While cleaning the garage, I found my wife's old nook BNTV250. She said I could have it. So, I've been trying to get a custom rom on there.
I have experience with custom roms. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 running Philz and Lollipop as well as a Note 10.1 running TWRP and Kitkat. So, I have experience with successfully installing recoveries and flashing custom roms to devices.
This one isn't as easy for some reason.
I can get a rooted stock rom by following the directions here...

but no matter what I try, I can't get any further than that.
When I tried to sign in with the google play store, I am told my password is bad (which it isn't). Then I get an email from google in my gmail account telling me that someone (which was me) has tried to sign in to my account but was denied because the device they were using is way too old. So, getting anything on to my device via the play store that I need, such as a terminal emulator, TWRP install, etc, is apparently out of the questions.
gapps won't flash without errors, so that is out of the question, too.
the included es file explorer won't see the internal SD card for a reason I haven't been able to figure out (yes, it has root access), so copying apk files over and installing them from there is out.
When I boot off of ann sd card, and attempt to flash custom recoveries from the internal storage, I am also unsuccessful. With TWRP, I get errors. With CWM, it says it was successful, but it isn't.
So, every road I go down to get CM on this thing is blocked.
Am I missing something, or did I just miss my window by not doing this two years ago?

Try:
1. A factory reset
2. The instructions here---they worked for me as a noob.
That could leave you with CM 10.2. If you'd like something higher, this post might send you in the right direction after you succeed with CM 10.x, but it does become more complicated. Or you can just try to get there directly.
It can't be too late:fingers-crossed: There's life in that tablet yet!
Edit: I see that the CM 10.2 build is no longer posted over at Cyanogenmod. If you want to try it, let me know. I have the zip file.
Sorry, I haven't posted my update yet. I managed to find a solution to the problem with the included es file explorer. That allowed me to install some apk's like terminal emulator which allowed me to get TWRP on, and then the figurative flood gates were open from there.
I am disappointed. I flashed both liquid smooth kitkat, and a lollipop build. Neither are very responsive, and both seem to have great difficulties awakening from a sleeping state (the lollipop one was worse). I looked around, but couldn't find a kernel to flash. Is there a kernel we should be using to speed up these roms? If not, I think I will give up because I stand stand the slowness.

I read through some CM11 threads and was amazed at the different experiences people had, ranging from "works great" to "really sluggish". Speaking only from a logical perspective it seems to me that the more advanced OS you try to shoe-horn into an older device, the more likely you will exhaust (or at least severely task) its hardware resources. Like trying to install Windows 10 on a machine designed for XP with hardware that just barely meets the minimum requirements of Win 10.
All I can say is that CM 10.2 works "great" on my NT. I've yet to encounter an app that I wanted which would not run (of course, my wants may not match yours). I can read the newspaper, listen to music, Kodi runs great--I can even stream a video from the NT to my TV (which has an old laptop connected) using VLCDirect. So lots of life in the thing from my perspective. CM 10.2 does get cranky once in awhile, but a reboot sorts that out. I expect many newer tablets are the same in that respect.
Let me know if you change your mind and want to try CM10.2

You talked me into it. I'll give 10.2 a shot. I'm assuming that's based on Jellybean. I think every app I want to use will still work on Jellybean.

I finally located the 10.x downloads here. I'm using the last stable build, 10.2.1 (Android equivalent 4.3.1). You should use the gapps package that is listed for 10.2 build here.
Like I said in an earlier post, I followed the excellent directions from digixmax here and while the initial boot was kind of confusing, things did sort themselves out. But that method assumes you are starting from stock. If you can't get back to there you'll need to try something else.
Once in a blue moon some app in the PlayStore will be listed as incompatible, I guess because Google can't quite figure out what to make of these modded tablets, even though the Android version is well within reach of CM 10.2. That happened recently to me with my local newspaper app. I just used this site to download the app outside the PlayStore and then side-loaded it. It installed and works just fine.

Well, I installed CM 10.2. Everything works, albiet VERY slowly. I'm going to go google for a kernel now so I can do some overclocking. If I can't find one, then I'm afraid I'll have to let this go. It is just too slow and unresponsive the way it is to be productive.

