HTC M8 & M9 USB-tethering malfunction. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, this is my first post here as I give up googling anymore.
I have these two phones as stated in the topic, and I have to use USB-tethering to get internet connection on my desktop. As I'm writing this, it works perfectly fine... However, that's the first time in a week.
I've noticed on networks and sharing center that it uses a new connection for each time I plug in the phone. Meaning, I'm currently on "Home-network 57" etc. I can see I have at least 4 versions of HTC Remote NDIS based Device. Currently I'm on
HTC Remote NDIS based Device#2 (Network 58). However, I can't see the other versions simultaneously.
Using a Samsung Galaxy S3-S5 this all works perfectly fine.
I've enabled USB-debugging on both my phones. I'm using W10, previously I had the exact same problem with the same HTC phones on W7. I formatted, unable to find a solution and now I'm experiencing the same issues on W10.
I think this is as simple as deleting all the networks created each time I plug in a phone, but how the F do I do that?!
Thanks for the help guys! : )

Good friend trying to use modem to get internet on her XP computer

Hey guys long time no see. im usually in the Android Kiaser section, but I got a different question for today. A good friend of mines recently got a old computer. It had a lot of viruses on it and I cleaned them out. Once I was done with that, I had her o/s up and it was running a lot faster than before.
Anyway, she wanted to use her Optimus T as a modem because she doesnt have internet connection or DSL in her house. She is a genius and all, so she picks up stuff very fast . especially in IT and computers .
Well she followed the tethering instructions for XP and downloaded it to her phone. She then hooked it up to her computer and when we searched for the file, it was there but it could not be launched.
Now I advised eher to come here and ask you guys for help, but she is very prideful and wants to figure it out on her own. Now if this were a simple hardwre issue no problem . but since this is a networking issue , and well you guys are far more experienced in these matters, I was wondering if theren were a special program she needed or something like that for her computer to properly launch the program needed for her phone to go online
Well I used to be in the same boat With the internet. Although It wasn't a smartphone. The solution i came up with after days of trying was the phone in question needed an initialization command pointing to the apn of the phone. This was accomplished with no special software just windows built in capability, on a standard sp 2 machine. I would try my optimus but i have win 7 x64. Anyway not sure whether it helps or not but the proper initialization command would be something like AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”epc.tmobile.com” the number to dial should be " *99# "
The post below me is also good. It is usb network instead of modem.

You basically have two options to go about doing this. Switch on Data on your phone ..
1. Connect the phone via the USB cable and select the LG PC suite application, under Tools there is a option of Internet connection using Phone.
OR
2. Connect the phone via the USB cable, do not run the LG suite, instead on the phone in Settings -> Wifi & networks Use the portability and tethering option. The first option is USB tethering, the second is Wifi. Just select the USB one. THis will create a local network between the phone and computer and allow you to access the internet ...
Cheers !

..Well third option is to use P500 as a bluetooth modem to access Internet.
You have to pair the devices and use bluetooth dialup profile. This post is sent that way from my Compaq nx8220 laptop
use pdanet
I'm trying to tether my fatheta optimus but it can't find the Ethernet control module (ecm) drivers. I Google searched for.the drivers with no luck is there any place were I can get that driver.

Cellular Network x Wifi Problem

Hi guys.
I own a HTC Ultimate (HTC Titan here in Brazil) and I'm suffering for something that bothered me before in the Windows Mobile 'age'.
As the major users of smartphones, I keep my cellular connection always on and at home, or other places, I turn on my WIFI.
What happened is that, for some reason, the applications after a while stop using the WIFI connection. I know that because I often use EDGE instead 3D.
If I turn off the Cellular network, everything keeps running smooth.
Is anyone having the same behavior? I didn't see this in my HD7, as far as I remember.
Regards,
Cris

yep, I'm in.
For some reason, apps ( and browser) use 3G over wireless! I hate it and switch data to off :|
Will contact HTC to check soon.
The same for me ! I need to turn off cellular data to use wifi connection too often. I don't like it.

The Facebook is the champion. If I turn on Wifi and then open it, it will use the Wifi. If I got back and return to the App.. no more Wifi, only Cellular network.
This is the same thing on Windows Mobile. Microsoft should learn something from the competitor where they just keep one network running at a time!
What bothers me is that I don't remember this occuring in my HD7. Will put my SIM on it and try to see what happens.

