I've got 2015052 device from jd.com and flashed stock rom from here: http://en.miui.com/download-274.html using stock recovery. Then I've flashed twrp from here http://en.miui.com/thread-152550-1-1.html using stock recovery again.
Now I have twrp that can do backups but can't restore them. my twrp alsco can't install anything that modifies system partition.
I store backups on 64gb sdcard.
When I restore backup twrp starts restoring system as usual but then dies in few seconds with following message:

Copy the backup into internal-storage and restore again, it should work now.

Same error with internal memory. I have a feeling that wiping data from twrp makes it unable to restore and install zips.

DId you ever figure this out? Have the same issue on my Nexus7 2013 Wifi, installed CM, want to move back to backup of stock. But crash in to that proverbial Wall. And given that it's a Nexus, it's on Internal Storage, as it's all one big internal Storage.

Nope. I've tried 4 to 5 twrps for my device but none of them can restore backup reliably.

A week ago,I flashed cwm touch recovery(1st time I install a custom recovery on my gs3) with odin.I decided to try out wanamlite so I made a nandroid backup of my ROM(stock 4.1.2) then flashed wanamlite.I had a titanium backup of my data so I could restore it on wanamlite but I forgot to put it on my pc before flashing and wiping data(silly I know lol) so I wanted to restore my nandroid backup so I could make another TB of my data but the restore wasn't successful.I got this error message in cwm touch ''error restoring /data !'' or smthin similar and I got in a bootloop.I tried flashing back stock ROM and wiping data(with sd card) then tried to restore the nandroid again,got the same error.I later found out that titanium backup can restore data from a nandroid.Anyways,I tried to make a backup using TWRP but when I tried to restore it,I got in a bootloop again...what could be the problem ? I never had this problem with my gs2...
TL;DR:restoring a nandroid backup gets me in a bootloop whether I use cwm touch or TWRP.

Yes I backed up to the internal sd card.I backed up once with cwm and TWRP.Btw,when I tried restoring I had to move the backup from pc to phone because I did a full data wipe and the backup was gone(in both times) if that makes any difference.I have made sure the backup was the same size when I moved it to and from my pc.
Did you enable MD5 check? Could it be files damage to cause unsuccessful boot up?

No but why would they be damaged ? and why would it happen TWICE ? anyways,I will try again now with md5 check.
UPDATE:tried out with md5 checking,didn't get any errors but I still got into bootloop :/
if you didn't turn md5 on Before backing up, there's no md5 to compare to, hence no errors.

It is not,in fact I don't even have an external sd card.I did format everything before trying to restore.
I have been doing lots of ROM / Kernel experimentation on my VZW S4, and on attempting to take a backup of my most recent good configuration I received an error from TWRP that there is not enough space available because there is not enough space for my /Data partition which TWRP sees as 2438401MB or 2.4TB!
Since it is impossible that my on device /Data partition is 2.4TB, anyone have any suggestions on how to repair?
Or do I need to do a full install via Odin using the repartition option?

Wow, it would be cool if you had 2tb, umm sounds like the recovery is corrupt, if it were me, I would try that first, if it does not work, do the odin flash to stock.

I reinstalled the TWRP recovery, and also reflashed a Verizon stock image file...but TWRP is still reporting my /data partition at 2.4TB.
I'm thinking I need to repartition, but have never done so on an Android device.
Recommendations?
I would try reading the odin features and what it does to re-partition. It has that option, but messing with the partition structure will cause a hard brick if not careful.

Thinking about getting an S4 but w/only 9GB free, would like to keep my backups on the SD card I'm going to get for it. I know I could move them there after creating them, but don't want to deal with having to move them back and forth if I need to restore one.

yes. thats what i do. However, I was using TWRP to backup my aokp rom that i set up and it wouldnt back it up and read the size would be 16gigs. However, my slim rom backup just fine without reporting a huge file size.

Maybe sectors in eMMC going bad. My advice would be to have at least 4GB free on internal SD at all times. Backup weekly but only to external SD. Avoid writing to internal SD as much as possible. (also be 100% certain that you have multiple EFS backups). If you are using a dual-boot kernel - try to do most of your extensive work in a ROM that you install as second (and keep 1st as emergency backup).

I don't think it is covered - or at least not as long as the phone is non-stock and it still starts
The backups can be done from a custom recovery - for instance with Philz there is a menu called "Backup to external SD". By using external SD you are minimizing the chance that something goes bad on the internal SD.

TWRP also can backup to external drive. Have been tried and failed...
As your suggestion I installed Philz recovery and "Backup to external SD" and it completed nicely without any problem :laugh:
what is the different? i think it should be same backup target. it is external SD card but failed with TWRP.

I think it might be a small difference on where the intermediary files are stored but I can't say anything more without studying the source code (and asking Phil what the differences are in the dedicated Philz thread might be simpler).

After a successful backup of Android 4.2 and a failed flash of Android 4.4, I am unable to see the contents of my micro SD card from within TWRP 2.7.0.0. So, I am unable to restore my backup.

Flash your stock BOOT.IMG with Sp Flash Tool , then restart TWRP and restore your backup

What should I include in my nandroid backup if I wish to restore all my apps and their data to the 4Gb version? Until now, my backups include System-Data-Boot and wifi-bluetooth data.

Why not simply use MIUI backup? It also backups all your apps with data and your settings. Copy the back up folder to your SD card or computer and restore it on your new phone.
If you're rooted, you can use Titanium Backup, the best way to backup and restore apps.
If not, you can try an ADB backup but I can't guarantee it'll work well: https://9to5google.com/2017/11/04/how-to-backup-restore-android-device-data-android-basics/
You don't need the Android SDK. Just grab the platform-tools package, unzip it to your desktop, CD into it (use a command prompt or terminal to enter the directory) and then follow the guide.

The only thing you need to do is change the device id in your backups. First backup your original device to an sdcard then put that card in your new device. Next backup just boot (this creates the new device id directory) then move full backup to new id. Last just restore the full backup. I know this works because I went from 3gb to 4gb a few months ago. Make sure you DONT restore efs from old device to new.

I used Titanium before but I'd like to do something really easy and clean and in a one swoop solution like a nandroid restore.
I think I'm going to go the solution proposed by cidxtc because it's tested.

All right, please cidxtc let me resume to make sure I understand you correctly because I'm a noob.
1/ From the 3Gb phone, I entrer RedWolf TWRP recovery, make a backup of just 'System + Data' (see attached screenshot) and not Boot to a SD card.
2/ Put the SD card in the 4Gb phone, enter recovery and select to backup 'Boot' only. Then move the 3Gb backup 'System + Data' into the RedWolf folder where the 4Gb 'Boot' backup is. Afterwards, I just have to restore the 'System + Data' from there.
Is this correct ?

You need system, data, and boot from the 3gb device. The rest is correct.

The new phone should arrive next week. I was doing my homework to be ready. I'll come back and let you know how it goes. Hopefully everything will go smoothly if i do as discussed.
I received my phone today and will apply to unlock its bootloader first, then root it.
Meanwhile, could you please cidxtc explain, if possible, why I shouldn't include the boot file in the nandroid backup of the 3Gb phone to be restored to the 4Gb phone? Will the 4Gb phone boot without this file after restoring just system and data only?

You need full backup of 3gb phone (boot,system,data).
