Need help - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys if I buy a pre-paid no contract moto e, do I need to activate it. Because I wanna use a moto e as a mini-tablet

No. Activation or use with a SIM is optional. Any android phone can be used as a WiFi only device or other purposes like MP3 player.

That's how I use it, just make sure to put your device on airplane mode so the cell radio won't drain the battery and keep asking you to activate every few minutes.

[Q] Can you use the Atrix without any carrier?

I bought the atrix when it came out and left my family and their plan for it (I was still using a first gen Razr and wanted a smartphone/data), I need to save money so I'm joining back up with my family, my choices are to have them switch over to ATT or have me switch over to Tmobile. (Comparable price, so that's not the concern)
I would not be able to use 4g with tmobile so would need a new phone.
So my question is: Can I still use the atrix over wifi without using either att, tmobile or any carrier? Since I paid so much for it and its better than any free phone I would like to keep using it for wifi if i switch to tmobile.
OR
Should I just have my family switchover to ATT since they don't care and I can keep my phone/service? The monthly price is pretty much the same and they definitely get all new phones with ATT.
I'm thinking to have everyone switch to ATT unless tmobile offers something great, but I still want to know if its possible to use if I have to switch.

Yes you can, you just have to disable insert sim card screen. Follow the instructions in the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXDj-h1DEAM
You could just sim unlock it, flash a European radio, since those support tmobile bands and use the atrix on tmobile.

Nope. T-Mobile uses different frequencies in Europe than they do in the US so flashing a radio wont change a thing. You'd still get edge/2G though. And T-Mobile has started adopting AT&T's 3G/FauxG bands so depending on where you live, you might luck out and get 3G.
But yes, just download a VoIP app like Skype, Groove IP or Talkatone and you're set for wifi calls.
If you drop AT&T, get the unlock code first (even if you are going w/o any cell sefvice and do not need the code now). This is free, and will no longer be an option once you cancel with AT&T.
I use my ATRIX without service, using wifi only and use sipdroid with my google voice number for voip calling and you could use gv for texts as well. There is even an app, GV Full Integration, which you can use your gv number for texting through your native sms app or Go Sms. If you rather an inexpensive service, straight talk, $45 a month unlimited, just watch your data consumption, I believe they consider 2 GB a month "excessive usage" and will cut off your data as a warning but will restore it by calling customer service. Second time, no more service period.

I'm using mine right now without mobile data.
Save more battery power by installing Network app by philipp mangelow to shut off the cell radio.

AT&T Android Phone without SIM

I would like to buy and Android phone that is on AT&T but, more of an iPod Touch. Not for a data phone or on contract just the phone without the sim.
Is this possible?
What might I need to do?
Any other things I should know?
Of course this is possible
You may search in the internet for instance on amazon.com
Or u can go to your mobile phone store and ask there
I think you can close the thread
Okay, well I wasn't sure if it would be like some phones that would say SIM REQUIRED or Emergency Calls only and you would have to insert a sim.
you can buy an android pad.
yeah thats what i would suggest u too
of course u can use the phone without a sim if you have wifi u can go to the internet and you can call people over voip applications

[Q] Verizon Moto E xt1528 Unlock LTE bands?

I snagged one of the $29 dollar Verizon Wireless Moto E LTE Model XT1528 and was wondering if anyone has been able to use any of the guides I have found on XDA for enabling GSM and LTE bands on the XT1528
It is on backorder and I won't get it until around June 22nd so I don't have the phone yet to try yet.
I didn't see a thread for this model so wanted to ask on the forum.
If you did get this to work, can you share the steps you took to accomplish it. I am planning on giving this to my wife to replace her original gen Moto G as she keeps running out of space on it due to not having a SD memory card. We are currently using Cricket Wireless for our Cell phone service. If I can turn on the necessary LTE bands for AT&T / Cricket this would be additional Icing on the cake for this sweet deal.
Thanks for any info you can share.

It's pretty much as described in the threads.
I removed the VZ sim, put in one of my other sims, got out of the VZ/moto setup, turned on wifi and downloaded one of the apps that let me change the radio bands to verify it was set for GSM/LTE, profit.
Nothing else was needed to get LTE on my Cricket (AT&T) or T-Mobile sims.