Sorry it didn't work out well for you. It's obvious to say, but either there is a hardware issue or something did not go right in the flashing. Otherwise no one would bother with these things.
You've probably already looked at this, but just in case, under Settings/Performance/Processor I show a resting CPU freq. of 300 MHz, the governor set at "interactive, and a max. CPU freq. of 1008 MHz. Theoretically you could try playing with those if you have the same figures, but I'm not sure where that would take you.
The only custom kernel I could find for this was for KitKat, so I reflashed with that. I clocked both the minimum and the maximum to 1200 MHz. Even at that, my Antutu benchmarks score was just under 14k, or less than half of the score for my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I never got "great" results with this device so far, but the KK with the custom kernel is the best I have got so far. I'm tempted to try this KK kernel with the lollipop build to see what happens. If I do that, I'll report my results.
This device is over four years old now. Add to this that, at the time, it wasn't exactly designed to break any speed records. All it was intended to do is read ebooks, and play a few other select apps. No GPS, no bluetooth. I guess asking it to run today's resource intense apps like Facebook may be asking too much of it. But, for some weird reason, I can't let this go now. It is kind of like an electronic pet to me. I keep it by my easy chair, and I pick it up and start doing something with it quite often.
Yeah, I was just getting ready to point you toward the kernal for CM 11 but you got there without my direction.
It's really puzzling to me that your system seems so slow. Maybe mine is too! I've never owned a tablet before (I don't count my much-modded NST e-ink reader!) and this one running CM 10.2 seems just fine to me, certainly no worse than laptops I often work with. I have an inexpensive LG smartphone I just bought to use as an mp3 player after my much-loved Insignia Pilot finally died. It runs KitKat and seems about as responsive as my Nook Tablet, maybe slightly better, so I guess a lot is what we are used to.

I bought my G-Tab with the same problems as everyone else. I want to have the power everyone talks about but with the ability that I can use it for professional work with out the embarrassment of it "forcing to close" or just not working. I am willing to sacrifice power and speed (not much of each!) for stability.
I know everyone will say this is asked and answered. I have tried to read everything and figure it out for the last month but I am not getting anywhere with more and more programs/apps being added I am lost.

then the 4.3.2 supplement in that order.
That would get you the latest in roebeet's ROMs, and would add full Market and the latest fixes. The would get you a Quadrant speed of about 2200. And with the Market you can download Angry Birds and the other software you need.
I know this doesn't answer all your questions, but hopefully it will get
you started.

Just one add-on : The TNT Lite supplements are cumalative. So you install 4.3.0 as a base, then 4.3.2 after that -- you don't need 4.3.1.
I do that as that way you only have to install one supplement, if you are a few revisions off.
TNT Lite 4.3.x has one known caveat, which is a problematic sleep. "Quick fix" for now is a custom kernel - I actually recommend a custom kernel for TNT Lite, but I don't add one by default as I feel it should be a user decision.
You know, a permissions fix always helps. Reboot to recovery and under advanced there is an option to fix permissions. A lot of the time this increases stability and reduces fc issues.
+1 for custom kernel. There has been a lot of work done recently to streemline performance and fix known issues. Clemsyns new kernel made a noticeable increase in net performance sleep death issue was fixed.

Ok I can do that.....but what is a kernel and how do I do that? My brother in-law who just knows everything! Told me I need to flash it with a vegan he didnt know how or why. Only that thats what he was going to do with his phone? Obviously you can already tell the level of brains I am dealing with there.

You probably don't need to go down that path (Kernel, etc) until you have a little more experience.
I find pictures more valuable than words, if you aren't happy with how the device is performing for you then this video might help. It is a good start on how to get a more responsive ROM onto the device.

While I totally bow down to Roebeet's awesome-ness I would suggest going with VEGAn 5.1.1. I've been running it for over a month now and it's been rock-solid with not a single force close.
I did have a period where I had a crapload of force-closes a while back (sometime late January/early February?) but I blamed it on me messing around with my build.prop so I could use Swype. Swype is great but I didn't need it. I can't say that was the problem but after I booted into recovery via ClockworkMod .8 and wiped user data, cleared cache, cleard dalvik cache and then flashed VEGAn 5.1 and then the 5.1.1 supplemental I haven't had any problems. I also don't download any and everything that someone posts on these forums; just because I can doesn't mean I should.
I use Dropbox as well and instead of Documents To Go I've been using QuickOffice Pro and have no issues whatsoever. I am also using LogMeIn Ignition to access my work laptop from my gTab so I don't have to lug that around anymore.

