. My DROID bionic has been flailing, and I want to keep unlimited data. I can't wait to start playing with it! This will be my first foray into playing with ROMs and such.
P.S. 64GB microSD cards are like half off on amazon, at least they were yesterday. Got one of those too since only comes with 16GB :/
Make sure you give the dev's the AOSP rom from it so that we can get the IR remote working on AOSP builds... SO [email protected]!!!
Wait, it doesn't come with touchwiz right?
I read it does come with TouchWiz on droid-life, just not all the verizon crap. I guess I'll find out Monday when it's supposed to show up.

Hey no problem, so many phones going out at once, its easy to get confused.
Now all I need is that darn UPS guy here already and I'll let ya'll know what it does/doesn't have on it if someone doesn't beat me to it. And I still wish they would have done it as a 32 gig version, but I don't see that coming... at least to verizon anyways.
Mine is in transit; should be here Monday. From what I understand, it does come with VZ bloatware but once rooted, you can ROM away.
and iewctal
So update here.
I just got the device, getting verizon to activate it was a pain because several techs kept saying "they don't support a developer device" but I finally got it taken care of.
Yes it has bloatware, will be taking care of that.
Also is not rooted, will be looking up ways to do that now to make sure I do this right.
Too bad there isn't a one click root for this thing, I'd really like to save some time than fighting doing it on a mac.

Thanks for the update and the warning about VZW and lack of knowledge. It amazes me this info is not flowed down to the carrier's support team, especially when it is made for that carrier and it was announced over a month ago.

Hey no problem, I actually got one tech now going to put herself on the waitlist to get one because she didn't know it existed. I'm hoping that after the hour I spent on the phone they now know that its out there and to be ready. The phone does not come with a SIM card so if you can pick up a card early and have it ready it may save some driving time/hassle.
Does anyone know of a simple and fast root method that works? I'm curious to see how it works with an unlocked bootloader and very surprised that it didn't already have root access. Maybe that's the noob talking here, but I was hopeful.

I don't know what size that card is. I had a samsung droid charge (horrible phone) and its card didn't fit in it. It needs a micro SIM. If you have time before yours comes in, I'd be safe and just get one free from verizon.
Oh one other thing I forgot, you can add insurance from verizon to protect your device. They will cover it!

Thanks again. And..I just opened Bionic and it doesn't look like a micro SIM. It looks rather large to me so I will be visiting VZW asap. LOL They should not charge, correct? I have heard of customers getting charged.

Hope to see if someone can Unlock the Bootloader for our regular i545
I believe this has been posted before, but I wanted to bring it back to life.
I received a new phone from Asurion (I'm on Verizon.) today. It came prepacked with MK2.
You can imagine the frustration with this that I had after having AOSP KitKat on my previous GS4, and I'm willing to do just about anything to bring the new one to a firmware in which I can unlock the bootloader.
Anyway, here is the Change.org link: http://www.change.org/petitions/sam...ock-the-bootloader-of-the-verizon-s4-sch-i545
Were only 340 signatures away.
Good luck

Well I signed it what the hell. I just don't think they care though.
They're too much into the big picture to care about us folks who want to flash ROMs . they made the dev s4 to address this, I think that's where they will stay. They'll just end up losing people like us as customers as we move to the other carriers that don't lock them down.
Hey I'm with you though... Why not try. Doesn't cost anything.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I agree. The big picture is what Samsung cares about the most. (They are turning more and more into Apple everyday.)
However, maybe with a stroke of good luck and 1000 petition signatures...

To be entirely honest, I'm not sure. Although you do sound correct.
However, I'm sure if this petition make 1000 signatures, Change.org would get it sent to the leads of the departments in both companies. It's called CHANGE.org for a reason, and if they weren't to do that, I would be genuinely surprised. I guess we'll just have to get it signed and see what happens! :fingers-crossed:

Also, Knox was created by Samsung either way. Meaning that they technically could come out with a BL unlock, if they really wanted to for Verizon customers. (unless legal issues?)
I'm not sure, but I suspect Samsung is looking to expand into a corporate environment where security is king. I can see the possibility of selling unlocked bootloaders to those customers who know the risks involved, but their challenge is to protect the security of their products. I don't know where Blackberry is with the ability to "root" their phones, but when I was on the Storm, all kinds of people were looking to unlock their devices and were stymied by the security measures in place.
enterprise clients who represents the single largest bulk of cell phone sales vs those who mod their phones are driving the security for good reason...modders can purchase the dev edition with an unlocked BL if they want to...
safestrap is our option currently and gives us of plenty of choices.

Well of course they could, Samsung does the actual "locking" of course. But it's the carrier that makes them do it.
To be honest 1,000 signatures is a joke compared to millions of enterprise customers.

