Although new to 'Rooting' I have been reading extensively...I have been attempting to root my thunderbolt using the latest Thunderbolt-Tool-v1.1-BETA.zip...Each time I start the process, I completed the back up, but then I get an error message saying that the download was bad and it needs to re download the files...Here nothing happens...Can the upgraded thunderbolt be rooted? If so, where can I get help?..

First step would be to go here and register so that you can unlock your bootloader. (Quick easy step-by-step instructions)
Next step would be to install the necessary drivers for adb/fastboot. (to my knowledge this cannot be done on Win 8 64-bit possibly 32-bit either; specifically fastboot) For necessary items check the above mentioned site when looking at the instructions they are listed on the right. Or if running Ubuntu
Code:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
Now follow the step-by-step instructions to unlock the bootloader.
Then get this tool and follow the instructions (Windows only) to gain root. If running Ubuntu I'm not entirely sure how to get root as I'm lucky enough to have 2 laptops 1 running Ubuntu (easier bootloader unlocking) and 1 running Windows 8 64-bit and it took TONS of work to get it done considering Win 8 64 won't let me install fastboot drivers.
Hope that was helpful, and I hope even more that you're not running Win 8 64-bit lol
You'll also find instructions here as well as a crap ton more ROMs than available here on XDA

Thanks for the response...Prior to submitting my post I signed up at HTC Dev and downloaded the Apps...When I attempted to install 'Eclipse' I received an error message: JRE must be available to run Eclipse. I have JRE installed already. I actually downloaded it again just to be sure...
Getting Closer
I am making progress. I have gained SuperUser status but am now stuck. I cannot seem to locate the file 'Set Main Version Low'...This file needs to be flashed but it does not appear although I can find it in my downloads and in the Android folder I created...

Thanks
I never got around to thanking you guys for the help you sent my way...I am still learning but I believe my 'grey matter' between the ears might need an update...LOL: :highfive:
Okay so I bought this HTC Amaze the other day and needless to say, I love it.
The only bad thing about it is that it's on 2.3.4 cause it's the unbranded, Asian version. (My english is even set to bloody Malaysian)
Anywho, I read that there's actually an OTA for it that gives 4.0
YAY But that's for tmobile.
Coming from a Motorola Defy+ to HTC isn't exactly a smooth transition, cause in Motorola they couldn't unlock the bootloader and the original stock files were SBF's which were flashed by RSD lite. Also rooting is much easier, in my opinion.
So, I want to boot ICS on this, but not the original tmobile OTA, more like CM9, if possible? I saw there's a few roms I could use.
I tried doing some work on this phone but got confused.
I unlocked the bootloader, and I'm honestly not sure what to do next. Do I need to do S-OFF? I don't even know what that is, let alone how to do it.
Plus I read that it's only available for Ubuntu users?
.............................
Can someone please guide me in the right direction?
If your bootloader is unlocked and you have a custom recovery you should be able to flash a custom ROM like CM. In order to flash a ROM that is specific to another carrier I believe you have to be s-off and super cid
Okay so I installed 4EXT and rooted the device permanently. I tried doing a CM10.1 rom and gapps...... It loaded, but it wont go past the welcome screen where you select the language.
Gonna try to re-wipe and flash again. If not, I made a backup of 2.3.4.
Make sure you check the md5 sums before installation
Okay this is bad, the md5sums don't match and now I'm stuck at white background with htc logo on it all the time.
I can boot into bootloader then recovery. I can also flash roms but they don't work. I tried multiple, always doing a full format except sd card.
I tried flashing stock kernel, not working.
I tried using hasoon's aio to flash original RUU but device undetected.
IDK What to do
Redownload a ROM and make sure the md5 sums match then flash the ROM it you can restore a nandroid if you made one. If the md5 sums don't match that is why you are having issues. It's good you can boot into recovery.
I managed to get it to work on stock rom again, thanks to another forum thread.
I'm a bit scared to try doing it again, seeing that I have windows 8 and the programs don't work on it.
Maybe when I dual boot either ubuntu or windows7 I'll try it again.
Having a nandroid backup and checking the md5 sums before flashing should prevent most issues from happening. I'm running a dual boot windows 8/Ubuntu PC if that means anything to you
It means everything to me!!!!
Can you explain to me how you did it?
I have to burn the image on a cd still, but I tried to dual boot windows 7 and 8 but 7 couldn't be installed on a gpt partition.
I do have an external hard drive, but that's mainly for backing up my data, so I don't want to use that.
Here's what I was doing, I created a partition of 100gbs using the preloaded software on windows, formatted and put it as a letter and it worked well as a partition on windows 8 itself. But when I booted the windows 7 cd, it wouldn't install on it.

I installed Ubuntu with the windows installer if I remember correctly. It's been awhile since I did it so I don't remember exactly how I did it and I don't remember having any issues doing it. My laptop originally came with Windows 7 and I upgraded it to Windows 8 and installed Ubuntu sometime after upgrading to Windows 8. My older hardware may be the reason why it worked now that I'm looking over this stuff again. I'm pretty sure I downloaded the "Install Ubuntu with the Windows installer" to install it. Hopefully that helps.

Yeah, having the hardware from win7 would have definitely had something to do with the compatibility of Ubuntu on the laptop.
:/ I'll google the windows installer, if it helps I'll let you know.

