Absolutely not. I just read the info at the link too and it says nothing about using that for any non Nexus device.

It does say any phone read the second paragraph
"Flashing an Android image is super easy, especially on a Nexus device. You can use this tutorial for installing the image on your Nexus or for flashing any other image on any other phone."
Yes, but not the Nexus imgs on any other phone. They have to be specific to the phone. Also, that's still not even close to correct. Most manufacturers have their own way to restore or update the phone and many use different formats that are not compatible with other types of phones. Samsung does not even have a fastboot mode, so obviously there would be no way to use that guide or anything similar to do that.

While it does say flashing an Android image is easy, that applies mostly to Nexus devices. For other devices like Sony, Samsung etc they have a specific version of Android that must be flashed with the brand of phone to make it work. For example:
Samsung - TouchWiz
HTC - Sense
Xiaomi - MIUI

That's the reason why ROM ports exist. Using the manufacturer ROM as a base ROM you're able to port ROMs from different manufacturers to your device provided you know how and what you're doing.

AOSP ports are not built upon manufacturer roms. They use vendor blobs, but that's it.

No this is not true. Each device needs a kernel built by the OEM for the device.
The nexus devices use a majority of opensource software as to where the s4 doesnt.
The best you will find is a buggy port in about 6 months or so and that is even if someone can hack together a working kernel.

Dude you asked the same question thrice, just differently worded. For god's sake.
Read up on porting ROMs if you want to know how a ROM for one device is made to work on another. It usually requires a device specific kernel that's made to be compatible with the other device's ROM, and then there's resizing work to be done for all the apps if the other device's screen is of a larger resolution.
Judging by your questions, it's obvious you don't have any developer knowledge, and porting requires quite a bit of it. So, for the last time, NO you can't do whatever you're asking.
same specs device
hi,
i have a similar question but for an identical hardware phones.
my device is with mt6577 cpu (neo n002), and running ICS i searched for a JB rom but didn't find one.
there are other devices with that chipset even same ram (size), screen resolution, maybe same camera, so i wonder if i can port
the JB rom to my device or even install the rom as it is?
if so, can i keep specific drivers from the ICS version, in case i get a problem with gps/camera/mic.....?
thanx.

Hey, I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 and so far I think it's the best!
I have been checking this site a lot to get an idea of what I'm actually buying and now I would like you pros to teach me a few things if you've got the time.
1) I got my device already rooted, though i know how to do it myself.
When I got it there was SuperSU and ClockworkMod Recovery installed on it.
I checked a bit on the internet and couldn't quite get what ClockworkMod is for... When is it mainly useful?
2) I keep reading about CyanogenMod being used in order to update my firmware... but I also read about it being used with ClockworkMod... probably for backup purposes? Care to explain what it is used for?
3) Which leads me to my final question. I search a lot on the internet and came across posts that say that Android 4.2.2 should be released on May/June... I also noticed a lot of websites saying there are already ways to get the update with apps like CyanogenMod.
So is it really safe to get it already? I know I should backup everything anyways just in case but will it be any different from when the official update comes out?
Thank you for your patience and sorry for being a noob

OK.
It's quite complicated, so bear with me.
Your device before rooted, consists of:
An Android OS (Your Main phone operating system)
A Recovery OS (Another operating system that is used to do things like factory reset your device if you cannot boot into Android)
Bootloader (This is the first thing that boots. It wil choose if you boot into android or recovery, depending on if you press any buttons at boot up)
So that is the BASIC OS layout.
When you root, often your stock recovery is replaced with a custom one. This is usually ClockworkMod recovery. There are other alternatives though. This recovery can be used to take backups of the phone and flash Custom Android ROMs and mods (Flashable zips). Sometimes, ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) has an app (CWM manager) to help you reboot into recovery. Although you can just hold volume up and home, then press power to turn on the device and boot into recovery.
CyanogenMod are one of the most famous develiopment teams of custom ROMs. There are 2 types of custom roms on the S3. Those that are directly built on Samsung Android ROMs (with touchwiz and all that jazz) and ones based directly on Google source code (Known as AOSP or Android Open Source Project).
There are a few famous AOSP develpment teams.
CyanogenMod (CM)
AOKP (Android Open Kang Project)
Paranoid Android (AOSPA)
These are much more like what you get on a Nexus device instead of the Samsung devices.
When rooting, or if you have a custom ROM, you need an app called SuperUser or SuperSU which manages applications root access. Any app that needs root access, requests it from SuperSU or SuperUser which prompts you if you want to allow it. See it as a gatekeeper, or a layer of security for your benefit.
Hope this helps.
Not complicated at all
Thank you for clearing that out.
So what about 4.2.2? I read that I can install a custom mod of it but that the official s3 i9300 update isn't out yet.
Does that mean it's risky or might have different features from the official update?
Thanks again for your time!

