Storage Size Discussion - Nexus 6P General

I'm confused as to why anyone would need more than 32gb.... What do you use all that storage for?
All of my data (basically) is in the cloud (Google music, Google photos, etc...).
Titanium backup, ROMs, lots of apps, etc... Should still all fit on 32gb, no?
I do get why iPhones need all that storage....

Cloud is great but what if u get stuck in a basement. Rare but happens. No wifi or service and bored. Lol. 64gb is alot for entertainment. 32gb still ok. A few movies.

Haha. Yea. I have 1-2 movies. Everything else is cloud/movie services. Like vudu, netflix. And plex from my home network.

I've got 6gb for spotify and another 10gb for movies and sites. I'm not going to stream all that and sometimes you need to keep your toddler quiet and happy.

128 is plenty enough for me

32GB Nexus 6 right now... I currently only have a couple games on it. But with my new 64GB Nexus 6P Ill be able to download all my music and several movies and TV shows without worrying about using data. For me its more convenience, I could make due with 32GB but 64GB gives me more leg room.

I went for the 128gb as there wasn't much difference in price over the 64gb.
I won't use the space intially, as I tend to stream most of my media content, whether it's netflix, spotify, amazon video etc. But I do like having local content, plus apps, 4k video etc take more and more storage and it's only going to get bigger.
I'd always rather have more than needed rather than not enough. I'd hate to buy the 32gb and for whatever reason further down the line realise that I don't have enough space and start having to micro manage storage.

For $50 less before tax than my 64gb Nexus was last year I think it's a steal. I wasn't originally going to buy jt because I didn't know the price but for $650 is begging people to buy it.

ive started listening to a lot of music in FLAC, and one of my albums is 240MB alone, so I've gotten used to the larger storage options

- Games
- FHD/4K recordings
- Random files
- Books/comics
- Music
Honestly the answer should be obvious, since even 64GB can be quite easy to fill. I personally don't care for cloud services, I keep "non-documents" stored locally. When you rely and constantly sync/stream with those services you just add another source for battery drain, which can be avoided altogether by storing frequently accessed files, music, vids, etc. on the device.

Games, movies and music. Not everyone has a large or unlimited data plan, and some people regularly have to travel oversea to work. A whole season of 1080p Game of Thrones will easily fill up 32GB of memory.

The way I see it, Android O/S isn't getting any smaller. Neither are apps. Since I actually plan to keep this one awhile, I opted for the largest size. Plus, since I'm on Fi, every little bit of data savings helps, so I tend to front-load most of my Google Play Music stations and download movies while on wi-fi, storing them for offline use. It all adds up.
Having said that... I could probably have lived with 32, and certainly 64. But eh... it wasn't a whole lot more expensive, so I figured why not?

Can you honestly tell the difference between lossless or 320? I certainly cannot warrant the exponential increase in memory for it.

Exactly! With 128gb, I can finally end the compromise between lossless sound quality and how much music I can keep on me. Plus, capturing 4k video isn't small either. Toss in a few movies, nandroid backups, and all the other misc stuff, and I can fill 64gb in a hurry!

Yes. Clear difference between the two. The better your headphones, the more of a difference it makes as well. Example: http://amzn.com/B00LXBC7W4

I think 32g is good enough, if we manage the data well, there is no reason to store so many video on a tiny phone to watch, right?

I barely used half of my 64gb Nexus. I've been using a lot more cloud services and I used to fill storage but now not so much. 128 is the same price as my 64 was last year. Ultimately the 128GB is likely overkill but it will sell for more when the time comes.

[Q] Do you find 16GB enough?

