Hi there,
sorry for bothering you with my problem but I really cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I am running a pure stock version of 4.4.4 on my international version of the moto E, with no root and no unlocked bootloader. I am willing to update to the latest 5.1 build but whitout unlocking the bootloader and stuff.
From what I understand the first step to do so in the easiest way possible would be to download the first 5.0.2 soak (22.21.32 341MB) update and put it into the main SD card. From then the phone should detect the update from the settings, but mine isn't.
I have already tried sideloading the update by going to the recovery and choosing update from adb. Also I have developer options enabled.
Thanks for your help.

Well, 1st of all let me tell you, that you are completely going the wrong way.... You DO NOT need to flash 5.0.2.... From what I know, factory images of XT1021 for official Android 5.1 lollipop are available...
Check this LINK
There are three versions, choose the appropriate one. Download it, and use mfastboot to flash the latest FW (Don't worry, because these are signed images and will work on devices with locked bootloader)
If u think that these are quite complicated, just hit the play store, make sure that Motorola Update Services app is updated.... and wait for the OTA.
If you are 100% sure that you have not unlocked the bootloader, then pm me, I will give the instructions to flash the fw.
Cheers

I am sorry, but I think I made a mistake
The official image is not available for your model at the moment. What u can try is wait for the update to be pushed.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

So I have had the THL W3+ (dual core) for months now and I have to admit that it is a great phone. However, I believe that it would run a million times better with Jellybean installed. It comes with ICS and there has been no update released (right?)
So I was wondering if there was any way to get Jellybean on this device. It runs the MTK6577 processor on which Jellybean has been installed on other phone so I don't see why the W3+ hasn't got the update yet.
Thanks in advance!

I guess we have to wait for ThL to release an update, or wait for someone who can help us port jellybean.
I'm a novice but if I happen to successfully port jellybean, I'll post the link

Thank you, that would be great! I wish I could help but I'm a newbie. I just know the technical jargon.
However, I just stumbled on a result on google in which a customer review said that "since the just new jelly bean update" the phone runs much smoother? I don't even know how to check for an update because I don't have the option under Settings > About Phone.

There's no option to check for update in the phone menus.
The update will be posted on their website http://en.thl.com.cn/Download/Index.html
About the review you came across, I've also seen it before.
Being desperate for jellybean update, I even registered on that website in order to contact the person who made that comment.
But I was dissapointed as the name wasn't clickable despite registration.
Right now, I even doubt that comment cos I've searched extensively for jellybean without success.
Maybe the person doesn't know how to check Android version.

Any firmware you suggest? The one that came with my phone had issues with the G-Sensor and the update the official website offers doesn't let me have apps like Viber and Grindr.

The firmware that came with my phone allowed Viber. And it's the same version on the website. You should click on "w3 dual core version" not "w3 upgrade" as that upgrade is meant for the MT6575 single core version only.
I saw a comment on the firmware talking about G sensor. I think it would fix your problem. it says " Oct. 8, 2012 update: 1. Optimize the shooting effect of rear camera; 2. Improve the compatibility of the G-sensor to solve the problems of some gravity sensor failure; "
Right now I'm using a firmware labeled ThL.w3.121113.6577.COM.EN
I got it from a Russian forum where they claimed it was the latest official firmware (contrary to what I saw in the linkhttp://en.thl.com.cn/Download/Index.html I posted earlier)
Before I recommend a firmware, what version are you running currently?

I'm finding it difficult flashing this ROM since I'm not sure which ZIP file to flash. There are no ZIP files, only RARs. And they include unnecessary stuff like USB VCOM DRIVER
Edit:
I think I will keep this frimware (the one I said I got from needrom). I just flashed gapps so App store works great. I'd love it if you could post when the Jelly Bean update comes out. I believe this phone could be great with a little more support. Jelly Bean would make it so much more smooth!

ok, I assumed you knew how to flash using SP Flash Tool.
Anyway this is the link to the firmware http://yadi.sk/d/pSQ23rqr29rai
It can only be flashed using SP Flash tool. not from recovery as you did with your current ROM.
if you don't know how to use the tool, you might need to wait for jellybean update.
But hey... even if they release jellybean won't it be in the same format as the one you just got from their site?
they even bundled it with sp Flash tool.