Samsung builds are up to 4.1.2 currently. There is an unoffical leak of 4.2.1
If you go to an AOSP build of 4.2.2, you will lose all the samsung features. We're unsure when the Sammy 4.2.2 will come.
Gotcha!
So I guess it's better to wait to the official update then take the risk...

Yes, it has 1GB of RAM. No, there is no official update to 4.4. However, you can easily get it with either a port posted here, or using an AOSP ROM. You can even put 5.0.2 on it if you want.

No AOSP won't be even remotely similar and yes, anything you flash can brick it if you don't understand what you are doing.

Yes, they are similar because they are based on sammy roms with the touchwiz ui.

No, that just means that if you turn off your phone and plug a charger in it will boot up automatically while charging. That's all.
I'm not sure if it is fixed in the stock kernel, but it sure is in Boeffla kernel. I would suggest you use that.
For issues concerning SMS delivery, bluetooth or camera there are fixes available in the back-to-n00t thread. Just try it out. In any case read the threads in my sig carefully.

I'm afraid you'll be waiting for a long time, as we need the kernel source codes first. Xiaomi doesn't seem to be excited about supporting developers in this way, unfortunately.

I don't think Xiaomi's to blame for that... Mediatek says "I'll deliver an awesome CPU for a really low price", and Xiaomi accepts, although the fine print says Mediatek retains all sources and control over the kernel. The only way out of this deadend would be for Xiaomi to "demand" sources to be delivered, even if only to them, in order to make their own devices better, cancelling any and all present and future contracts if otherwise.
Either way, I'm oldschool, I still (want to) believe sources will be leaked somehow, and the general public will (deservingly) get a perfected ROM and kernel for the device they purchased, independently of eventual legal terms.

I thought we had already tried to port known kernel sources from other MediaTek devices like the HTC One M9+ and others that had already had their kernels released? Maybe that was some other code, I'm not sure.
I've heard the faintest of rumors that some people already have the kernel source codes and are not releasing them for fear of prosecution, although I can't confirm them or even say I'm convinced myself.

To root and flashing rom you can referred to post #11 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-2/help/redmi-note-2-downgrade-upgrade-problem-t3243079
1) tried used this to root: http://en.miui.com/thread-152550-1-1.html?mobile=2 if failed then used the below method.
2) Windroid was an easy way to root rmn2: http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=167882&extra=pag
For flashing any rom to your existing unofficial rom, you need to full wiped, so used the miui system backup to backup you data. It will make you newly flashed rom stable.

What I read somewhere around here was that some sources were leaked, but they were incomplete. However, this being the mighty anonymous internet, I think anyone would be able to upload a kernel (or even the source) somewhere anonymously, even if through proxies.

Settings/About Device/Software Update for OTA updates, but if there are no updates from the carrier/manufacturer...a lot of devices have custom ROMs that can be installed through custom recovery such as TWRP.

If you want to get an update right away when it gets launched, you need to get a Nexus of Google Pixel. No manufacturer is good enough to deliver a fast update.
If you want to check for updates on your phone, go to your settings, scroll all down and go into "System Updates" (the name varies with phone / ROM). If there is any avaiable, you can update.

Well, for that you would need for your manufacturer to make the update. If you are sure that there are no more official updates, the choice is to take a risk and flash a new ROM. You don't seem to have much experience in this stuff, so I don't recommend messing with that, because if something goes wrong, you devices bricks (dies). If you really want to proceed, try googling: "*your device name* + *model* ROM". Don't forget to read some guides on flashing first, to get more knowledge about what you are going to do. Making a new thread about that probably would be good.
(By the way, I forgot you asked if there is any smartphone that can get the update right when it is launched. They are the Nexus devices and the Google Pixel)

Making a new thread about that probably would be good.
(By the way, I forgot you asked if there is any smartphone that can get the update right when it is launched. They are the Nexus devices and the Google Pixel)

What's flashing a new ROM? What does 'device bricks(dies)' mean?

Im going to simplify this as much as I can:
First of all, this is modifying your device, and if you do any of this, you will void your warranty.
ROM can be considered the operative system of your device. Flashing means putting a new one(but still android-based). To do that people use custom recoveries, like TWRP or CWM. They are like the one that comes with the phone, but wit a lot of more features.
Bricking a device is when something goes wrong while modifying your device. There are 2 types of bricks: the Soft and Hard. The Soft-Brick is when your ROM/software has any problem and starts bootlooping (this means it will keep restarting). You can easily fix that, by just getting to stock (factory) ROM or flashing the one you had again. The Hard-Brick is when your device doesn't even boot, or something more serious has happened. There is no consistent way on fixing any hard-bricks, as it depends on what you have done, luck and device.
If my explanation is bad or you can't understand it, there are some links that may help you.
Fastboot (I can't explain properly what it is)
What is a custom Recovery
What is a custom ROM
If you really want to proceed, you will lose your warranty of the device. Also, remember that ROMs and custom recoveries are device specific! Don't try using another device compilation on yours.