VEGAn is A-OK with me. It's a solid ROM and a LOT of users here use it.
One good thing about the GTAB mods is that you have a number of options!

I will be trying all of your suggestions but fear now from trying to catch up in reading that the "GTab is dead" my wife wants a XOOM and I am afraid to buy that thinking it will be dead just as fast.

I have never used CM7 since I just got my Touchpad a few weeks ago when CM9 was out. But CM9 is stable. Just doesnt have camera or mic working. I dont know if these issues are the same with CM7. But if your mom has no need for all the apps android has to offer, she can just use webOS which is more stable than both CM7 and CM9.

Dont bother at all with CM7. CM9 and other ICS roms are far more stable. Pretty much everything works except for the camera and microphone. Battery life is nowhere near as good as in webOS, expect about 2 days of standby or about 5 hours of constant usage. Some people have wifi issues, but they're more often than not fixed by setting the router to avoid higher channels (keep it on 6 or below). The vibrate motor also for some reason stops working after the device goes into sleep, and the only way to get it going again is to reboot but I dont think that's a big issue for anyone.
As for a ROM, I'd recommend CM9 not because its the best but because its the one I'm most familiar with, and I can say its fairly stable. Sometimes it will randomly reboot, but never while actively using it. I'm using a nightly, but since you're giving this to a family member you might be better off with the better tested Alpha 2.
Stable Rom: Classicnerd
For me the most stable rom has been classicnerd's latest version. I have been using it and donot get any force closes or reboots. You can find the latest version at classicnerd.net/Betas/
as far as CM9 and the camera/mic issues, I think she would want to use skype to video chat with family members, so that would be a problem.
Does classicnerd have that issue?

All CM9 ROMs have that issue. Again, she can use webOS for that though.

webos does not have a lot of the banking and other apps she may find useful. Although is it easy to dual boot webOS and android? I'm thinking maybe its useful to boot to webOS just for skype and Android for everything else. That is, if its easy to switch between them.

Dual booting is the only way to do it. As far as I know, you cant replace webOS. When you follow the instructions to install android, you also install what is called a moboot that lets you select which operating system to boot into when starting the device. Switching between the two is easy and is just a matter of restarting your device.

CM7, yes.

Just depends on how adept she is at technology. If she can decently run a computer and text, she should be mostly okay. The one thing I would highly recommend is to make sure she can fix the wifi authentication problem. Basically, every now and then, wifi will have an authentication problem. When this happens, she needs to go to wifi settings, forget the router, toggle wifi off/on, and sign back into the router. This problem usually occurs for me when I leave wifi on and then reboot or get a random reboot. Takes maybe a minute to fix. As far as ROM, I like oat's light and tasty, although they're all pretty good, as they have the same base.
Sorry, I have to get this out of my system, then I'll be back to polite nice Canadian. In short, try one and see.

In the end, again, just grab one, take it for a spin, and try it. Start with the more official ones, and work out from there until you find something you like. If nothing suits your fancy, take the source and make your own. It's pretty simple. So please stop spamming the boards with "Which ROM should I use" threads. </rant mode off>

I have tried CN and others but, I think that Oat's light n' tasty is the best so far. All my games run great and so does netflix and YouTube. But, a Rom is only good if it runs the apps you like. You I'll have to find the one that works best for you. I still think webOS is still good. Just my $0.02
I figured one more opinion can't hurt.
I've been using AOKP on my touchpad ever since I found out that they build roms for hp touchpads. It's great, so is CM9 but for some reason my touchpad refuses to behave with CM9, I'm talking random reboots, wifi issues, SOD (screen of death), and so on. ClassicNerd is also great too but I fell in love with the ROM control options available with AOKP.
Either way, one of the earlier posts mentioned that battery life is weak with ICS which is NOT the case for me, I always have wifi on, with my CPU overclocked to the maximum available frequency and get about 7 days, yes 7 DAYS, of standby and at least a full day of constant use.
As for skype, it is not fully functional with all android devices, just the few that the skype people officially support, I've tried it on my phone and it gave me a lot of issues, so even if the mic and cam were working I doubt skype would work well enough on the TP.
Obviously as others have mentioned earlier ICS is much better on the TP than GB, plus you have the great option of dual booting so you could always use WebOS which is pretty decent itself.
All in all, the TP was a great $100 investment and has a lot of support from some great devs out there. My almost 3 years old nephew has one and he loves it too lol
if you install one of the current nightlys, unofficial or official, she should be running just fine until you come over and install the one of the newer ones for her
the nightlys seem to be running great, even without the supreme mods.

