This is my first thread, so please contact me if I have done something wrong
Main criterias that need work
-Sound loudness
-Ram management
-Performance
-Battery life
-Gaming
Better speaker volume
One of the biggest problem of cm11 based roms is the ow speaker volume. This can be Overcome by using VIPER4ANDROID
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191223
It improves sound loudness by a great deal. TRY IT YOURSELF!!!!! Tick xloud down in settings and see the miracle happen:good::good:{Install app drivers properly and use methods as mentioned in app thread}
Performance
-Use interactive governor as it gives the best performance. Use performance in settings to do so or downloada 3rd party app from play store. For eg No-frills cpu control { Dont forget to apply set on boot.}
-DONT ENABLE AUTO BRIGHTNESS. It locks frequency at max.
-Dont use ART. It is just negligibly faster but can cause problems with certain apps
-If you are facing, strange problems that are other are not facing, flash stock ics ftf file in flashmode using flashtool and then flash the rom's kernel in fastboot mode and install the rom
Ram management
Try fly-on mod if it suits you [did suit me, I run whatsapp, VIER4ANDROID, HD widgets, Google Search, launcher, all without any of them redrawing
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226373
Dont forget to take a nandroid backup
[According to me, its better than supercharger especially for our device as fly on mod is optimized for 512mb devices, I even got random reboots with supercharger, so use fly on mod]{yes, they do exactly the same thing}
-Download memory manager from play store and set the values as follows
8,10,20,24,26,28
Dont forget to tick apply on boot
-According to me, dont use any task killers and similar 3rd party apps
- I dont even use KSM or purging or assets[you may if you like to
-Greenify Ram hungry apps such as whatsapp and facebook
-Download any root explorer and then go to build.prop in system
Then search for ro.config.low_ram=false and change from false to true
though this will cause to transperant notificatin disappear, believe me, it will help a lot
Better Battery Life
-If you want battery life, use conservative or lionheart as cpu governor
-Follow certain simple techniques such as
1 Switch off wifi and mobile network when not in use
2 Use 2g network whenever possible over 3g
3 Switch off bluetooth or NFC when not in use
-Use BETTERBATTERYSTATS from play store to know whats using your battery
-use Wakelock Detector from play store to know which apps are waking up your device
-Geenifying apps saves battery life even
-Sometimes happens is due to frequent changes of roms, battery gets uncaliberated and shows wrong stats. Follow these steps
1 Charge your phone overnight
2 Use the whole battery the next day and then again charge battery from 0-100%
-Airplane mode- use airplane mode during night, it will save overnight battery drain
-Turn off auto sync and location, it will save both battery and RAM
-Use Juice Defender from play store{It isnt just a placebo, it really works}
-Refer to this guide for detailed info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969741
Better gaming performance
-Reduce game graphics to improve performance
1 Download and install xposed module http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
2 Download and install app settings http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437377
3 In app settings, choose the game you wanna play.
4 Reduce the resolution to lowest
5 Reduce density from 240 to 150 and save the settings and reboot
By this you will get lower graphics but smooth gaming experience, especially on heavy 3d games
-Fly on mod will also help
-Use xbooster and set gaming mode
-Set ondemand as cpu governor and row as io scheduler
-Use airplane mode while playing offline games, it will stop internet services like location, syncing etc and clear ram as well as cpu performance
Using these tricks your gaming performance will increase significantly
By following these easy steps, we can make our Kit Kat roms fit for daily use
Again, if I did something wrong, please inform me

Thanks bro, I was bored with the sound issue... but calibrate battery helps, because sometimes my phone gets crazy and power off with no charge, then I just turn it on and there's almost 50% of battery!

Nice thread
Thanks information is very useful :cyclops:
Some notes.
V4A is not compatible with walkman. (If you have it and its libs installed it won't work. )
Auto brightness doesn't lock my frequency at max. Probably ROM specific. (i use Weekly 4 cm 11 xperia p)
Flashing stock should not make a difference as entire /system partition is wiped on flashing.
Other than that all is good. (Wipe battery stats will have negligible effects and only when there ate major changes (like power hal) in ROM and you flash without wiping data. )

Thanks for the solutions! But I 've got some questions:
1. interactive governor - is it really the best one? If so, why it's not set as default?
2. You advise to not use ART...but what exactly it is (and where it is)?
Cheers!

Honestly I don't see nearly any difference in speaker loudness using Viper4Android. Of course, sound quality and volume are much better on headset. But it doesn't change too much with speaker problem.

Thank you for the answer.
If xloud is the last option in menu, yes I ticked it (sorry but in my native language that option was traslated and isn't even little similar to xloud now)
Of course I have installed drivers properly because as I said before there is huge difference on headset quality. But the difference on speaker is barely 'noticeable'...
I did not find any xloud option. Is it extra loud ?

