I have been a user of layers for awhile now and enjoy using it when I made AOSP builds. I added code to Sony LP stock and it worked fine but never released it public, good thing about Marshmallow is that it doesn't need code works out of the box. Even better is that Concept doesn't have Sony theme engine that won't get in the way of some changes like it did with me in LP Sony stock. I have made a settings layers mod to remove Sony icons and add layers and supersu shortcuts to settings and removed update from about phone.
Instructions: install the latest busybox update from app store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox. This will stop the themes from sticking when removing them also make them work better.
Flash the layers settings mod to help settings dashboard layout theme correctly.
Warning: Some themes may not cover correctly because maybe outdated and don't support new layers etc. Most themes I use work well. I'll list the themes that work and what do not later and when people mention them.

You can use layers on any rooted rom on LP but mainly changes to gapps etc, settings and framework needed code adding on LP

Ok mate,
got my 2099 installed,
got my layers settings mod installed
life is good
just some interesting observations I thought I would share,
After adding the layers functionality to the ROM, it changes the stock beta launcher settings menu. before flashing the layers zip there was an option to select between either "classic" (with an app drawer) or "modern" that didn't seem to have an app drawer and had a search button instead. this option is no longer present after flashing the layers zip. also the beta launcher now has a "themes" button in the widget/shortcut/wallpaper menu accessed via pinching in on the home screen. I assume this is because its has recognised the vendors/overlay folder is present but sonys theming menu/apps are not.
do I expect you to do anything about this? not at all, just reporting in.
Also, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vapor.rhamej&hl=en theme applies perfectly to the beta.
keen to see what layers everyone else is using??

Hey man! What rom are u using?
Cuz I flash u zip file on mine and settings stop to work, when I try to open settings force close and restart the phone.
At least I could test art layers theme and phone + contact doesn't theme even with u zip flashed.

As faar as I understand Layers do not work on sony stock (or stock based) ROMs without further modifications.

From what I understand, Sony's theme engine broke layers themes. Some aspects of the themes work but there's a lot that's broken.
Mind you I haven't tried myself personally in months, but I don't believe removing the Sony theme app has any effect.

I actually got it to work, layers that is but now i cannot uninstall the layers and my settings menu is unreadable lol I will most likely have to ftf back. I've tried setting selinux to permissive & rebooting in every way but just can't uninstall the layers
Update: Had to manually delete overlays from system/vender/overlay
