So I had plugged my device in to my computer, and it updated to 4.3. I did a factory reset, but it is too late. Does this mean my bootloader is now locked without a way to unlock at the moment? I came across ★ [Rom][I605VRUEMJ9][4.3] Stock Root Odex/Deodex [12/08/13]★ - xda-developers but it appears that I need an unlocked bootloader in order to flash it. Any advice on what I can do? I tried the instructions at Root I605VRUEMJ9 - Verizon Galaxy Note 2 SCH-I605 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Firmware | True Android | #1 Custom Android Resource but got a failed (and am now worried that the KNOX counte ris stuck at 0x1.

For the moment, yes. Attempting to return to a previous stock ROM, even via ODIN, will fail - I tried this myself last night. ODIN hangs on trying to install the last part of the ROM (the bootloader, if I remember right). If you do try to use ODIN to restore a stock ROM, you will need to run a repair install of the 4.3 ROM (you'll lose all data on the phone). Fun stuff.
So in short, we're locked & unrooted if we update using the official update via Verizon's update software.

Damn. So I am completely willing to wipe everything. I already have everything backed up. If I am willing to have everything wiped, is there a way around it, or just wait for the good folks here at xda to stick it to Verizon

You can try to root with kingo (google it, xda won't allow links to it) but you may be out of luck on unlocking the bootloader again unless someone finds another exploit.

I saw references to kingo, but it looked sketchy. Can you tell more about it, and perhaps why XDA doesn't allow links?

Nothing I can tell you that you can't find searching for it. Plenty of conversations about it already. No need for another one really.

Thanks - I did find a lot threads. It does look sketchy, though nothing definitive.
Unless someone has found a root method for one of the other Samsung 4.3 builds, you better go out to your nearest wholesale store and buy the jumbo size of Vaseline.

Kingo works on Note 3. Obviously different device but in theory it should work.

I did an OTA of 4.3 on my Note 2 already and was able to root using Kingo, no problems.

Ditto here. Though trying to flash a recovery (say, through Goo Manager) trips the Knox counter....and fails to boot ('unauthorized software' message)

Yup. Bootloader is locked. That's why there's a sticky saying not to take OTA's.

Aren't both the S4 and N3 4.3 builds rooted? Maybe you're thinking bootloader unlocking???
After OTA my n2 lost root.
I can also confirm, that Kingo roots the N2 after taking the Verizon OTA, but the bootloader remains locked. For me acquiring root again was great, because I use the Xposed framework a lot and many other apps that need root. As for the bootloader, I'm sure that sooner or later, one of the great devs will kick butt and get it unlocked. For those guys that challenge is like an itch.

Wouldn't bet on it. S4 and Note 3 are both locked and will likely remain that way. Never say never but the likelihood is slim.
You're right and honestly as long as I have, root I don't care much anymore. If it happens great, if it doesn't ok. Sooner or later we will upgrade to a new toy. Lol

So, now that Safestrap is no longer supported, do we have any ideas about what we can expect to happen with HDX modding into the future? Just wondering because HDX's usefulness is limited without further development, which I hope will continue to strive, but I'm also aware that there's a less user pool and demand compared to other popular devices.
With an actual true recovery there is no need for safestrap and there might be much more now in store. It's exciting

Are you talking about TWRP? I thought the whole point of having Safestrap was to be safe and be able to boot back into your normal HDX, which isn't something TWRP can do (as far as I know). If you flash something via TWRP and you mess something up, it's a pain in the ass to unbrick HDX, especially when we don't have a fully functional/reliable custom ROM yet. That's my understanding anyway. I agree that it would be exciting to see further development for HDX though.
Safestrap is a workaround because we did not have a real recovery. Twrp replaces safestrap because it is a real recovery which lets us make adjustments, break things, and fix them.

Oh ok. I didn't know that. The toolkit guideline had both options to install twrp and safestrap, so I thought they had different purposes. They should just get rid of safestrap altogether so newcomers don't get confused.
They can't get rid of it yet, because as far afik no one has ropled back from the newer software to software which can run twrp. Those people can run Safestrap, but all the be careful rules apply. There is an exploit which allows the older bootloader to use twrp.

fresh approach to apollo rooting?
If I understand this twrp thread correctly, this is the first fresh approach to hdx modding in months...
What do you think?