When I run flashtool (CM11) I can see something like this:
BusyBox v1.21.1-kk bionic (2013-11-24 11:52 +0100) multi-call binary
Isn't it enough? What is the reason to install busybox from Google Play Store?
@pentoza
Not every one connects their cm 11 phone to flashtool. No point. And for updating busybox its better to use play store
@chetan_p
Well I tried all of that. Never worked. Gave up eventually. On stock .100 (xp) the driver never installed.

I found best battery is stock rom 5.9.26S from ALBA in Russia forum you can download it here:
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/3rWz/V8e4aZYBE
Or Madsurfer stock rom 5.9.26S with Sense home launcher
Nougat rom try Ground Zero roms Tipsy, Validus, Tesla normally it got pretty good battery life with good performance.

Used it last night for 2 1/2 hours sot to 50% so I'm assuming 6 hours. Just feels so much more smooth and solid than linage or RR or aosp based ROMs. Way smoother than eui.
It's miui8 port a little bit tricky to get it to boot properly the 1st time but well worth it I have Xposed installed. Freedom

I usually get 5.1/2 - 6 hours SoT on RR which is pretty decent. You just need to find the right settings for long battery life.
Small EUI could potentially outperform RR in the field of batterylife , but I just can't get used to EUI based ROMS after experiencing Nougat features.

Which version of rr? Nougat or mm?
I'm running 7.1.2 RR 27/05 build.
I changed the resolution to 1920*1080/420 dpi. It's more than enough for me, I see no point of watching 1440p content on a mobile screen.
I use Balanced Xana ATK profile (Settings->Leeco Extras->AKT profiles) and Greenify app to limit background running apps.
I turned off the logger buffer sizes (Developer settings). In Display settings turned on adaptive brightness and reduced power consumption (livedisplay). Also turned on batterysaving mode in location settings.
I would like to highlight that If I play any game (usually Mobile Legends) I get around 4 - 4 and a half SoT with approximately 1 hour gameplay.
I also tried out the newer build (02/06) but AKT profiles didn't work in that one (not noticed any differences in Kernel Adiutor), so I've decided to stay on this build for while. But I read that there are new powersaving features in the latest build, you might wanna check that out.
You can read about some kernel tweaks here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/le-pro3/development/kernel-blackscreen-pro3-aka-zl1-x727-t3594976 (2. post)

Interactive cpu governor, alucard hotplug, and no, i didn't underlock. But if you chose a AKT profile, you don't have to necessarily mess with kernel settings, the profile does that.
Now I'm on 13/6 build, so far it's fine. A bit laggy though, I think the BS 2.3 could cause that. Not noticed any difference in battery life.

Hey guys, recently my father got tired of ****ty MIUI and wanted something better for his Mi 5. Since it's not my phone, I cannot test various ROMs and kernels by clean flashing them.
I just need one ROM that I can switch to on his phone from MIUI.
It needs to be 100% stable (he is sick of bugs), needs to have great calling and bluetooth connection, and great battery life.
Please let me know if such ROM exists for Mi 5, and which one is it
(Do you guys face any issues with bluetooth speakers or taking calls via bluetooth in car?)
You can start with jdcteam's aosp. Has been really solid for me.

I've been using LineageOS with 0 problems so far. But it does take some time to set it up that way. For instance, you need to flash the MIUI camera to improve camera performance, and under display calibration adjust the RGB values to 90% to prevent image retention (a problem on MIUI too).
I can confirm that Bluetooth works fine, calling is clear and battery life is good but not better/worse than MIUI. I haven't tried taking calls over a car's Bluetooth.
You should also check out the Xiaomi.eu weekly MIUI 9 builds as they usually fix what Xiaomi broke in their MIUI builds and are actually supported by Xiaomi.

Nagatobimaru kernel has terrible battery life for me (like 1h30m SOT even though I was initially excited to try it out because it incorporates EAS). I use LOS stock freq kernel, which removes the underclock of the 32GB Mi5 from 1.8GHz to 2.15GHz but is otherwise just the stock LOS kernel. On this kernel I get between 3-4h30m SOT.
AFAIK LOS is the only ROM with display calibration and all the others have no way to fix the severe image retention which is my main reason for sticking with it. If it doesn't bother you or affect your unit then I can highly recommend AEX which seems to be the ROM 90% of the devs are on.

What do you mean by the image retention issue? And what have you calibrated? As far as I understand, you have just tweaked the RGB values of the screen. Can you tell me your values? I think the same thing can be done via Kernel Adiutor if you are on a kernel that supports KCAL. AFAIK, stock LOS kernel doesn't have it but most ROMs and all custom kernels have it.
What about AOSP by JDC team, it appears very stable with EAS?