Keep us updated please on HTC's reply. My 3G consumption is soaring every day
Evidence
I got an evidence yesterday that the OS is using Cellular Data while WiFi is on.
I used all my bandwidth on my plan, so Vivo as it's customers to keep a low speed or pay by MB used. This is done through the browser.
So I found that I was using the Cellular data while wifi is on when I opened the browser and receive the page from vivo asking me to choose wherever I wanna do use.
I don't know why MS still thinking that we wanna to shutdown thinks on phone to be able to use it properly. Why not implement like the others platforms where the OS just keep 1 way to connect to internet?
Amazing how they don't know how to advertise the product but know how to take away some pleasure to use the platform.
Hope they fix this in Apollo or a new OTA update. It's about time to show the users that indeed the phone can be updated OTA.

I do remember having this problem on my Windows Mobile but i have NEVER faced it with Windows Phone 7 on my Omnia 7! This is something related to HTC not Microsoft.
Quick Heads up, this is my message to HTC.
NOTE: HTC TITAN is not available on the device list, i chose the RADAR as it the one that is close to it. THIS PROBLEM IS RELATED TO HTC TITAN WINDOWS PHONE 7.5.
Dear Support,
Me and a lot of others who bought the HTC Titan Windows Phone 7.5 are facing a strange problem with 3G and WiFi.
For some reason, even when im connected to WiFi with internet connectivity the phone uses the Data Services from the Mobile Operator!
The fix is simple, go to settings > Mobile Network > Disable Data.
but it is actually not a solution.
This bug doesnt happen all the time, sometime traffic goes into WiFi as it should and suddenly it stopps and starts going thorugh the Cellular network!
I would love to know the reasons behind this issue (Not only me who is having it) and how to fix it (if we can do our selves).
If it is not possible to fix by my self, when HTC is going to release a fix?
Kindly note that this is NOT a Windows Phone 7.5 problem as i DO own a Samsung Omnia 7 with OS 7.5 and i dont face this problem.
Your quick reply is highly appreceated

Take a look at this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/start/connecting-how-and-when.aspx
"Your phone will typically choose a Wi-Fi connection over a cellular data connection when they're both available."
I'm afraid of this "typically". In my opinion, the correct way is to choose Wifi OR Cellular Data. One network at a time.
This week I will try to run some 'tests' on my HD7. I really don't remember having to switch of the celullar data to use correctly the wifi.
Keep us updated.

HTC Update
It looks like HTC has found the problem and is delivering an update for Titan. Can anyone confirm this?
Unfortunatly I own a Ultimate (Titan here in Brazil) and probably will take longer to Vivo test and delivery things =(
There is an update for the Titan, but I don't know if this includes the fix you are talking about, or if there will be another update?

Use win x64 PC as galaxy s2 headset

hello everyone, first thread
after many many hours of searching and torture i think i found a solution to this problem. i might be a bit late, sorry then, but i did look up probably all the threads up there and none had the concrete answer.
just to let you know it can be done. Check the other post i made before i realized you can edit your posts. on many forums this is not enabled.
okay so the complete solution for me was this:
ftp : // ftp .packardbell.com/pub/itemnr/CS183A00/broadcom_bt_6209700.exe
h** p ://w**.getdriver.com/redirectdownload/2908/atheros-bluetooth-driver-6-27-0521-0302-65-4-mb-acer-aspire-5742g-driver-windows-7-x64/
you need both the atheros bluetooth suite and broadcomm drivers installed and it will work.
on the services page of galaxy s2 in the devices from control panel disable all but handset profile.
if your mic drops in calls just poke "headset" twice on the phone to reconnect. it should work.
and don't forget to uncheck "Use for media audio" on your bluetooth options for your connection on the mobile itself, just the phone audio should remain.
tested on bluetooooooooooooooth 2.0 and 2.1 + edr dongles
it's still buggy as hell and mic won't actually work most of the time. crap then i guess.
oh. and this is for win 7 x64
That up there was for bluetooth variant, if you're looking for usb variant you can get ics on your sgs2 and remember to have MTP active, windows seems to have updated the samsung drivers so maybe it'll work on GB as well. anyway it allows use of sgs2 as a dial up modem. didn't try it yet though

