Does anyone have any ideas on how to wifi tether this thing? Great $49.95 phone from Straight Talk running on ATT. Easy to root. But I can't get the ususal suspects to work(wifi tether for root, foxfi, pda-net). Any Ideas?
Whoops, it is a Pronto not a Snapto.

Pronto not Snapto. Not that it would matter a great deal as the specs are nearly identical.
How do I unlock it?

You can root it and use barnacle, or use the hotspot feature under the "wireless and network settings" if AT&T hasn't disabled it. I was planning on getting one earlier today, but wasn't able to get to the store before work.
Check the settings and see if "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature is there. If it is it will just use your regular data plan.
Ok thanks im going to just wait for a root to come out.

wifi hotspot has not been disabled on my sgs2, not rooted
When I picked up my phone at AT&T they asked me if I wanted the family (?) tether plan for $45/mo. I said no. When I checked the phone at home, the tether option was there, so is it cool to tether the phone without getting a nasty gram?

The moment you turn that on and start using it you will get a notice that you will need to change to that tether plan. Unless you get PDAnet or root the phone and use one of those apps.
I rooted , used Titanium Backup and froze tethering manager app, wifi tethering now works fine with my android tablet.

Any link to rooting the AT&T version? Want to root and use the built in tether. As of now, when you try to use the tether it will say you need to have the tether option. Don't want to pay the extra for using it a few times a month.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it.
I guess I root.
You need to root the phone and unintall the Tethering Manager in order to use the built-in tethering features without paying for it.
Just remember that a lot of people have been getting nastygrams from AT&T even without interference from tethering manager. There has been a lot of speculation as to the cause, but naive tethering is detectable in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to up your bill by $20.
Has anyone actually used Barnacle with this phone?
I rooted and installed Barnacle, which has to be downloaded from their site because it is blocked in Market. I start Barnacle and it has SU privilege, but no device can see the hotspot it creates. Even when I create the WiFi network there is no connection.
I'm having the same problem as far as my phone telling me I need a tethering plan. So I called At&t & they said I'd have to basically lose my grandfathered in plan of Unlimited just so I can surf the net for an extra $45 a mnth!! WTF!! I Didn't have this problem with my Cappy.. Wut to friggin do?? Can't root without Internet?? Someone please help a brother out!!

If you want to tether without paying for it, you have to root and freeze/remove tethering manager, or use a third-party app. Plus, you still risk AT&T slapping you with the overpriced tethering plan if they catch you. Not really sure there is anything you can do.
I figured as much. I never had a problem up til today when I got my new Gs2. I don't tether much at all to be honest with you. But at&t screwed me cause now I'm without Internet so I can't root even if I wanted to. I think I have no choice but to get a wireless Internet card til I root & find a decent ROM. Thanks a bunch for the advice though.. Much appreciated!!

Cappy users are getting nailed right and left, same for Infuse users.
I've been OK, but so far I've only tethered Android tablets (Galaxy Tab 10.1) in the past month or two.

Earlier this year I used the hotspot on my Dell Streak to tether my laptop for an entire week. Never heard anything from AT&T. It has a stock ROM from another region and is rooted. I haven't unloaded any stock apps on it.

You don't necessarily have to download it from their site. If you have a wifi connection you should be able to put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and connect that way. Either that or remove the sim card and get on wifi. As long as the sim is either removed or disabled and you are on wifi the market will not be filtered.
Maybe you're trying to connect devices to it that can either only see an infrastructure mode access point or are set to only connect to those. My laptop didn't see mine at first, but then I changed the setting in the wireless to show all types of connections (ad-hoc and infrastructure) and it worked. I had to actually modify the wifi_supplicant file on my moto Xoom for it to see ad-hoc connections.

This one worked perfectly for me and I didn't need to use SuperOneClick after loading it as it was already rooted. Go here.
I never had any issues or nasty-grams from AT&T for wifi tether, but I only used it when I needed too which honestly, wasn't too often.
I'm sure it is here somewehere but I can't find it.
Is there something I can do to get wifi tether (4g pref)
w/o root?
TIA

You can easily tether your unlimited phone. Verizon has an add-on to your plan that permits it.
OK, I know. You want to do it without paying.
Yes, it's quite possible, apparently.
I used to have Wireless Tether for Root Users back on my s2, I think it came with CM7 but it was also a stand alone app, was basically the perfect app, gave root users a reliable un-throttled tether. I tried installing it after tr'ing my s4 but it just turns yellow and says there's an error then acts like it's working. I'm guessing because it hasn't been updated in about 2 years. is there something similar to this? I've read pdanet+ combined with foxfi is supposed to be good but it disconnects randomly I guess to encourage buying the premium version. I'm moving Monday and could use a reliable wireless tether for my girlfriend and a reliable wired tether for myself. I'd like to still be able to play LOL using my 4g and it should be possible as my friend tethered both of us off of his sprint 4g. here's the old app i'm referring to:

Has anyone tried to get WiFi Tether Router working on the One M9 after root?
It worked fine on the M8, but I am still trying to get it to work on the M9.

Yikes !! That's not good.
I know OMJ said he's confident his ROM will have Native Tether working.
I'm waiting a bit before unlocking/rooting.
You should be ok with unlocking. That is the first thing I did as it wipes the phone.
I have yet to install TWRP and root as I have to digest how it affects the OTA possibilities. Honestly if native tethering is somehow enabled I might stick with stock rom minus some of the bloat. It isn't that bad IMO.

I prefer wait to see if Sunshine S-OFF will even need an unlock. It didn't for M8 which was nice.
Also if things don't change by the time my 14 days are up I might bail on M9.
I'm working with the developer now, but so far it is not working. Any other ideas for a Wi-Fi hotspot once rooted?
As of now, the developer does not know why it is not working on the M9.
Does anyone have any ideas?

bad boys is what ? rom .//? found it..
Yes.
Native Tethering works great for me on BadBoyz. USB Tether, Bluetooth Tether and WI-FI Hotspot has worked flawless for me since I got the phone.
Just FYI. Wifi Tether Router now works again with root only. No mods required.
See his release notes on google play. I ran RUU and let TWRP do the root. Fired up Wifi Tether Router and it works. Used Method 2.
I'd be curious is it works while roaming (I should say on CDMA). I'm pretty sure Bad Boys ROM with Native Tether does work.
FYI. Just tested. Wifi Tether Router will work on Roaming Networks (i.e. Non Sprint CDMA networks).
Ran RUU (.19) and only installed TWRP and TWRP rooted it. Then installed Wifi Tether Router.
I used this to enable native tethering http://www.cultofandroid.com/61639/enable-free-wi-fi-tethering-htc-one-m8/ and I confirm it works on the m9. And I'm not running a custom ROM. Just stock 5.1 rooted. It works on 3g/LTE

Does it stick after reboot? You on Sprint? I'd be surprised it's that easy given the work that Bad Boys and Wifi Tether Router had to do.
A lot of the comments on the M8 that this was for does not look too positive.

Actually it has stuck since I did it. I use it to tether my tablet while away from WiFi. I was surprised as well. And yes, I'm on Sprint.
From what I've read on this thread, WiFi tethering is available by rooting alone... Can anyone confirm?
Seems like bad boyz rom has WiFi tethering built in and functioning as an alternative option?

Has anyone figured out how to get tether working on Marshmallow? I just rooted and installed wifi tether and so far can't seem to get my computers to find the tether network.
I figured it out, I froze tether guard using titanium backup, then installed free tether unlocker from the play store, now Wi-Fi tether router is working, using the settings specified on the website