I have been a member for a long time, but I never post anything so in that sense I'm new enough that I can't post this in the forum I wanted to, so I'm asking here. This is going to sound like a hateful rant and I'm sure someone is thinking, "If she knows that, then why is she hatefully ranting?" I am not ready to give up yet, so I'm explaining how I arrived at this point.
I have had my Gtab for about a year and a half. In that time I have rooted it and changed the ROM several times. I moved up to the 1.2 bootloader. In all this time I haven't really used it much because it just doesn't work right no matter which rom I try. Each rom will be ok for a few days, and then it starts getting glitchy. I got so fed up with it, I just parked it for several months and didn't touch it. Just recently I have installed the smoother bean rom. It is sort of ok but it doesn't 'just work'. I'm not a bigtime gamer, I like angry birds and sudoku. I surf the internet, watch videos, read books/magazines that are in epub format. When I study, I highlight text and make notes. When I sit down to study, I need it to work. No hangups or lockups or slow/frozen screens. When I get it out to use at the KH to follow along with the material I studied previously, I need it to just work. It has been to the point that I had to open the thing and physically unplug the battery to get it to behave. I was so excited to get this tablet and read all the information in these forums about it, so I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. The bloom is off the rose and I just want a tablet that does what I want it to do. I don't even care if it has jellybean or ICS or even Honeycomb at this point... I just want a tablet that works without having to fiddle around with the software.
And I don't install crazy amounts of apps. I think there are 7 or 8 that I use. Mainly Moon+ reader, Dolphin browser, Pinterest and Sudoku and Angry birds. I also like to sync my google stuff, calendar, contacts, email.
I'm am thinking I might put it back to stock and let it do all the OTA updates and see how it runs. But if I do that, I have to do the fix that makes the google market and stuff work. If I can do that and in the end have a working tablet that is decent and stable, I'll do it. Can anyone give me any feedback after having done this themselves? How was your tablet after? I remember how horrible it was out of the box. Is it better? MUCH MUCH Better? or just a little better.
Is there another rom that has been proven to be stable? I'm not worried if the camera or bluetooth doesn't work, I don't use those with the tablet. I don't think they are working right now, I'm not sure I haven't tried them since I installed the smoother bean rom. It can be any version of Android, I don't care.
I have given some thought to selling my gtab and getting another tablet, but I don't want to do that just yet. I know there has to be a solution, I just haven't found it yet.
Any feed back or suggestions would be most appreciated. The developers work hard on this tablet and have kept it going when Viewsonic themselves quit on it. I think that its really cool that there is such a devoted community of people who still love this tablet.

My recomendation for "stable"
No expert here, but I have multiple g-tablets. For the "stable" ROM, I use Cyanogenmod cm-7.2.0-smb_a1002.zip

I have very similar experience as yours. Bought the gtab long ago, played for a while, then stashed away for several month, but pulled it out again while some brilliant devs actually put JB on it.
I will never ever go back to stock on gtab. Both Smoother Bean and G-Harmony Jellybean ROMs work reasonably well. In my opinion, they are already pushing the limit of the hardware.