Since Samsung is only releasing a 16GB version of the tablet here in Canada, there's no option for 32gb unless ordering from the US. After base o/s install, there is roughly 12GB free. Has anyone bought the 16GB and found it to too limiting? 12GB is probably plenty of room for quite a few app installs, but adding videos would kill it real quick. The omission of an sd card slot is really disappointing, but it is what it is. Buying an android tablet unfortunately seems to be more about making compromise than anything.
Rob
So far 16GB's seems to be more than enough for me. It really depends on how you set your self up. Here's a couple of things I've done to help give me a bit more usable room on my Tab.
1. Use online storage like Dropbox and Box.net and their android apps. With Dropbox you can get 2GB's free and if you get other people to sign up from a link you email them you can get more free storage. I got most of my family and a few friends to sign up this way, I'm up to 5GB's of free online storage with Dropbox alone. Box.net you can get another 5GB's of free online storage for free just for signing up. I use both of these to store all of my wallpapers, icons pictures and such. Saves a ton of room and makes everything available to me no matter where I am. You can use these sites from your Tab or your phone by using their apps or any laptop or desktop by going to their sites.
2. If you plan on using your Tab for work things like word docks, spreadsheets and PDF's... Use Google Docs, I've been using Google Docs for the last few years now and haven't even come close to using up the space they give you for free. I'm a chef and use it to keep all of my recipes, cost control documents... Again for the same reasons I stated above. I've also started using EverNote over the last year and now that I have my Tab I find myself using it even more. Being a chef I'm very much into keeping a running record of the food and dishes I make. With EverNote I can snap a picture with my eVo of a special or new dish and make a few key quick notes, then on the train ride home at the end of the day I can edit that note on my Tab to make it more detailed.
3. For your music you can use any number of online music storage sites. I use Googles Music Beta, again for the reasons i've stated before. I can get to everything in my collection from anywhere, on my phone, my Tab and any computer anywhere.
Those 3 things alone save a ton of space on my Tab as well as my eVo and make it very easy for me to access all of my stuff from anywhere.
It should leave you with more than enough space on your Tab for any number of apps. As for movies, just make sure that they are formated right. And how many times can you watch the same movie over again, once you've watched vid or movie just either delete it or one it to your computer.
I have over 50 apps installed on my Tab, all of the StarWars movies, and I mean all of them 1 through 6 and some other movie with Mat Damon in it. And I still have over 7GB's free memory.

16GBs isn't enough for me. Typically most one hour 720P HD video clips will take up anywhere from 1.5 to 1.9GBs and that leaves me little room for music. Despite using spotify, dropbox, pandora, and netflix i still can't keep enough media to last me for a trip longer than 5 hours

um ok. I guess you've never been on a long road trip or train ride. There is only so many times you can watch the same movie/video over again.
16GB is definitely enough for what most people use tablet for. But it's true that there are times where i do store HD movies in the tab and i wish i could store more HOWEVER it's definitely not enough to justify getting 32gb for $100 more
This has been discussed to some extend here: Is 16GB enough?
For me it's more than enough. With all the cloud space everywhere I don't need more. I have with me the stuff I really need/want and everything else is available only via an internet connection.
That might not be an option for someone else. That person needs to wait for/get a 32/64 GB model. I'm perfectly happy with the 16 GB.

That's what the USB adapter and two USB thumb drives are for.
64GB extra instead of 16GB extra for $100 extra.
with apps like google music and netflix i have yet to run out of space on my 16gb.
I bought the 16GB version today. I almost mail ordered a 32gb from the US, but then I thought if I have hardware issues I might be out of luck. I plan to get the USB adapter which I can only find on ebay right now.

[Q] Why 64GB?

It's the question around my head stopping me to click on the pre-order button.
I have a N1 and though struggling with the internal memory, can't see having more than maybe 1GB or 2 in apps. I get that with this i would install a lot more, but what, another 2 GB? Maybe even 4?. Maybe 4 more in Music. I guess i would put there some films or series to watch. Maybe add what... 4GB? 8? I have a spare 16GB SD card (for use with the dock, which would probably get the films or series) and probably will get a 16 or 32 microSD for the tablet itself. That would be, at least, 64Gb. If i get the 64Gb version, it would mean at least 96GB
Why getting then the 64GB? I'm serious, i would really like to know the reasons people are behind the 64gb version. It's not that i believe it's not necessary, it's that I'm probably missing something in the equation and i don't want to miss anything so i can make the right choice before regretting not buying the right one.
Because.... People can afford it?