Can you help me reinstall this phone's recovery without using recovery mode? Is that possible at all? Because at this point recovery mode keeps flashing purple colours like the screen goes really weird and all I can do is just restart the phone back into the OS. And the latest firmware doesn't have google apps such as the play store so I need to flash those, but without recovery working I can't.

That happened to me too when I flashed a recovery I downloaded.
The latest firmware I flashed overwrote the recovery to the default.
I'm pretty sure the official firmware you downloaded will solve the problem cos it's exactly the same version that shipped with my phone (version; Oct. 8, 2012). Viber and play store worked perfectly.
In case you only want the recovery back, here's how:
to flash a recovery using sp Flash tool.
what you need is an image file called recovery.img and a scatter file.
1. Create a new folder. Preferably in a path without special characters (just to be safe). example C:\User\recovery
2. Locate these two files inside the official firmware you downloaded, and extract them into the created folder.
recovery.img and MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt
Switch off your phone and Do not connect phone to PC yet.
3. Run the Flash Tool and click on Scatter-loading and point it to the MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt file
4. Only the RECOVERY option should be ticked by now.
5. Click on download then connect your phone using the USB cable.
It would download the recovery image to your phone and show a green circle as sign of completion.
That's it.
EDIT: Don't forget to backup your data
EDIT 2: Since you want to flash the official firmware, it will automatically repair your recovery.
in that case just skip steps 1-2 and start from step 3 above and when you get to step 4, all the options will be ticked.

I advise everyone to not take any OTAs after the first August patch so you can still be able to root and flash roms. It isn't a problem for me since I wasn't planning on rooting this phone again anyways..

@raremind couldn't root on BL4. It's unfortunate how we can't root on API2, but if the developers are willing to find out a new way to gain root access on API2, then it wouldn't be the end of the world for anyone who wants the latest OTA but still want root.

L is the latest, if you want to flash j right now feel free
There are two Roms by eliminater74 and one by andy_zahng
For any of these choice you do not need LGup, so long as you are previously rooted
Just flash firmware (part one) via TWRP
Then flash any of those three Roms via TWRP
Reboot,
You will have j rooted
But being i tend to recommend a full wipe i would say wait until the latest L is out in a flashable .zip, should be soon

Hi good people of XDA, i'm currently running a samsung j500h with a 6.0.1 update.
I really want to root it. I tried every possible way and followed every instruction on every sites that i went through (including here). But it doesn't seem to work on my phone. So i asked a developer form facebook and he suggested that i try downgrading to lollipop, from there root my phone and install a pre rooted 6.0.1 rom. But i cant do that as well.
Here are the errors that i'm getting:
CF-autoroot,twrp and su update flash: phone cant boot into recovery, it shows the samsung logo but with a black line that ramdomly pops on any part of the screen and slowly making it blur.
Cf auto root on the other hand, makes my phone stuck on the logo. it never boots now matter how long i wait.
Downgrading:
Error on phone says like these: aboot write fail: Fused 2>binary 1 (something like that)
it still boots and still on 6.0.1.
Does someone here has the same problem?

Samsung has indeed become a huge crap. Android is an open source but these dudes always tend to make it a closed source. Really upset with this but we have no choice. Whether u update manually or via kies it will be the same.
And thanks henkate for making this thread. This will be proved useful to many. :good:
I got reply from moderator regarding sticky thread and he told me that sticky thread is not necessary because there are too low discussions on our J5 forum (it's not so popular) and that when our J5 forum will be more "developed"/popular, we could have a sticky thread which would contain all those important threads.
So, this thread will not be on top of this section ( Guides, News & Discussions) when there will be new threads or new posts in other threads.
thank u so much big bro

DO NOT FLASH/INSTALL NEW MARSHMALLOW UPDATES BECAUSE YOU CAN'T DOWNGRADE TO 5.1.1 ANYMORE !!!
DO NOT UPDATE YOUR PHONE ON 5.1.1, NEITHER ON 6.0.1 THROUGH SOFTWARE UPDATE !!!
( If you are on 5.1.1/6.0.1 and you update it from Settings > About phone > Software Update, I think you might end with same problem. )

Unfortunately, i couldn't find any fix/tips about this after a Google search.
I'm not sure, but I think that if Samsung release new 5.1.1 updates, maybe it will have a new bootloader too and maybe then we can downgrade from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1.