Whereabouts can I download that ROM? I googled the file name and I found the cyanogen download page with the various releases but I wasn't sure which one to pick. I didn't see any that said for the gtab and to tell the truth, it was late and my eyes were sleepy! If you know of a place to download the ROM, I would appreciate it. I would like to give it a shot and see how it goes on my tablet. I'm also going to try out reinstalling JB. I didn't realize there was a update for smoOther bean. So, we'll see what happens.
For stability and full function of the Gtablet, you will probably want to use a Froyo rom. All other versions of Android required re-written drivers and/or kernel, as Viewsonic did not release an official version, and never released their source code. My favorite Froyo rom is:
TNT 6039
I used that rom with VTL Launcher for months, until TeamDRH released their JellyBean rom. You might need to make some minor modifications to see all the apps in the Play store, just read the thread.
I also have another Gtab that is running CyanogenMod. This became my 'stable' tablet. My parents, kids and nephews have used it for months with no complaints. If it gets a little slow, just wipe the cache and it speeds right back up again. Hardware acceleration does not work on Gingerbread, so major 3d games often have graphical glitches, but it is very stable. Here is a link:

Thanks for the feedback ya'll. I did install the CM7 ROM and I also tried another one, I can't remember right now which one it was. I was tempted away by the G-Harmony Jellybean ([ROM-AOSP][BL-1.2]G-Harmony Jellybean 4.1.2 ODEXed (UPDATED 12/28)) , I installed the Overclocked version and I have to say it is doing very well. I did have some SOD's but I supercharged it and bumped up the CPU with No Frills CPU and since then it has had no trouble. Its been since Saturday that I installed this ROM and I have used it a bunch since then. I guess time will tell.
I do have a question tho about a problem I'm having but it's absutely not a deal breaker. I can't get google calendar to sync. I know other ROMS have had a package to install that fixed this but I wasn't sure if I could do that with this rom. I don't want to jack up my install. I don't absolutelly have to get the calendar working right now. I don't have reliable internet at home, so the only time I get online with the thing is when I wifi tether to my phone. Was just wondering if anyone knew how to resolve this issue. Again, I would post in the forum for this ROM but I'm not allowed yet.

When DRH is ready to release their new rom, it will likely be on the other forum first. Search Google for "gtablet roms 1.2/1.3" and that forum will be listed at the top of the page. Can't link you to it, else I may anger the XDA Moderators! Sounds like they are very close, just waiting on a new recovery.
As for my current build, just a basic CM10 build with a few minor customizations (my chosen boot animation, removed/replace system apps, changes to build.prop, etc.). I cannot share it because I am using the new (unreleased) kernel, and it's a pretty 'plain' version of CM10, but you can easily build it all yourself. Once you have your build environment setup, it is easy to rebuild an updated version any time you like. Only thing is, you are on your own when it comes to troubleshooting and support! If you are interested, I can link you to the info I used to figure out how to build the kernel and CM10, and the Git locations of the required source code. You would need a decent computer running 64bit Linux (I use Arch Linux, but Ubuntu is easier to setup), about 50GB hard drive space, and some free time. I just did it for fun, plus I'm impatient and wanted to try the new kernel, and none of the JB roms at the time would run well for me.

I bought my G-Tab whentheyfirst came out and have tried about 13 or 14 ROM's over the last (nearly) two years. In my opinion the best is SmoOtherBean by Nobe1976. Out of the box it is pretty good, I made a few minor adjustments after the install and it is running perfectly.
Changed dpi to160 (enabled Music / Movies in the Play Market)
Used ROM Toolbox to delete Music FX and DSP Manager (fixed problem where music would suddenly blare or change volume)
Set min/max CPU to 312 / 1200 (seems to wake up faster, no lags when browsing,etc)
Give Nob1976 a thumbs up if you like his ROM - stop the trolls who have chased off so many devs.....

This post. A million times this post. Smooth bean looks promising but I've been through so many roms with mediocre to poor tab perf.