HD videos can get pretty dang big...10+ GB for 1080p (assuming bluray rip).
simple fact is HD video takes a lot of space. you put a few movies on at full res on the tablet, you'll soon see 64GB evaporate.
I have 32gb on my phone and am under constant pressure to swap things around because I don't have enough space.
I ordered the 64GB. Because I don't want any limitations and have to "worry" about if I have enough space.
And now when we have hardware that can handle high quality video 720p/1080p why don't use it. When you have gone HD you never want to go back to low resolution videos.
All movies/series I watch are 720p mkv.
4-7GB is one movie.
1-1.5GB is on serie episode
0.5-1GB is one game, and those will gets bigger now when they can be more advanced.
even apps will get bigger when they gets more advance.
So fast you will reached the 32GB mark.

All depends on your usage.
I keep around 20 gigs worth of music on my phone plus constantly swap out TV shows.
I got the 64gb version coming AND a 64gb microSD for it as well... I could easily see myself using the 64gb internal to fill up with pics and videos from the (from what it sounds like) great camera on the thing and have the microSD holding lots of videos, movies, ROMS etc... hell im lookin forward to the 2 terabyte microSD's!!
Because.........why not?
So I can laugh and look down from my mountain top upon all the 32GB peons!!!!
for $100, why not?
32GB Micro SD is about 60-70$ right now, 220$ for a 64GB. I want AT LEAST 64GB right now so I can dump all my music on it and use it instead of killing my data plan with Google Music. I'll end up getting a micro SD for it (64GB when they're a little more affordable anyways) so I can maximize the storage space on this thing. Games are huge, videos are huge. This thing takes pictures and video... why the hell not. What's 100$? You'll be paying more for the dock, but not for double the storage space? I think it's worth it.
64GB of local space is getting bigger and bigger the later we go into the future...
Look at Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Google Music, Pandora, etc. and you will see a lot of that space is now useless.
But who cares? What if I want to go on a long road trip and I pack several Blu-rays on board or several giant games on? Maybe. Well, my 16GB TF101 still has about 10GB on it..... My 16GB iPhone 4 still has about 4GB on it... My 2.5TB HDD still has about 2TB left on it....
If you have $100 extra dollars to go down on this beatiful tab, go for it!
That have been a lot of answers for such a short time, thanks
I feel i'm convinced to go with the 64GB version, didn't know some games were so huge (with a N1 it's difficult to play anything not named angry birds ), and didn't remember the huge size of the HD files (sometimes i forget that because of the 2TB disk at the main pc, which never seem to end ). The main reason being, of course, laughing and looking down from the mountain to the 32GB peons
Now, time to wait, at least for christmas, for amazon.de to send it
HD videos...each clip can easily take gigs
Just because YOU use your devices a certain way does not mean everybody else should do the same as well. Some people have way more than 64gig of music. Some people have gigs of movies (I know I do). It's nice to copy a few 4gig+ movies over and not worry about left over space when I need the space later.
I have friends like this.. they say "16gb is fine for me, its all I need, why do you need a 64gb".. /facepalm
For many people, the 32GB model (supplemented by micro SD) is probably enough. But many is not all. Especially while travelling I do need A LOT more storage - I'd rather avoid having to use external storage or an SD card in the keyboard dock unless it's just for transferring photos from for example my digital camera. As a lot of commentators have mentioned, it's once you get into media storage especially video (but also to some extent music, photos, E-books, magazines/comics/PDFs and the like) that the 64GB model becomes advantageous. Basically, there is a lot of competing media requirements these days and I can only see that increasing. Cloud storage is not really an answer, as it's a solution for some of the issues but not others.

That's exactly why i asked it seriously, not in a "i don't need it, why you do?" fashion, but in a "i don't know if i would need it, tell me why you do and i will see if i do"
It's my first tablet, and my other android device is a nexus one with just ~ 180MB for apps + storage and microSD (4gb atm). That's why i prefer asking than just deciding on my own, as i already said, i might miss something and that's what i don't want And i asked it publicly because i might not be the only one with the doubt
Well, I deleted all my music from Transformer because of free space problem. 32GB would also be too little. 64GB + some SD/mSD would be OK though.