[Q] USB Tethering dies off in several minutes

So judging by the quick search, many people have this problem on many different phones, and no solution was found.
I know I've had this problem with my old SGS 1, and even Nexus One.
Same problem on my SGS II, tethering to many different desktops and laptops.
So it seems to be android-specific, or Windows specific problem, really.
Basically, when you tether with USB, first several minutes all is well and speed is good, but in about 5-10 minutes, traffic from the phone just stops.
Phone still shows tethering ON, PC still thinks it's connected, but nothing loads, it doesn't disconnect, it just drops to speed or 0 kbps.
The only way to restore it is to disable tether and reconnect.
Anybody has any idea why would this occur and how to prevent it?
Does it say no internet connection on the network indicator on the bottom right of the notification center? My guess is your carrier has an issue with tethering. I see your on AT&T. Do they have a plan that is specifically for tethering?

No internet connectivity loss is indicated in windows, it still thinks it has a good internet connection. I'm assuming that after a while, it will detect that although there's a connection, there's no actual traffic flowing through it, and will say that there's an issue... but for a long time, it's simply as if I'm connected, but actual speed is at 0kbps.
Browser tries to load pages and times out in 10-30 seconds.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) this definitely doesn't have anything to do with AT&T. I have unlimited grandfathered plan with AT&T and a custom rom, AT&T has no idea that I'm tethering. Internet on the phone is still working fine.
I kinda feels as if the usb tether drivers in windows (RDIS or whatever it's called) simply gives up after a while. Or maybe it's the android tether process that "forgets" what it's supposed to be doing.
you are running a stock ROM right?

Nope, latest CheckROM.
But as I've said, I had same problem with Captivate and other ROMs on SGS2 =(
i haven't found a custom rom where tethering fully works....thats why i went back to stock
Have the same problem on BOTH my Huawei ideos U8150 and my HTC sensation.
My wirelessly tethered devices still work flawlessly but my USB tethered desktop disconnects after a few minutes. Screen time out set to Max in case something in the phone went to sleep but no difference. Definitely not a network problem as my operator confirmed but an android (or windows problem) .
I even set USB Port power settings to always stay awake.
Hope we can find a solution to this.

i got the same problem under ICS. tried on stock ZSLPE and custom XXLPQ firmwares. both do not work!
my stock gingerbread was able to work flawlessly without disconnection problem on the same pc. wtf is happening?!
I have Samsung Galaxy S Plus.
I am facing exactly the same problem.
Have tried different ROM's around 5, 3 were custom ROM's.
Looks like Android OS issue.

I had this problem on both my Samsung Charge(Stock app 2.3.6), and my Motorola Razr(Stock app 4.0.4). I believe it is a driver issue inside windows. It seems less of a problem on the Motorola phone as I get a few hours of USB tether before it exhibits the same problem whereas the charge started after a couple of minutes. ie. Phone has data and can access web, computer thinks its connected to the web and okay, but any attempts to connect to the internet from the pc fails.
The wireless tether works fine and does not exhibit the same issues so I would suggest you use wifi tether. I don't know if wifi tether uses more or less power than usb tether (assuming your phone is connected to computer and charging). If I get some more free time in the next few weeks I might try and do an analysis.