This is going to sound like a hateful rant and I'm sure someone is thinking, "If she knows that, then why is she hatefully ranting?" I am not ready to give up yet, so I'm explaining how I arrived at this point.
I have had my Gtab for about a year and a half. In that time I have rooted it and changed the ROM several times. I moved up to the 1.2 bootloader. In all this time I haven't really used it much because it just doesn't work right no matter which rom I try. Each rom will be ok for a few days, and then it starts getting glitchy. I got so fed up with it, I just parked it for several months and didn't touch it. Just recently I have installed the smoother bean rom. It is sort of ok but it doesn't 'just work'. I'm not a bigtime gamer, I like angry birds and sudoku. I surf the internet, watch videos, read books/magazines that are in epub format. When I study, I highlight text and make notes. When I sit down to study, I need it to work. No hangups or lockups or slow/frozen screens. When I get it out to use at the KH to follow along with the material I studied previously, I need it to just work. It has been to the point that I had to open the thing and physically unplug the battery to get it to behave. I was so excited to get this tablet and read all the information in these forums about it, so I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. The bloom is off the rose and I just want a tablet that does what I want it to do. I don't even care if it has jellybean or ICS or even Honeycomb at this point... I just want a tablet that works without having to fiddle around with the software.
And I don't install crazy amounts of apps. I think there are 7 or 8 that I use. Mainly Moon+ reader, Dolphin browser, Pinterest and Sudoku and Angry birds. I also like to sync my google stuff, calendar, contacts, email.
I'm am thinking I might put it back to stock and let it do all the OTA updates and see how it runs. But if I do that, I have to do the fix that makes the google market and stuff work. If I can do that and in the end have a working tablet that is decent and stable, I'll do it. Can anyone give me any feedback after having done this themselves? How was your tablet after? I remember how horrible it was out of the box. Is it better? MUCH MUCH Better? or just a little better.
Is there another rom that has been proven to be stable? I'm not worried if the camera or bluetooth doesn't work, I don't use those with the tablet. I don't think they are working right now, I'm not sure I haven't tried them since I installed the smoother bean rom. It can be any version of Android, I don't care.
I have given some thought to selling my gtab and getting another tablet, but I don't want to do that just yet. I know there has to be a solution, I just haven't found it yet.
Any feed back or suggestions would be most appreciated. The developers work hard on this tablet and have kept it going when Viewsonic themselves quit on it. I think that its really cool that there is such a devoted community of people who still love this tablet.

Nice you gave me some more settings to try. Don't know that I want to change the DPI or have any issues with volume. Did change CPU settings. Anything else you'd recommend?
After it's run for about 10 minutes, it seems to work OK, only occasional lag. I'm setting background processes limit to none on every boot up. Anyone have a way to make that change stick between reboots?

For anyone who is "still looking" for something stable, check out noble1976 modified Blackbean (on this site).
I am very satisfied with this "beta" version that this maybe will be the last one I'll be using (its that stable for me).
A big THANK YOU to Noble1976 for his hard work on getting this version to work on the gtablet and his PAC rom and all the other help he has given to us. :good:

Are you seeing any startup or sleep lag like I'm getting with SmoOther Bean? I switched from Go Launcher EX to the default one (Apex?) and it does seem a bit better.
Would like something a bit more responsive for daily use though. What's involved to flash Blackbean over SmoOther Bean? Repartition, etc?

BAKED Bean you will must NVFlash to the new 2013DRH setup. The boot.img in that ROM is the latest fosser2 3.1.10 kernel. The mounting is completely different other then the System. So updating the Tablet with the latest that is linked in the OP should be done to the T.

The only "lag" I'm seeing is after the opening screen animation the screen goes blank for 10sec or so. So, just wait till the regular default screen appears.
And be sure to do what Nobe1976 said. It went very easy for me changing over, for I already have used NVFlash 2013DRH version with
nobe1976 "PAC" ROM. Good Luck.

So, I took the leap of rooting my HOX+ (international) about 2 months ago, and the ROM of choice was CM.
I loved it! Love everything about it. At the time, the "stable" channel hadn't been opened, so I was using the version in nightly - it's been moved to stable now - 10.1.
Since I was attached to the stable repo, Goo Manager notified me when 10.2 moved into nightly. After a couple of days of having it stick in my status bar, nagging for an update, I just clicked and let it do its thing.
Unfortunately, this broke my phone . I got an error something along the lines of "the process com.android.phone has stopped". When I tapped "okay" the notification would re-appear after <1 second. I've since found out via Google this is something to do with my kernel (why the auto-update didn't update the kernel too is beyond me =s ) - but at the time, I just wanted a functioning phone with minimal fuss, and thought it'd be best moving myself to stable anyway. This is what I did.
That was Tuesday of this week. Between then and now, the "signal"/reception on the phone (I use Vodafone, so coverage isn't spectacular anyway) has been awful - calls randomly dropping, and it just being unreliable and generally a pain. This is despite it being the supposedly "stable" channel, and the version being the same as the one I installed from nightly (previously). Maturing seemed to make the ROM more buggy, not less!
In the interests of having a working phone, I decided to leave CM. Atm, I'm going to try out an AOKP build - though officially unofficial, I'm hoping that minimalistic => less things to break. We'll see how it goes.
I've run various Google searches and the HOX+ finally seems to be getting (after nearly a year) a good developer community - with Lloir at the forefront of it, and Maxwen's blade kernel. Could anyone recommend a flexible, good looking, regularly updated ROM? I'm not a Sense fan (not long before rooting, Sense 5 came out, and it was "the straw that broke the camel's back" so to speak), but otherwise...I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. GPL would be good, and I'm a fan of minimalism (having as little clutter in the way of unused apps as possible). An active and engaged developer/dev community is a must - I don't want to install software that will become obsolete within a week, and have no prospect of a new release. Other than that, I'm more or less happy to try everything/anything!