Why are people upset over the sd card?

Look folks I own the latest HTC phone built with an sd card. The evo lte. Having an sd card really isnt that big of a deal. The onboard sd card is much faster and i have a class 10 sandisk 32. Nothing is faster than that but onboard storage. Basically i use root explorer alot and any files not being used or accessed at that time you keep on the card anything current or needed to be flashed you keep onboard. Its almost like you have 2 sd cards not one. Now obviously the dna will not have this but a simple flash drive and adapter is the exact same thing! The only difference would be you cant run the files off the flash drive without transfering them but im not sure why you would run them off an external anyway if you had them? Onboard memory is faster anyhow? I just dont see why the fuss? Yall are mad about nothing lol. Flash drives cost about 20% more than a sd card. Relax its not a big deal. Lol

16GB isn't future proof for apps (mostly games). I wouldn't want to plug in a flash drive to play some games - that would be incredibly annoying. Other than that, I don't see it as a big deal. I also never listen to music while out though (besides car radio). I currently only use 3GB of space on my Incredible, but it also just can't handle any real games lol.

Some are over 2GB already, HD ones that inevitably come out soon will be 3-4GB. Well, the free roaming ones anyway - Angry Birds never will be. That means if only storing apps you could only have 3-4 games before running out of space. It's only 11GB free after formatting and the Jellybean/Sense etc.
I dont game on phones and never will. just got a 32gb nexus 7 so when my nephews come over they can play all the .99 cents games I bought last year. Stay away from my phone lol. I game but true joy is on big screen, xbox, pc, ps3, I really could care less about gaming on 5inch or 7inch screen where I get tired of controls after 5 mins.

I'm sure that not only 16GBs (11GBs usable), 8GBs (yep, 3GB usable only) storage is enough for many people who only surf webs, facebook, sometimes take some photos, listen to music a little bit and have some small apps. I think at least 50-70% smartphone owners use their device this way.
However, there are still a lot of people needing bigger storage for many purposes, and I dont know what you wanna ask. For you it's enough, and for others it's not, that is personal opinion and purpose.
Something similar that I saw in other fanboys' topics, such as when people blamed on iPhone about it's storage, close OS, small screen or just no bluetooth sharing, and many shew a ton of evidences that it's enough. The same thing with Samsung's plastic and Motorola's bootloader.
I personally don't use my phone for games, music or movies. I use it for email, calls, texts and web-browsing (as well as for certain productivity apps). However, I can certainly see how someone looking to use their phone as an all-in-one multimedia device would not be satisfied with 16gb.
In the end, like everything else in the world, it really is just subjective and based on personal use requirements which is why there is no reason for people to bash a device for so-and-so reason or for people to bash the people doing so because, at the end of the day, there's always a group out there that will find the specs of any piece of technology adequate for their needs.

There's no way I'll ever come close to the limit listening to streaming music. To take up 4GB of data I'd have to listen to 128 Kbps streaming constantly for 69 hours. Some people might have issue with that but I know I won't. Plus I tend to use the spotify feature to download my favorite playlists to the device so it's rarely streaming anyways. Automatic sync and everything. It's a wonderful setup for music for only $10/mo.
thank you

Aren't the data plans 2gb/$30 and 5gb/$50 a month? There is a big difference between streaming up to 2gb vs. 4gb.
Simple. They need access to more than 13gb of stuff. Is it really beyond your comprehension that there are people in the world that need this? I think using a flash drive with my phone is really cool but its a bit ridiculous to think it could replace the function of an SD card. You may as well ask why anyone would want more that 8gb of data on a phone or 4gb of data.
Or better yet why do you think you need more than 1gb of storage on your phone. I only use my phone for email and the internet so I can't understand why anyone in the world would need more than a gigabyte, I mean my email cache is like less than 100mb and the internet is LITERALLY on the internet so I don't need ANY storage for that. Even if i downloaded an app, that's like what, a few more mbs? What could anyone possible have on their phone that would exceed 1gb.
Your experience ≠ everyone else.