Upon switching to a different sim, did any of you guys experience the signal constantly changing from 4gLTE down to E or no signal or emergency calls only? happens to me quite often resulting in me always having to switch the cellular network from 4g to 2g, reboot, let it finish booting then change back to 4gLTE, then it is fine for a while(couple hours maybe), then falls back to E or no signal/emergency calls only again. annoys me quite a lot..
P.S. I'm on T-Mobile btw and I've provided a video file for exampleMoto E 2nd gen VZW on TMO with cellular network issue

Can't say I've had that happen, but then again, it's a backup phone for me, not my primary. I just tested it to see if it worked and went back to my main phone after that.
How long will it work normally before that happens? Does it do it with the wifi off?

prepaid verizon moto e on non prepiad verizon plan

Hello,
i have a quick question about the Verizon prepaid moto e
would the prepaid moto e work on a regular Verizon plan? or can it be modded to work on a regular plan?
was looking to pick one up to replace my Verizon Galaxy s3. its getting aged and im sick of the lack of software updates(doesn't help i got my GS3 late enoufgh it had the update that where the bootloader couldn't be unlocked/bypassed)

It works, just plug in the sim and go. I don't know if vzw will issue a post paid sim for it, we've only tried with sim swap from other device.

You can't unlock the bootloader of the Verizon Moto E 2015 and there is no root method either. It sucks.
I have a Sprint Moto E 2015 and I unlocked the bootloader and tried to flash the Verizon firmware to it, but it doesn't work on Verizon. I believe there is some mechanism that prevents you from overwriting the Sprint radios because no matter how many times I flashed the Verizon radios, the Sprint radios always were there on reboot.
So there is no way to have a rooted Moto E 2015 that works on Verizon. AFAIK, the only 2 devs who were working on root/unlocking bootloader on Motorola phones are jcase and beaups but they no longer seem interested in doing that for Motorola phones.
Wow I'm stupid should've checked here first .
I'm lobbing this thing in our bass pond and getting the cricket model ,any problems I wonder with there moto s

Pretty sure cricket is locked as well. That's an ATT MVNO, correct?
US Cellular xt1526 is probably your best bet for a US phone. Bootloader is unlockable, and it's SIM unlocked out of the box - takes a little settings jiggling when putting a new ROM on, but mine works on AT&T. It doesn't have all the VZW radio bands, so if you want VZW coverage it probably won't work well for you.
If you're looking for a root/rom-able Moto E LTE for use with Verizon, the only easy to obtain option is the US Cellular XT1526, which works on Verizon's CDMA and LTE B2 & B4, but lacks Verizon's primary LTE Band 13.
The better option is the LRA XT1529, which has all of Verizon's bands (including Band 13), and is SIM unlocked, BL-unlockable, and root/rom-able, but it's very hard to obtain.

If you have paid for at least 1 month of Verizon prepaid service, I would not trash the device, I would sell it. If you have paid for at least 1 month of Verizon prepaid service then your Verizon Moto E will work on Verizon postpaid service and I am sure that someone would buy the phone from you for at least $30 to use on postpaid. They go for $30 new but you have to pay for 1 month of service on prepaid, minimum of $30, before you can use them on postpaid.
To check to see if your Verizon prepaid Moto E is unlocked for postpaid use, go here:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/device-recycle/?custType=1
and appraise your device - if you get to the part where you type in the IMEI and you get an error saying your device is ineligible for trade-in, then it can't be used on post-paid. But if you don't get that error and the system proceeds to ask you questions about the condition of the device, then it is unlocked for postpaid.
I like this phone but I may try something different all together.any androids easy to mod available with cricket?maybe something without a locked boot loader?

I think we all thought you were on Verizon since you wanted to use a Verizon model. For people who are not on Verizon, there are much better models to get.
If you're going to use it on Cricket, you can go with either the Moto-direct XT1527 (the AT&T/GoPhone/Cricket XT1527 has a locked bootloader), or the US Cellular XT1526 (the Sprint/Boost/Virgin/MVNO XT1526 are domestic SIM locked). Both models have all the core bands used by AT&T/Cricket, are bootloader unlockable, and have root/ROM.
I'm on Verizon prepaid something I jumped into when I had a little extra cash but cricket is available and I like their plans so I'll switch I just really want something easy to root ,ROM and still medium sized like my moto e and cost 150 or less

If your gonna to switch to cricket your options are very limited cause honestly there's not really any phones with custom ROM support(thats updated regularly)with a medium size screen for a cheap price. The moto g LTE model(first gen) goes about 50-60 on eBay. But if you really like the moto e, I would just look for a us cellular model and see how your area does with band 2,4 with Verizon. If its to much dropping out of LTE for you(each area is different) or it may be perfect and have no difference in LTE coverage that sounds like your best bet. Either way the us cellular model will work with Verizon/and att

Yes, but you will most likely only get a 2G EDGE connection, as the US models only have the bands used in US/CA.