PS - I should probably mention, although I'm in no way a dev, I am quite comfortable with tech, and don't mind spending a bit of time researching things to get stuff working. I'm a dedicated GNU/Linux user, and after a fair bit of distro-hopping I've come full circle to landing on Xubuntu. My view of my phone is basically a more awkward, more delicate version of my PC - the concept of "bricking" a computer is a joke, and I think until this possibility is 100% eliminated on phones, the developer community is always going to be slightly held back. I think the models used for developing Linux OSes could/should be applied to the ROM development process, too - as brilliant as the community is atm, it does have the "exclusive hacker culture" feel to it still.
The kernel didn't update because the device is s-on, also the call dropping bug, is you're problem no one else mentioned it. Just do research on the small amount of ROMs we got.

How come you can be so sure of the cause? The 'symptom' must be relatively common, I suppose a bit like the technological equivalent of a headache and nausea.
The device is S-ON, you're right. I've read a little but I've not found anything specific to the UK about potential risks. You've got the same phone as me, and you're in the UK too, would you recommend going S-OFF? Does it cause problems with your carrier (I read somewhere that the manufacturer wasn't so bothered, but the carrier was - as it allowed the user to change certain things to do with the way the phone received carrier signal)?
Last bit on ROMs - I've read/seen quite a lot, but the information just isn't out there (unless you personally badger the devs, perhaps). The most official most ROMs get is a thread here. Compare that to (for instance) a Linux distro - you can more or less guarantee that if a distro is linked to on Distrowatch, it'll have it's own site, you can read up about source, included packages, what distinguishing features that OS has, what DE/package manager, etc. There's virtually no equivalent for phones - the best I've seen is xda's ROM listings under the device...if you're lucky one or two of the bigger ones (e.g. CM) will have it's own site. So, in lieu of that, I'm wanting to get a feel of what other users are doing, and what they'd recommend

you cannot S-OFF the X+ currently, so i'm not going into that. Also you stated you flashed from CM10.1 > 10.2, which i assume was a dirty flash (no full wipe etc)
it's like installing the Arch + xubuntu on the same hard drive, which is bound to cause issues. So a full wipe was needed, as you should know "nightlies" are well nightlies, UNSTABLE

First thing first, cheers for this man! It's good to be able to have a "conversation" with a dev - although Linux distros have got more infrastructure in place, there is a lack of 1:1 as a result (of having so many devs, etc).
It wasn't a dirty flash at all - every time I've written a new ROM I've wiped everything (or at least, ticked all the boxes in TWRP), then after reformatted - you can see the output of the 'make ext4fs' in front of your eyes. So unless it's that there's some partition which is write-protected (I assume the kernel is - since every time I've had to flash a new kernel - regardless of the wiping in TWRP, the phone just boot-loops without the kernel being flashed)...it's been clean.
I flashed 10.1 BEFORE it was in stable - so my phone was still pointing at the nightly repo (I guess?). GooManager pestered me into updating, and when I did, I ran into issues (presumably, the auto-update isn't intelligent enough to write a new kernel, and/or its in this write-protected partition which can't be accessed from the OS?)
It'd been a while since I'd put 10.1 on, and thought it'd be worth checking to see if it was in stable yet (it was). Did full wipe - as above - and then hit that annoying bug with call dropping. So I'd gone from being working on nightly to broken on stable. Time for a new ROM, methinks...looked around, and decide to post here.
As things stand I'm using AOKP (just because it was another popular ROM I knew, not really for any other reason). It's doing my head in though - either I'm being thick, or there's no option to edit settings in ANY app. I'm missing some of the gloss CM has too, things like it coming with a File Manager installed (why the hell would you not have one?!). From what you say, flashing 10.1 might be worth trying again...I'll go through from ground 0 and hopefully it won't break this time.
I get the thing with not wanting to advertise...so instead can I ask what you yourself use on your HOX+? Do you use it as a main phone, or is it just something you use for developing?