Not really to me. I track my usage and over the past six months on my Sprint EVO 4G I've averaged ~415MB per month total. That includes my spotify usage, internet, maps, searches, occasional youtube, etc. Of course I see my usage going up somewhat when I get on LTE, but not by tenfold. My original point was that the need to carry around 50GB of music is nullified (at least for me) by using something like Spotify.
My remaining question to those who insist on carrying that much music, why are you only limiting yourself to that much? I mean, I have 200GB+ on a storage drive at home. You can't carry all that around so what's the difference between 50 and 200?
I could care less about not having an SD card, but I don't play games or store music so much less memory is needed for my use. I can completely understand those who game a lot and store music and vids needing one. My biggest concern would be getting it rooted and being able to access the hotspot hacked of course. When this can be done ill be very tempted to pick one up.

Was 32, 64 of 12gb enough for you?

Hey guys.
I had a Note 4 and decided to give it to my sister and now wanting the S6 Edge. I had a 32gb note with a 64Gb card with about 38GB of music.
And Im now leaning towarda the 64gb model. Want to know peoples experience with their chosen storage. What did you choose and was it enough? Did you wish you went a step higher?
With the amount of data you had earlier, it's obvious that you need at least 64GB device. Don't forget that the S6 does not have expandable storage.
I had an LG G3 32GB with a 64GB card. It was a overkill for me, using less than 20GB of data on the card and a few more on the device. As for internal storage, for a 64GB unit, only about 55GB is available to you, so you gotta base your usage on that.

TBH I could survive with 32GB. But I got the 64GB. I got the Nexus6 in 64 for that reason. Well because I could!
My iphones are 128GB as well. Apple keeping 16 instead of 32 for the entry device is silly. Many will be frustrated when their (nearly full) devices cannot be updated to later iOS versions!
I probably would have got the 128GB S6 if it were available.
But I won't lose sleep over not having it.
OTG works fine for bulk transfers.
Air droid on our 5GHz AC network is plenty fast even for copying full roms and is it ever convenient!
I went for a 64gb. My old phone had 32gb and I was forever deleting stuff off it, I would have liked the 128 more but yeah at least I can now have a few games and more music.

32gb is enough for me, i actually store music on google music , you can upload your music to it using google music manager on PC , can have 50,000 and single file can be 300mb , of course you need data as it will stream, as im on unlimited don't have any issues and plays instantly , and when moving to another device can just log in its so quick, how things have progressed, i really dont have any use for sd cards now !:good:
I've only got a few albums (3 or 4) on my phone at the moment. I only get 1.5gb data so it's not enough to stream off the net, I would use it up to quickly. I have 15 games on here, some I'm only trying and deleting. I Still have 32gb free

I got the 64. I could possibly have settled for the 32gb, but i prefer not having to worry about it, and be able to install a ton of different games that i probably wont play. The problem with 32 is that it becomes 21 after the system, and in my case 10gb less after you synchronize spotify, leaving me with 11gb for games/apps/roms/backups etc.
So 64 is a nice middle point, i feel like it's only in a few unique cases that 128 would be necessary.
I also came from a 32gb note with a 64gb sd card.

When switching from my Note 4 to my S6 edge and trying to determine the capacity I needed, I just looked at the total combined storage of what I was currently using on my Note 4. I understood that some of those files were OS related files.
I didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of deleting files just to switch devices and I was close to the 64GB threshold, so I went with the 128GB. I'm glad I did.
I'm a heavy Cloud user, all my music is on Google, pictures are stored on MS OneDrive, etc. I had a 16GB iPhone 6+ and wasn't too limited. Picked up the 64gb just because it wasn't too much more and gave me plenty of space.

I don't mind using Google or Dropbox, but Microsoft OneDrive has the absolute worst upload rate of any online storage out there.
I tried uploading pictures to OneDrive several times and the upload speeds were painfully slow. After a quick Google search I realized it was a Microsoft issue that they refuse to fix. Microsoft keeps somewhat acknowledging it as an issue and releasing "how to" instructions tips in order to fool people into thinking they are helping, but they're not addressing the hardware issues related to the problem.
So much for that 2 years/100GB of space for free through OneDrive because I consider it pretty worthless.

everyone wants that. But its crazy expensive. Dont want to pay too much, cause I know a Note 5 is right around the corner.