I've had this problems with pretty much every Samsung phone I had.
I have HTC One X now, and it doesn't have this problem. So something with Samsung drivers, I think.
Cool fact - HTC even has a one-click reverse tethering. So cool.
I have the same problem, but can't find out, where (windows or android) is it.
What I have:
Motorola Atrix (rooted with SuperOneClick, stock ROM)
PC with Windows XP x64 without WIFI
The only RNDIS drivers I could find was HTC RNDIS (for XPx64)
Situation:
I'm living in hostel for one month, and there is only WIFI internet here, so I tried to get my phone WIFI to tether into USB
What have I done:
Connected to WIFI over phone.
Turned USB tethering ON.
By default WIFI is not tethered to USB, so I found that turning USB tethering ON creates usb1 network and WIFI is eth0. Then I configured NAT by iptables on my phone to accept and forward connection from PC (usb1) to WIFI (eth0). [usb0 on Atrix is for Motorola Portal, didn't try yet to connect to internet throught portal connection, not USB tethering]
The problem in short:
At the begining everything works fine. But when many connection threads are opened (didn't look for that many count) connection stops. As it was already mensioned, PC thinks it is connected, on phone USB tethering is still ON, even more - ifconfig still shows the connection. The only diffrenece is that "ping 192.168.42.129 -t" on PC (192.168.42.129 is usb1 IP on phone) starts showing "Request timed out" messages. On the other side - from my phone, I cannot ping my PC either. So connection is like broken, no traffic can be passed, but both sides sees they are ON.
After turning off USB tethering, PC sees connection is off immediately and the Local Area Connection #23 is gone. After turning on USB tethering everything comes back to the beginning.
Current workaround (for me):
I am using VPS service, so I open dynamic SSH tunnel over putty, and use it as my SOCKS5 proxy. The worst thing is that not all programs can use proxies, and when I use such program it tries to crash my connection.
Sorry for my english, it is foreign language for me, if anything is not understandable or you need more test from me, please ask, I will try to do my best.

Hi,
I had the same problem with my Android Phone - P999 running Cyanogenmod 7.2
I had to go into usb debugging screen to adjust the Display power Settings to - Always ON when Charging - Option.
There is probably some power setting in your device that allows you to do that as well.
Basically Power Saving (Screen Off) Powers OFF the Tether.
Ensuring the Screen is ON while Charging (it charges while plugged into a usb port) ensures the Tether stays ON ALL the TIME!
Hope this helps you.
Took me quite awhile of messing around to find the right option.
I do have a similar problem but it's not time-dependant.
Phone:
Nexus 4 mako
AOKP JB-MR1 Build 6
franco kernel 3.4.0 build #121
Situation:
I use FolderSync to backup my sdcard to my Windows 7 FTP server. The reason for doing this over USB Tether is that I get speeds at around 14MB/s instead of 1,2MB/s over WiFi.
I noticed that it doesn't really matter how long tether is connected and nothing really happens as long as FolderSync is scanning the folders on the ftp server at low bandwidth. However once a larger file is transferred the connection is almost sure to break and show the symptoms described by the other posters (interface still up, just no packets being received at either end).
So I assume that some driver (either on Android or Windows) chokes on certain packets and then just dies. Anyone got an Idea how to tell which device causes the problem to investigate further?
I also noticed that if I had ADB enabled before starting USB Tether that the tether connection on the android will be disabled once the failure occurs.
I have problem with my realme c2 when i connect it to pc via usb tethering, it connects it running ok. if i make screen on by playing youtube or any video on it run but as soon as screen sleep it disconnect after some time
I'm a bit late to this, but for anyone else still having this problem:
in Developer options of my phone(Redmi note 11) under Networking, there is an option called "Always keep mobile data on". Turning this on should fix the issue
@Denav
This doesn't work for me. I have a Moto G Power 2021 and that option is already checked.

Were you able to figure out the issue? I'm having trouble as well. Mine disconnects after a certain time period and the times seems to be random. I've played around with the dev options and other cables and still having same issue. It seems to happen with mac and windows laptops.

[Q] Need help with internet pass through feature

I have tried to connect my desire x to the internet from my pc with the internet pass through feature. I have installed HTC Sync (which is a terrible application!!!)
Whenever i connect my phone in the internet pass through mode, a new unidentified public network appears in the notification area which does not have access to the internet.
HTC Sync never detects my device whatsoever.
I have seen in Task Manager that the passthruserver service and the syncmanager service is running fine. Even in Device Manager, i see the network adapter of HTC running properly. Even after the phone gets connected, i cannot browse the net from my phone.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve the problem?
Hello
I had a similar issue after upgrading to the official 4.1.1 update on my one X. before updating I was able to have this feature working very
good. For your knowledge I have searched on many forums for solutions and tried many of them but no results although I have installed the latest version of HTC Sync manager but did solve the problem.
Please need help in this issue if you can find anything let me know.
Good Luck