Even If u cant downgrade Bootloader, you can always just repack the system boot and recovery from 5.1.1 and flash and TADA you are back on Lollipop

I dont know if its easy like that since other people with other Samsung phone couldnt solve this.
Another guy got same problem with downgrading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j5/help/flashing-twrp-error-samsung-j500h-t3501187 (read at "Downgrading").
PS: Please dont quote the OP. Thank you!
I know that you have asked and been told no but we have got to keep this at the top of this thread.
This is so important for people to know.
What's are best option to keep this at the top ?

It won't flash. Even if it flashes, without the right bootloader ur phone wont boot at all.
Edit:
If i am wrong, u can always suggest a solution. :good:

Agreed. Quite often Samsungs bootloaders are backwards compatible with previous firmware.
Boot.img and system.img should be all that is required to downgrade and possibly NON-HLOS.BIN if there are wifi issues.
Not only that there's a possibility the bootloader doesn't need to be flashed and the MM rom will boot with the lollipop bootloader.
However there are no guarantees either way.

Well, someone of the guys which can't downgrade anymore should try this and report.
EDIT:
@Proxy101 : Can you try this to downgrade to 5.1.1 and report if it works?

It's not fake. The two users who reported has J500H. The latest firmware changelist of J500H is not same as J500FN one (also I don't see a firmware with "J" at FN). Maybe the new update didn't come on J500FN yet.
Whether you believe it or not, it's up to you. Keep updating if you want, but then don't complain here that you can't downgrade.
You've been warned about this.
Thread cleaned up of all Off Topic Posts.
Also bump again and again is really not needed. Please don't do that again.
Can we please stay on topic?
Thank for this useful thread. Stay at cm12.1 @nick_verse after read this thread

Hello,
I have the following phone:
Moto Z
XT1650-03
RETEU
Android 6.0.1 MPL24.246-45
When I got the phone I only unlocked the bootloader en flashed TWRP recovery.
Now the Android 7 OTA update is released. I got the popup for de OTA update but it wasn't able to install the update because of TWRP Recovery.
After that I flashed the recovery with a stock recovery from the stock Android 6.0.1 MPL24.246-17 ROM, found in a Moto Z official/stock ROM forum here on XDA. After that I downloaded the OTA update again on my Moto Z, it starts with installing the update, then it restarts in recovery, it seems work fine when I see the stock recovery screen with installing the update, but after a few minutes I get an "Error!" with the "Android man with open belly" symbol. Luckily the phone stil boots and is working fine.
What's going wrong with the OTA update? Mismatch between the rom (MPL24.246-45) and recovery (MPL24.246-17) version?
My goal is to get stock Android 7 on my Moto Z. Who can tell me what's the best step for me to achieve this? Should I try another recovery to get the OTA update working?
Thank you!
Same happened to me when i tried updating the new 540mb update over Nougat. I think it happened because of the kernel (disabling force encryption), not sure :/

Ok, thank you for your answer. But I did not do anything with encryption... And how did you solve this, are you able to install that update now?
I gave my phone to the service center today and told them that it happened after the OTA update. I have my fingers crossed that they don't find out about the unlocked bootloader before fixing it.

Possible. Flash stock recovery from Rogers firmware which is a -45 subrelease.
Anyway I wouldn't upgrade by OTA...

Do you mean the Rogers firmware from this forum?

Ok, I already flashed de stock .45 Recovery from Rogers.
My plan is the following:
- Reset device to factory defaults
- Download the OTA update to the device, just how it's meant to be
- See if it wil update successfully now
Or what can you recommend me to get to fully stock Nougat? This one:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/development/android-nougat-moto-z-versions-t3506342
Or wait and stay on Android 6.0.1 till there is more information/ROM's/updates about this device? I know something about flashing/ROM's (before I had a OnePlus One with Cyanogen) but not as much as you guys do and I don't want to brick my device
