Exchange GAL and WPA2 Enterprise WiFi in Android 6.0 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently updated my Nexus 6 with Android M. Now I am facing 2 major issues, which are affecting my official life very badly.
1. Android L used to lookup contacts from our Corporate Exchange GAL. I didn't have to store contacts locally. Android M is not doing this and it's really painful now.
2. My company is using WPA2 Enterprise WiFi, which I used to add using 802.1x EAP in Android L. It worked fine. Now, Android M just won't connect to this network anymore, though it let's me add this network. It keeps saying 'Connecting...'
Anyone got any idea? If these are bugs, I would rather go back to Android L 5.1.1
Thanks you [emoji4]

Yes, GAL is a bug, already reported. You can use Nine from Google play store as a workaround. I think it has something to do with new permissions model, as I checked the bug report.
I am also using company wifi with PEAP authentication, it works ok.

rapmancz,
Can you point me to this bug report so I can track this bug and see updates.
I figured it was permissions related.

I can't post links, so google - android issue 189195

Hi rapmancz,
I did reformat my device, but the issue with WiFi connection persist. How is WiFi AP configured at your end since you're able to connect? I'm trying to connect an AP configured with WPA2 Enterprise, which worked fine on Android 5.1.1

It is an issue with the RADIUS backend. See: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=188867#c29

Thanks nick.
It seems both issues are going to stay for a while. Neither we know when Google will release update nor our corporate IT would be willing to fix it anytime soon.
I'll go back to 5.1.1 for the time being.

Hi,
No problem!
There's nothing for Google to fix on the 802.1X/EAP front, certainly nothing that they should change.
Cheers,
Nick

Well, I believe Google should have properly informed of this well before and let customers know the impact.
But by saying Google to fix, I meant GAL issue. It really is a bug.

This is definitely a bug, at least Google is aware of it and have assigned an internal tracking number for this bug.
As rapmancz said, google "android issue 189195" and you will see the bug tracker.

SGS3 - Wifi and YouTube issue?

I have suddenly developed an issue with my new SGS3. When using the YouTube app I am disconnected from my wifi and it uses mobile data (a rather costly exercise!). It seems to only happen when I watch full screen in landscape for some strange reason.
This seems to be a recent occurrence. I did try uninstalling updates to the app and tested but still had the same problem.
Anyone else experiencing this and any solutions?
I am using stock software with no rooting.

Yeah, in my online search for a solution I have come across mention of the opposite problem for some. Weird. I'm hoping someone has a solution or do we need need to wait for Google to get their act together?

Since Google wallet works on the Sprint version now is there a way to make it work with other carriers? Has any body tried?

Same here; last info I've heard as I understand it is that the AT&T HTC One does not have the Secure Element enabled. I'm not sure if there's a workaround, but I'm searching for answers. It has been suggested that a new ROM with the secure element enabled might help, but I don't know of any (but I am far from an expert

I think It may. The sprint version actually has gsm radios with 3g and lte. So As the international and t-mobile and att version are all the same boards it is not a big stretch to say that the sprint board may be the same too or have the same major components. I think we will have a hack for wallet at some point.

I dont believe it works. It involves using the xposed disable google wallet checks method, and many people(including myself) have tried this and it did NOT work. IT might let you intall google wallet, but actually getting it to work is another ballgame
I dont remember what carrier the video creator said he had, but I dont think it was AT&T

Hey guys, just dropping by from the DNA forum. For anyone interested I would keep an eye on this site...
http://www.simplytapp.com/
Tapp works different then Google Wallet, as in it doesn't require an embedded secure element. There was an older version of Tapp released in the play store when CyanogenMod 9 was released, but they are currently working on a newer version. I was able to get in touch with a member of the Tapp team, and was informed that the project is still on track!
Until Google decides to make some major changes to how Google Wallet functions with the secure element, then we won't be seeing GW on the DNA or the One series ( aside from sprint).

not to sound rude but it's a little early to be saying this don't you think? Every device I have ever owned has ended up with a working version of wallet, most recent being the att GS3

If someone can rewrite wallet to make it work without an SE then more power to them. I would love to see it happen. Most of the hacks and work arounds have involved build.prop changes, and libs from a sprint variant to make wallet function correctly. So far that appears to not be the case anymore. Google them selves said with the release of the Google Edition HTC One that it does not have an embedded secure element, thus it cannot be used with Google Wallet.
It's a ****ty situation for HTC devices. Either HTC needs to ship secure elements on there phones or Google needs to allow Wallet to work without one.
Hopefully with apps like SimplyTapp, this will force some much needed change in this area!

Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
Yes I get this several times a day (10+ times). I've found that either going in and out of airplane mode, or more easily, attempting to place a call (doesn't matter if it connects, I usually just call my voicemail and hang up immediately) fixes it. I had this issue much less frequently with the GS4 and I had a previous GS5 that I turned in on warranty for an unrelated microphone issue which had the same problem. I live in a big city if that matters at all as it's possible it's a network issue (I often go into buildings/elevators where there is no service which sometimes seems to cause it when the phone tries to reconnect to the network).
I've found that a little bit of tape helps keep my data from being loose.

Hard to say since you gave us no details about your phone configuration. What is your OS version? One of the bugs that the 4.4.3 update is purported to address is frequent data connection dropouts. Sound familiar?

6.0.1 killed my LTE, but here's how I fixed it

Edit: Updated steps below for possible permanent fix.
So I took the OTA update (I am stock) a few days ago, the next day I realized that I wasn't ever getting LTE, even in places where before I got full coverage. I rebooted, turned data on and off, airplane mode on/off, none of it worked.
What finally did it was going in to Cellular Networks Settings and changing from LTE to 3G and then back again. Magically I started getting LTE again.
More Specific Steps:
Go to Settings->Under "Wireless & Networks" click "More"->Cellular Networks->Preferred Network Type. Switch from LTE to 3G, wait for the data to reconnect, then switch it back to LTE.
My friend was seeing similar issues (not getting LTE where he knew he got it before, mainly at his house) after taking the 6.0.1 on his stock Nexus 5. So I told him what I did and it appears to have fixed his issue too.
Just wanted to let others know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~edit
Updated Steps:
1.) Go to Settings->Under "Wireless & Networks" click "More"->Cellular Networks->Preferred Network Type. Switch from LTE to 3G, wait for the data to reconnect.
2.) reboot your phone.
3.) Go back into Settings->Under "Wireless & Networks" click "More"->Cellular Networks->Preferred Network Type. Switch from 3G back to LTE.
That had been the only thing to keep LTE across boots.
can you play YouTube video on 1080p or 4k without buffering on T-Mobile network. i have T-Mobile and i have problem playing video. my phone show LTE.
Oh yea, forgot to say, I'm on AT&T in Austin, TX. I was wondering if it had something to do with the new band support that went into this or what. But yea, I stopped getting all LTE until I toggled that setting.
It was definitely a problem for me though, so I just thought I would share.
My friend (who is still on the Nexus 5) is on T-Mobile. But he was still getting some LTE, he said at his apartment he used to always get full LTE reception and after the update it would just come and go. But after toggling the setting seems to have brought back his solid reception.
Absolutely. Just reboot the phone into the bootloader and choose update using adb. You have to download the update zip from Google's servers and also you need sdk tools installed. Macs are definitely easier as they just work, windows drivers are a pain but it's possible to get it working, just hit and miss it seems. No unlocked bootloader or root needed.
Search Google for "update nexus manually". Most of the big Android sites have walkthroughs. Barring that just wait for the OTA. I've lazily done that from time to time and it can take anywhere from a day or three to weeks.
You, sir, are a GENIUS!! What a smart solution! Now I can send and receive calls, SMS and voicemails while in low signal areas... and I just thought about this... we can use digits while roaming internationally to avoid the hassle of using their local phone number system!
Just get a local sim card for data and as the OP said, BAM!! Call people with your local number. That's a great idea for friends and families traveling together. Everyone can simply call each other on their regular phone number, using the Digits app. :victory: :highfive:
Nice!!! Glad I could be of assistance.