I'm on LTE thor, and I had been paying attention to the thor version, but I won't be messing with anything until there's at least one custom ROM that can run well on the LTE version.
Now they need to unlock the bootloader and get OTG working. That's the only reason I haven't bought another HDX yet. I need to be able to use different USB devices. The 7in kindle fire can OTG with external power. The HDX with its massive processor should also.
So does the future look bright for all of us on 4.5.2? Is it possible that we all can move to an unlocked bootloader, rooted, with custom recovery and Lollipop or KitKat ROMs?
Or should I just unload this thing fast and get a hold of a Nexus 7? I need to be able to stream Netflix to my Chromecast, and so far, I'm unable to do this on the HDX 4.5.2...
the phone in question is a T mobile Galaxy S5, used to be mine running full root since 4.4.4 and had cn 11 on it, now wife is useing it and she wated it stock, so I odined the latest stock t mobile 5.0 firmware onto it, since then it has updated twice to 5.1.1 as I'm not too familiar with 5.1.1 I figured I better ask if it can be rooted.
if it can it will be much appreciated, right now it has done random reboots three times so far today and she is about to go back to Applel
5.1.1 can be rooted using hispasian's kernel. It can find in the android development thread. BTW, tell your wife that Apple is tight about "rolling back" and/or if at all, to previous ios versions if the new version stinks. I was lucky to perform rollbacks on older iphone generations but the newer ones are harder for obvious reasons. I stayed on 4.4.2 because of towelroot -- I'm not too fond of 5.1.1 because of the lag and unstable root methods right now.
Any questions? Please let me know. We would wan't want your spouse to join the "dark side" we call Apple. =) <couldn't resist the star wars pun there>
Thanks I'll loom there here in a minute I want her to be an android person I like androids better because you can remove the SD card, Apple has no SD card, plus as long as it's not a s6 you can swap batteries, I usually keep two spares in my Jeep when we go looking in NC for houses just in case

I meant FOL1 in the original thread
Please excuse my stupidity
well in another thread i was wondering if flashing TWRP+CM still works on FOL1 & the user said yes, so.... i'm sure root is always possible, unless your question is to keep knox (you're probably out of warranty anyway)
there are modified TW roms that are prerooted if self rooting fails
random reboots with what apps installed? disable any you dont use, disable gestures, samsung crap, etc etc...
I don't want knox, I don't want 5.1.1 either what I want is to put 4.4.4 on in or 4.4.2 and root it real fast before it updates

not sure what the rush is, there is no such thing as sudden updates that you cant stop, if you flash 4.4 then it's stuck on 4.4, but what if the newer baseband wont work well with the old android?
also, 4.4 is crap, you'll be insecure with fewer features & so on
i really find it unlikely that 5.1.1 is causing all problems, also you could even try 5.0.1

I tried but I was too late it went to 5.1.1, it is rooted though so until XDA cones out with a way to unlock the bootloader I have to wait. Because if I try installing TWRP like I did at first it hangs on the custom love indicator screen

No, but it's hilariously easy to get Samsung to honor a warranty on a device with a tripped Knox flag, if that's what you're worried about

I'm simply curious... how difficult would it be for one to compile TWRP and obtain root for the T-Mobile V10?
I've been a tech geek for awhile and I'm somewhat proficient in Linux as I've gained quite a bit of experience playing about and running my own server. Setting up a small dev Ubuntu install wouldn't be much of an issue. I would love to help bring something to this community if at all possible. The first goal would be to render TWRP usable on the V10. In our case, we have an unlocked bootloader but no compatible custom recovery?
So I guess my question is, where does one start?
Thanks ahead of time for the responses! As a new V10 owner, I'm happy to meet you guys! :good:

sorry for such a simple question but I need expert and/or experienced advise.
I have a samsung galaxy S4 AT&T I337 Ver 5.0.1 firmware OK2.
Out of contract
I want to rid myself of the bloatware, my principal objective.
I worry about not getting security updates once rooted, (even though at&t is not quick about doing updates anyway). Do I just track the forums here to look for updates? Will i have to go back to kitkat for every update?
And second I have a mac air computer, so odin may not be easily done without ready access to a pc., and maybe not at all. I understand I have to odin back to 4.4.4 and then update with a rooted rom. I haven't found recent experiences using jodin on this particular device, and the jodin posts I found indicate it doesn't flash a large file. I don't know if I would be doing that or not.
Thanks for your all's opinion.
Do you play Pokemon go, then no, else of course root it!
AT&T phones have locked bootloaders, thus no root.
