Is root possible on Kindle Fire OS 4.5.1 - 7 HDX? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I am tired of the Fire OS. In fact, I have barely used my Kindle Fire that was an XMas gift last year because Amazon's take on the Android OS just is so painful. I'm coming from CM11s and 12.1 on my OnePlus One and would like to get this onto the device if possible.
I'm no stranger to rooting, but it seems all the methods that I have tried (towelroot and KingRoot v4.50.902) are failing.
The OS is prompting me to update to 4.5.3 (I believe) and I'm hessitant to do. Does 4.5.1 not have the 'root vulnerability'? Is there a way to root this Kindle on the Fire OS 4.5.1 so that I can finally use and enjoy this great hardware?
Thank you all and I do apologize if this is old/repost. I have tried to exhaust the options before creating a new thread.
EDIT: Just to have this information in here, the Kindle 'Device Options' is reporting Kindle Fire HDX (3rd Generation) with a serial number that starts with D073...

Softbricked my Kindle Fire HDX 7; please help me rescuing it.

Dear XDA Developers community,
I have big problems with my Kindle Fire HDX 7 THOR (unmodified Fire OS 13.3.2.8) which I can't solve on my own. So I please ask the community to assist me solving the problems.
Here the details:
I just tried the tutorial "HOW TO UPDATE KINDLE FIRE HDX TO ANDROID 7.1 (Nougat)" (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71101994&postcount=638) with my Kindle Fire HDX 7 THOR (unmodified Fire OS 13.3.2.8) which I rooted with towelroot v3 (works good with SuperSu). It all worked perfectly till point 7/8. I also allowed the SuperSu prompt. But after running the file "unlock.bat" (as Admin) my Kindle shut down but didn't boot correctly afterwards (it only shows a "dark sceen with background lighting"). On Windows 7 my device doesn't appear when I try to address it with the command "adb devices". But I can still see it in Windows Device Manager as "Android Phone" with "Android ADB Interface".
I am thankful for any help.
Best Regards

Fire HDX 8.9 (4th Gen/2014) saturn brick after wrong update procedure

Hello,
I have a Fire HDX 8.9 (4th Gen/2014) saturn with Fire OS 4.2
I was probably a bit premature when I rooted my tablet and then wanted to update with a custom rom. I did the following steps:
Rootet the tablet with Kingroot successfully
Installed the ADB driver on my Windows 10
enabled "USB Debugging Mode" on the tablet
downloaded the "platform-tools"
downloaded "unlock.zip" (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...r-firmware-t3463982/post70881555#post70881555)
successfully run "get_code.bat"
downloaded aboot and twrp for Thor (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2twXJIOgv-URzJDQkczNzRLaHM)
uplodaded it on my sdcard and run the following commands
Code:
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp_cubed.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
dd if=/sdcard/aboot_vuln.mbn of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
run "unlock.bat" -> the tablet was black and never restarted.
I tried it to reboot by holding power (and volume +) button for more than 45seconds. Without any success. I have already bought a "fastboot cable" which will be delivered in 1-2 days.
Can someone please tell me what I did wrong and how I can rescue my tablet? Thank you very much!
Best Regards

Your device is toast. 4th gen HDX devices can not be bootloader unlocked. Flashing a 3rd gen aboot will (did) yield a hard brick. Sorry for your loss.

You're right. I received the fastboot cable today. But the device is not starting anymore.. damn ****..
If you have a look at this ebay offer, there is a 4th generation tablet with an unlocked bootlader?!

4th gen HDX devices can not be unlocked; likely a 3rd gen.
As a data point -- given that this thread is timely with my recent (and successful) root, unlock, and install of TWRP, LineageOS, and GAPPS on my Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 3rd generation "apollo" -- I followed this list of steps:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70882744&postcount=551
I too am wondering about the "saturn" version of the Fire HDX.

Saturn is a 4th gen device; no bootloader unlock or custom ROM. FireOS builds below 5.3.2.1 can be rooted.
is there any way to recover 4th gen 8.9 if it still flashes amazon on screen when powered on? already tried holding power button for 60 seconds but just goes black after amazon..it shows up as qhsusb_bulk when connected to pc

Fire HDX 7 boot stuck reduex

OK, first up I readily admit to not knowing anything regarding Android devices. Given this fact I can't tell if any of the solutions posted will fix my problem and I further lack knowledge on root, twrp, etc. I do know my Kindle Fire HDX 7 won't boot beyond the swirling colored dots (after the grey kindle fire screen)!
Here's what I got:
Kindle Fire HDX 7
Processor Qualcomm MSM8974
Android Version 4.4.4
Kernal Version 3.4.0-perf.gbfcccle
[email protected]#1
Sat Dec 13 8:27:32 UTC 2014
Build# HDX Nexus ROM
[email protected]
Device is recognized on PC as: MTP USB Device Properties, Kindle Fire HDX 7, Firmware 1.0 when connected with USB cable.
I have tried the "hold the on/off button for a long time" and "hold the on/off and volume + button" to no avail. If there is a solution I am the one that will require step by step instructions so I don't kill the device for good!
At the risk of posting an "asked and answered 10k times" question, any help to recover would be greatly appreciated.
Man thanks in advance.
Do you have signal app? want to PM me your contact info? I might be able to help you out i just went thru this same fiasco myself a few days ago. Is yours a Kindle Fire HDX 7 or an HD 7? Do you have the codename? Apollo, Thor, Saturn or w/e?
edit: nvm you have a Thor, and i can definitely help you out, but it's likely going to be need to help you out in "real time" via a voice call or IRC chat or some such, since this can get very long and drawn out trying to troubleshoot via forums
Also do you have a Linux live disc you can use to boot into?