you are right on point 1, it's in the write protected partition, and 2nd point, i tend to use my own rom's....i'am in the mindset, if i don't use my own rom's why should other people?

Haha, I see the logic!
Okay: so we've narrowed it down to a kernel issue. With my AOKP flash, what I did (blade wasn't for the right Android version I think) was extracted the .img file from the ROM.zip and flashed that.
With CM 10,1 (i.e. stable channel) - in your opinion would it be better to do the same, or use the blade kernel?

ALL my rom's are extract kernel from zip, i'am not sure what max did with his AOKP.....but 100% all mine you pull from zip and flash that
you can try the CM10.2 btw M1 not long ago released....just an idea..

Re-installed 10.1 (stable) again. Same issue, even though I've only had it running for 24 hours, it's dropped the call and didn't seem able to get 3G data (it was stuck at "E" for some reason, which makes doing anything impossible) despite being in the middle of the city and not near anything obvious that should block it like a huge block of flats etc.
I installed 10.2, we'll see how it goes.
Ok, I have an odd request if anyone can help. 16gb nook tablet here, it's been collecting dust for a couple years, but still works fine. I last flashed it with CM 12 I think. (it's at android 5.1.1) I'm pretty certain the partitioning was changed though. My goal is to reflash an older version of android. I want to downgrade it down to ice cream sandwich or gingerbread. I'm suspecting bad things are going to happen if I simply try to flash CM7 or CM9 or something without changing the partitioning back. Any suggestions on how best to accomplish this? I'm a bit rusty on my ROM flashing skills after a couple years of experimenting with windows tablets instead of android.

How about taking it back to stock and then doing whatever you have in mind after that? This "last-ditch" un-brick procedure might do it: http://bishoptec.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/?
FWIW, I was running CM 12.1 at one time and as far as I know there was no repartitioning involved in that flash, unless you did it as an addition for some other purpose.

hmm thanks, looking into that link now. I'm certain I repartitioned it at some point, but it was a long time ago now. I'm not certain what method I used. I've played around with way too many other tablets and phones since then, so it's hard to mentally keep straight what I've done with which device.
EDIT: Well, I've got it to CM9 now, I still have to flash gapps but otherwise its there. not sure how stable CM9 is, but I'm not sure which gingerbread version is best for stock + root without the B&N apps or skin. Any suggestions?

Wow, I applaud your resourcefulness in scaring up a CM 9 ROM and GApps! You must have a specific reason for wanting an old OS. As far as issues I suppose you could search this board for "CM 9" and see what people had to say about it in the past.

Doing so. Though I do have a specific reason for the older OS. It's a silly reason too one old game. Nethack. If the person who did the best android port had updated it since gingerbread it wouldn't be an issue, and if I could turn compatibility mode OFF on an app after jellybean, it also wouldn't be an issue. The game is nostalgic for me. (used to play it back on my Amiga 1000 in the 80s) My choices, play it on a newer OS and have the view zoomed in so you can see only a part of the map for each level (Boo!), Try my hand at porting it myself, or else simply get an old tablet running an old OS version again. (I don't think attempting to put old versions of android on a recent device would work out well) This seemed like the easiest choice. Got it running, and functioning how I want now I didn't have to adjust the partitioning at all. Your link was helpful, since in it it they referenced that the reflashing wouldn't effect changed partitions, which clued me in that it wouldn't be a big deal for downgrading the NT. so thanks!

If your NT model is 16GB, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575489 for the original factory sizing of the EMMC partitions.