Please unlock the bootloader of the SCH-I545, respectively. We wouldn't want this device to be retired due to the fact that the people are not fully satisfied with it in its current state.

I'm not signing that. It doesn't even make sense. ITYM "respectfully." And, they're not going to retire a phone because people are not fully satisfied, they retire phones when they don't sell or a newer model comes out.
And why not call it what Verizon calls it - the Samsung Galaxy S4? Do you think some VP keeps track of the phones by model number?

Such writing. Much horrible. Wow. If you want to make a petition you may want to proofread and/or learn the English language first. However, even if the petition was properly worded it would not help to unlock the bootloader any more than me praying for it to be unlocked. Nice try though.

Not to mention that from a hardware standpoint, this phone is still pretty good a year after its release.
Funny fact is the verizon rep spoke yesterday to us saying "all of our phones are unlocked and are free to do what you want with them"

That's true from a carrier perspective. He was referring to "SIM locks," which prevent a phone from being used on a different carrier. People who've dealt with GSM phones are more familiar with the concept - other than some pre-pay phones, I'm not aware of any US CDMA ones which were ever locked (and they didn't have SIMs, so it's not a true SIM lock, they did it in a different way).

if you want to mod a phone, a developer edition is available
I'm sorry but I'm completely confused by your attitude toward this. Here you are on the largest modding website known to man and by your post count you've been here for quite a while. Yet you solution is "buy a dev phone".
I guess that might make sense for the devs who are creating roms for the community, but what about there userbase? Are you saying every single person on these boards (with a locked bootloader) should purchase a dev phone? I mean you might as well just close the site at that point because the userbase is going to dwindle, and then you've just got dev's making roms for devs.
I bought this phone, it is now my property and i should have the option to do with it what i please.
I guess I'll have to start buying dev car's and dev computers when i want to make mods to them too with that kind of attitude.

It's not about the attitude, it's about not much could be done to get Verizon to side with us in giving us unlocked bootloaders. Up to this day there has not being an unlock for the S4, Note 3, or newly updated S3. With it being so tight the only way to go is to buy a developer edition. User base or not, the answer for a bootloader unlock isn't going to just fall out of the sky the chances only get slimmer by the holes that get patched up from each loophole. Of course I see your side of your case but I also see why he'd say buy have a dev phone or simply jump carriers or a different phone that can be unlocked.

I would love to know this also, I called Verizon yesterday and the sales rep said he knew of no plans to carry the device.
( )
Strong hint given to me says Q4 AT&T. Possibly T-Mobile too.
This is ridiculous, the longer they wait to release this phone the sooner it will be outclassed.
It is coming this Friday the 26th to ATT.
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-alpha-available-att-september-26
I know this topic is a few days old, I stopped into an at&t this weekend and had a look. I really like this device. it's light weight and has great fit in the hand. I'm not sure if I can bring myself to leave big red for the device, I can only hope the S6 follows the same design language.
A lot of folks are bummed out that Samsung has been so quiet about the launch of the Gear S in the USA. Why do you guys think it's so quiet? I thought a dedicated "speculation" thread would be a good read.
I found it interesting that Samsung Mobile comments on almost every post on their Facebook page, but when I asked about the Gear, not a word.
Does anyone else find it odd that AT&T launched a "preview" so long ago?
Has anyone see a working one at AT&T with full functionality?

I was at a Samsung demo event recently & got to wear one for a while but no at&t stores have any yet. The most likely place for an early preview is the Samsung experience thing at best buy but nothing there yet either.
They're saying it'll hopefully launch by black fri, but who knows. Even Samsung field reps haven't gotten theirs yet. My guess is that the delay is because it's going on the at&t network & therefore requires a lot of compliance testing. Otherwise field reps would have had them weeks ago
There is Samsung experience nearby. I will try to check it out within a few days.

Great question, ha. I wondered the same thing. I saw one, but it was not working.
http://9to5google.com/2014/10/30/samsung-gear-s-release-date/
I searched the model and AT&T. I can't seem to find anything relevant. I seriously want to buy this phone. But, I want the international unlocked for the extra ram/rom. Checking the bands. It appears the phone has the right ones for AT&T(well actually a MVNO of them).
I have yet to find any review anywhere with someone saying they are using it on their network. So, I know I will probably get roasted for this. But, I am buying two. If anyone could offer any advice or actual usage. I would sleep better.
Please and thank you.

Thank you for pointing me to that web page. It does help. From what I can tell. It looks like the 1196 is missing band 17. I would be ok at 3G if I am reading this correctly. But, either way. It is a gamble. I am currently using a MVNO called Good2Go. From my current phone. I can see that I am using band 5.
Well, I have a decision to make. I hope my wife does not kill me..lol
I was really hoping someone on AT&t would chime in. Even though it could change depending on the area. I am going to try it..Thank you.