What exactly are you trying to do? Make your phone s-off? All you need is to boot ubuntu 32bit from a cd to make your phone s-off. Everything else is pretty much done through windows or custom recovery. All of t-mobiles RUUs are .zip files and are flashed through the bootloader and the windows toolkits should be able to flash them otherwise some of the other carrier RUUs are .exe files.
No, Hasoon's aio doesn't work on my operating system, I do not know why.
It works fine on windows 7, but I do not always have access to it.
That's why I wanted to dual boot with Ubuntu. If I could get the drivers and programs to work, I can try booting into Cyanogenmod knowing that if anything happens, I can reboot my phone the way I did last time.
I would try WindyCityRockr's WinDroid program. Hasoon's program wasn't Woking for me either but WinDroid worked for me on Windows 8. If that works you may not need to have Ubuntu installed. Booting Ubuntu from a CD is probably your best option

I'll try it out, I still have to re-root my phone lol so if that works, I'll let you know.
Hey guys. I'm becoming very frustrated with both my PC and phone for various reasons, and would really appreciate a little bit of help...
A couple of months ago, Cyanogenmod nightly updates stopped flashing via TWRP on my device. Every time I attempted to flash, TWRP would dump the file and say the MD5 checksum was missing (which I know it wasn't). I tried re-flashing my recovery with new TWRP, as well as CWM, but neither fixed the problem.
Currently, any time I go into TWRP it mistakenly thinks I have NO operating system installed on my phone, although the phone boots into the stock ROM fine.
My phone also randomly decided to stop working with my computer, even though I have HTC sync and drivers installed. I'm assuming these two issues are somewhat related, since maybe Windows is not detecting my Android phone's operating system. What's odd however is that my work PC running Arch Linux with Android SDK/MTP/whatever installed is able to detect and browse my phone just fine.
If anyone has any tips on how to fix this I'd really appreciate it. I'm tired of running the stock 4.1 ROM, I'm not even able to update it as every time the phone reboots to install the update TWRP just dumps the file.
Sounds like you're using the wrong TWRP. If you haven't updated to the new partition layout yet, you should be using the official TWRP. It should work fine. If you have updated to the 4.3 setup already, then you need to use a modified TWRP.

I'm using the official TWRP as provided through their site for our devices. I've tried flashing it both through the "Goo" android installer and through Fastboot on Linux.
How can I tell if I'm 4.3? Or do you just mean Android 4.3 (currently I'm still on 4.1)?
Thank you for your comment

If you've never updated to Android 4.3, then the "official" TWRP still won't work for recent CM ROMs.
You need one of the ones from here: http://mdmower.cmphys.com/twrp-jewel/.
I followed a guide to install Lolipop on my device, I managed to get the 15 Second ADB Installer but could only get the 1.3 version to work.
When I try to do it now it states on the device that I need 1.3.2 or higher. The 1.4 download gives me an Access Denied message and installed 0 drivers.
The device is currently on Fire OS 5, I hear Kit Kat maybe the best option.
Apologies if this makes no sense, many of the tutorials I seem to find are for rooted devices.
Thanks,

Oh, we need some clarification. You're on rooted OS 5 or unrooted? When you say "When I try to do it now . . ." what is it you're trying to do? Do you want rooted KK or unrooted? What exactly do you wish to achieve?
In any case, you do need latest drivers, but I need to address that and 15 second adb in the adb guide thread for others to see. Please answer above questions here and then see this post about driver/15-second adb. Thanks.
I've been trying for days to get ubuntu touch on my Nexus 10, and nothing works. Finally posted on AskUbuntu, but it's not getting much attention. At this point I just want to know if what I am trying is even possible. Here is a copy-paste of the post:
askubuntu[dot]com/questions/796924/can-not-install-ubuntu-touch-on-nexus-10
I am having a lot of trouble installing Ubuntu onto my Nexus 10 (16gb wifi edition). I have followed the instructions here [1] and here[2]. No matter what I do it ends with the message 'this phone needs restoring from a pc or service center'. I have searched ask ubuntu and other forums and here is what I have tried to solve the problem. Installed android 4.4.4 stock, cyanogenmod 11, android 4.0 stock prior to flashing. I also formatted with
$ fastboot format cache
$ fastboot format userdata
as suggested here[3]. Nothing seems to work.
Other things to note, I am using ubuntu-device-flash on a virtual box machine running ubuntu 16.04, and it takes a long time for ubuntu-device-flash to push the last .tar.xz file to my tablet, somewhere in the range of 1 hour or more. Last night I let it run overnight because some on some forums the response to similar problems was "be patient" once you see the 'this phone needs restoring...' error. When I woke up the phone was in a boot loop and I had to re-flash stock 4.4.4.
I have successfully flashed ubuntu version 2 with the dual boot app in android, but I can't get it to update. I also have not been successful in getting the app to use the UBports server as a custom server to install the latest version, similar to this guy[4].
Anyone know what could be wrong?

Are you sure that there is a newer version than 2?
Somewhere I picked up that ubports offer their own fork of the multirom app which uses their servers.
Edit: You could also try to only flash the recovery initially and see whether you get any further that way. So after using ubuntu-device-flash, you should have a recovery image somewhere in ~/.cache/ubuntusomethingoranother/ and in theory you should be able to flash that with fastboot.