Does this problem have anything in common to the top edge of phone bleeding? Isnt that hardware's fault?

Yes, it's the same problem - I am unaware whether this is a software or hardware problem, but you can correct it 100% with software. It looks like lightbleed right around the border of the phone and you can see ghosting of previus apps around the corners (especially on a grey background). It's easy to fix in LineageOS, but I've had trouble in every other ROM I tried so far.

Its not ghosting its more like a radiant, something like a glow that increase and decrase...

It looks light an orange tinted lightbleed right around the borders of the display and some ghosting of previous apps are overlayed on the current app (especially visible on grey backgrounds). Check the attached image to see what mean, and this is only about 50% of how bad it can get if you don't adjust for it.
Yes I just tweaked the RGB values to 90% (anything more and you can still notice the effect).
I tried using Kernel Adiutor to fix this problem to no avail, using different ROM and kernel combinations. I never checked if the kernel supports KCAL specifically though.
It's been too long since I used JDC's ROM, but if I remember correctly it was stable and fast but lacked essential features at the time (music playback controls, lockscreen torch, display calibration settings). Their Oreo ROM is far ahead of Lineage 15 in in terms of stability though, not that it's DD ready.

Woah thanks for sharing this man, I didn't know about this, can you please share the screenshot of the settings you have made?
I have the same issue and I can't decide which ROM to flash. MIUI 8 is too laggy, MIUI 9 is faster but all apps crash randomly. I will unlock my phone tomorrow (after the stupid 72 hours waiting period) and I am hoping that this discussion will help us decide. Most probably it will be a choice between Xiaomi.eu or LOS.

As someone who recently used both Xiaomi.eu and LOS14.1 I might be able to clear that up.
Xiaomi.eu MIUI9 build is almost identical to MIUI 8. There are a few minor tweaks to the UI such as the task switcher which is now more immersive and the new icon pack. Settings are now more bundled together and ROM/System info is graphically displayed. Split screen multitasking seems to be the only new feature. I haven't experienced a single app crash, but the system animation speed was set way to fast by default and transition animations show tearing each time you switch apps. In short, it's fast but not smooth.
I switched back to LOS quite quickly. The only feature MIUI has that LOS doesn't is Dual Apps, and since I don't use that the choice was very simple. LOS is much smoother and faster, with minimal features on top of AOSP. I enjoy the additions, it doesn't feel bloated or barebones.
If you are going to use LOS, I recommend doing the following:
-If you have a 32GB Mi5, flash the LOS stock freq kernel
-Set the display calibration as per my previous posts
-Activate touch home button, always on fingerprint unlock
-Install Magisk
-Flash MIUI camera Magisk module + OISprop-Magisk
-Flash iYTBP Magisk module
-Flash unified hosts Adblock Magisk module (make sure to select systemless hosts in Magisk settings)
-Install Google camera HDR+
-Use Nova (paid) or Lawnchair (free) as the launcher
That should get you going and solve most if not all annoyances coming from MIUI. You'd be amazed with the quality of Google Camera HDR+! Just check the attached samples (they are all compressed due to Xda but you'll get the point).

Wow! that was very informative. Thanks a lot man :good: . And yes, I get the point about the photo samples are amazing.
I have the 32 GB version and I already purchased Nova Launcher and use no matter what. I will have to find the addons you mentioned as I have no idea what they do. It's the first time I install a custom ROM on my MI 5. One final question, do you have any thoughts on AOSP Extended?
@xdadevet
Hi, where is OISprop module ?

I can add all the files you need to a dropbox folder and share the link if that would be easier? I find that the Mi5 is super easy to modify, you shouldn't worry too much. I'll add the firmware you need and GAPPS if that would help you transition.
Yes, AEX is a great ROM with many features. Most Devs seem to be on it (going by their discussions). I haven't found a way to fix my LCD issues on AEX yet, which is the main reason for not using it currently.

You need to run the apk after you flashed the magisk module and rebooted your phone to calibrate the OIS.

Can anyone tell me the bugs in this rom?? Plz i really like dot os but last time i installed it.... There were too many bugs.... And plz also tell me weather video call works on native dialer or not...... Thank you
Battery backup
It's an awesome rom. Very smooth. ROM gave me 2.5-3 hours of SOT (From 100%-0%) as I'm a heavy user and was watching FIFA World Cup online. For nominal use you could squeeze upto 4 hours of battery i think.
Two things i missed one the volume panel shortcut in quick settings (my volume buttons have gone bad) two the hardware key customization.
Thanks for the ROM. Keep up dev.
This ROM have the personalization of Android P in the notifications?