That's pretty much the story of my life. Something is always right around the corner. Truth told, I'll probably buy the Note 5, but there's no guarantees. I'm pretty happy with the size of the S6 edge.
The other thing I considered when pondering space was the fact that things start running slower when you start running closer to capacity. I like to leave plenty of overhead for the sake of keeping it nice and smooth.

Sorry it isn't working for you, OneDrive has been gangbusters for me. I uploaded about half a gig and it didn't take that long at all. Sitting happily with my 1.12TB of storage and not planning on switching back any time soon.
16 would have been enough for me. I stream most things

I opted for the 64GB version, only because the 128GB one wasn't available here (Samsung decided not to release that model here)! I keep some of my work docs on my device and occasionally need to access them when I have zero signal so cloud storage isn't an option for me unless it's personal pics or music or other unimportant stuff. If I need extra storage on top of the 64GB I'll just get me an OTG flash drive, but so far I still have about 35GB free so I should be ok!

I have 26 gig of music, 104 apps, 13 gigs remaining on my 64. This is adequate for my needs, I've been on android for the start and have a consistent app package with the occasional new app coming on and an old app riding off into the sunset. You likely either know exactly how much you are using and whether that is on the move or not, if in doubt, get more. But then I'm a bit of a slut.
128GB. Version you can never have too much space. I use my phone every day and couldn't live with out it any more. When I'm that dependant on it why wouldn't I get the largest capacity?
Decided to take the 128gb myself. Didnt want to deal with storage problems...but crazzzy expensive here in europe.
64GB is plenty. Trying to sell the 128GB at a decent price will be harder once the Note 5 comes out as well, so went with the middle option.

[Q] S6 Edge: 64GB or 128GB?

I need help deciding whether to go for 64GB or 128GB. This will be my primary and secondary and everything. I don't carry two smartphones like most. Anyway, I usually use my phone for basic stuff like email, apps, internet, light gaming. Will be using a launcher as well such as Nova and installing a few icon packs and stuff. I will not be having any music or movies on it. I don't take photos/videos a lot. I hope this is enough. So, which will serve me well, 64GB or 128GB?
I'm guessing the majority have the 64GB model, anyone regret not getting the larger storage?
No help??
Never mind. Ordered the 64GB. Since I currently use an iPhone 64GB and have only used 18GB.
Well, one should really future proof if you can. I just had this debate with a friend and it does depend how long you meant to keep the device and what you do with it. If you add a couple tens of gigs of music, with flac taking up more space, more than a few books and more than a few movies (even mp4s) for those long grips, it can easily reach up to 80+gb already in my case. IMO, nothing is worse than having to delete or move stuff off the device because of space constraints.
BTW, I presume that a 128gb device will have a higher resale value than a 64gb to partially if not fully offset the $100 diff.
I have 32GB and find it more than enough. I stream all my music (Spotify) and stream all my video (Hulu, Amazon, Youtube). I take a lot of pictures, but I also use one drive backup so I can erase them when the phone gets too full. I've had the phone for over a month and I still haven't yet needed to erase any photos or videos.

I'm not like you. I don't put content like music, movies, books, etc. on my phone. And I never sell any of my stuff. Even the ones I don't use anymore. But IMO, I think 64GB will have a higher resale value since it has always been the most popular storage option for every device.

Are you like, 5? You ask a question but don't like the answers? Obviously, we're all different in our requirements. If you know you don't need any content, why bother asking about the storage sizes? An more appropriate response would be, "thanks for the reply but I think I'll be ok with ..... since I won't be ....". That's an affirmative, you are not like me, genius.

I have stated my usage in my original post for a reason. It helps to determine what storage option is best for me. I already said that I don't store music or movies but you posted saying the larger storage option is better because music, movies, and books take a lot of space.
